Before he sailed round the world alone,
Francis Chichester had already surprised his
friends several times. He had tried to fly round
the world but failed. That was in 1931
The years passed. He gave up flying and
began sailing.He enjoyed it greatly.Chich-
ester was already 58 years old when he won
the first solo transatlantic sailing race. His old
dream of going round the world came back,
but this time he would sail. His friends and
doctors did not think he could do it,as he had
lung cancer. But Chichester was determined to
carry out his plan.In August 1966,at the age
of nearly 65,an age when many men retire,he
began the greatest voyage of his life.
Chichester covered 14,100 miles before
stopping in Sydney,Australia.This was more
than twice the distance anyone had previously
sailed alone. He arrived in Australia on 12 De-
cember,just 107 days out from England.He
received a warm welcome from the Aus-
tralians and from his family who had flown
there to meet him.On shore,Chichester could
not walk without help.Everybody said the
same thing:he had done enough;he must not
go any further. But he did not listen.
After resting in Sydney for a few weeks,
Chichester set off once more in spite of his
friends'attempts to dissuade him.The second
half of his voyage was by far the more dan-
gerous part, during which he sailed round the
treacherous Cape Horn.After succeeding in
sailing round Cape Horn,Chichester sent the
following radio message to London:"I feel as
if I had wakened from a nightmare.Wild
horses could not drag me down to Cape Homn

and that sinister Southern Ocean again."
Just before 9 o'clock on Sunday evening
28 May 1967,he arrived back in England,
where a quarter of a million people were wait-
ing to welcome him.Queen Elizabeth II
knighted(授以爵位)him with the very
sword that Queen Elizabeth I had used almost
400 years earlier to knight Sir Francis Drake
after he had sailed round the world for the
first time. The whole voyage from England
and back had covered 28,500 miles. It had
taken him nine months,of which the sailing
time was 226 days.He had done what he
wanted to accomplish.
()21.What can we learn about Chich-
ester?
A.He failed the solo transatlantic
sailing race in 1959.

man.
C.The second half of his voyage
was not as dangerous as the
first half.
D.The radio message expressed
his concern about the sailing.

England?

Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens are to
start a war on gray-headed flying foxes.These
super bats have invaded one of australia's
most famous public spaces.Officials have said
the animals are destroying trees and have to
move on.
These unwanted guests at Sydney's Royal
Botanic Gardens look like tiny foxes with
wings.Officials have estimated there are about
11,000 of them living in the harbor-side park.
After inspecting damage to dozens of trees,
they now believe there are twice as many as
previously thought.Branches have been break-
ing under the weight of these furry invaders
and their droppings have been poisoning plants.
Help may well be at hand, however,in
the shape of the ordinary garbage bin.The
62
gardens'director Dr.Tim Entwistle hopes the
unpleasant sounds of crashing bin lids will agi-
tate the flying foxes and force them to move
on."The way to disturb them is to use noises,
so we've used the loud noises made by rub-
bish bins in the past. You can also use speak-
ers as long as you move the noise around, and
what we'll do is to have a series of noises,at
the beginning and end of the day. What we've
found in the past is that the flying foxes leave
the gardens and go somewhere else,"said
Tim.
The gray-headed flying fox is Australia's
largest bat.It flies around at night using its
eyes and a powerful sense of smell to search
for fruit and flowers.Officials at the Royal
Botanic Gardens in Sydney have said they're
optimistic the unwelcome colony can be up-
rooted. If and when the bats do move to other
parts of the city they will of course then be-
come someone else's problem.
()24.Why do people want to get rid of
the flying foxes?
A.Because they're threatening the
survival of trees and other plants.
B.Because they are polluting the
city.
C.Because many garbage bins have
been damaged by them.
D.Because the gardens are impor-
tant public places.
()25.What are people doing to get rid of
the flying foxes?
A.Shooting them.
B.Making loud noises.
C.Shaking the trees hard.
D.Cutting some trees down.
()26.Which of the following can replace
the underlined“agitate”in Para-
graph 3?
A.Excite.
B.Kill.
C.Discourage.D.Disturb
()27.What does the writer imply from
the last paragraph?
A.The bats will still stay in the
gardens.
B.The grey-headed flying fox of-
ten eats trees.
C.The damage caused by the bats
is serious.
D.Some other areas will have to
deal with the bats.

When we were young we were taught that
it's wrong to lie and we should always tell the
truth.Unfortunately,most children lie even if
they're told not to.Research carried out at the
Institute of Child Study at Toronto Univercity
has shown that this might not be such a bad
thing.Apparently(显然地),children who tell
lies when they're two years old have a good
chance of becoming successful adults

According to the research,at the age of
two,20 percent of children lie.At the age of

percent lie.By the age of 12 almost every
child tells lies.
Lying needs much brain work, and the
better the lie is,the more work the brain has
to do.By training the brain early, researchers
believe children will be able to think more
clearly when they are adults.
Recent research, carried out by the Sci-
ence Museum in London, has shown some in-
teresting facts about the way we lie as adults
According to the research, the average British
man tells three lies every day;that's over
1,000 lies a year.However,the average wo-
man apparently only lies twice a day.
Most people think women are better liars
(说谎者)than men although in fact they tell
fewer lies.Popular women's lies include "Noth-
ing's wrong,I'm fine”,“Idon't know where
it is,I haven't touched it",and "It wasn't that
expensive”.
Some people say you can lie as long as it's
a white lie.A white lie is a lie told to avoid
hurting someone's feelings. One of the most
common lies for both men and women is "It's
just what I've always wanted",said after
opening a present from their partner.
(
)28.What will happen to young chil-
dren who lie?
A.They will possibly do wrong
later.
B.They're likely to succeed in the
future.
C.They will keep lying when they

than younger ones.
B.As they grow,they often lie
about their age.
C.The older they are,the more
likely they lie.
D.It's quite natural for them to
tell lies.

women.

Back in April 1939 and armed with $5,000
provided by the Rockefeller Foundation,Colum-
bia University Teachers College professor
64
Frank Cyr took a tour of ten states to make a
research about school transportation problems.
What he found was that many students had no
dependable way to get to school and the ones
who did often travelled in unsafe buses in the
over 100,000 school areas.
Seeing a need to fix this problem,Cyr
organized a meeting-one that would change
the future of school buses forever.School of-
ficials and transportation experts met to set
much-needed standards for buses,including
those for color, height and width as well as
safety rules that hadn't been set before or that
were different in every state.
There were many different bus colors in
the US before this meeting;several areas even
planned to have red, white and blue buses as a
way of encouraging students to love their coun-
try.Cyr presented his new choices to educa-
tion officials,a reported“50 shades(色度)
changing from lemon yellow to deep oranger-
ed".The matter was settled quickly.Yellow,
or“National School Bus Glossy Yellow”,was
chosen because it was quite striking, making
the school bus easy to be seen.Besides,it
made the bold(黑体的),black writing on the
side of each bus clear.(The bold, black writ-
ing gives information about each school area,
telling students which school bus they could
take during early morning and late afternoon
hours.)Thirty-five states made the changes
quickly, and every state was on board by 1974.
Being recognized as the "father of the
yellow school bus",Frank Cyr has surely in-
fluenced your life if you ever rode a school
bus or saw that noticeable color pulling up to
your stop on a dusky morning.
()32.What did Frank Cyr find about the
school buses in the U.S.?

C.Disappointing.D.Reliable.
()33.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk
about?

B.Why the meeting was held.
C.What was settled in the meet-
ing.
D.What was discussed in the meet-
ing
()34.What does the underlined word
“striking”in Paragraph3mean?
A.Soft.
B.Bright.
C.Natural.
D.Beautiful.
()35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Why school buses in the US are
yellow.
B.How school buses developed in
the US.
C.How students in the US recog-
nized school buses.

students in the Us

Mary waited anxiously for her turn in the
empty dressing room.Never had she been so
nervous before. This competition was of vital
importance to her comeback."If I can win to-
day,”she said to herself,“I can dance on the
national stage next month."Three months a-
go,her left arm was seriously injured in a car
accident.After the medical treatment,she be-
gan to recover slowly. She practiced over and
over again in order to regain her dancing skills.
“Hi,Mary,”in rushed her friend Jessica.
"How is your arm?Is it going to influence
your performance?”
"I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win
the match,"said Mary with a determined look.
"Admirable!But I hear that a girl called
Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be
your real well-matched competitor.Come on!"
After Jessica left,Mary decided to prac-
tice her most difficult spin."If I don't try
harder,I won't grasp this chance,"she thought.
But her arm began to hurt, making her wor-
ried."Mary, what makes you think you have

a chance tonight?"she said to herself.After
the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.
A slim girl hurried in and put down an e-
quipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out
her dance dress quickly and put it on skillful-
ly.Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said,
“Hi,I'm Linda.I am the next one!”Mary
nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable."This
is just my competitor.Because of her,I may
lose tonight."Her mind was wandering when
Linda let out a scream,"Oh,God,I can't find
my music tape!"Linda searched her bag but
in vain.“It may be missing on the way.”With
these words,she then rushed out.

cheering Jen up.You're a good brother, and you come up
with great ideas."A happy feeling spread through me.I
said,"I guess we make a good team."The snow turkey
helped me remember that everything could still work out
even if it had to change.

W:Hello,ladies and gentlemen!Today,we have
invited Prof.Stone to talk about the role of elderly people
in our society.Welcome to our show,Prof.Stone.
M:To begin with,I'd like to tell a story from my own
life.Several years ago, when my grandparents were well
into their 80s,they were no longer able to care for
themselves very well.My grandfather was afraid of leaving
the only home they had known for the past 60 years. The
idea of having to sell their home and move into a
retirement home was an extremely painful experience for
them.Indeed, old age for them, and many old Americans
can mean not only the possible failure of one's health, but
the loss of identity and self-worth.
W:Yes,it's true. What do you have to say about the
problem of old age?
M:Many experts have given talks here that have
focused on the medical care, and the development of public
services for senior citizens.Today,I'd like to focus my
comments on the meaningful roles that elderly can play and
should play in our society.
Text 9

M:Sure.Do you remember that play I was in a few
years ago?I knew my lines, but I was terrified to have to
recite them in front of an audience. As soon as I saw the
crowd of people down there,my heart beat so fast that I
was unable to say a single word.
W:That's how I feel just thinking about the spelling
competition next week.
M:I didn't know you made it to the finals.
W:I'm worried I'll get nervous and freeze on stage.I
might forget how to spell everything, even my own name.I
don't know what to do.
M:Nancy,I know that you're not going to forget how
to spell your name.I'll help you get through this.I'll go to
the school hall with you to practice. Then I'll teach you an
exercise my baseball coach taught me.Believe me.It
works.
W:I feel much better now.Thanks,Daniel.
Text 10
W:My name is Emily.I had been a dancer for quite a
long time.I started studying ballet when I was 6 years old.
By the time I was 9,I was dancing five days a week.
When I was 18,I decided that I really preferred
contemporary dance and that I wanted to do it
professionally. So I applied successfully for the training
program at the School of Toronto Dance Theater, and
moved to Toronto to attend the program. That was the
period of time I enjoyed most in Toronto.I graduated on a
scholarship and danced professionally for ten years. But
after all those years.I found that dance was gradually
becoming something that felt like more of a burden than a
joy.I found myself increasingly unwilling to drag myself to
dance performances,so I quit.I do miss dance often.But it
makes me happy to think that I'll never have to go to
another training session again.
A
and doctors did not think he could do it,as he had lung
cancer. But Chichester was determined to carry out his
plan.”
ElizabethⅡknighted(授以爵位)him”可知,奇切斯特
covered 14,100 miles before stopping in Sydney,Australia.
This was more than twice the distance anyone had
previously sailed alone.”
Chichester covered 14,lO0
miles before stopping in Sydney,Australia. This was more
than twice the distance anyone had previously sailed
alone.”
inspecting damage to dozens of trees..”及“Branches
have been breaking under the weight of these furry
to disturb them is to use noises,so we've used the loud
noises made by rubbish bins in the past. You can also use
speakers as long as you move the noise around, and what
we'll do is to have a series of noises,at the beginning and
end of the day.”
根据下一句“The way to
disturb them is to use noises,so we've used the loud noises
107
made by rubbish bins in the past.”
and when the bats do move to other parts of the city they
will of course then become someone else's problem."
who tell lies when they're two years old have a good
chance of becoming successful adults(成年人).”(2岁
"According to the research,at the age of two,20 percent of
children lie.At the age of three,50 percent lie,and at four
almost 90 percent lie.By the age of 12 almost every child
to the research, the average British man tells three lies
every day;that's over 1,000 lies a year.However,the
average woman apparently only lies twice a day.”(调查
故选A。
lie is a lie told to avoid hurting someone'sfeelings..”
“said after opening a present from their partner”说明这句
根据第一段中“What he found
was that many students had no dependable way to get to
school and the ones who did often travelled in unsafe buses
in the over100,000 school areas..”(他发现,许多学生
根据第二段“Seeing a need to
fix this problem,Cyr organized a meeting-one that would
change the future of school buses forever.School officials
and transportation experts met to set much-needed
standards for buses, including those for color, height and
width as well as safety rules that hadn't been set before or
that were different in every state.”(看到有必要解决这
the school bus easy to be seen.Besides,it made the bold
(黑体的),black writing on the side of each bus clear..”
officials and transportation experts met to set much-needed
standards for buses, including those for color, height and
width as well as safety rules that hadn't been set before or
that were different in every state.”
"Being recognized as the father of the yellow school
bus',Frank Cyr has surely influenced your life if you ever
rode a school bus or saw that noticeable color pulling up to
your stop on a dusky morning.”
故选A。

次数。
和C中进行选择,通过“Take some time to reflect on
the positive by writing down three things that went
smoothly during your day or just items you feel grateful
for.”可以知道该句的语义重心在“Take some time to
reflect on the positive”,因此选A。
