After a late night of preparation, Jane fell asleep happily, but woke up late in the morning. She hurried to get on the school bus, but somehow forgot her schoolbag. When she got off the bus and was about to go to her classroom, she heard someone calling her name through the school radio and asking her to go to the headmaster’s office. The world population reached eight billion on November 15, 2022. A baby born in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean, has been named as “the earth’s eight billionth baby and living person”.
The world population now is about eight times as large as that in 1803. Population growth rapidly increased in the 20th century. As humans learned more about health diet and medicine, more people lived into adulthood and old age. Humans also got better at growing crops, so more people around the world had enough to eat and lived longer.
It was only 12 years ago, in 2011, that the world’s population hit seven billion. Births have been declining (下降) in America, Europe and Japan. Much of the population growth in the last 12 years has taken place in Asia, where the population has increased by 700 million. The population of India grew by about 180 million. It will soon take the place of China to have the largest population in the world.
Some worry that eight billion people is too many for the planet. But most experts say that the number is not the problem. The bigger problem is the overuse of resources by the richest people. The UN expects the world’s population will grow to about 8.5 billion in 2030, and 9.7 billion in 2050. And by the 2080s, the world population will grow by 2.4 billion. When that happens, there will be fewer resources.
“The world’s population reaching eight billion is a milestone” Antonio Guterres, the head of the UN, said. “The milestone is a time to celebrate diversity (多样性) while considering humans shared responsibility (责任) for the planet.”
56. How does the writer begin the text?
A. By showing a fact. B. By telling a story.
C. By listing some numbers. D. By making a survey.
57. According to paragraph 2, what was the world’s population in 1803?
A. About 8 billion. B. About 7 billion. C. About 2 billion. D. About I billion.
58. Which paragraph tells us that India will have the largest population in the world?
A. Paragraph 2. B. Paragraph 3. C. Paragraph 4. D. Paragraph 5.
59. Which of the following best shows Guterres’ opinion?
A. Eight billion people are too many for the planet B. The number of the population is a big problem.
C. The richest people used to many resources. D. Humans must share responsibility for the earth.
60. In which section of a newspaper can we see the text?
A. Natural Resources. B. Happy Hours. C. Social News. D. Public Morals.

Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are facing the problem of global (全球的) warming. A study by the United Nations says 14% of the world’s coral reefs were lost between 2008 and 2018. Luckily, a project called Crochet Coral Reef Project was born to help protect coral reefs.
The Crochet Coral Reef Project is a traveling art exhibition (展览) that shows the beauty of the ocean’s coral reefs. All of the coral reefs in the project are crocheted (钩针编织) by many artists. They try to use the way of crocheting to make people realize a great many beautiful coral reefs are disappearing.
The project is started by Australian-born twin sisters Margaret Wertheim and Christine Wertheim. Margaret and Christine grew up in Queensland. In 2005, newspapers were filled with articles about human-caused destruction (破坏) of the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system. When the sisters noticed that, they decided to take action. That year, they started the Crochet Coral Reef Project, and they put out a notice on the Internet. They wanted to invite more people to join them. At first, they thought maybe not so many people would join them. To their surprise, over 20, 000 people were interested in the project, hoping to lend their talents, in other words, their crochet abilities, to help this wonderful art project.
Now, the Crochet Coral Reef Project is getting even more attention than before. Margaret and Christine said, “Our project goes from strength to strength. We hope it will encourage more people to take action against global warming so that our crochet reefs aren’t the only coral reefs humans get to see.”

The world population reached eight billion on November 15, 2022. A baby born in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean, has been named as “the earth’s eight billionth baby and living person”.
The world population now is about eight times as large as that in 1803. Population growth rapidly increased in the 20th century. As humans learned more about health, diet and medicine, more people lived into adulthood and old age.
“The world’s population reaching eight billion is a milestone,” Antonio Guterres, the head of the UN, said.

根据第一段“Luckily, a project called Crochet Coral Reef Project was born to help protect coral reefs.” 故选A。
根据第三段“In 2005, newspapers were filled with articles about human-caused destruction of the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system. When the sisters noticed that, they decided to take action.” 故选A。
根据第三段“hoping to lend their talents, in other words, their crochet abilities”可知,“talents”是指他们的编织能力,所以talents的意思应为“才能”。
根据最后一段“Now, the Crochet Coral Reef Project is getting even more attention than before.”
根据最后一段“Margaret and Christine said, ‘Our project goes from strength to strength. We hope it will encourage more people to take action against global warming so that our crochet reefs aren’t the only coral reefs humans get to see.’”

Then I sort them so that they can be recycled. Outdoors, when I travel a short distance, I walk or ride a bike instead of taking a bus or a taxi. So my good habits have made me a green person.
