The student arrived early, sat front and center, and stood out in my classroom in more ways than one. I’d say that he was about 40 years older than his classmates in my undergraduate communications class. He hungrily jumped into class discussions, with his humor and wisdom of experience. And he was always respectful of the other students’ perspectives, as if each of them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile—and he left with one too.
“These students gave me the confidence that I didn’t need to feel bad about my age,” Valencia says.
One day I spotted Valencia on campus. He said he would have to stop taking classes that semester and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have earned enough money and have his student-loan papers in order. He asked seriously whether he could still sit in on my communications class.
Sure, I said. But he wouldn’t get any credit.
No problem, he said.
Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, jumping into our discussions on how to find and tell stories in Los Angeles—a 63-year-old man with as much energy and curiosity as any of the youngsters in class.
A lot of Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he couldn’t afford that semester’s tuition but was still doing the homework. “Here he is, willingly taking a class for the delight of it and benefit of learning,”says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year-old junior. Afterward, I overheard Valencia wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go.
There is something splendidly unreasonable about Valencia’s determination to get a four-year degree and then a master’s. At his current pace, he’ll be 90 when he finally hangs all that paper on the wall. But that doesn’t seem especially relevant. He’s found all the youthful energy and academic opportunity stimulating Valencia’s grade in my class this semester will not show up on his transcripts (成绩单). But I’m giving him an A—and in the most important ways, it counts.
4. What made Valencia different from his classmates?
A. He was respectful to the teacher.
B. He activated the class atmosphere.
C. He was anxious to learn despite his age.
D. He often put forward different opinions.
5. According to the author, why did Valencia continue to attend classes?
A. He treasured the chance of learning.
B. He wished to show his determination.
C. He needed the credits to further his study.
D. He desired to have an A on his transcripts.
6. Which of the following best describes Valencia?
A. Powerful and independent. B. Energetic and generous.
C. Positive and determined. D. Considerate and knowledgeable.
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. No pains, no gains. B. It is never too old to learn.
C. Strike the iron while it is hot. D. Where there is life, there is hope.
C 5. A 6. C 7. B

If you think shopping online is more eco-friendly than driving to a store, think again.
It may sound strange, but the more eco-friendly way to shop is going to a physical store rather than ‘by making purchases online from companies that don’t have physical stores, according to a new report in Environmental Science & Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical society.
In the study, researchers estimated that shopping at physical stores for frequently bought items such as toilet paper, shampoo and toothpaste, often results in less greenhouse gas emissions (排放) than ordering the products from a company that only sells through the Internet.
The main reason is because of how people shop online: Many buy items online frequently — but they only buy a few items per purchase. “When they shop in a store, they aggregate these items in a single large purchase,” noted Sadegh Shahmohammadi, one of six researchers who worked on the year-and-a-half long study.
“Frequent online purchases produce more packaging waste, and online items tend to come from different distribution (配送) centers. Both factors result in higher greenhouse gas emissions per item,” said. Shahmohammadi.
The team modeled their research on the movement of goods from the factory all the way through to the end consumer. They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer.
The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks & clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.
8. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning the new report?
A. To recommend a strange shopping habit. B. To introduce a respected scientific journal.
C. So analyze online shopping. D. To prove the advantage of offline shopping.
9. What does the underlined word “aggregate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Combine. B. Produce. C. Divide. D. Check.
10. What can we learn about “the last mile” delivery?
A. It is designer by the research team.
B. It is managed by the factories.
C. It causes high greenhouse gas emissions.
D. It influences the total greenhouse gas footprints.
11. According to the analysis, which is probably the most eco-friendly way to shop?
A. Buying at physical stores. B. Buying from bricks & clicks.
C. Buying from pure players. D. Buying a few items per time.
【答案】8 D 9. A 10. D 11. B

根据第二段“It may sound strange, but the more eco-friendly way to shop is going to a physical store rather than ‘by making purchases online from companies that don’t have physical stores, according to a new report in Environmental Science & Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical society.(这听起来可能很奇怪,但根据美国化学学会出版的同行评审科学期刊《环境科学与技术》上的一篇新报告,更环保的购物方式是去实体店,而不是从没有实体店的公司在线购买)”以及第三段“In the study, researchers estimated that shopping at physical stores for frequently bought items such as toilet paper, shampoo and toothpaste, often results in less greenhouse gas emissions (排放) than ordering the products from a company that only sells through the Internet.(在这项研究中,研究人员估计,与从只通过互联网销售的公司订购产品相比,在实体店购买卫生纸、洗发水和牙膏等经常购买的商品通常产生的温室气体排放更少)”可知,作者提到新报告的目的是为了证明线下购物(去实体店购物)的优势。
根据第四段“Many buy items online frequently — but they only buy a few items per purchase. “When they shop in a store, they aggregate these items in a single large purchase,” noted Sadegh Shahmohammadi, one of six researchers who worked on the year-and-a-half long study.(许多人经常在网上购物,但他们每次只买几件商品。“当他们在商店购物时,他们会把这些商品aggregate在一次大采购中,”参与这项为期一年半的研究的六名研究人员之一的Sadegh Shahmohammadi指出)”可知,与网上购物每次只买几件商品相比,在实体店购物时人们会把这些商品在一次大采购中“合并、组合”起来,所以“aggregate”意为“合并、组合”,与“Combine”意思相近。故选A。
根据第六段“The team modeled their research on the movement of goods from the factory all the way through to the end consumer. They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer.(该团队对商品从工厂一直运送到最终消费者的过程进行了建模研究。然后,他们特别关注了零售供应链中被称为“最后一英里”配送的部分:商店到顾客的距离,或者在网上购物的情况下,商品配送中心到顾客的距离)”以及最后一段“The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks & clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.(分析显示,在63%的购物事件中,实体店每件商品的温室气体总排放量高于“实体+网络”(人们在网上订购,实体店将商品配送给他们)的购买方式,但在81%的购物事件中低于纯网络卖家(严格的在线卖家)的购买方式)”可知,“最后一英里”配送会影响总的温室气体排放量,即影响总的温室气体足迹。
根据最后一段“The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks & clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.(分析显示,在63%的购物事件中,实体店每件商品的温室气体总排放量高于“实体+网络”(人们在网上订购,实体店将商品配送给他们)的购买方式,但在81%的购物事件中低于纯网络卖家(严格的在线卖家)的购买方式)”可推知,最环保的购物方式可能是从线上订购、实体店配送的商家那里购买。故选B。

Having trouble falling asleep? It’s common to blame the phone that’s just inches from your face and the constant updates you keep scrolling (滚动) through as you lie in bed. But the idea that the blue light from your smartphone is what’s keeping you awake isn’t quite right.
While blue-or short-wavelength light — such as daylight or that emitted (发出) by tech — does affect our body’s internal clock, things are less clear-cut than we often think.
“Sleep is a very complex process,” says Stuart Peirson, a professor of circadian neuroscience (昼夜节律神经科学) at Oxford University.
He explains that the part of our eyes that tells our brain when it’s time to be awake is triggered (触发) by cells that absorb (吸收) blue light. However, it’s also triggered by cells that absorb longer wavelengths of light (such as red). This means it’s not the color of the light that’s the problem, it’s the brightness and length of time we’re exposed (暴露) to it. The screens of our phones, in fact, are not very bright.
Sunlight is 1,000 times brighter than the average light emitted by a phone. Room lighting is, on average, 10 times brighter. This is why turning off the big light as you get ready for bed can help you feel sleepier.
“Technically, blue light from smartphones can affect sleep,” says Peirson. “But these effects are small unless you are using your phone for hours with a very bright screen and already have sleep problems.” In studies done at Harvard University, even using an e-reader with the brightness turned up for four hours only caused a small delay in falling asleep — just 10 minutes. In fact, your sleep is more likely to be affected by the kinds of content you’re looking at.
If you think light is impacting your sleep, Peirson says you don’t need to spend money on special“blue-light blocking” glasses. Instead, he suggests decreasing your screen time and turning down the brightness on your phone.
12. What is commonly blamed for causing trouble falling asleep?
A. The brightness of room lighting.
B. The constant updates on smartphones.
C. The content on electronic devices.
D. The colors of the light from electronic screens.
13. What does Stuart Peirson say about how light affects sleep?
A. Red light is the main reason affecting sleep.
B. Blue light strongly affects sleep no matter how bright it is.
C. Light’s brightness and length of exposure are more important than color in affecting sleep.
D. Only blue light affects the part of our eyes that influences sleep.
14. What does Stuart Peirson suggest doing if you believe light is affecting your sleep?
A. Buying special “blue-light blocking” glasses.
B. Turning off all electronic devices before bed.
C. Decreasing screen time and lowering its brightness.
D. Avoiding using electronic devices during the day.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The effects of blue light on sleep are made to seem bigger than they are.
B. Special glasses are necessary to block blue light.
C. Sunlight is the most important reason affecting sleep.
D. The color of the light emitted by electronic devices decides sleep quality.
B 13. C 14. C 15. A
根据第一段中的“It’s common to blame the phone that’s just inches from your face and the constant updates you keep scrolling (滚动) through as you lie in bed. (人们通常把入睡困难归咎于离脸只有几英寸远的手机以及躺在床上不断浏览持续更新的信息。)”可知,智能手机的信息不断更新导致了人们难以入睡。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“This means it’s not the color of the light that’s the problem, it’s the brightness and length of time we’re exposed (暴露) to it. The screens of our phones, in fact, are not very bright. (这意味着问题不在于光线的颜色,而在于亮度和我们暴露在光线下的时间。事实上,我们手机的屏幕并不是很亮。)”可推断,Peirson 认为在影响睡眠方面,光的亮度和暴露时间比光的颜色更重要。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“If you think light is impacting your sleep, Peirson says you don’t need to spend money on special ‘blue-light blocking’ glasses. Instead, he suggests decreasing your screen time and turning down the brightness on your phone.
A“The effects of blue light on sleep are made to seem bigger than they are.(蓝光对睡眠的影响似乎被夸大了)”最能概括文章的主旨。故选A。

When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese.” But this kind of reply misses the point.
More often than not, what we mean when we say someone “has an accent” is that their accent is different from the local one, or that their pronunciations are different from our own. But this understanding of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice (偏见). Funnily enough, in the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that decide our accents. Even if you don’t hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do!
Every person speaks a dialect (方言), too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance, “You got eat or not?” (meaning “Have you eaten?”) is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to stop for a while doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different?
We need to move beyond a narrow understanding of accents and dialects – for the good of everyone. Language differences like these provide insights (深刻见解) into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of who they are. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.
16. What does the author think of some friends’ reply in paragraph 1?
A. It’s impolite and wrong. B. It shows their language levels.
C. It reflects their self-confidence. D. It misses the real meaning of accents.
17 Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English?
A. To prove dialects are acceptable. B. To show various types of English.
C. To correct a grammatical mistake. D. To encourage more changes to languages.
18. What does the author mostly want us to do in the last paragraph?
A. To learn to speak with our local dialects.
B. To treasure the value of accents and dialects.
C. To have friends with different accents and dialects.
D. To have a better understanding of people’s experiences.
19. What can be a suitable title for this passage?
A. Everyone Has an Accent B. Standard English Is at Risk
C. Dialects Lead to Misunderstanding D. Accents Tell Everything about You
D 17. A 18. B 19. A
根据首段中的“When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese.” But this kind of reply misses the point. (当我向一些朋友提到我们都有口音时,他们中的大多数人自豪地回答说:“嗯,我的英语/汉语说得很好。”但这种回答没有抓住要点。)”可知,作者在向朋友提到每人都有口音时,他们的回答没有切中要点,由此可知,作者认为他/她的朋友忽略了口音的真正含义。故选D项。
【17题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Every person speaks a dialect (方言), too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words.(每个人也说一种方言。在语言研究领域,方言是一种语言,其特点是其结构,短语和单词的变体。)”可知,方言也是一种语言,只是其结构、短语和单词发生了一些改变,每个人都在说着方言,进而在下文中列举了新加坡英语口语,结合下文中的“The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different? (根据新加坡英语使用者坚实的语法体系,这个句子结构良好,沟通清晰。为什么仅仅因为它不同就应该是错误的?)”可知,作者认为不能因为它不同就认为它是错的,它仍然在被人们使用,综上信息可知,作者使用新加坡口语的例子是在为了证明方言是可以接受的。故选A项。
根据尾段中的“Language differences like these provide insights (深刻见解) into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds.(像这样的语言差异可以洞察人们的文化经历和背景。)”可知,通过语言的差异可以洞察人们的文化经历和背景,结合下文中的“Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.(大多数人都乐于谈论他们语言背后的文化。我们会更多地了解我们生活的世界,并在这一过程中结交朋友。)”可知,大多数人都乐于谈论它们语言背后的文化,这样会让我们更多的了解我们生活的世界,也就是说在口音和方言有其存在的价值和意义,由此可知,作者在最后一段中建议我们欣赏口音和方言的价值。故选B项。
【19题详解】
主旨大意题。根据首段“When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese.” But this kind of reply misses the point.(当我向一些朋友提到我们都有口音时,他们中的大多数人自豪地回答说:“嗯,我的英语/汉语说得很好。”但这种回答没有抓住要点。)”可知,作者利用自己的经历引出本文讲述的话题——人们对有口音的理解,结合尾段中的“We need to move beyond a narrow understanding of accents and dialects – for the good of everyone. Language differences like these provide insights (深刻见解) into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. 故选A项。

A To recommend a strange shopping habit.
D
“Technically blue light from smartphones can affect sleep,” says Peirson.

17. Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English?
