I was never a big fan of rain and I always hated wet roads. However, one day, while I was climbing Whitestone Mountain, I had a different feeling about rain.
It was unpleasant at first. The blue sky suddenly turned dark, and I just knew that my trip to Whitestone Mountain would be put off when the raindrops fell on my face. As I had expected, the weather became so awful that all the tourists stopped on the way up or down the mountain.
When I was thinking about how unlucky everyone was, a voice suddenly appeared behind me. “Isn’t it a special experience?” a girl said. I was surprised by this question. “How can such terrible weather be special?” I thought.
“It hasn’t rained here for several days,” she explained, “which means the heavy rain on the mountain is only enjoyed by a few people. Luckily, they are us. Try to feel it, and you will find that the air is so fresh.”
Her words were like the sun shining straight into my heart. I noticed how different and pretty everything was in the rain. I kept climbing. This time I didn’t pay attention to the rain itself but to the special scenery (风景) along the way. It was better than what I had thought it would be.
That experience changed my opinion about rain forever. And now rain is considered a gift in my life. That girl’s words are still in my mind. They remind me to keep positive in my life.

①Have you read Harry Potter? Fans of the Harry Potter books will know Quidditch, the magical sport where players fly around on broomsticks (扫帚柄). But do you know that the game is in the real world, too?
②It’s called quadball, and it first began back in 2005, when American college students decided to create their own, real-life version (版本) of Quidditch. More and more people started playing the game, with countries all over the world making their own teams.
③The rule of quadball is very similar to that of Quidditch. Although players don’t fly in the sky on broomsticks like in the books they must all play with a “broomstick”—usually a wooden pole (木杆)—between their legs at all times.
④And like Quidditch, there are four types of players in a quadball team. The Chasers try to score goals by throwing volleyballs through the opposite team’s hoops (篮筐), and the Keepers try to stop goals from being scored. The Beaters throw dodgeballs (躲避球) at other players. If a player is hit, he has to drop any ball he is carrying and run back to his own hoop. And the Seeker, which was the position that Harry Potter played in the books, has to find the Snitch. In the books, the Snitch was a small, gold ball that flew around the pitch (球场). But in quadball, the Snitch is a person—the Flag Runner, a fair player who runs around the pitch with a flag tied to his back. If a Seeker catches the Flag Runner’s flag, his team gets 30 points and the game ends.
⑤Quadball is an exciting sport to watch and even more exciting to play. In 2007, the world’s first Quadball World Cup was held.
23. How does the writer lead into the topic of “quadball”?
A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking questions. D. By raising problems.
24. Which paragraph shows the development of quadball?
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2. C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
25. What can be learned about quadball from Paragraph 4?
A. The Seeker must fly around in the sky on broomsticks.
B. The Beaters can only throw dodgeballs at the Keepers.
C. The Flag Runner should run around the pitch with a flag.
D. The Chasers need to throw basketballs through the hoops.
26. Who will most probably be interested in this passage?
A. Technology fans. B. History researchers. C. Book sellers. D. Sports lovers.

Recently, a special “homework” for college students during winter break caught public attention—helping the elderly reduce their smartphone dependency (依赖).
Smartphones have greatly improved the lives of many elderly, providing tools for communication, information and enjoyment. However, they have also led to some concerning habits. Some older adults spend a long time watching short videos, while others get lost in online shopping. These behaviors remind us of a growing challenge: finding a balance between the digital conveniences and healthy usage habits among the elderly.
Yuan Guangkuo from Jinan Times, thinks that smartphone addiction (上瘾) among older adults can cause several problems. “Many elderly people have no experience in using mobile phones. They often download (下载) lots of unnecessary apps. These apps usually pay them a little money for spending time watching videos or ads. Although this may seem harmless at first, too many app downloads can slow down their smartphones. More importantly, smartphone addiction can influence old people’s physical health, as more screen time reduces chances for exercise.”
So it’s necessary for younger family members to help their elderly relatives reduce their smartphone dependency. College students can teach them to use smartphones properly and safely. And a good way is to explore different interests and hobbies. But it is not enough. Bai Zhenzhi, from People’s Daily, believes that the smartphone market requires a lot more rules. “Phone producers, online platforms (平台) and app developers must all work together to help the elderly. The government should try to protect the rights and interests of the older adults in the online environment,” Bai says.
College students’ holidays are limited(有限的), so when they return to school, other family members at home should step in to spend more time with the elderly. Also, community workers and volunteers can play a role by organizing colourful activities and improving services, turning older adults’ attention from their smartphones.
27. What does the underlined word “concerning” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Exciting. B. Interesting. C. Worrying. D. Boring.
28. Which would be a problem caused by smartphone addiction among the elderly?
A. They would download many harmful apps.
B. They would spend less time taking exercise.
C. They would buy a lot of expensive things online.
D. They would lose a lot of money by watching videos.
29. How can college students help the elderly reduce smartphone dependency?
A. By helping them develop new hobbies.
B. By creating a safer online environment.
C. By making rules about smartphone usage.
D. By taking away their smartphones directly.
30. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To show how to make money on the Internet.
B. To explain why the elderly should use smartphones.
C. To introduce ways of downloading apps on smartphones.
D. To encourage us to help the old use smartphones wisely.

Music is like a bright light in my daily life—I really love listening to it. My favorite type is light piano music. It’s soft and peaceful, which helps me relax after a long day of study. When the gentle notes flow, all my tiredness seems to fade away.
As for listening to music while doing homework, I don’t think it’s a good idea. Even quiet music can distract my attention. I need full focus to work out math problems or write essays, so I’d rather keep the study space silent.

Although players don’t fly in the sky on broomsticks like in the books, they must all play with a “broomstick”—usually a wooden pole (木杆)—between their legs at all times.
In 2007 the world’s first Quadball World Cup was held.
23. How does the writer lead into the topic of “quadball”?
A By telling stories.
