The summer vacation is a time to enjoy a change from the school year. It’s a good chance to work on different activities that you don’t have much time to do during the rest of the year.
We asked about 2,000 people what they would do during the summer vacation. Most of the survey-takers agreed that the summer vacation was a break from homework and they could relax.
Amy is in high school. After school, she sometimes works in a cafe. She told us, “It’s a chance to relax after a hard school year—sleep more, and see my friends more.”
We also asked them if they would be too busy or kind of bored. About half(52%) of the survey-takers said they would be busy during the summer vacation but still have time to relax. And that is exactly how it should be.
How bored or busy people feel during the summer vacation depends on how old they are. Survey-takers in their early teens were more likely to be bored. Among them, 40% said they would be bored and only 10% thought they would be too busy.

In recent years, people show all kinds of things on the Internet—good food, nice clothes, wonderful vacations and so on. Now showing the number of steps (步) is becoming popular too. Why?
People are finding it important to be in good health. To keep healthy, many people go to work on foot. When they start walking, they open the step counter app (计步应用程序) on their phones to record how many steps they walk that day. After a day’s walk, some people show the number on WeChat or Weibo. This can make them learn from each other and keep exercising.
“This helps me to exercise more and keep a habit,” Mias said. “I can also talk about how to keep healthy with my friends on WeChat. We are in the same group to encourage each other to keep exercising.”

Teenagers believe anything is possible if they study hard. But they often forget to think about healthy diets, enough sleep time and exercise. In fact, these things are really important for them to keep fit.
It is important for teenagers to get enough energy. Teenage girls need about 2,200 calories a day while boys need a bit more—doctors suggest 2,800 for teenage boys. 50% of their calories should come from healthy food—rice, vegetables and fruit. People often say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Teenagers also need to drink a lot of water, 6 to 8 glasses a day. Drinking enough water will improve their skin.
Teenagers usually need eight to ten hours’ sleep at night, but many Chinese teenagers do not get enough sleep. A report shows that without a good night’s sleep, teenagers seem to be weaker than they should be. Too much homework is not the only reason why teenagers stay up late. Some watch TV or play computer games late into the night. Teenagers should develop good study habits. So some clever students never study late, but they are able to work well in class.
Exercise is something that can help them. Experts suggest that teenagers should spend at least 30 minutes exercising a day, five times a week. They will feel relaxed when they exercise. It can even help them sleep better at night.

“This helps me to exercise more and keep a habit” Mias said. “I can also talk about how to keep healthy with my friends on WeChat. We are in the same group to encourage each other to keep exercising.”
Mr. Wu likes to exercise. But in the past he was kind of lazy and didn’t want to exercise every day. “After I use the step counter app, everything is different. It’s great to exercise with my friends. Sometimes there are prizes (奖品) for those who walk more steps. I really like it,” he said.
Walking is a relaxing and useful way to exercise. Both the old and the young like it. Recording the steps helps people develop a good habit of walking and showing the number can make people more interested in walking. But don’t take the number too seriously.

For most of us, watching a movie is a pretty common thing to do. But for the blind people who can’t see, it can be very difficult. In Kunming, Yunnan Province, there is a very special theater, Xin Deng Theater (心灯影院). It’s blind-friendly.
More than 5,000 volunteers help at the Xin Deng Theater on weekends. Most of them are university students. Their job is to narrate (讲述) films to blind moviegoers. Before working, volunteers will learn how to tell of a film.
Every Saturday, volunteers will come to the bus stop to pick up the blind and take them to the Xin Deng Theater. Then all the blind will sit down to enjoy a movie together. When the movie begins, a volunteer will give lively narrations. He describes what is happening on the screen, including facial expressions (面部表情), the background and even the clothing. With the help of the narrator, the blind immerse (沉浸) themselves in the movie. They laugh when something funny happens and sigh (叹气) during sad situations.
Volunteers at the Xin Deng Theater help blind moviegoers better enjoy their theater trips. Yifan, one of the volunteers, has narrated more than 20 movies. “I could feel they were enjoying the film.
