As parents, many of us have had challenging conversations with our children. There’s one more to add to the list—climate change.
Climate change is no longer a future issue. It’s already affecting nearly every aspect of our lives and our children’s futures, making our heat waves more deadly, our storms more intense, and our wildfires burn.
When we talk to our kids, we have to be honest. Climate change is real and serious. But the most important thing we can give them is hope that there are solutions, and everyone has something to contribute no matter their age.
Many kids are already aware that the climate is changing. They first learn about climate change in school, online or from their friends. In a recent poll of American teenagers, 57 percent said that climate change made
them feel scared.
We’re climate scientists and we agree: Climate change is scary. It makes us feel anxious, and even angry, when we see people sticking their fingers in their ears and ignoring the warnings that are piling up faster and faster.
That’s why it’s so important to practice what psychologist Renee Lertzman refers to as attunement(协调). “Attunement is when we’re feeling in sync(同步), when we feel accepted for exactly where we are,” Lertzman explains. The first step is looking inward at what we are feeling; then at what our kids are experiencing; and finally, to all the other living things that are also being affected by climate change. How do we relate to them all?
By taking the time to understand how we feel about climate changes ourselves and then listening to our children discuss their fears and hopes around the issue, we can attune our perspectives to theirs. We can help them figure out how they can be part of the solution, too.
28. Why should parents talk to their children about climate change?
A. It’s a scaring topic. B. It’s a part of our life.
B. It’s a future problem. D. It’s a common greeting.
29. How should parents share climate change with the children?
A. Stressing its bad influences. B. Offering them simple solutions.
C. Telling them the truth hopefully. D. Telling them the trend of climate form.
30. What do parents and their children have in common?
A. They react to climate change similarly. B. They take interest in studying climate.
C. They prefer the changing climate. D. They ignore the climate change warnings.
31. What is the suggested way of practising attunement?
A. Talking about our experiences. B. Thinking in our children’s shoes.
C. Helping our children solve problems. D. Knowing our feelings and our children’s.
D
When you drive, you definitely prefer a series of green lights so that you don’t need to stop constantly. Now, thanks to artificial intelligence, German researchers have found a way to reduce time spent at intersections. These intelligent lights are said to improve traffic flow (车流) by 10 to 15 percent, which results in money saved; the EU estimates (估计) that traffic jams cause economic damage that adds up to 100 billion euros a year. Apart from reducing commuting (通勤) time, these traffic lights will reduce noise and CO2 emissions from
cars stopping at intersections.
Another exciting development in this research is the K14PED project, which studies pedestrians (行人) crossing intersections. Using AI, researchers can identify how many people are waiting at a pedestrian crossing and whether some of these people will need extra time to cross the street. Using a 3D points cloud, they can tell if someone is a senior or has disabilities by adding more waiting time until they pass.
Testing will be done until the summer of 2022 in the German towns of Lemgo and Bielefeld. And the researchers firmly believe that it will be adopted by many countries. This technology is exciting news for pedestrians and drivers alike. It encourages safety, protects the environment, and may even give you more time to enjoy your morning coffee before heading off to work!
32. Which of the following is NOT one of the advantages of the intelligent lights?
A. It is environmentally friendly. B. It is time-efficient.
C. It can reduce traffic accidents. D. It can save money.
33. What is the function of AI in the the K14PED project?
A. To provide real-time information about traffic.
B. To check road conditions and noise pollution.
C. To control traffic lights and the speed of vehicles.
D. To remind people of traffic rules at intersections.
34. What is the researchers’ attitude towards the future of the intelligent lights?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
35. In which part of a newspaper can you probably find this passage?
A. Tourism B. Advertisement C. Technology D. Economy
