As a college student in Boston,I formed
the habit of buying used books.I enjoy the
hunt, the good price and the unrecognized trea-
sures.I find old textbook,ex-bestsellers and
books on subjects I've never heard of and now
must learn all about.I don't search for rare
books,first editions or leather-bound editions
but books that are worth reading.
Rereading,for me,is a pleasure during re-
tirement. The theatre and the concert hall be-
come less appealing to me,along with crowds.
Staying alone and reading books have become
extremely important to me.Literature needs the
flesh of experience to have its full effect.Dif-
ferent books offer me insights(见解)and ways
of expressing that stuck in my mind as grains of
sand in an oyster(牡蛎)now shine like pearls.
My taste in books improves with age.
While packing for a move, which occurs at
intervals(间隔)of five to seven years,I clear
my shelves and pick my books.I abandon a

few, later regret my decisions, and look for them
again. Several years ago, I got rid of books re-
lated to my job—architecture. Some were de
sign guides, reference books, product catalogs,
and things that went out of date. Some were his
torical or centered on a period or an architect
These had given me many hours of pleasure
Will I ever open their covers again? Certainly. I
held on to the red bulk of Sir Banister Fletchers
A History of Architecture and books on Paris,
Rome, and Boston.
I gave away drafting equipment and instru-
ments. I threw out rolls and rolls of paper, and
old drawings of projects completed long ago,
some of which had even been damaged. This
time, I stay put in the cottage that suits my st a-
tus and Ive moved on in spirit. No doubt that I
will acquire more used books and throw away
more books as passions grow and fade, like
feathers changing with the seasons.
() 24. What does the author consider most

D.He has a deeper understanding
of life and books

on architecture?
A.To show some books are worth
reading repeatedly.
B.To recommend Sir Banister
Fletcher's books.
C.To suggest we avoid making
poor decisions.
D.To explain his love for architec-
ture.
()27.What can we learn about the author
from the last paragraph?

books.

We all compare ourselves with others-in
terms of looks,health,academic abilities,work
skills,wealth,etc..These comparisons can
have a bad effect on our self-confidence.So we
need the other way of comparison. An effect
commonly observed in social comparisons is
called the big-fish-little-pond effect:People
tend to feel better about themselves when they
are a big fish in a little pond than when they are
38
a little fish in a big pond.
To illustrate my point, consider a good dan-
cer admitted to a selective school, which is the
“big pond”in this context..One would expect
the dancer to experience high self-confidence af-
ter having been admitted to a school that ranks
high.Yet,she might experience lower self-con-
fidence in this school, because her comparison
group consists of those who are talented. If the
dancer were to attend a less selective school
filled with less talented students, this individual
would overshadow more students and thus expe-
rience a self-confidence boost.
But would the same effect hold if the com-
parisons were extreme?For instance,instead of
being a decent(不错的)student admitted to a
not-so-selective school, what if the student at-
tended the lowest-ranking school in the country?
Would he/she experience an even greater self-
confidence boost-a "huge-fish-tiny-pond effect"
or would his/her self-confidence drop because
the school is the worst?
Some researchers carried out a survey in a
college.187 students were told they ranked ei-
ther moderately(普通地)or extremely good/,
bad compared to others at their school, and that
their school ranked moderately or extremely bet-
ter/worse than other schools. The results sup-
ported a huge-fish-tiny-pond effect,which,com-
pared to the big-fish-little-pond effect, was lar-
ger by over 50%.And the huge-fish-tiny-pond
effect inflated(使膨胀)self-evaluations even
when people are performing poorly in the popu-
lation at large.
However, this does not mean one should
associate with“worse”people---those who are
less wealthy,talented,or successful-just to
have more self-confidence.Therefore,whether
you plan to move to a better neighbourhood,or
attend a selective school, you should anticipate
the effects of having a lower status and explore
ways to feel good about yourself.
()28.What's the author's way of avoiding
the negative effect of comparison?
A.Making friends with positive
people.
B.Clarifying the cause of our com-
parison.
C.Comparing ourselves with our
family and friends.
D.Changing the object that we
compare ourselves with.
)29.What does the underlined word
“overshadow'”in Paragraph2pro-
bably mean?
A.Admire.
B.Meet.
C.Be better than.
D.Catch up with.
()30.What do the examples mentioned in
the text tell us?
A.We can benefit from the huge-
fish-tiny-pond effect.
B.We shouldn't choose a competi-
tive environment.
C.We can become a“big fish'”if
UNIT5检测卷O
trying hard.
D.We shouldn't be too confident.
)31.What's the author's attitude toward
the big-fish-little-pond-effect?
A.Supportive.B.Objective.
C.Skeptical.D.Pessimistic.
D
We all want to keep our minds sharp as we
age.A multibillion-dollar industry of brain
training capitalizes on this common need by pro-
viding an abundance of apps focusing on mental
challenges for phones and tablets. There is evi-
dence suggesting that carefully designed exerci-
ses can improve basic logic skills and even lead
to better scores on standard IQ tests.
At the same time, brain training has be-
come a controversial(有争议的)attempt..The
main controversy centres around the extent to
which the practice of these skills results in actu-
al benefits that are significant for your daily
life.Does recalling an increasing number of
digits(数字)help you remember to take your
medication,do better on a school exam,remem-
ber the name of the person whom you met yes-
terday,or even make better life choices?
Some scientists question whether this is
even possible.Others argue that we should con-
sider the brain like our muscles, which can be
exercised.In a similar way,daily challenges,
even demanding ones such as reading a detailed
newspaper article or solving a math problem,
might not be sufficiently challenging to furnish
an adequate workout for the brain.Just as ath-

letes engage in strength and conditioning by re-
peatedly exercising certain muscle groups,targe-
ted repetition of memory exercises may be the
key to strengthening and conditioning our
memory processes.
However,others think differently.Memory
training apps require tracking a large number of
objects while one is distracted(干扰)bya
secondary task such as making mental calcula-
tions. That degree of difficulty and repetition,
however, may be rare in daily life, which is the
gap that memory apps should aim to fill.
If brain training works, the field holds
enormous promise to help a great number of
people such as those with cognitive impairments
(认知障碍).Critics,however,argue that while
the concept is appealing, most apps available to
consumers have not undergone scientific valida-
tion at all.We suggest that some of the confu-
sion may result from the fact that little considera-
tion has been given to who would benefit most
from the brain training apps.
()32.What does the underlined part "capi-
talizes on"in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Makes up for.
B.Does away with.
C.Takes advantage of.
D.Draws comparisons with.
()33.People advocating exercising brains
hold the view that
A.a constant repetition of brain
training matters a lot
B.brain training is more challeng-
40
ing than muscle building
C.physical exercise strengthens
the effects of brain training
D.many athletes have both strong
muscles and sharp brains
)34.What should developers of memory
training apps do according to some
people?
A.Combine training tasks with
daily life.
B.Increase the number of object-
tracking tasks.
C.Make memory training apps
more accessible
D.Design more complicated men-
tal calculations.
)35.What could be the best title for the
text?
A.Why do we need brain training?
B.What makes brain training ef-
fective?
C.Do brain training apps actually
work?
D.How can we improve basic cog-
nitive skills?

Cell phones have to be charged to be func-
tional, and most people use a wall outlet adapter
(插座适配器),and possibly a car adapter,to
keep their phones charged.However,people
who have deep environmental concerns find oth-
er methods.36.
A solar phone charger works in the same
way as a solar light. As sunlight falls onto the
solar cell,electrons(电子)become more ac-
tive.37.
The sunnier the day,the
more electricity.Generally,60 minutes of sun-
light will produce enough power for four days of
standby time or ten minutes of talk time on most
phones.
Often a solar phone charger can be used to
charge a variety of small electronic devices, not
just a phone.38.
Some solar
phone chargers can even be used together to
power a larger device,such as a laptop.
39.
One popular design has
three rectangular(矩形的)panels-一each three
inches long-joined together at one end.The
panels are fanned out and laid in the sunlight to
generate power.Another popular design looks
like a mirror when closed and opens with two
circular panels that gather power.
A solar phone charger,of course,has some
d山rawbacks.40.
Therefore,some
solar phone chargers are designed to generate
and store power from other sources. For exam-
ple,a solar phone charger can store electricity
drawn from a wall outlet or a car battery.
UNIT5检测卷O
A.Possibilities include a solar phone
charger.
B.This causes a flow of electricity,which
is then harvested.
C.Most solar phone charger designs are
small and lightweight.
D.It is later moved from the storage bat-
tery to the cell phone battery.
E.It could power an MP3 player,or a
Walkman with the proper adapter.
F.People also use a wind-powered phone
charger to power their electronic devices.
G.For instance,it can't generate electrici-
ty at night and generates little on cloudy days.

I got off the bus and ran all the way home.
It was officially Christmas vacation.Opening

my coat and bag-Christmas was just about here!
Just then,I heard an exciting voice.
“You're home!Come play with me!”Melissa,
my baby sister, sat on the living room floor,sur-
rounded by an army of Barbies. She looked at
me eagerly,waiting for my response.
I was going to be in high school in just two
years.I felt too old for Barbies and other
childish things.I hesitated, trying to think of an
excuse that wouldn't make her cry, when a sud-
den idea came to my mind."I'll play with
you,”I said,“if you let me play with the red
car.The red car was what Melissa loved most.
Melissa quickly grabbed the car."No!"
she screamed. She never let anyone else play
