As a little girl, one of my favourite family
traditions was held on the first day of May.
Along with my sister,my mother and I would
make simple flower baskets by making paper in-
to cones(圆锥形).Then,we filled the bottom
of the cone with small candies before putting
some flowers into it.
With our May Day baskets in hand,my
sister and I became anonymous gift-givers.Af-
ter hanging a basket on the front door of a
neighbour or friend,we rang the doorbell and

ran away. The goal was to remain secret givers.
Historically, the first day of May,often re-
ferred to as "May Day",has been recognised as
a celebration of spring,of life and growth.Pa-
rades(游行)and dances are ways that the day
has been-and continues to be-celebrated in
many parts of the world.Although formal May
Day celebrations may be less common now,it is
always worth celebrating. Here are some simple
and lovely ways to celebrate May Day in our
homes and with those we love.
Making a May Day basket is always a great
choice.Although the May Day basket we made
as children was simple, the making of the basket
was a joy in itself.Consider making or buying
some flowers for friends.Fill the basket with a
few sweets and write a note thanking your friend
or neighbour for their kindness, their presence,
and their love.
On May Day,we also take flowers to a local
hospital or nursing home.Flowers are always
welcome in places that are too often full of sad-
ness.Stopping to have a conversation with a pa-
tient and thanking a nurse would be an
additional gift-to the receiver and to us!
Besides,we always give friends small gifts
to celebrate May Day.A small book or maga-
zine with a note,an art print celebrating
spring-the choices are endless.When your
friends are faraway,an unexpected gift can re-
awaken friendship across the miles.
()24.The underlined part "anonymous
gift-givers"refers to people who
A.are serious about gift-giving
B.don't know the value of gifts
C.are careful about every small
detail
D.don't want their names to be
known
()25.What do we know about May Day
from the passage?
A.It is celebrated all over the
world.
B.The date of its celebration has
changed.
C.It traditionally celebrates the
arrival of spring.
D.There is an increase in formal
May Day celebration.
()26.In the author's eyes,May Day is a
great chance to
A.express thanks
B.visit faraway friends
C.read a book or magazine
D.stay with family members
()27.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The history of May Day
B.Great family traditions.
C.Celebrating May Day.
D.Flowers for festivals.

Louis Pasteur was born in Dole,France on
December 27,1822.His family was poor,and

nary student who enjoyed art and singing.How-

ever, when Pasteur was exposed to science as a
teenager,he knew he found his career.
In 1848,Pasteur went to college to become
a science teacher.He then became a chemistry
professor at the University of Strasbourg. He got
married in 1849 and had five children.
However, three died young from typhoid fever
(伤寒).It was the deaths of his children that
drove Pasteur to investigate infectious diseases
in order to find a cure.
During Pasteur's time,people believed that
bacteria(细菌)appeared due to“spontaneous
generation'”(自然发生).They thought that
the bacteria just appeared out of nowhere.Pas-
teur carried out experiments to see if this was
true.Through his experiments he proved that
bacteria were living things that came from other
living things. They didn't just spontaneously ap-
pear. This was a major discovery in the study of
biology and earned Pasteur the title of Father of
Microbiology.
As Pasteur learnt more about bacteria,he
began to think they may be the cause of diseases
in humans. When the French silk market was
threatened by a disease to silkworms(蚕),Pas-
teur decided to investigate. He discovered that
this disease was caused by bacteria.By killing
them from the silkworm farms,he was able to
cease the disease and save the French silk busi-
ness.
Today Louis Pasteur is known as one of the
most important scientists in history. His disco-
veries led to an understanding of bacteria and

lions of lives.

Pasteur
A.became afraid of infectious di-
seases

ver that caused their deaths
()29.What is implied about Louis Pas-
teur's discovery in Paragraph 3?
A.It supported what most people
thought at that time.
B.It revealed that bacteria often
appeared out of nowhere.
C.It attracted the attention of the
Father of Microbiology.
D.It was a very important discovery
in the history of biology.
)30.What does the underlined word
“cease'”in Paragraph4 probably
mean?
A.End.
B.Find.
C.Develop.
D.Spread.
()31.What is the text mainly about?
A.A disease that killed children
easily in history.
B.A great scientist in the field of
biology in history.
C.Some of the most important scien-

tists in history.
D.Some of the most important dis-
coveries in history.
The idea that humans might one day live
on another planet has become more and more
possible thanks to science, but it still seems very
far away. But what British physicist Stephen
Hawking said at Oxford University in the UK
made that"one day"feel a lot more real and
closer.
According to Hawking,we humans only
have about 1,000 years left on Earth under the
threats of climate change, nuclear weapons and
robots. Our best chance to survive will be to
move to another planet,"so a disaster on Earth
would not mean the end of the human race",he
said.
Fortunately,we have already found that
planet-Mars.In fact,the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA)has found
strong evidence last year that liquid water flows
on Mars. This made the idea of living there look
even more hopeful.
In fact, the speed of Mars exploration
seems to have been getting faster every day over
the past few years.
In 2013,for example,the Dutch company
Mars One started the first project to put humans
on Mars in the mid-2020s.They offered people
one-way tickets to go and build a new home on
the red planet.Even if it means they'll never
come back to Earth, over 200,000 people still
applied for the project, which is now in its last
stages of narrowing that number down to 24.
In September,Elon Musk,the founder of
US company SpaceX,also revealed(透漏)a
plan to get humans to Mars in six years. To
meet that goal, the company is working on larger
and stronger rockets that can carry more passen-
gers.Musk is also planning to develop a system
that can produce fuel on Mars using water and
carbon dioxide so that spaceships can fly back
to Earth.
But staying on Mars for a few days is one
thing, and living there for the rest of your life is
another.
For starters, humans cannot breathe the air
on Mars,so a way to keep making oxygen is
needed.Dust storms also happen often on
Mars,making farming there difficult.The radia-
tion from the sun is dangerous too, because Mars
doesn't have an atmosphere like Earth's to give
people protection.
But Hawking himself seems to be looking
on the bright side.He believes that we will
work things out just in time,as long as we"re-
member to look up at the stars and not down at
our feet'”,he said.
()32.According to Hawking,
A.Mars will be the perfect planet
for the human race
B.we should work harder to push
forward space exploration
C.mankind is pushing Earth to a
quick end
UNIT1检测卷O
D.there is not much time left for
humans to move to other plan-
ets
)33.Which of the following statements is
TRUE according to the article?
A.Mars is the only planet that has
water on it in our solar system,
except for Earth.
B.There is an increasing interest
in Mars exploration these days.
C.The projects by Mars One and
SpaceX aim to take lots of peo-
ple to Mars.
D.The impossibility of coming
back to Earth has slowed down
the speed of Mars exploration.
)34.The author wrote Paragraph 7 and 8
mainly to tell us that
A.no other planets can provide a
better living environment than
earth
B.living conditions on Mars are
very unpleasant for humans
C.we still have to solve many
problems before we can settle
on Mars
D.we should try to find another
planet that is more livable than
Mars
)35.According to the text, what's the fu-
ture of living on Mars?

Tips for Writing a Great Speech
How to write a strong speech? There are a
lot of different ways to answer that question.
36.
ORead your speech out loud.
Unlike almost all other forms of writing,
speech-writing is designed for listeners.So,
when reviewing your text, read it to yourself and
pay attention to how the words sound and feel.
37.
If your phrases make you stumble
(结巴),they are guaranteed to make your boss
stumble as well.Just remember that good writ-
ing is not necessarily good speech-writing.
OSimple phrases are your friends.
Keep your sentences short and sweet.
Compound phrases with multiple clauses may
look great on paper, but are likely to confuse
your audience and decrease the effectiveness of
your speech.Limit yourself to one or two ideas
per sentence.38.
●Do your research.
Before beginning a speech, make sure to
familiarize yourself with the subject.
39.
The creative aspects of speech-
writing are only effective when backed by a
strong foundation of knowledge by the speaker.
The audience must trust your words in order for
their meaning to sink in.If you're well-pre-
6
pared,it will show.
●40.
Your listeners should be a strong determi-
ning factor of the content, tone and style of your
speech.Before drafting remarks,think about
who you're speaking to,the place you're speak-
ing at and the timing of your speech. There's a
time and a place for every type of remarks. It's
your job to figure out when and where you are.
A.Know your listeners.
B.Show respect to your listeners.
C.The simple sentences make your
speech clear and powerful.
D.Thus, you can write about it with con-
fidence and authority.
E.Do they slip off the tongue or are they
clumsy and awkward?
F.Different writers are most likely to
adopt diverse approaches to speech-writing.
G.Here are rules that all writers should
follow in order to write a winning speech.

A light knock on the door brought me from
my kitchen.Because we had just moved into the
neighbourhood,I couldn't imagine who it would
be.Opening the door,an old man stood there,
who was dressed in dirty clothing and wearing
dirty rubber boots. His hand hung a plastic bag.
“Can I help you?”I asked.
"Would you like to buy some fresh garden
vegetables?"His blue eyes were hopeful.
“Are they from your garden?”I looked in-
side his plastic bag and saw some carrots with
soil.
“Yes,”his voice was soft.“And I can get
some apples from a tree in my yard.Would you
like some of those,too?"
My heart softened, and I wondered if he
was badly in need of money. With a sigh,I
said,"Please step inside and I'll get my
money.”
The next day,he knocked at our door
again.This time,my little four-year-old daugh-
ter got there first."Oh,hello.Would you like
to come in for some tea?"Without a second
thought, the old man stepped inside and held
out a broken basket with several bruised(擦伤

ving a worn cap."You might like to make a
pie.”
The three of us sat at the kitchen table and
drank our tea.It was obvious that my daughter
liked hosting a visitor in her never-ending ques-
tions."What is your name?Where do you live?
Why are your clothes so dirty?"
The homeless-looking man laughed as he
answered each question. His name was Mr.
