Steve Jobs may not be the most obvious style icon(偶像)for Generation Z(亿世代),but his habit of
wearing the same set of clothes every day has left an influence on young professionals like me.Unlike
fashion-conscious millennials(千a禧一代),many of my generation have abandoned creative office dressing,
instead it had become common to find one fixed dress code and stick to it.That could be smart or casual, but
whatever it is,we're not varying it.
My first job experience perfectly illustrates this shift. After weeks of interview preparation,I weighed up
my first-day outfit. But when I arrived,I couldn't have been more confused.A senior workmate wore jeans and
red glasses, while another stuck strictly to suits.A week later,I realized that there simply were no rules. So I
created my own uniform-two pairs of casual trousers from Uniqlo and basic tops.
I'm not alone:a media industry friend repeats modest tops and trousers for interviews;my boyfriend has
four gray formal shirts;a roommate's plain sweaters mirror classic consultant style.A designer friend even
sews her name into identical cotton shirts to avoid decision tiredness, joking that her "work uniform"has
become her professional signature.
Why are we doing this? The reality warns us:being taken seriously is a worry. In an unstable job market
with a high cost of living, standing out through clothes feels risky.A recent survey reveals that 75%of
companies are dissatisfied with recent graduates labeled as lazy people.Uniform dressing helps us avoid
attention and focus on competence.Dressing plainly means one less thing to worry about.
Moreover, sustainable fashion isn't cheap, and tracking trends is both expensive and time-consuming.A
Gen Z workmate once wore zebra-print trousers and suffered such judgment that she said,"I've now lost my
personality."For many of us,the thrill of striking fashion is no longer worth the price.Safe black trousers it is.
24.Why did the author create her own "uniform"for work?
A.She wanted to copy Steve Jobs'style.
B.She couldn't afford fashionable clothes
C.She was advised by her workmates to-dress simply.
D.She found everyone was free to dress as they preased.

A.Creative dressing is preferred in most industries.
B.Gen Z professionals have lost interest in fashion
C.Many Gen Z professionals adopt a uniform style of dress.
D.Sustainable fashion is becoming popular among Gen Z.
26.Why does Gen Z choose to dress plainly?
A.They are pressured by senior workmates.
B.Companies prefer employees to dress simply.
C.They are unwilling to be the focus in the office.
D.Recent graduates are asked to follow strict rules.
27.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To analyze Gen Z's dressing code.
B.To criticize Gen Z's lack of fashion creativity.
C.To compare fast fashion and quality uniforms.
D.To explain why Gen Z values financial stability.
Q
Beneath the Pacific lies the Clarion-Clipperton Zone(CCZ),where tens of billions of polymetallic nodules
(多金属结核)are packed with cobalt(钴),Seabed-mining companies promote them as“a battery in a rock”
and"the easiest way to solve climate change."They claim that those nodules can provide metals for 4.8 billion
electric vehicles.
Yet this promise threatens a biological treasure.Marine (biologists reveal the CCZ shelters over
5,000 unique species in the darkness. The extensive mining of cobalt may lead to the loss of biodiversity.A
company claimed to have found a solution to minimize the damage to the ecology and has already trialed a
25-ton collector robot designed to harvest these nodules. However,a 2023 study shows it can cause permanent
destruction in the area.
Commercial mining is not yet permitted in international waters. The International Seabed Authority (ISA)
is still determining how,and under what conditions, mining should be allowed. After 28 years of debate, its 168
member states still lack formal agreement. While companies advocate using nodule-collecting robots,437
scientists from 44 countries demand an immediate stop.ISA studies confirm that just 10%mining of the CCZ
may wipe out 50%of its species.
Nor is it certain that cobalt mining will even be all that important in car-battery technology. Many battery
companies are trying to recycle cobalt from spent batteries. In March, several major European carmakers
jointly stated that they would not buy any metals produced from deep-sea mining before the environmental
risks are "completely understood".Meanwhile, several Chinese electric vehicle producers have already made
the switch, recycling up to 95%of metals from used batteries."Why rush to mine the ocean for metals
becoming outdated?"said battery expert Gavin Harper.
On June 8,21 marine scientists from 8 universities finished a six-week research in the CCZ and packed up
seafloor samples to take back to their labs for further analysis."An assessment of the mining's impact will take
years of research, says Andrew from Edinburgh."I'm trying to get the best environmental data. And then it's
up to society to make the decision to go ahead."
28.Why are the nodules called"a battery in a rock"?
A.They contain valuable metals.
B.They have recharging qualities.
C.They own battery-like structures.
D.They generate renewable power.
29.What can be inferred about the ISA?
A.It puts economic interests first.
B.It is guarded about seabed mining.
C.It disapproves of commercial operations.D.It requires more technical support.
30.What does the author want to illustrate in Paragraph 4?
A.Deep-sea mining meets demands.
B.Carmakers reuse battery materials.
C.Battery recycling needs promoting.
D.Seabed mining for cobalt can wait

Why do some people keep making harmful choices, even when the outcomes are obvious?A new study by
UNSW Sydney's Dr Bressel found that for a small group, the issue isn't lack of motivation or ability, but rather
a subtle but persistent failure to connect their actions with its consequences.
The paper, published recently in Nature Communications Psychology, details an online learning game
where participants were asked to click between two planets for rewards or to avoid punishment.Researchers
observed three behavioral types:Sensitives(avoid bad choices),Unawares(adjust strategies after being told
their errors)and Compulsives (still make wrong choices even after learning their mistakes)."Some people
don't learn from experience.Even when motivated to avoid harm, they fail to see their behavior causes
problems,"said Dr Bressel.
This study followed past research, which only focused on Australian psychology students, but had key
differences:267 participants from 24 countries (including over 50-year-olds),six-month follow-ups,and
post-game surveys on their choices. The same behavioral profiles emerged across caltures and ages.In
Australian studies,35%were Sensitives,41%Unawares,23%Compulsives;in the new study,26%Sensitives,
47%Unawares,27%Compulsives.Dr Bressel linked more Compulsives to older participants,as cognitive(
)flexibility declines with age.Interestingly, when participants were invited back to play the same game six
months later,most showed the same behavioral tendency."That was striking,"said Bressel."These aren't just
random mistakes. They're almost like personality types. This is not to say they're fixed, just that they may
require intervention to break."Researchers confirmed Compulsives'choices weren't habits:participants could
explain their wrong choices. This points to a deeper issue-a failure to integrate new knowledge to minimize
bad outcomes.
Dr Bressel noted real life is more complex than the game, but the pattern of ignoring experience and
information matches compulsory behaviors. The research has important implications for public health
messaging. Many campaigns rely on providing information-about smoking, drinking or financial risks-with
the assumption that people will act on it.But this study suggests that for some, information alone isn't enough.
"Standard information campaigns work for most-but not for everyone,"Dr Bressel said."For compulsory
individuals,we may need different intervention."
32.What were participants expected to do in the online leaming game?
A.Make choices.
B.Win awards.
C.Observe behaviour.
D.Identify errors.
33.What is a striking finding of the new study?
A.Cognition declines with age.
B.Unawares account for the largest.
C.Behavioral patterns are consistent.
D.Mistakes influence personality types.
64.What does the author suggest for public health campaigns?
A.Increasing lecture frequency.
B.Reyiewing behavior errors.
C.Developing tailored strategies.
D.Enhancing information accuracy
35.Which is the best title for the text?

Soilless farming,as the name implies,is a type of farming where plants are cultured and grown without
the use of the soil.It is also a systematic technique where plants are grown without the use of soil as a rooting
environment.36
Due to lacking originality, conventional farming has many processes and requires the manure (of
chemical mixtures to make the soil rich in nutrients.37 Nutrients are provided to the plants, majorly
in liquid form, and their needs are met throughout life, from seeds to rive fruit.
In many soilless farming systems, water is recycled and reused until the plants are ready to harvest.
38 Additionally,it reduces the physical labor and energy required from workers, helping them achieve
higher profus while keeping costs very low.
By following standardized steps throughout the entire production process, soilless farming can supply
crops to the market every day, meeting consumers'needs. When countries that rely on food imports see how
productive this farming method is,they will begin growing crops locally all year round.B9
40 The rate at which pathogens (attack the farm will be zero as a result of how the
planting environment is concerned, and if the pathogen ever attacks, the infected plant will be easily separated
to avoid infecting tne farm as a whole.Developed countries in the world are expected to adopt this mode of
farming because doing so reduces the level of food importation and increases the availability of foed m the
country.
A.However,soil farming requires more workload.
B.The quality of the harvested food may be controlled.
C After all, food imports might pollute the environment.
D.Hence, soilless farming is an alternative to dry regions.
With this method, crops can be planted almost everywhere.
F.Soilless farming has less workload and can enhance growth.
G.In this way, even seasonal produce can be harvested anytime.

In a poverty-stricken community of Yazoo,Ben had his life journey shaped by an old barber called Jack.
As a poor boy,Ben was among those who benefited from Jack's special offer.Every time he got a free haircut,
the barber()would encourage him to read storybooks, opening up a world of knowledge and
imagination he had never known before.
As Ben grew up,Jack grew old, unable to do his usual job.Ben decided to take over Jack's shop.Guided
by Jack,Ben mastered the skill of cutting hair and became a popular barber in the neighborhood. He continued
the tradition of providing free haircuts for poor children.
Soon Ben found that, accustomed to hanging about to kill time and having little access to books, many
kids around had weak literacy. When he asked about what they learned,he would receive short and broken
responses.Among them was a shy boy named Harry, his father dead and mother often ill in bed.
Determined to encourage the children to read for their future,Ben turned to Jack for advice. His idea was
supported by Jack, who helped him set up a reading section in the corner of the shop.Ben filled it with all kinds
of books he bought.
When Harry came for a haircut,Ben said smilingly,"Harry, there are some great storybooks waiting for
you.Why not pick one to read?"Harry looked up,his eyes wide with surprise.Ben led him to the book shelves
and helped him choose a book about a young hero who overcame great odds.
Harry became a regular in the reading room.He would sit in the corner, completely absorbed in a book,
his lips moving slightly as he read silently.Ben noticed Harry was initially hesitant to read aloud due to his
poor pronunciation.Whenever Harry mispronounced a word,Ben would assure him,"It's okay,Harry.Try that
again. You're doing great."With Ben's continuous help,Harry's reading skills gradually improved.
