A few years ago, I spared a couple of hours from busy academic learning to work in a video store on a daily basis. There was something in the elderly woman’s behavior that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of step, the woman moved with deliberation, and there was no hesitation in her gestures. And she had a job to do.
The elderly woman had walked into the store along with a younger woman who I guessed was her daughter. The daughter was displaying a serious case of impatience checking her watch every few seconds. The older woman detached from the younger one and began to tick through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title scrawled on a crumpled (皱巴巴的) piece of paper. The title was a bit difficult to understand. Clearly a person looking for it knew a little about movies, about quality.
Rather than rushing of to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who’d departed this life last Christmas. As we walked along the back of the store, I narrated its floor plan. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation. We found the movie, and I complimented (称赞) her on her choice. Then, reluctantly, I had to return the elderly woman to her keeper, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.
I walked over to the younger woman. “ls that your mom?” l asked. She rolled her eyes and said, “Yeah.” There was annoyance in her reply, half sigh and half complaint. Still watching the mother, l said, “Mind some advice?” “Sure,” said the daughter. I smiled to show her I wasn't criticizing, l answered her curious expression by saying, “When she’s gone, it’s the little moments that will come back to you. Moments like this. l used to let it slip. I know.”
24. What does the underlined sentence “she had a job to do” in paragraph I mean?
A. She was thinking of what to buy
B. She had a regular job in the store
C. She wanted to buy a DVD
D. She wanted to ask for help
25. Which word can best describe the daughter’s behaviors towards her mom?
A. Uncaring B. Impolite
C. Tolerant D. Considerate
26. What can we learn about the author?
A. She was a full time employee in the store.
B. She regretted not accompanying her mom.
C. She was ill-informed of quality movies.
D. She criticized the younger woman seriously.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Lend a helping hand to elderly people
B. Mother is not what we can substitute
C. The past cannot be called back again
D. Always treasure the ones you love

Identifying the chemical makeup of pigment (颜彩) used in ancient documents, paintings, and watercolors is critical to restoring and conserving the precious artworks. However, despite numerous efforts, scientists had been unable to determine the source of folium, a popular blue dye used to color manuscripts (手稿) in Europe during the middle ages -- from the 5th to the 15th century. Now, researchers from Porugal have finally uncovered the mysterious ingredient responsible for the gorgeous bluish-purple color that helped bring ancient illustration to life.
“This is the only medieval (中世纪的) color based on organic dyes that we didn’t have a structure for,” says Maria Joao Melo, an associate professor at the Department of Conservation and Restoration at NOVA University of Lisbon. “We need to know what’s in medieval manuscript illustrations because we want to preserve these beautiful colors for future generations.”
The research team began by poring over instructions penned by European dye makers from the 12th, 14th and 15th centuries. They found what they were seeking in a 15th-century text entitled The Book on How to Make All the Color Paints for Illuminating Books. However, translating the instructions was no easy task. It was written in the now extinct Judaeo-Portuguese language, and though the source of the dye was traced back to a plant, no name was mentioned.
However, by piecing together suggestions from the text, the scientists were able to determine that the dye was made from the bluish-green berries of the chrozophora tinctoria plant. After an extensive search, the team found a few varieties of the plant growing along the roadside near the town of Monsaraz in south Portugal.
The detailed instructions gave the researchers critical clues to successfully recreate the dye. “You need to squeeze the fruits, being careful not to break the seeds, and then to put them on linen (亚麻布).” The scientist says the detail was important since broken seeds polluted the pigment, producing an inferior quality ink. The dyed linen, which was left to dry, was an efficient way to store and transport the pigment during ancient times. When needed, the artist would simply cut off a piece of the cloth and dip it with water to squeeze out the blue color.
Once the key ingredient had been identified the researchers began the next step and the primary primary purpose of their study -- determining the dye’s chemical structure. To their surprise, they found that folium was not like any other known permanent blue dyes -- it was an entirely new class of color, one they named chrozophoridin. “Chrozophoridin was often used in ancient times to make a beautiful blue dye for painting.” the team wrote in the study. Now, the researchers can farther study the stability of the dye, as well as how it responds to factors that may wear and break it down overtime. “This is essential if we desire to make these colors last forever -- or at least as long as possible,” Melo said.
28. What is “folium” according to the text?
A. It’s an ancient painting. B. It’s an organic blue pigment.
C. It’s a colorful manuscript. D. it’s a mysterious ingredient.
29. What does the underlined phrase “poring over” in Para. 3 probably means?
A. following strictly. B. testing repeatedly.
C. discussing publicly. D. reading carefully.
30. What can we learn from the text?
A. Folium can be stored and used easily.
B. Folium was squeezed from broken seeds.
C. The stability of folium has been confirmed by researchers.
D. The chemical structure of folium resembles that of other dyes.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. What should be done to make ancient blue dyes last.
B. When and where the discovery of the dye was made.
C. Why the researchers took the trouble to study the dye.
D. How the mystery of a 1000-year-old blue dye was solved.

Mammals tend to get huge when they invade the ocean. Why? Most of the explanations for this trend treat the ocean as a kind of release. The water partly frees mammals from gravity, allowing them to evolve heavy bodies. But to William Gearty from Stanford University, the ocean makes mammals so big not because it relieves them of limits, but because it sets new ones.
“To deal with the constant loss of heat as you get into the water, the easiest way is to get bigger. he explains, “As bodies balloon volume increases faster than surface area does, so you produce more heat in your body but lose comparatively less of it from your skin.”
But there is a limit because larger bodies also demand more fuel, and there’s only so much food that an animal can reasonably get. Therefore, the need to stay warm sets a floor for the body size, while the need to eat sets a ceiling. And the gap between them, Gearty found, is surprisingly narrow, “The minimum size of oceanic mammals is thousands of times larger than the minimum for mammals on land, but the maximum size is only 25 times larger,” says Gcarty.
These trends suggest that the water places strict size limits. Oceanic mammals must be just the right size -- big, yes, but not too big and not too small.
And as always in biology, there are exceptions. Whales go way beyond the size limit. Nick Pyenson from the Smithsonian Institution thinks he knows why. Around 3 million years ago, a combination of changes to glaciers (冰川), winds, and currents created a large increase of nutrients in coastal waters, which then fed lots of shrimps and small fish -- potential prey (猎物) for whales.
But these bonanzas weren’t evenly distributed. Instead, they were concentrated in particular places far apart from each other all -- you-can-eat buffets separated by food deserts. And that Pyenson says, is why the giant whales evolved. They are adapted to hunt down concentrated prey. Their huge size allows them to survive for a long distance without encountering any food. And they evolved a special technique of feeding. The existence of concentrated prey, and the evolution of a technique for capturing them, allowed whales to break the size ceiling. That’s why they transformed from big animals into the biggest animals that ever existed.
32.Which of the following statement does Wiliam Gearty agree with?
A. Gravity allows sea mammals to evolve heavy bodies.
B. The ocean puts size restrictions on oceanic mammals.
C. Huge oceanic mammals lose more heat from their skins.
D. Bigness helps sea mammals to survive in food deserts.
33.What can we infer from the text?
A. The sea mammals have to get as big as they can to hunt for food.
B. The need to stay warm decides the size ceiling of oceanic mammals.
C. The maximum size of an oceanic mammal depends on its food supply.
D. The smallest mammals in the ocean are 25 times as big as those on land.
34.What does the underlined word “bonanzas” in the last paragraph probably refers to?
A. buffets and deserts. B. shrimps and small fish.
C. glaciers and currents D. nutrients and waters.
35. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To emphasize the importance of big size for the whale.
B. To introduce how whales evolve to survive in the ocean.
C. To explain what influences the sizes of oceanic mammals.
D. To appeal for more scientific studies on oceanic mammals.

Are You a Prisoner of Perfection?
Do you struggle for a goal that is beyond your reach? 36 Are you setting yourself up for failure and shame when you can’t achieve the unachievable? Understanding what drives perfectionism is the first step toward releasing this self-crated anchor that keeps us stuck.
Shame and fear arc often the hidden drivers of perfectionism. We believe that if we can fashion a perfectly polished personality, flash our intelligence, and perfect our humour, then no one can hurt us with criticism and we’ll win respect and approval.
37 Politicians who display a desperate need to be right and refuse to acknowledge mistakes or uncertainty are often driven by a secret shame. They fear that showing vulnerability (弱点) will expose them to the accusation that they’re weak. They stick to a desire to be right perfect, and polished, even when it’s obvious that the emperor has no clothes.
Perfectionism keeps us leaning toward the future. We’re constantly evaluating ourselves in order to do better. 38 However, if we can’t relax and enjoy lighter moments, then we become prisoners of our perfectionism. We get painfully self-conscious and take ourselves too seriously, Sadly, we deprive (剥夺) ourselves of the simple pleasure of enjoying the moment and being ourselves.
39 We realize that failing at any enterprise doesn’t mean that we are a failure. Without failures, we’ll never lean from our mistakes, we’ll never move forward in our lives. Those who succeed have made countless mistakes. The important thing is to learn from our error, forgive ourselves and move on.
Being human, perfection is impossible. 40 Releasing ourselves from the desire to protect our image, we’re freed to sail gracefully through our successes and failures -- and enjoy our precious life.
A. Do you hold an idealized vision that is impossible to realize?
B. A cure to perfectionism is to make room for our human shortcomings.
C. Do you fear that others will be horrified by what you judge about yourself?
D. The addiction to staying perfect protects us from any sign of being imperfect.
E. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do our best and self-correcting along the way.
F. People who are addicted to perfection are often isolated, even if they seem outgoing and popular.
G. By accepting ourselves as we are and doing our best, we begin to rid the shame that drives perfectionism.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一完整的短文。
“BEES ARE DYING!” Doodlebug Pinkley cried, thrusting his latest copy of World of the Weird at his sister Dandelion. His favorite magazine had a lot of strange but important content. This month it was insects in danger. The number of certain bugs, including bees, was falling sharply all over the world.
“It’s terrible!” Dandelion replied, after reading the article. They were siting on the outdoor patio(露台) of Cool Yule’s Ice Cream Shop.
“Maybe we could make a bee roof garden, too -- like in this article,” Doodlebug suggested. Yule recommended making it on the patio, adding a pollinator (传粉昆虫) garden up there would attract bees -- and more customers. “Brilliant!” Everyone else responded in a chorus.
Now the problem was how to get the funds. Dandelion proposed raising money by setting up a booth near the shop’s entrance to alert people and ask them to donate. The plan was a go!
The next day their friends Bog, Tomiko and Izzy met Doodlebug and Dandelion inside Yule’s. Everyone was excited. They made handouts explaining how the garden would attract pollinators, do something to help prevent flooding, and improve the air.
“We should have a bee mascot (吉祥物),” lzzy suggested. Doodlebug recalled the old bee costume that his Mom wore for Halloween once. Over the enthusiastic uproar, Dandelion shouted, “And you’ll be the bee, Doodlebug!” “WlLL NOT!” Doodlebug shot back. “Too big. We need to stuff some grownup into that costume.” But who, then? For ten mad minutes the kids debated loudly.
“Silence, you little noisy kids!” someone suddenly roared. “I’m trying to read about bees in danger!” The whole crew turned in shock. There sat Doodlebug’s horrible teacher, Mrs. Noodleknocker. Doodlebug had discovered long ago that she was a World of the Weird fan, but that didn’t make her any nicer. “Bees and butterflies need help!” Mrs. Noodleknocker cried. “But a person can’t even worry about them peacefully!”

Doodlebug 's eyes went wide as a brilliant idea came to mind, “THE BEE!" he exclaimed and pointed at Mrs. Noodleknocker, only to be greeted with a glare. Dandelion detailed their plan and asked her to be the bee mascot. “No way!" she rejected the proposal immediately, turning back to her magazine. Tomiko responded boldly, emphasizing that it was the key to the success of the whole plan. “please, lady?" Bog coaxed, adding that her favor might double the fund. “OK..just once." Mrs, Noodleknocker finally gave in, with her irritable expression softened a bit.
The bee campaign was a massive success! On the day of fundraising, Mrs, Noodleknocker rocked the bee costume in her pollinator glory, The following hours witnessed “the bee” buzzing around the booth, arms punching. Whenever her insect eyes landed on someone, the victim quickly forked over cash-even without being stung. A few weeks later, Cool Yule's bee garden bloomed spectacularly, attracting customers and bees from all around. And Mrs. Noodleknocker was almost a nice person from then on. It turned out that being a bee was good for anyone.

I know.”
