Many people always say that listening to spoken English is too hard for them. But if you don’t understand what people are saying, how can you talk with them? It may be difficult, but learning by listening is necessary.
As we all know, different people have different pronunciations of the same word. Standard (标准的) pronunciation is important for English speaking as well as for listening. In China, people from one area may not understand what people from another area are saying because of the different Chinese dialects (方言). Standard Chinese pronunciation can help people from different places understand each other easily. It is the same with English. If your pronunciation is not standard, it is hard for other people to understand you.
If you want to learn how to listen to English. The following ways are helpful.
Get some good books with tapes. Do the exercises, from the simple to the difficult, step by step.
You can also watch English-language films and TV programs, and listen to English-language radio.
Try to listen every day, even if only for a few minutes. At first you may understand few words. Don’t give up. Just listen.
Remember to read and speak English every day. It will help you a lot. Spend an hour reading English every day. Finally you will notice that you are making progress.
Talk to English-speaking foreigners as often as possible. Foreigners will speak slowly with you, and use simple words and body language to help you understand them. Don’t be afraid to talk to them. They won’t mind if you have trouble because they may have more trouble making themselves understood in Chinese.

A library is a place to keep books and store knowledge. Recently libraries are not as popular as before because people prefer(更喜爱) to use the Internet to find out information, rather than books. With a click of a mouse, it is possible to find out almost anything that people care to know.
But being in a room that is full of books is a fantastic thing. Just think about how many words there are in a library. Each of those words has been thought of and carefully chosen by tens of thousands of people. That must make it a special place to be.
Maybe all kinds of things can happen in libraries. Sometimes, you see that a library is used for poetry(诗歌) workshops or guitar lessons. Also, there may be writers visiting and talking about their books. All of these activities are much better because they are in a library.
Lots of schools have libraries. If your school has a library, it’s probably not just a place to read books. Libraries are also quiet places to be. They are calmer than the playground or the dining hall. It’s the books that keep us calm and peaceful.

The customs and traditions are different in different countries. So is Father’s Day. The dates and ways of the celebrations of Father’s Day are not the same everywhere.
Father’s Day is celebrated to thank fathers and express gratitude(感激) for their love. In Canada, it is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. People wear roses to express thanks and love to their fathers. This is also a time for a family reunion, because children often stay away from their family and this is a good time for them to get together with their fathers and other loved ones. But in Australia, it is celebrated on the first Sunday in September. The day is celebrated only in families. It’s a good way to celebrate Father's Day by having a big family dinner. In Thailand, Father’s Day falls on December 5th every year. All the people have a one-day holiday. You can see many people are in yellow and the streets are decorated in yellow because Father's Day is also the King's birthday.

David, aged 14, wants everyone in his school to know they’re important members of the school. People are connected with each other. No one is an island.
One day, David saw a sad boy on the playground. After talking with the boy, he knew that the boy felt lonely because he couldn’t fit in well in the school. David remembered seeing some other students who felt lonely, too. This made David come up with an idea. He wanted to give something special to everyone in the school to remind them that they were connected. David told his parents his idea. And they were very glad to support him.
After discussing the idea with his teachers and classmates, he decided on buttons (徽章). Together with his classmates, David printed the buttons with the sentence “You Belong Here!” Then they gave the buttons to each student in the school. David hoped that the buttons would help the students remember that they all belonged here. He also hoped the students could make friends actively.

I hit a stranger as he walked by me. “Oh, excuse me,” I said. He replied with a smile and said, “Please excuse me, too. I wasn't watching out for you.” We said sorry to each other and went our own ways.
Later that day, when I was cooking, my daughter was standing too close to me. When I turned to reach for some milk, I nearly knocked her over.
“Move out of the way!” I shouted. She walked away sadly. While I was in bed that evening, my husband said to me, “While dealing with a stranger, you were polite, but with the daughter you love, you were unkind. Your daughter brought you some flowers that she picked herself this afternoon. You'll find them in the kitchen by the door.”
I quietly went to my daughter's bed. “Dear, I'm so sorry,” I said. “Are these the flowers you picked for me?”
She said, “I found them by the tree. I picked them because they're pretty like you. I knew you'd like them.”
I replied, “I'm really sorry for the way I acted today. I shouldn't have shouted at you.”
“It's okay. I love you anyway,” she said as she kissed me.

An old saying goes, “Laughter is the best medicine.” It’s true that laughter is really good for our health. So, the next time you’re feeling stressed, try to laugh a lot, develop a sense of humor and watch funny films.
The Comic Relief charity, an organization that helps people in need, uses laughter to raise money. Every two years in spring, many English people put on a red nose, make a fool of themselves and do “silly” things to make themselves and others laugh. Examples of silly things you can do are:
Invite friends round to your house to watch funny films. They have to pay to watch the films and for food and drinks. Those with the most comfortable chairs pay more.
Hold a talent show at school and ask your friends and teachers to sing, dance or tell jokes. Sell tickets for the show to the rest of the school.
Have a red nose party at your house. All your friends come dressed in red, including red nose, and you serve red food and drinks. If they don’t wear red, they have to pay a fine(罚款).
Get the students in your school to make funny sculptures using all kinds of things. Sell tickets to your Red Nose Day exhibition and part of the money goes to Comic Relief.
The organization has helped people for more than 20 years. And how much have they collected since the first Red Nose Day? Over £600 million! The idea of Red Nose Day has traveled to other countries, too. In New Zealand, for example, people have made big red noses which they put on the front of cars and even buildings.

Paper is very important today. But it was not invented recently—it has a long history.
A long time ago, people wrote on things, like walls and wood. Later, people in Egypt wrote on papyrus (纸莎草). Papyrus is a plant. The word “paper” comes from papyrus.
In 105 AD in China, Cai Lun told the emperor he had made paper. He made paper from cotton, plants, and old fish nets. Before this, Chinese people wrote on bamboo and silk. So, he was considered the first Chinese to make paper.
In 150 AD, old paper was found in the Great Wall in China. This is the oldest paper with writing on it. Later, people in Japan, India, the Middle East, and Europe learned to make paper. They tried lots of ways to make paper. Finally, in 1276, the first paper factory in Europe was built in Italy.
But at that time, making paper was difficult and expensive. Luckily, in 1840, Germany invented a machine to make paper. Because of that, paper became cheap enough for everyone to buy.
Today, besides writing and printing, paper is also usually used for packaging things. What other purposes can paper be used for? You name it!
27.Who made the first paper in China?
28.Where was old paper found in China?
29.When was the first paper factory built in Europe?
30.Why was paper cheap enough for everyone to buy after 1840?

32 I didn’t use to like writing in English. Whenever I wrote English composition, I had no idea where to start. One day, I met Mr. Li. He told me how to improve English writing. According to what he said, I write a diary every day. Now I can write a composition. A good way is half done.
33 Tom always feels nervous before an exam, and finds it is hard to fall asleep. However, if one couldn’t sleep well, he will get tired and won’t get good grades. A cup of milk will make him feel better, so does a walk.
34 Everyone has his own dream. Some want to be doctors. Others hope to be scientists. My dream is to become a teacher. Teachers can not only teach us many things at school but also they do their best to teach us how to learn. Thanks to them, we learn knowledge. And at the same time, we learn how to live a happy life. They spend most time on their students. They are great in my eyes.
35 The TV is very popular in the world today. The TV was watched by millions of people. It was invented in 1927. Now it is widely used in many homes. On TV we can see and hear what is happening in the world every day. We can see a lot of interesting programs. So I think it was an important invention.
36 From Monday to Friday, we have to get to school before 7: 00 in the morning. We must wear school uniforms. And I think it is good for us because uniforms can make us look smart. We must listen to our teachers carefully in class and finish our homework after school. We are not allowed to use mobile phones in class. I think the rules are very strict but useful, and we should follow them. However, we have so much homework that we have little free time to do what we love to do.

Do you like doing homework? It seems that homework has given students much trouble since it appeared, but it has a special purpose in its history.
Why was homework invented?
Public schools appeared about 150 to 200 years ago. 那时孩子们在学校花的时间不多。They were expected to help with housework.
As the Industrial Revolution (工业革命) provided new jobs which required more working skills, students were taught subjects which were more difficult. It was impossible for them to learn everything by just paying attention in class. That was probably why teachers invented homework. The development of society has made homework part of modern education system (体系).
Is homework good or bad?
What can homework bring students?◇A better memory and thinking ability
◇A chance to review what they have learned
◇Good study habits
There are few reasons which can be named against homework. The only situation where homework is harmful is when there is too much of it. Except for that, homework is useful in every way. Children nowadays deal with lots of information every day. They can get any kind of information within seconds. But this may cause them to get used to satisfying their need without making an effort. They may have difficulty facing the challenges in the future, because anything really great will require them to put in a lot of hard work. Homework is sometimes difficult, but it is one of the best tools educators have to teach students how to think and develop good habits. That is the main reason why it remains part of every school.

I’m taking a walk with Mr. Wang. I see some students over there on the playground. They run away quickly, leaving something behind them. We go over to the things. They are a backpack, a math exercise book and a soccer. I think the backpack must be Lisa’s, because I often see her wear it. And the math exercise book must be Lucy’s. Only she can write such special handwriting, because she writes with her left hand. As for the soccer, Mr. Wang thinks it might be Frank’s. He likes playing soccer. But it can’t be his. There is a “G” on the soccer ball. It must be George’s. He also likes playing soccer. And he likes copying others’ homework, too. Now, we get to know why they run away. George must be copying Lucy’s math homework because he was busy playing soccer yesterday and had no time to do his homework. They were afraid of us. So they hurried off and left the things as soon as they saw us.

Crosstalk, or xiangsheng, is one of China’s most popular performing arts. People of all ages love it — kids, grandparents, and everyone in between find it super fun. Even many young students enjoy it after class, laughing along with performers on stage.
No one knows exactly when crosstalk started. Some say the Ming Dynasty, but most think it became a real art during the Qing Dynasty when cities were full of energy. At first, one person did dankou (solo acts), telling silly stories or jokes. Later, when three or more joined, it was qunkou (group acts). But today, the most common is duikou (two-person acts). In duikou, there’s a “funny leader” (dougen) who makes most jokes, and a “helper” (penggen) who laughs, asks silly questions, or makes the jokes even funnier. They chat about daily life or silly things, making the audience laugh nonstop.
Crosstalk has four key skills: shuo (telling stories/jokes), xue (copying sounds — like how cats meow or grandpas cough), dou (making people laugh with silly words/faces), and chang (singing short folk tunes). These are taught by older actors to new students, learning by doing.
In recent years, online videos have made crosstalk even more popular. In 2008, China named it a “national intangible heritage” to help keep this funny art alive for more people.
So next time you watch, remember: every laugh comes from lots of practice and happy sharing!

Do you think that living a hungry life is last century’s story? Well, it may be this century’s headline.
The world has growing worries about a global food shortage. Right now, there are still 870 million hungry people in the world, according to a survey of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization. Children can’t escape this, either. Around fifteen million children die of hunger each year.
What’s causing food shortages? There are several reasons.
There are now more droughts and floods. This is very harmful to farmers and their ability to grow food.
Besides, with the growing population, feeding everyone becomes more difficult. There are a little more than seven billion people in the world. By 2050, the world population will be more than nine billion.
Another reason is food waste. The average person throws away 50kg of food every year.
How can we help with food shortages? The easiest way is to cut down on food waste.
Next time before throwing away the food on your plate, just think how much work has been done to make it. By buying less, we waste less. This takes the pressure off producing so much food. And it helps to solve the problem of food shortage.
You can also ask your schoolmates to join you.
In 2013, researchers at Kansas State University in the US put up short anti-waste slogans (标语) in dining rooms, “Think Before You Waste”. Guess what happened? Students wasted fifteen percent less food after that!
The author of the study said, “You don’t need a huge activity to make a difference.”

Kongzi, Confucius in English, is a great philosopher. He lived in China from 551 BC to 479 BC. He gave China and the world deep thoughts and ideas about life and how to live it well. They are known far and wide. Also, his works are studied in many top universities.
Confucius found out three main truths about a good life. First, he said we should respect (尊重) the king. Next, we should do everything possible to respect each other. Finally, he believed that we can have a really good and happy life if we learn to live in harmony(和谐). This means that we should try to find a way to live peacefully both with each other, and with the natural world.
During his lifetime, Confucius traveled across China, working as a teacher. Wherever possible, he tried to put his ideas into action. None of his wise sayings were written down while he was alive. His followers collected them after his death. One of his greatest thoughts is that “Don't do to others what you do not want others to do to you.” Slowly, people everywhere learned about his wisdom.
