Every culture has its own way of celebrating the arrival of a new year, and these traditions offer a fascinating look into local customs and values.
In Vietnam, Tet Nguyen Dan, or Tet, is the most important holiday. Families spend weeks cleaning their homes to sweep away bad luck. On New Year’s Eve, they gather for a feast with special dishes like banh chung (sticky rice cakes), which symbolize prosperity. Children receive red envelopes with money, and people visit relatives to exchange good wishes.
In Scotland, Hogmanay is celebrated with lively street parties, especially in Edinburgh. A popular tradition is “first-footing” — the first person to enter a home after midnight should bring gifts like shortbread or whisky to bring good fortune. Fireworks light up the sky, and people sing Auld Lang Syne at midnight.
In Japan, Oshogatsu is a time for reflection and new beginnings. Many people visit temples to pray for a good year, and families eat toshikoshi soba (long noodles) to wish for a long life. Homes are decorated with kodomatsu — arrangements of pine, bamboo, and plum branches, which represent longevity and resilience.
These diverse New Year traditions from around the world not only showcase the rich cultural heritage of different countries but also reflect the common values of family, prosperity, and new beginnings that unite people across the globe.

A. Hogmanay. B. Oshogatsu. C. Tet Nguyen Dan. D. Auld Lang Syne.

Hearing a rhythmic (有节奏的) loud sound of something hitting something else, I turned my head in the direction of the sound to see a cook working in front of his shop.
The man was swinging a rope of dough (生面团) between his hands. He raised the dough and firmly slapped it repeatedly against the countertop (操作台). As he continued slapping it, the dough stretched longer and longer. Holding the centre of the strand, he then split the dough down the middle to form a loop (环). At last, he tossed it into a waiting pot of bubbling water.
I was attracted by this display, so I asked the chef for a serving. Minutes later, a bowl of thick noodles soaked in hot chilli oil and vinegar and sprinkled with spring onions and garlic (蒜) was brought to me. The noodles were as wide as a belt and nearly as long as one too. Their firm texture (口感) offered a satisfying bite. The slapping technique, as it turned out, helped the noodles to absorb the rich flavours of the seasonings.
Here in Xi’an, the craft of noodle-pulling is so closely connected with that slapping sound that the noise ended up inspiring this dish’s curious name: biangbiang noodles.
The “biang” character is thought to be like the sound of dough hitting a counter. It is also believed to be more complex to write than any other character in the Chinese language, with 58 strokes. I was surprised to discover that the character doesn’t actually exist — at least, not according to official dictionaries. That’s because the character is entirely a folk creation. Taking a closer look at the symbol, I realised that it is also made up of many distinct elements. Together, they paint a picture of Xi’an’s rich history.
Hiding in biang, for example, is the Chinese character for silk. Xi’an was the starting point of the Silk Road. Along those trade routes, horses not only provided a primary means of transport, but were traded as well. It makes sense, then, that the biang character containing the symbol for horse. On either side of the horse symbol, the Chinese character meaning “long” or “length” also appears. Whether this be viewed as a reference to the Silk Road or to the noodles themselves, both would seem appropriate.
It’s unclear exactly how the complex character originated. One widely told story credits it to a young scholar from the Qin dynasty who didn’t have enough money for his bowl of biangbiang noodles and offered to invent a character instead of payment. Today, there are amusing poems people can recite to help recall all of the complicated character’s numerous strokes.
4. Paragraph 2 mainly talks about _________.
A. the origin of biangbiang noodles B. the process of making biangbiang noodles
C. how biangbiang noodles smell and taste D. the thing that makes noodles in Xi’an special
5. Based on information from the article, a bowl of biangbiang noodles includes all of the following ingredients EXCEPT _________.
A. salted horse meat B. chili oil and vinegar
C. belt-like wide noodles D. spring onions and garlic
6. Which of the following statements about the biang character is NOT true?
A. It has been included in most official dictionaries.
B. Its structure reflects the long and rich history of Xi’an.
C. Its pronunciation is like the sound of dough hitting the counter.
D. Interesting rhymes were invented to help people remember how to write it.
7. What is the author’s intention in writing the article?
A. To tell readers that the biang character does not exist.
B. To summarise the characteristics of biang and the way to write it.
C. To inform readers of biangbiang noodles and the culture reflected.
D. To remind readers to be curious all the time and that learning is everywhere.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup has become a powerful force, not only in sports but also in driving social change and promoting gender equality globally. What started as a small tournament in China in 1991 has grown into a major international event, attracting millions of viewers worldwide. In the latest edition, teams from different continents showed great skills — for example, the Spanish team dominated with their possession-based play, while the Australian team fought hard at home, winning fans with their determination.
One of the biggest impacts is inspiring young girls to pursue football with tenacity. When girls see women athletes overcome numerous challenges and succeed on the world stage, they realize football isn’t just for men. This has led to more girls joining local clubs and youth leagues. In countries like the U.S., where the women’s national team has many fans, the number of young female players has increased significantly.
The tournament also helps promote gender equality. By giving female athletes a platform equal to men’s, it challenges old gender ideas. As women players get more media attention, sponsorships, and public recognition, it sends a strong message: women can succeed in sports and any field. Brands that used to focus on male athletes now partner with female players, and media cover women’s football more.
However, the Women’s World Cup still faces challenges. There’s a big pay gap between male and female players in many national teams, and the prize money is much lower than the men’s tournament. In some places, there’s not enough investment in grassroots women’s football, which affects young talent development.
Still, each tournament breaks barriers and makes a positive difference. It shows that sports can be a powerful tool for change, inspiring a new generation and pushing for a more inclusive and equal world.
8. What can we know about the development of the FIFA Women’s World Cup?
A. It was first held in China in 1991 with a small scale.
B. Its global viewership has decreased in recent editions.
C. Teams from all continents now show similar playing styles.
D. The tournament’s organizational budget has remained unchanged
9. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “tenacity”?
A. Technical skill. B. Financial support.
C. Strong perseverance. D. Lasting teamwork.
10. What can be inferred about gender equality from Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. Media coverage has eliminated the gender gap in sports reporting.
B. The pay gap issue will be resolved within the next World Cup cycle.
C. Increased sponsorships reflect a shift in societal attitudes.
D. Grassroots investment has achieved balanced development globally.
11. Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?
A. The Women’s World Cup has overcome all challenges to achieve gender equality in sports.
B. The tournament’s growth highlights its role in social change despite existing obstacles.
C. Host countries gain significant economic benefits from sponsoring the Women’s World Cup.
D. Female footballers deserve higher prize money and more media attention worldwide.

The Banaue Rice Terraces (梯田) in Ifugao Province in the Philippines offer a great sight. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is also rich in history and features how human creativity can produce amazing outcomes. Through hard work, the Ifugao native managed to survive by flattening the mountain’s surface layer by layer and using them as farmlands. This practice of more than two thousand years has put together a well-known wonder.
There are several rice terraces in the Ifugao region but the Banaue Rice Terraces are the most popular tourist spot. The photos of this area are often used in printed materials like textbooks magazines and postcards. After getting a good look at the rice terraces, I was reminded of the first time that I saw their pictures in our textbook during my elementary days. I already found them amusing as a kid and seeing their beauty as an adult got me more amazed.
The tourism officer told us that we were lucky to catch them in their greenest form. If you plan to visit this tourist spot as well, you should take note that we got there last June 1. You can also take into consideration that the rice planting cycle is typically 3 to 6 months.
Unlike the other terraces, the local government created a platform that makes it easy for everyone to get a closer look at the rice terraces. The platform has four stone statues that they refer to as rice protectors.
It’s sad that the younger generation of Ifugaos are slowly abandoning the rice terraces. According to tour guide Alvin, the part of the rice terraces where people can see thick bushes and trees were former rice fields. But the children who inherited (继承) those decided to give up farming and work in big cities instead. I hope that a new farming method with modern equipment will encourage the Ifugaos to continue their rice terraces farming tradition to protect this cultural treasure.
12. What can be learned about the Banaue RiceTerraces?
A. They are most known for their history.
B. They were made to mainly draw tourists.
C. The locals created them with great wisdom and effort.
D. Many mountains and lakes were turned into farmlands.
13. Why does the author mention his childhood experience?
A. To show the Banaue Rice Terraces are really attractive.
B. To show Ifugao Province is heavily dependent on tourism.
C. To show the Banaue Rice Terraces are more suitable for kids to visit.
D. To show advertisements for the Banaue Rice Terraces spread rapidly.
14. What is Paragraph 3 intended to do?
A. Tell us some facts about rice planting.
B. Encourage more people to go to Ifugao.
C. Raise public awareness of local traditions.
D. Share the proper time to visit the Banaue Rice Terraces.
15. How does the author feel about the future of the Banaue Rice Terraces?
A. Worried.
B. Positive.
C. Confused.
D. Curious.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I have finally reached a place I never thought imaginable ... I now enjoy cooking for my family.
While I’ve always been good at cooking, the challenge of planning a week’s worth of groceries and using up all the ingredients always seemed a huge task to me. Leftover produce would rot (腐烂) in my fridge in its plastic packages. ___16___ Most of the time, it was just easier to grab takeout on the way home.
Also, though my husband and I shared the cooking, the constant planning and last-minute trips to the store were never ending, and we hated it. ___17___ But the idea of being sent a box with a specific amount of carrot slices in a little packet just felt strange to me.
Thinking twice, I chose to sign up for a weekly produce box from our local grocery store. ___18___ The contents vary each week, depending on the season and often include local produce. Cooking this way was a much scarier task at first. You don’t really know what you are getting so it requires you to plan your meals around what you have and be creative. ___19___
After a lot of practice and patience, this “mystery box” cooking has made me skilled at meal planning and food management. I’ve learned broader skills, like understanding what each ingredient brings to a dish, which allows me to experiment and make replacements confidently.
___20___ I look forward to discovering what’s in my box and building meals from there. As my kids grow up, I hope to involve them too, so they can grow up excited and curious about food — even if they still prefer French fries.
A This made me feel guilty about wasting them.
B. Dealing with this waste felt like a piece of cake.
C. At first, this uncertainty even made me more stressed.
D. Now, instead of hating meal planning, I find it exciting.
E. Though it was a tough start, the payoff has been life-changing.
F. An obvious solution would have been a meal kit delivery service.
G. It provides enough fresh food for a family like ours for one week.

57. 阅读下列材料,根据内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The familiar smell of garlic and onion filled the air as I opened my lunch bag to see what my mom had packed for me. On any other occasion, I would have been delighted to eat my mom’s pan-fried tofu: a Chinese dish that I often ate for dinner. But not today, the day a nice girl had invited me, the new girl at school, to sit with her friends during lunch.
“Charis, over here!” My new friend was waving her arms, trying to get my attention.
As I prepared to walk over to the table, memories of elementary and middle school lunchtimes resurfaced. I remembered my embarrassment as my friends would hold their noses when I brought homemade Chinese food. I remembered how my embarrassment shifted to anger when I complained about the smell to my mom.
I had argued with my mom that I wanted “normal” food for lunch. I remembered the look on my mom’s face, a mix between disappointment and confusion. But I was determined and she gave in. So for the remainder of middle school, my mom packed odorless (没有气味的), non-Chinese food like ham and cheese sandwiches. However, that day, she was in a rush and packed me leftovers from dinner.
As soon as I got to my new lunch table, I tried to hide my lunch bag down under my seat. I sat quietly, trying not to be noticed when Katrina, a new acquaintance, asked where my food was. “I’m not really hungry,” I replied in an insecure voice. But Katrina had already seen me carry my lunch so she spoke out, “Then, I’ll eat it!” The other girls laughed — apparently Katrina was known to be a big eater.
I didn’t want to be rude to a potentially new friend, so I reluctantly dragged out my lunch bag. The moment I lifted the lid (盖子) of my lunch container, I could practically taste the garlic and onion. The girls, piqued (激起好奇心) by the smell in the air, all curiously looked at the oval-shaped container. I expected an “Ew” or a “What is that?”

【答案】Dear Tom,
On hearing that you are scheduled to celebrate the Spring Festival in China this year, I’m more than honored to invite you to enjoy our New Year’s Eve together.
As the most important festival in China, the Spring Festival is celebrated to say goodbye to the old and greet the new. During the festival, people, immersed in the warm and charming atmosphere, will have many a way to celebrate it. We are to have a family reunion to experience the enjoyment of a big dinner, after which we will set off fireworks to welcome its coming. In addition, chances are that you can taste the fun of the traditional paper-cutting, which expresses people’s longing for a better life. Not only will you be deeply in love with Chinese culture, but you will also have a good time.
I would appreciate it if you could accept my invitation. Best wishes for a happy Spring Festival in China. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】I expected them to turn away — and turn me away. What I did not expect was that Katrina instantly grabbed a small piece of tofu and eat it. And I most certainly did not expect her to encourage the rest of the table to try my lunch. My new friends were going on about how lucky I was that my mom took the time to prepare a cooked meal for me. They were surprised by the fact that tofu could actually taste good. While I didn’t get to eat any of my mom's pan-fried tofu, I was full of pride and gratitude.
When I arrived home, my mom asked how my day went. Answering with a simple “Good,” I pulled out my lunch container from my bag. “I’m sorry, but I didn’t have time to buy bread or ham yesterday.” But when she noticed that the container was empty, she hesitated before asking “How was the food?” I paused a moment before I replied, “Perfect, mom. If it’s not too much trouble, can I still have pan-fried tofu for lunch tomorrow?” (161 words)
