Every September, as summer ends and the first day of school approaches, I spend a lot of time thinking about darkness.
Perhaps other teachers would say the same, jokingly. But I teach a high school course on trauma (创伤) literature, and my students belong to a generation described as the most spoiled (宠坏的), stressed and easily hurt in history. So the question of darkness is often on my mind.
In 2016, Collins Dictionary included “snowflake generation” among its Words of the Year, describing young adults of the 2010s as a group “less resilient (适应的) and more likely to feel upset than previous generations.”
But after twelve years of teaching this course, which covers some of the most emotionally difficult texts in contemporary literature — narratives (讲述) of war, slavery and so on — I’m pretty sure the comment on my young students is wrong. In particular, I don’t buy the narrative that this generation lacks the resilience necessary for difficult literature. For years, I’ve watched my students circle tirelessly around some difficult questions that puzzle us. Instead of hiding from that world, they try to change it in a way that will allow them to control it successfully.
This is why every September, I ask my students to read the most difficult books I can find. I don’t do this to hurt them. Literature is practice. And I want my students, through these difficult books, to practice living. I want them to practice recognizing historical gaps and to bridge them.
“But this too is true: stories can save us,” writes Tim O’Brien in The Things They Carried. I believe and stick to that idea, year after year, on the first day of school. Not because these stories will save my students. But because I’m hoping my students will grow up and save the rest of us.
4. What are the young adults of the 2010s like according to the Collins Dictionary?
A. Unsocial and anxious. B. Stressed but strong-willed.
C. Sensitive and greedy. D. Enthusiastic but self-centered.
5. What does the underlined word “buy” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Pay. B. Believe. C. Obtain. D. Suspect.
6. Why does the author disagree with what the young adults are called?
A. The author has no knowledge of the young adults.
B What the author wants is to help the young adults hide.
C. The author doesn’t know the meaning of “snowflake generation”.
D. The author knows a lot about the young adults from teaching them.
7. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To comment on the new generation again. B. To recommend some trauma literature.
C. To introduce some teaching experiences. D. To seek some advice from the public.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. D 7. A

细节理解题。根据第三段“In 2016, Collins Dictionary included “snowflake generation” among its Words of the Year, describing young adults of the 2010s as a group “less resilient (适应的) and more likely to feel upset than previous generations.”(2016年,《柯林斯词典》将“雪花一代”列入年度词汇,形容2010年代的年轻人“比前几代人更缺乏适应能力,更容易感到不安。”)”可知,根据《柯林斯词典》,2010年代的年轻人不爱社交的,更容易焦虑的。故选A。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“I’m pretty sure the comment on my young students is wrong.( 我很确信对我年轻学生的评论是错误的)”可知,作者确信这种说法是错的,再根据划线词句“In particular, I don’t buy the narrative that this generation lacks the resilience necessary for difficult literature.(特别是,我不buy这样的说法,即这一代人缺乏应对艰涩文学所必需的韧性)”可知,本句承接上文,意思是作者不相信这种错误说法。从而推断buy是“相信”的同义或近义词。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“For years, I’ve watched my students circle tirelessly around some difficult questions that puzzle us. Instead of hiding from that world, they try to change it in a way that will allow them to control it successfully.(多年来,我看到我的学生不知疲倦地围绕着一些迷惑我们的难题。他们不是躲避那个世界,而是试图以一种能让他们成功控制它的方式改变它)”可知,作者通过多年的教学经验,了解了很多关于他们的事情,才反对把这代年轻人叫做“雪花一代”。故选D。

Starting in the late 1980s, the plastics industry spent tens of millions of dollars encouraging recycling through ads and recycling projects, telling people plastics could be recycled, but their own internal records showed that industry officials long knew that plastic recycling on a large scale comes with high costs but poor results.
A report sent to top industry directors in 1973 said that plastic recycling was not as easy as people thought and sorting plastic was impractical. Another document a year later showed that there was serious doubt that plastic recycling can get profits on an economic basis.
Despite this, three former top officials said the industry supports recycling as a way to beat back a growing trend of stopping using plastics in the 1980s. “The plastics industry is under fire, but we want to continue to make plastic products,” Thomas, an official from a company making plastics says.“ If the public think the recycling is working, then they’re not going to be so worried about the environment.”
“The public gradually doubt the idea that the plastics industry could do a satisfying job in dealing with plastics and protecting the environment. But now we have already funded new technologies to change this situation. We don’t want to see the pollution of the environment either and are willing to solve the problem,” says Jim Becker, vice president of Chevron Phillips Plastics Company.
However, the more plastics are recycled, the less money the industry will make. And the industry now produces many more different kinds of plastics that are more costly to sort and in many cases can’t be recycled at all. Efforts to reduce the use of plastics are increasing worldwide, but any plan to slow the growth of plastics will cause the whole industry to lose billions of dollars in the future.
8. What problem is mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. Too expensive plastics recycling.
B. Failure in recycling plastics in right ways.
C. Lack of advanced technologies in plastic recycling.
D. Environmental problems from increasing recycling needs.
9. According to Paragraph 3, companies making plastics_______.
A. don’t make new plastics products
B. try to teach people to sort plastic products
C. encourage people to recycle plastics for more sales
D. think environmental problems are hard to deal with
10. What can be learned from Becker’s words in Paragraph 4?
A. He devotes himself to selling more high-tech products.
B. He wants to change the public’s understanding of plastics.
C. The plastics industry is praised by the public for its efforts.
D. The plastics industry starts taking on more social responsibilities.
11. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Reducing plastics production has become a new trend.
B. Changes in prices of plastics increase the difficulty of recycling.
C. Plastics recycling puts the plastics industry in a difficult situation.
D. The plastics industry spends more improving the plastics quality.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. C

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Starting in the late 1980s, the plastics industry spent tens of millions of dollars encouraging recycling through ads and recycling projects, telling people plastics could be recycled, but their own internal records showed that industry officials long knew that plastic recycling on a large scale comes with high costs but poor results.(从上世纪80年代末开始,塑料行业花费了数千万美元,通过广告和回收项目鼓励回收,告诉人们塑料可以回收,但他们自己的内部记录显示,行业管理人员早就知道,大规模的塑料回收成本高,但效果不佳)”可知,第一段提到了塑料回收太贵的问题。故选A。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中““The plastics industry is under fire, but we want to continue to make plastic products,” Thomas, an official from a company making plastics says.“ If the public think the recycling is working, then they’re not going to be so worried about the environment.”(一家塑料制造公司的官员托马斯表示:“塑料行业正受到攻击,但我们希望继续生产塑料产品,如果公众认为回收是有效的,那么他们就不会那么担心环境了。”)”可知,制造塑料的公司鼓励人们回收塑料是为了获得更多的销售。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段““The public gradually doubt the idea that the plastics industry could do a satisfying job in dealing with plastics and protecting the environment. But now we have already funded new technologies to change this situation. We don’t want to see the pollution of the environment either and are willing to solve the problem,” says Jim Becker, vice president of Chevron Phillips Plastics Company.( 雪佛龙菲利普斯塑料公司副总裁Jim Becker说:“人们逐渐怀疑塑料行业在处理塑料和保护环境方面能做得令人满意。但是现在我们已经资助了新技术来改变这种情况。我们也不想看到环境污染,我们愿意解决这个问题”)”可推知,从Becker的话中我们可以了解到塑料工业开始承担更多的社会责任。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“However, the more plastics are recycled, the less money the industry will make. And the industry now produces many more different kinds of plastics that are more costly to sort and in many cases can’t be recycled at all. Efforts to reduce the use of plastics are increasing worldwide, but any plan to slow the growth of plastics will cause the whole industry to lose billions of dollars in the future.(然而,回收的塑料越多,这个行业赚的钱就越少。该行业现在生产了更多不同种类的塑料,分类成本更高,在很多情况下根本无法回收。全世界都在努力减少塑料的使用,但任何减缓塑料增长的计划都将导致整个行业在未来损失数十亿美元)”可知,最后一段的主要思想是塑料回收使塑料工业陷入困境。故选C。
D
Technology is starting to give us superpowers once reserved only for comic book heroes like Spider-Man and Superman. We now live in an age of human enhancement and related technology has captured the attention of the media and investors.
Some of these new technologies achieve their effects by means of electronic devices that connect our brains to external sources of knowledge, sensory data or physical power. We may not get chips implanted in our brains any time soon, but think about Google Glass--who needs an inserted chip when you can wear a computer on your head?
Wearable technology doesn’t only come in the form of a pair of glasses. A Japanese laboratory is working on a more practical prototype (雏形) of a muscle suit than lron Man’s shiny armor (盔甲). The muscle suit, called an exoskeleton, enables the sick and elderly to move around more easily, New Scientist magazine reported. Coveting (觊觎) the powers of Spider-Man, the US military is working on a “Spider-Man suit” that not only lets wearers climb vertical walls, but also allows them to sense approaching objects without looking at or hearing them, according to an American military technology website.
But perhaps you favor more subtle powers like mind control or mind reading. This may one day come true as well. The most amazing human enhancement technologies that have come into reality are devices that interact directly with the human brain.
Q Sensor, created by scientists at MIT, is a wireless sensor that measures electricity conducted through the skin. It can detect whether people are bored, stressed or excited, and therefore has wide applications in research and therapy, the BBC reported.
Scientists envision neural implants that could allow humans to manipulate real-world objects with their mind--a power not unlike mind control. Slate magazine reported this might already be happening.
12. What can be learned from the first two paragraphs?
A. New technologies have brought us into a new era.
B. Superpowers of comic book heroes have been widely applied nowadays.
C. Human enhancement refers to the superpowers of the comic book heroes.
D. Spider-Man and Superman have captured the attention of the media and investors.
13. What can we know about Google Glass?
A. It is implanted in our brains.
B. It is technology with inserted chips.
C. It is a device which makes us superheroes.
D. It is a technology that enhances human power.
14. Which of the following items does NOT involve wearable technology?
A. Google Glass. B. The muscle suit.
C. Iron Man’s armor. D. The Spider-Man suit.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Explore superpowers for human enhancement
B. Go beyond Iron Man’s shiny armor
C. Meet superheroes in real life
D. Embrace the unknown world
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. A

For years, we’ve lived in a world where pink is traditionally seen as a female color, while blue is for boys. We see this fact everywhere, from cards to children’s clothes. ____16____ Blue was then viewed as the female color. And pink was more popular with males.
To understand this, we have to go back to a time before colors were connected with gender (性别). At this point, light and soft colors started to be more commonly seen on children and connected with little ones. ____18____ But it wasn’t in the way we might expect. In fact, blue was usually worn by girls and pink was the preferred color for boys. It was thought that pink showed men’s qualities while blue show women’s.
____19____ Pink suddenly started being marketed and sold by fashion producers and stores as the perfect color for women, while blue was suddenly manly. Over time, the gap between these colors only increased and the pink/ blue divide started to spread to toys, babies’ beds, and more.
Nowadays, people better understand that pink isn’t just for women and that blue isn’t just for men. More work has been done to break down fixed ideas of gender-specific connections. ____20____

I was overjoyed. Final cuts (裁员) for the school basketball team were over and I was still around. I had a false sense of safety when I went to practice on Monday. When my teammates and I were doing our stretches (伸展运动) as usual, my coach asked me to one side and then told me the last thing I wanted to hear, “Steve, I’ve been thinking about it. There seemed not much progress in your skills, so I’m afraid we aren’t going to need you any more. You can finish out today’s practice if you want.”
The whole team had stopped practice and they were staring at me as if they could see through the seemingly brave boy whose heart was actually broken. “That’s okay. Coach,” I said and walked out of the gym into the locker room (更衣室).
Alone in the empty locker room, I stood and stared at my locker. Memories of the past training came flooding. How I wished I had worked harder!
Suddenly I realized my bag was still in the gym. I didn’t have the courage to go back, so I walked out to the track and up to the top of the bleachers (露天看台). There was an hour and a half left before practice was over. I sat up there and waited. When five o’clock came, I ran through the back door, took my bag and rushed out, just hoping to avoid any of my former teammates.
As worried as I was about avoiding my former teammates, I was afraid of having to face my father. . I got into the car and he asked, “How was practice?” I said, “Fine,” and kept silent the rest of the ride home.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Upon arrival, my father, who obviously noticed something unusual, started the talk.

The next year the basketball team wanted new players.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Upon arrival, my father, who obviously noticed something unusual, started the talk. “Is everything going on well, boy?” he asked. This simple question, after an hour and a half of sitting up there in the bleachers and thinking about what a loser I was, crushed my last insistence. “I was cut out of my basketball team,” I owned up to my failure, tears streaming down my face. My father gave me an encouraging pat on the shoulder with the words “Never mind” and suggested that if I practiced hard from now on, all my efforts would pay off one day. His words soaking into my heart, the next several months witnessed me sprinkling sweat on the basketball court.
The next year the basketball team wanted new players. I mustered up all my courage to sign up for the tryout after one year’s tireless practice. Back to the same gym, I took a deep breath and moved and jumped gracefully. Obviously it was a roaring success. The coach along with my former teammates was surprised to find what great progress I had made. What had been the location of my defeat became my symbol of success and deep down in my heart. I knew it could not have been achieved without my father’s encouragement, my hard work and most importantly my adoption of the “I’ll show you” mindset instead of a “poor me” attitude.

B. What the author wants is to help the young adults hide.
C

A Google Glass. B. The muscle suit.
C Iron Man’s armor. D. The Spider-Man suit.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Explore superpowers for human enhancement
B. Go beyond Iron Man’s shiny armor
C. Meet superheroes in real life
D. Embrace the unknown world
