The Best Movies of the Past Years
The Kid
It sometimes sccms there's an invisible force in the universe that we must all love Charlic
Chaplin. His character in the movie finds an abandoned baby on the street and takes him home.
These two are both a family and a team, held closc by genuine joy in one another's company. When
they're torn apart,it's heartbreaking;when they're reunited.it restores our faith in the order of the
universe.Like many of Chaplin's projects, the production of the film was full of humor.

There are few greater film-watching experiences than Bicycle Thieves. On Antonio's first day
of work, his bicycle is stolen, and he and his young son Bruno set out to get it back,a quest of
desperation and need that at first strengthens the father-son bond, before nearly tearing it apart.
What is even more impressive is that the director used no studio sets-all of the settings are

houses are set to be blown up by the Nazis().The story is told through the eyes of six-year-old
Cecilia, who sees the event as a great adventure. The movie is a mixture of comedy, fantasy and
sorrowful drama.
Let There Be Light

for themselves.

Jacob well, but they cared so much,"she said."Their parents must have taught them kindness."

A new report counects cating cggs to an incrcased risk of heart diseasc. The results follow
several earlier studies that found cating eggs was generally healthy. The study collects data from six
other earlier studics. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart disease when the number of eggs a
person ate each day increased by half an egg.
Norrina Allen,an associate professor at Northwestern University said that,in the United States,
eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol()in a person's daily food.People
with higher levels of cholesterol in their food are at increased risk of the development of heart
disease later in life.However.Allen added that she would not say that eggs are completcly
unhealthy."I'm not saying that pcople should take them completely out of their food,"she said.
"I'm just suggesting that people eat them in a proper amount."
Some experts believe the new study does not prove that eggs are causing heart disease.
"Cholesterol's role in the development of heart disease has been discussed for more than 30 years,
said Brucmmer.an associatc professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
"This study does have clear shortcomings.including self-reporting at a single time point,he
added.
Bruemmer said,"Eggs in moderation are probably acceptable from a nutritional standpoint."
"Moderation,"he added."is less than one egg a day, including eggs in foods such as bread."
Holly Andersen,a doctor at the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Comnell Medical Center.agrees
that the study has"real shortcomings".One problem Andersen has with the study is that a lot of the
egg-eating people in the study also appeared to be eating much meat and processed meat."If you're
taking a lot of processed meat,it doesn't matter how many eggs you're eating,"Andersen said.
Also,Andersen said,"The study can only show there is a relation between eggs eating and
heart disease. But it cannot prove eggs are the cause of the disease. It may just be that people eating
a lot of eggs are also taking a lot of bacon."
28.What does Norrina Allen agree with?
A.Eggs are completely unhealthy.
B.Eggs contain the most cholesterol.
C.Eggs should be eaten in a right amount.
D.Eggs have no connection with heart disease.
29.What is Bruemmer's attitude towards the study?
A.Interested.
B.Doubtful
C.Concerned.
D.Hopeful.
30.What can we learn from Holly Andersen's words?
A.Eggs and meat cannot be eaten together.
B.Processed meat may cause heart disease.
C.Processed meat should be avoided.
D.The study is supported by evidence.
31.What's the best title of the text?
A.Do eggs cause heart disease?
B.Are eggs the top source of cholesterol?
C.What's the proper amount of eggs eaten?
D.Is the cholesterol to blame for heart disease?

The e-commerce company that retailers()talk about most these days is neither Amazon,
the American giant, nor Alibaba,China's biggest. It is Pinduoduo(PDD),a Chinese firm that started
in 2015 as an online food supplier, but whose success has driven its market value above $200bn.
Last year it was China's fastest-growing Internet stock, rising by 330%.
PDD attracts attention for two reasons. One is its business model.David Liu,vice-president of
strategy, explains that it has drawn on the popularity of smart phone in China to create an
e-commerce experience in which people club togcther to buy products from robot
vacuum-cleaners to bananas.During the pandemic,this has expanded into a fast-growing business
across thousands of towns and villages,in which PDD's users gather to buy local farm produce at
low prices..Some call this“community group-buy”.Mr Liu calls it“interactive(互动的)commerce'”.
It is one of the hottest parts of the Chinese Internet.
The second is the way PDD has broken the record of giants of online shopping.Until a few
years ago,China's e-commerce market seemed a two-way competition between Alibaba and JD,a
competitor platform.No longer.Elinor Leung of CLSA,a brokerage(经s纪公司),expects PDD's
share of online retail in China to go beyond that of JD.She expects the number of users over
Alibaba. And although PDD put a huge amount of money to lower the prices of goods.ensuring the
customers from poorer parts of China easy access to its app,she thinks it may turn profitable this
year.
Remarkably, the key to its success focused on parts of the market they have been unable to
reach instead of defeating its bigger competitors.Although online sales of groceries have rocketed
during the pandemic, less than a tenth of the 8.1trn vuan($1.25tm)farm-produce market is bought
and sold digitally."We are continuing to grow the pie,"says Mr Liu.That lesson applies elsewhere
too. However,no matter how a future market looks, there is opportunity for new online businesses
because e-commerce is at an early stage of development.
32.What does the underlined part"club together"mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Share the expenses.
B.Have a club together.
C.Buy something in groups.
D.Interact with each other.
33.What mainly makes PDD go off with a bang?
A.Ensuring easy access to the app.
B.Exploring new markets.
C.Lowering the price of goods.
D.Competing with giants of online shopping.
34.Which of the following may Elinor Leung agree with?
A.E-commerce has yet to be developed fully.
B.PDD may end up making profits this year.
C.PDD is China's fastest-growing largest Internet business
D.PDD's share of online retail in China has gone beyond that of JD
35.What's Mr Liu's attitude towards the future of e-commerce?
A.Negative.
B.Casual..
C.Positive.
D.Objective.

I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn't like running.Throughout my childhood,
whenever we competed in the 50-meter run.the 400-meter,or any other type of race,I would
always end up with the last one among all the athletes. Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered
into my first official running race-a 3,000-meter challenge in my city-at age 38,I certainly didn't
expect to win or earn any prize.
I learned about the race from my friend Jim.He told me that the race was aimed at raising
money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their families to be
brave.Since it was a heartwarming program,I showed up,paid the entrance fee and moved over to
the starting line.Before long,someone spoke into a microphone."Anyone weighing over 200
pounds comes down to the scale(),please."Knowing I was over 200 pounds,I walked down to
the scale:A man told me to stand on it."Two hundred and three pounds,"he said. Then he wrote
down the race number and pinned(.....it on my back.Out of curiosity,I asked him why he
did so,and then I was told there would be an award ceremony()after the race. One award was
for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the
end of the ceremony.
Then started the race. Not realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds.I
gathered all my strength to run in my burning heat.Although other runners gradually passed me
along the way,I kept moving forward as fast as I could and struggled to make it to the finish line
Despite the tiredness,I was satisfied, for I could try my best to help those in need by running.
Shortly after the race, the award ceremony began and several awards were presented.
