As spring and summer come, outdoor activities have become very popular and biking has taken the lead as one of the favorite ways of getting relaxed. A “bicycle fever” is sweeping through China, with more people accepting this green way to relax.
In Chengdu, Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, the Tianfu Greenway, over 100 kilometers, has become the best place for bicycle lovers. Liao Hongying is one of them.
She is a bicycle rider in Chengdu. She said that she had to choose midnight to enjoy biking as she wanted to avoid the crowd on the greenway. “In the daytime, it is really crowded on the greenway as more and more people exercise there,” Liao said. To avoid the heavy traffic, many people choose night-time to ride, enjoying the peace of the greenway under the stars. “There’s a feeling of being free and peaceful when you ride at night. The world seems to slow down, and you feel connected with everything around you,” she added.
Liao also set her goal for a long journey—riding from central Chengdu to the suburb of Dujiangyan, a 140-kilometer ride. She believed that biking offered her a chance to improve her health as well as discover the country.
“Biking is not only a great way to exercise that makes me strong and full of energy far away from stress and worry, but also an opportunity to connect with nature and experience the beauty of China in a special way,” she said. “Each journey leaves me with memories that will last for a lifetime, especially my riding experience in Xi’an and Sichuan.”

The gaming technology is pushing cultural exchanges. A good example is a game programme called “Digital Library Cave”, which allows users to take an online tour of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Since November 9th, 2023, foreign users can experience the rise and fall of the Library Cave through games without going to the Mogao Caves.
By playing the virtual (虚拟的) role of a time traveller, users are entering a thousand years of history, from the time when the cave was built in the mid-4th century to when it was rediscovered.
Users will communicate with eight real historical people appearing as non-player characters. This makes users feel as if they were there. Within a week of the Digital Library Cave appearing online in April last year, 14 million users reportedly visited the game through the WeChat app, Cloud Museum of Dunhuang Caves.
The Digital Library Cave is of great value. A young historian from Mexico said the program was a great way to learn. She wanted to have such technology for museums to get to know what was inside the pyramids (金字塔) in her home country, including the Kukulcan Pyramid in the city of Chichen Itza, which is well-protected but not available.
As technology continues to develop, the increasingly improved audiovisual (视听的) experiences, more real storytelling experiences, and convenience across many devices (设备) are changing the way people sense the world.

Changing Books
Can you imagine a world without books? It may seem like we have always had books, but that is not true. A long time ago, before there were books, people used to write things on pieces of stone. Even before people wrote on stones, people would draw pictures on the walls of caves. In a way, these were the very first books. People wrote things down so that other people could read them later. Many years later, someone invented better ways of writing things down using shapes, lines, and circles. Then, people invented paper. Some people think that learning how to make paper and putting papers together to make books changed the world forever.
At first, books were very rare and only very rich people could own them. Books were so special that sometimes you could visit a village and not find one book in the whole village.
A few hundred years ago, books became cheaper and more common because of a special machine that made books quickly. Then, it was not only rich people who owned them. People started reading and learning about all kinds of different things. Books were not only used for learning. People also used them to tell stories about far away lands and exciting adventures. Before books, people came together in groups to listen to stories for fun. But with books, a person could sit at home and have fun reading exciting stories alone.
Many people thought when movies and radio were invented that nobody would read books anymore. But people still wanted to read books. Then when TV came along, people were sure that books were finished. But people still wanted to read books. Today we have computers. Some people say that computers will be the end of books for sure. But I don’t think so.
29. What can we know from the passage?
A. Books were once written on stone and cave walls.
B. People never told stories before books were made.
C. Books looked the same in old times as they do now.
D. Everyone has always been able to afford books easily.
30. Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A. Books will always remain popular.
B. Computers will be the end of books.
C. Nobody will read books after movies and radio.
D. People won’t want to read books because of TV.

Live a Healthy Life
In 2009, Huntington, West Virginia, was called the unhealthiest city in the United States. Jamie Oliver, a chef, wanted to help and started a food revolution. He was on a mission to change people’s eating habits, so he opened a new community food center there in 2009. He chose Huntington largely because of the city’s high rates of food-related illnesses.
At the time, over 45 percent of the adult population was overweight. Oliver’s team spent five months teaching people about fresh food at the food center called Jamie’s Kitchen where his team taught cooking lessons and served healthy meals. Three years after the Kitchen opened, the obesity level in Huntington had dropped by 10 percent.
In the past, dinners at home were often cooked with fresh ingredients (原料). However, over the past 50 years, convenience foods have replaced fresh home-cooked meals. These convenience foods are highly processed (经过加工的) and full of additives. While these additives increase the shelf life of foods, they can be harmful to our health. Processed foods are also common in schools. This means children are fed meals that are mass-produced using unhealthy ingredients.
Oliver has some ideas about how we can deal with these problems. For example, he encourages people to share simple recipes so that more people get into the habit of home cooking. He also suggests that supermarkets hire “food ambassadors (大使)” to help customers make better choices about the foods they buy. He has also worked with schools to develop healthier meals, and to help children learn about good nutrition.
Inspired by his experiences in Huntington, Oliver created an annual event called Food Revolution Day. Food Revolution Day events raise awareness of how food affects our well-being and remind people that cooking with fresh ingredients is fun. In 2014, groups in over 100 countries participated. Jamie Oliver hopes people will live healthier lives. He wants to create a movement to educate every child about food and to inspire families to cook again.
31. The word “obesity” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A. population B. education C. fatness D. fitness
32. What can we learn from the passage?
A. convenience foods are beneficial to our health.
B. Jamie Oliver is a man with great responsibility.
C. Food Revolution Day is the best time to dine outside.
D. Huntington was the healthiest city in the US in 2009.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To advise us to make good use of fresh ingredients.
B. To introduce the food revolution in Huntington.
C. To discuss the popularity of Jamie’s Kitchen.
D. To encourage people to cook on their own.

四、阅读表达(第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.
In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal clothes like tuxedos and evening gowns, and they may drink champagne at midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the new year with the first light of the sunrise.
It is also a common Western custom to make a New Year's promise, called a resolution. New Year's resolutions usually include promises to try something new or change a bad habit in the new year.
Many cultures also do special things to get rid of (摆脱) bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the new year can start afresh. Other common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things on the first day of the new year.
Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year's Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck at New Year. In the United States, some people eat black-eyed peas for good luck—but to get good luck for a whole year you have to eat 365 of them!

At the time over 45 percent of the adult population was overweight.
