话题:人类透支地球的资源
Human demands for natural resources
have doubled in less than 50 years and are
now beyond what Earth can provide,a report
warned. If humans carry on like this,we will
need two Earths by 2030.The population of
wildlife has fallen by 60%in thirty years.
The report said British people are consu-
ming(消耗)far more than Earth can deal
with.If everyone lived such a lifestyle,hu
mans would need 2.75 planets to survive.
People are now living lifestyles which would
require 1.5 planets, though there are great
differences between rich and poor nations.
Researchers studied the global change in
land use and water consumption. The UK
comes 31st in a list of countries based on "ec-
ological footprint(生态足迹)”that measures
how much land and sea each person needs to
produce the resources they consume and to
absorb(吸收)the wastes.The UK has fallen
down from 15th place in the last report two
years ago to 31st place, but the WWF believes
it is an increase in other countries'efforts
rather than a reduction in the UK's use of re-
sources.
Ireland has the 10th highest ecological
footprint,while the United Arab Emirates,
三0022
Qatar,Denmark,Belgium and the US are the
five worst countries for over-consumption of
resources. The study suggests if the expected
global population of 9.2 billion in 2050 were
to eat a Malaysian diet,1.3 planets would be
needed, but if everyone were to eat an Italian
diet, humans would need almost two planets.
Those countries that can provide the highest
quality of life using the lowest amount of re-
sources will not only serve the global inter-
est,but will be the leaders in a resource-limit-
ed world.
1.How many Earths do we need if we follow
the British lifestyle?
A.1.3.
B.2.75.
C.2.
D.1.5.
2.What do we know about "ecological foot-
print”?
A.It has something to do with human de-
mands for resources and their wastes.
B.It is used to produce the resources and
absorb the wastes.
C.We can know the total amount of re-
sources on Earth through it.
D.It is about changes in land use and water
consumption across the globe.
3.The WWF believes that
A.Earth won't be able to meet human
needs after 50 years
B.the UK has possibly not reduced the use
of resources over the past two years
C.Ireland has a lower ecological footprint
than the UK
D.there are no big differences in lifestyles
between rich and poor nations
4.What can we learn about Malaysia from the
text?
A.It has a larger population than Italy.
B.It consumes fewer resources than Italy.
C.It would need almost two planets.
D.It has the highest quality of life.

话题:海洋中的生物因水被污染而受到影响
All living things in the ocean are endan-
gered by human's polluting the water.1
One way is the dumping(倾倒)of certain
waste materials, such as garbage and used
water,into the ocean.The harmful bacteria
that feed on the garbage use up much of the
oxygen in the surrounding water,so other
creatures in the area often don't get enough.
Other substances(物质),such as radi-
oactive waste material, can also cause pollu-
tion.2 But after years of being exposed
to the ocean water, the containers may begin
to leak(漏).
3 Oil is spilled into the ocean when
oil ships sink or when oil wells in the ocean
cannot be capped. The oil covers the gills(of
fish and prevents them from breathing.Div-
ing birds get the oil on their wings and are un-
able to fly. When they clean themselves, they
are often poisoned by the oil.
Rivers also can contribute to the pollu-
tion of oceans.4 Fertilizers used on the
farmlands may be carried to the ocean, where
they cause a great increase in the amount of
certain plants.Too much of some plants can
actually be poisonous to fish.
Worse yet are the pesticides(杀虫剂)
carried to the ocean. These chemicals slowly
build up in fish and other small animals.5
The buildup of these chemicals in the animals
can make them ill or cause their babies to be
born dead or sick.
A.Fish and turtles suffer the most.
B.Pollution occurs in several ways.
C.Oil is another major source of concern.
D.Many rivers receive the runoff water from
farmlands.
E.Farmers use these artificial fertilizers to in-
crease crop harvest.
F.These materials are often placed in the wa-
ter in safely sealed containers.
G.These animals then pass the pesticides on
to the larger animals that feed on them.飞壁快乐假期
