Respected master of Chinese classical literature (文学), Florence Chia-ying Yeh, also known as Ye Jiaying, passed away at the age of 100. Yeh was famous for creating, researching and teaching Chinese poetry both in China and abroad.
Yeh was born in a family with a strong literary background in Beijing in 1924. So she started learning classical poetry at a young age. Later in college, she studied Tang and Song poetry under Gu Sui, a famous Chinese literature master who greatly influenced her understanding of poetry and life, as well as her teaching style. All these made it possible for Yeh to grow into a great poetry expert.
But life brought her many challenges. She lost her mother when she was only 17 years old, and her eldest daughter died when Yeh reached middle age. “The study of poetry is not a goal that I go for, but a power that supports me through difficulties,” she wrote.
In the 1950s and 1960s, she taught at universities in China’s Taiwan. In those days she was invited to lecture (讲座) in foreign universities including Harvard University and the University of British Columbia. Then she moved to Canada in 1969 and taught in the University of British Columbia. In 1979, she started giving free lectures in mainland China during her holidays. Throughout her life, she shared traditional poetry with others and connected different cultures.
Even in her 90s, Ye continued teaching. She picked 218 old poems for kids and made videos to explain and read them. Even at 96, she gave lectures at Nankai University, sitting in a wheelchair. People said she made it easy to understand poetry and guided students to learn step by step. “In my view, studying classical Chinese poetry helps people connect with deep feelings. At the same time, their creative thinking skills can be improved as well.” Ye once said.
Ye Jiaying’s life was focused on protecting and sharing the beauty of classical Chinese
poetry. Her work will continue to influence people for years to come.

Reading English books is a good way to improve English. Beginners may find the stories for kids are too childish. But if a novel is too difficult, you even want to give up before you finish it. How do you choose the book that’s right for you? Here are some tips that could help!
Interest is the best teacher! The first thing is to find something you’re interested in. You’ll be more likely to enjoy it, and it might help you overcome vocabulary challenges, too. For example, a fan of football can read books about football. There may be many words that are shared by both your first language and English.
If you’ve found a book but you’re not sure if it’s right for you, experts suggest doing the five-finger test. Begin reading the book, and every time you meet a word you don’t understand, raise a finger. If you raise four or five fingers on one page, perhaps the book is too challenging. But if you only raise less than one finger, or don’t raise any at all, maybe the book is too easy! This test is usually used to help parents choose good books for their children to read, but it can help language learners too!
In addition, experts also suggest choosing something that you know well. It could be a novel you’ve already read in your first language. You can also choose a book of a film that you’ve already seen. It’s easy for you to follow them because you know the story and the characters well. And, you will learn some new expressions before you even know it.
