In Baltimore, Our Kids Read, a nonprofit offers three free books to every child who walks into its bookstore. And unlike the library, the books are never expected back. Kids “check out” at the front of the store, but instead of handing over cash, all they have to do is sign up for the nonprofit's Reading Buddy program, which matches young readers with adults who read with them once or twice a week in 45-minute online meetings to promote literacy.“Every child should have someone reading to them at night,” said Jahmal Lake, executive director of Our Kids Read.
Lake established Our Kids Read in 2021.But he quickly realized that he needed to do more than just distribute donated books.“I think that the mistake a lot of nonprofits make, is that they think they can back up a truck full of resources to the communities they want to serve and that they're doing something,” Lake said.“But if that community is not equipped to make good use of those resources, you might as well have given them a brick.”
On the bookshelves and across tables, there are books like “Black Boy Joy” and “Eyes That Kiss in the Corners”, picture books in English and Spanish, poetry collections, and even graphic novels. The range of options plays into Lake's vision of turning non-readers into bookworms by directing kids to books on subjects they already love. Research shows kids are more likely to finish and love books they pick out themselves.
To promote the Reading Buddy program, Our Kids Read goes into elementary schools. Lake also plans to set up several little free libraries to encourage reading. The Baltimore Community Foundation has given Our Kids Read over $25,000.Vice President of Community Impact Crystal Harden-Lindsey said Our Kids Read is vital to promoting literacy, the foundation for academic success, economic mobility and civic engagement.

When Hayden Smith was growing up with his three siblings(兄弟姊妹) in a public housing, he dreamed of playing for Arsenal, the famous football club, and the family's small garden became his football field. He improved his skills dribbling between his mother's rosebushes and lavender plants, his shots kicking down her avocado tree. At 20, he was playing professionally in Austria.
Then, on a June evening in 2017, he got a text from his sister: a picture of Grenfell Tower, the housing project across the street from their home, consumed by flames. Seventy-two people would lose their lives in the tragedy, the country's worst residential fire since 1945.“All my friends were in Grenfell Tower and the surrounding area,” he says.“That was the moment I decided that I wasn't going to extend my contract and I needed to be at home.”
Back in North Kensington, he channeled grief into action. Inspired by childhood memories of his mother's garden, he discovered a wasted patch beneath the Westway elevated highway. Teaming with the locals, he transformed the trash-strewn space into the Grenfell Garden of Peace, planting geraniums, palms, and yams donated by nurseries. This humble plot became a lighthouse of recovering for a broken community. Soon, five additional ignored sites blossomed into vibrant public gardens, cementing Hayden Smith's role as an urban greening advocate.
In 2020, he co-founded Grow to Know, a nonprofit uniting gardeners like Danny Clarke to popularize green spaces. The organization tackles systemic inequities(不公平)by empowering sidelined groups to access and shape urban nature.“If people lack time or resources to garden,” Hayden Smith argues, “we're excluding entire communities.” His vision expanded beyond ecology to address social justice, combining environmentalism with cultural activism. At the 2022 Chelsea Flower Show, Grow to Know developed “Hands Off Mangrove”, a garden facility honoring a dead Caribbean restaurant central to 1970s anti-racism protests while highlighting global mangrove deforestation. In 2023, co-operations with famous brands repurposed 10,000 plants from a Tate Modern fashion show into a community garden, bridging high art and grassroots action.
There's a reason that working with plants is so rewarding, Hayden Smith thinks.“In the garden,” he says, “boundaries and barriers come down.”
1.Why did Hayden's sister text him?( )
A.To stop him signing a contract.
B.To express her affection for him.
C.To inform him of a tragic incident.
D.To send him a photo of their house.
2.What does the underlined word “cementing” in paragraph 3 best mean?( )
A.Overacting. B.Playing. C.Interpreting. D.Strengthening.
3.What is known about Hands Off Mangrove?( )
A.It cooperated with famous brands. B.It advocates environmentalism.
C.It is an anti-racism protest. D.It is a nonprofit organization.
4.Which words can best describe Hayden?( )
A.Cooperative and responsible. B.Curious and warm-hearted.
C.Independent and intelligent. D.Free-minded and patient.

There is considerable evidence from studies with adults that volunteering benefits a person's physical and mental health.1.___ A 2023 analysis suggested that young people who had participated in community service were more likely to be in excellent health and stayed calm when faced with challenges.
2.___ It could be that the children volunteers were already in great health. But because of an alarming rise in mental health issues among young people, environmental health scientists believe this early evidence is promising enough to pursue. A 2021 advisory warned that the number of young people reporting constant feelings of sadness or hopelessness had increased by 40 percent over the previous decade. There are multiple possible causes, including anxiety over climate change, the effects of social media use and unfriendly personal circumstances.
To address these problems, researchers point to the importance of “contribution” as an essential piece of social and emotional development for teenagers. Volunteering is one good way young people can contribute.3.___ In 2022, developmental psychologist Parissa Ballard and her colleagues tested volunteering as an intervention for nine 14-to-20-year-olds who had been recently diagnosed with mild to moderate depression or anxiety. After 30 hours of volunteer work at community organizations, the average reduction in depressive symptoms was 19 percent.
What accounts for the benefits? Helping others improves moods and raises confidence. It provides rich ground for building social connections. It also changes how young people see themselves. Many teens don't feel important.4.___
There may be a potential downside to volunteering, however.5.___ “Young people have to choose something that feels meaningful to them,” Ballard says. Adults can help by offering choices and checking volunteer opportunities to be sure that organizations are well run and equipped to offer a good experience.
A.Admittedly, this finding only shows connections.
B.Now scientists are finding similar links in children and teenagers.
C.This improvement was in comparison with young people who did not volunteer.
D.The sense of mattering to others translates really well to their needs to connect and belong.
E.Everyone in the study enjoyed the work and reported a sense of pride and accomplishment.
F.The experience can be harmful if young people feel like they are being forced to participate.
G.Volunteering gives them a different sense of themselves, a sense of confidence and self-value.
