The bamboo shoots are picked and quickly sent to factories. There, they are turned into soup. Speed is the key to keeping the bamboo shoots fresh. Later, the soup is sold in supermarkets. In recent years, the pre-made food industry (行业) in China has grown a lot. There are now more than 70,000 companies (公司) producing pre-made food. As people are looking for healthier and more convenient (方便的) food, pre-made food becomes a good choice.

① Sometimes a little self-criticism (自我批评) is not a bad thing. We can learn much from our mistakes. However, too much of it may result in health problems. When self-criticism becomes too much, it can turn into negative self-talk—that little voice in your head saying you’re not good enough.
② Dr Hugh, a scientist, said that some good students who study hard usually do not do well in a test because of negative self-talk.
③ Lindsay was one of Hugh’s best students. She came to class early, took part in discussion and did all her homework. However, she did poorly in exams. When Hugh asked her how she felt before a test, she told him she was very nervous. She was not sure if she knew the right answers. This is an example of negative self-talk. Dr Hugh turned Lindsay’s negative self-talk into positive questions. During a test, he told Lindsay to say to herself, “Why do I remember everything I study for an exam? ________?” Lindsay took his advice. Two weeks later, she took an exam in another class and scored 15 points higher than she had on an earlier exam. Four weeks later, she earned an “A” on the final exam in Hugh’s class.
④ Dr Hugh saw students work out fine with his method. And he did not just help his students. He also advised his friends and neighbours to let go of negative self-talk in their lives. He once said, “We can programme ourselves for success in class or in life, or we can programme ourselves for failure.”
⑤ Dr Hugh’s story shows us too much self-criticism harms performance, while positive self-talk turns things around. Positive self-talk has great power. Success starts in our minds.
41. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By listing numbers. B. By telling a story.
C. By asking a question. D. By making a comparison.
42. Paragraph 3 is mainly written to ________.
A. introduce Lindsay B. show Dr Hugh’s success
C. support Dr Hugh’s idea D. catch readers’ interest

C. What difficulties will I face D. When should I solve the problem

A. The machine runs fine.
B What a fine day it is today!
C. Don’t park here, or you will get a fine.
D. There is a fine line between right and wrong.
45. What’s the structure of the passage? (①= Paragraph 1; ②= Paragraph 2...)

A. By listing numbers. B. By telling a story.
