He didn’t tell Mr. Brown about his plan because they weren’t good friends. Mr. Brown was afraid the gate would be too big for the narrow lane.
They started to argue a lot. The small garden became like a wall between them. They couldn’t reach an agreement. Their family members also joined the argument. The situation seemed very bad.
One day, Mr. Brown’s son sent him an online message: “Living in peace with your neighbours is priceless. It cannot be bought with money. Good neighbours make a house feel more like a home. “After reading this, Mr. Brown understood something important. He decided to do something different. He went to Mr. Smith’s house and knocked on the door. He didn’t shout. He spoke kindly and respectfully and suggested a new plan: “We could share the cost and build a double gate that both families could use easily.”

How to Make a Great Self-Introduction
A good self-introduction helps people know you better and makes a nice first impression. Here are some tips to make yours great:
1. Keep it short and clear. Don’t talk for too long. A 1-2 minute introduction is enough. Focus on the most important things, like your name, hobbies, and one interesting fact about yourself.
2. Be honest and real: Don’t make up stories to impress others. Sharing small, true things (like “I love feeding stray cats after school”) makes you more friendly and relatable.
3. Smile and make eye contact: When you speak, smile at the people listening. Look at them instead of looking down—this shows you’re confident and polite.
4. Talk about your hobbies or dreams: Telling others what you like to do (e.g., “I play the guitar every weekend”) or what you want to be (e.g., “I hope to be a doctor one day”) helps them find common interests with you.
5. Ask a question at the end: This keeps the conversation going. For example, “I love reading science books. Do you have any favorite books?”
Remember, practice makes perfect. Try practising your introduction in front of a mirror or with a friend. Soon, you’ll be able to introduce yourself easily and confidently!
1. How long should a good self-introduction be?

Passage 7
Nowadays, social media has become an important part of people’s life. People of all ages use it as a way of communication. But how can we show good manners when we use social media?
Don’t say negative (消极的) things on social media.
Before you post anything online, take a few minutes to consider if it’s something you would say in person. If you say something negative online, you’ll pass your bad feelings to others.
Avoid posting other people’s pictures when they don’t know.
It seems interesting to post a funny picture of a friend online. But it would hurt their feelings if you post it without telling them. Talk to the person to make sure it’s okay with them. If they ask you not to post their pictures, then don’t do that.
Don’t share too much personal information online.
Over sharing can be sharing posts with personal information or just posting too many things in a day. Think about whether you want others to know about all that you’re sharing online. The most important thing is: never post ID card numbers, phone numbers or your home address online.
Don’t follow others to make any comments.
There are lots of things posted online every day, no matter whether they are good or bad. Sometimes it’s really difficult for us to find out what the truth is. If we follow others to write down our opinions to make comments, it may lead to the results that we are not able to pay for. So stay in silence and choose the right side.

Passage 8
Have you heard of (听说) dazi? Have you ever found a dazi? These days, finding a dazi is becoming popular with Chinese young people. A dazi is a person we eat with, study with, exercise with or take a trip with, but we haven’t known him or her before.
The dazi culture is about finding the right person to do the right activity with. Xiaoyue, a young woman from Ningxia, has met many dazi because of her love for basketball and biking. Having a dazi not only gives her company (陪伴) but also helps her enjoy sports more.
These dazi relationships are very different from close friendships. As for close friends, we need to stay in close contact. With a dazi, you don’t have to do so. Many dazi may not meet again after a trip or a game together. So, many people believe having a dazi makes their social life easier and more comfortable.
Finding a dazi shows that Chinese young people want clearer boundaries (界限) in their social relationships. Dazi will not talk or ask a lot about their personal lives. And they hope these relationships can let them share their hobbies and interests, or that they can help them to improve themselves.
Although finding a dazi has many good points, we should be careful and put our safety first.

Passage 9
We spend most of our time with friends we like. Well, what kind of people are welcomed by others, then? There are people that naturally attract (吸引) you. By being with them just once, you start to like them. If you wonder why they attract people and want to be a person like them, you should learn how to develop the traits (特点) that they have.
Firstly, everybody wants to be happy, and nobody wants to spend their time with an unhappy person. Well, you see, there is what you call mood linkage. If you are with a happy person, you are more likely to be happy, too. When people choose to spend time with a person, they are more likely to choose those who are cheerful. So if you are a happy person, many people will want to spend their time with you.
Next, everybody needs someone to give encouragement (鼓励) to them, because sometimes in our lives we meet failure, sadness, problems and other bad things. So if you always choose to cheer (振奋起来) others up with encouraging words or actions, they will be willing to (乐意) spend time with you.
Lastly, you are not a friend if you don’t give a hand to your friends when they need help. You should always be helpful to them, no matter what it costs, because when you need help, they will be there for you, too.
It feels good if people want to be your friends because of your character (个性). So if you want to attract people, you should learn to develop these traits.

Passage 10
Social media (社交媒体) has its good sides, but it can also bring some problems.
Have you ever been bored and decided to check your We Chat moments, only to find out that your best friend is at the Great Wall or one of your classmates is eating delicious noodles at your favorite restaurant, or one of your basketball teammates is visiting the giant pandas in Sichuan? Have you had the feeling that others are enjoying life more than you are? If your answers are both “Yes”, you are experiencing FOMO—the fear of missing out.
Researchers have found that over 75% of young people are experiencing FOMO from time to time. Social media is the main culprit for it. Because it is so easy today for people to see what their friends are doing, eating, buying and talking about. And they are afraid of missing out on important and new information when they are away from social networks. However, it is impossible for us to enjoy the same activities others are enjoying on social media. Failing to realize this truth, we often let FOMO lead us to compare our lives with those of others. This comparison leaves us feeling dissatisfied (不满的). However, our lives have both good and bad moments, but all we see on social media are the picture-perfect moments others share. FOMO also makes us check social media more often, which can cause feelings of sadness, loneliness and boredom.
So what should we do if we have FOMO? Researchers advised that we face it and change our way of thinking. They also explained that taking part in social activities could help us realize that nothing bad was happening. What’s more, they suggested finding the joy in the present and not believing the unreal information or news on the Internet. “Take it as a chance to do what you really love, and turn your FOMO into your JOMO— joy of missing out,” one researcher said.
1. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 2?
A.To show what FOMO is with examples.
B.To find out if people suffer from FOMO.
C.To ask questions about people’s daily lives.
D.To give examples about people’s using social media.
2. Which one can replace the word “culprit” in Paragraph 3?
A.purpose B.cause C.result D.problem
3. Why does social media make people feel dissatisfied according to paragraph 3?
A.Because our lives have both good and bad moments.
B.Because it leads us to compare our lives with those of others.
C.Because it is impossible for us to make friends by social media.
D.Because we can see the picture-prefect moments.
4. What are the right ways to deal with FOMO based on the last paragraph?
①Join a voluntary group.
②Accept what you are having now.
③Check your friends’ We Chat moments from time to time.

In the survey, 47.1% of people said their verbal skills (语言能力) were poor and 41.5% said it was difficult to talk with people at work. Chen Chen, a 28-year-old manager from Beijing, found that it was difficult to talk with people at work. “People don’t like to describe problems with exact words,” he said. “They often use vague words, such as ‘this isn’t right’ or ‘check it again’.”
“Fewer young people can show their ideas clearly,” said Guo Xiao’an. He is a Doctor of Language at Chongqing University. “Many young people’s vocabulary grows larger with the new words from the internet. They use these words more often in their daily life. As a result, they are not good at using traditional words.”
The survey also asked why their verbal skills were poor. 54% thought that’s because they read too little. More than half said they used internet memes (网络热梗) and stickers (表情包) too often. This made them have nothing more to say when they talked to people.

Passage 13
Earlier, only face-to-face communication was possible, but with the development of technology, we now have the phone, email, video calls and so on. It has become easier and much cheaper to communicate or have a conversation. We can easily communicate with our loved ones, whether they’re close or far away.
Face-to-face communication includes direct personal interaction (互动). Both parties can see each other’s body language and facial expressions, and understand them easily, leading to more effective communication. A study has shown that in our day-to-day life when we interact with someone face to face, we have a nonverbal (非言语的) communication of about 93%. In addition, face-to-face communication is more effective in building trust and making deeper connections.
But considering the long distance and time cost, face-to-face communication may not be the best choice. So there, telephone, email, etc. are preferred. Without telephone conversation, some work may be difficult to get done in time. The conversation changes depending on what relationship you have with the caller. For example, it will be informal (非正式的) if you talk to your close friends or relatives. But if you are having a professional telephone conversation, then it will be formal. You must have a lot of practice and confidence to interact with the caller.
Telephone conversations have no nonverbal cues (暗示), but they offer the convenience of communicating from a distance and at any time. Also, as they cannot see each other, both parties can speak without being under pressure (压力).

Passage 14
①Do animals communicate with each other? How do they communicate with others? I did some research, and to my surprise, I learnt that all animals communicate. They don’t use language, but they send messages to each other. Animals communicate with each other in three main ways: through sounds, smells, and body language.
②The alarm (警报) call is one way. When an enemy is near, animals send out a warning sound. Others hear it and run to a safe place, or get together to fight the enemy. Nowadays, social media has become an important part of people’s life. People of all ages use it as a way of communication. But how can we show good manners when we use social media?

So if you are a happy person, many people will want to spend their time with you.

④Develop your hobbies.
⑤Stop believing the news on the Internet.
A.③④⑤ B.②③⑤ C.①④⑤ D.①②④
5. What can be the best title of this passage?
A.Social media: Good or bad? B.FOMO: Friend or enemy?
C.FOMO: Get out of it! D.Social media: Guard against it!

And they are afraid of missing out on important and new information when they are away from social networks.”
根据“Failing to realize this truth, we often let FOMO lead us to compare our lives with those of others. This comparison leaves us feeling dissatisfied (不满的).”可知,因为它会让我们把自己的生活和别人的生活进行比较,故而导致不满。故选B。

5. 标题归纳题。根据“ ‘Take it as a chance to do what you really love, and turn your FOMO into your JOMO—joy of missing out,’ one researcher said”及全文可知,全文围绕 FOMO 的成因 (社交媒体引发比较)、危害 (不满情绪) 及解决方式 (积极应对) 展开,核心是如何摆脱 FOMO,故最佳标题为“错失恐惧症:摆脱它”。 故选C。
