Why? The Adulthood Ceremony in Ancient China In ancient China, the adulthood ceremony was the essential form to show a child has grown up. According to the Book of Rites (《礼记》), males received a capping ceremony at 20, while a female received the hair-pinning ceremony at 15. Both were hosted by the senior of the same family members according to the tradition. The capping ceremony for men meant doing the hair and wearing a cap. Usually it was held in a special place and the date was chosen by the capped person himself. At the end of the ceremony, the honoured guest would deliver a speech. The general idea of the speech would be as follows: from now on, you are going to wear adult clothes. You should behave like an adult, not a child anymore. We wish you a long life and a successful career. Then the capped person performed a ceremony bow (鞠躬) and got a new name. The hair-pinning ceremony for women referred to gathering women's hair into a knot (发制) with a hairpin to hold it. The procedures were almost the same as those of the capping ceremony, with slight differences. 示例：Getting a new name is meaningful.
