Five days before Christmas, when Cathryn took Waffle, a six-month-old dog, out for a walk in St Austell, something bad happened.
Cathryn said she was followed by a man holding a knife. The man was wearing a black jacket and scarf, and he spoke with a foreign accent (口音). So she sent her husband a message on the phone. Minutes later, when she looked up from her smartphone, Waffle was gone. So was the man.
Officer Steve White from Devon and Cornwall Police said, “All of the officers at the police station dealing with this crime also feel very sad for the family, especially during the Christmas holiday.”
Cathryn asked for help online but no good news came. What was worse, Cathryn received a message saying her dog would be killed unless she paid 1,000 pounds. Later, it turned out to be a swindle (诈骗).

My friend once explained the importance of believing good things will happen. That is, you need to imagine success strongly, and then you will succeed.
Believing in good things can help people face difficult challenges. Some people believe that success will come to them, and this gives them the courage to go ahead. They expect success, and they feel successful. This, I think, is close to the placebo (安慰剂) effect. If you add medicinal herbs (草药) to your diet to improve your energy level, you may feel that your energy level is improving, even if the herbs are just cabbage. In studies of new medicines, researchers often give some patients sugar pills (药丸) and say the pills are medicine. This helps them find out how well the medicine truly works.
Many people do similar things in their daily lives. College students often choose a special shirt or baseball cap to wear during exams. They feel it will bring them good luck. Here in China, one of the newest placebos is “Einstein’s brain”. People are told that if they buy one, they will develop a brain like the famous scientist. Do buyers really believe this? Not really. But by “having” a similar brain, they may feel relaxed and as a result, think more clearly during exams. But there is a condition—you must have studied enough first.
8. What may happen if people imagine success strongly?
A. They’ll have no challenges.
B. They will be successful.
C. Their energy level will improve.
9. To find out how well a new medicine works, researchers may give patients ________ as the medicine.
A. cabbages B. sugar pills C. a special shirt
10. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. A special shirt or baseball cap will bring people good luck.
B. The “Einstein’s brain” makes people relaxed and think more clearly.
C Buying an “Einstein’s brain” helps people develop a similar brain.
11 The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. tell us the importance of believing in good things
B. introduce some new studies on people
C. tell us the importance of achieving great success
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. A

根据全文内容,尤其是首段“My friend once explained the importance of believing good things will happen.”以及全文围绕心理暗示对人的影响展开论述,可知文章目的是告诉我们相信美好事物的重要性。故选A。

11. The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. tell us the importance of believing in good things
B. introduce some new studies on people
C. tell us the importance of achieving great success

The label (标签), “Made in China”, is becoming very common in shopping centers all over the world.
In the United States, at Wal-Mart, the largest supermarket there, there are many products mostly produced in China. People in America begin to buy more and more Chinese products because of the large number of Chinese imports (进口商品) in their countries. They are even widely popular in other Asian countries.
