As a child, gardening was something my grandpa and his father could do together. He explained, “Some kids like to play football with their dads, while I thought it was more valuable to garden.” He learned a lot about gardening from his father, including the best variety of tomato-the Porter tomato, which was the only kind my great-grandfather grew, and is now the only kind my grandpa grows.
Planting these tomatoes always reminds him of his dad and good memories in the garden together. In the garden that he has spent years perfecting, my grandpa grows his favorite vegetables both to consume and to share. Everything in the garden is grown organically. In his eyes, the value of gardening can be found in the physical exercise, the relaxation and the opportunity to share.
While my dad didn’t quite follow the tradition of enjoying gardening with his dad when he was a child, he rekindled the flame a little later in life. When my little sister Elizabeth and I were growing up, he realized that he wanted us to know where real food comes from and that growing it was something we were capable of doing. In addition to this important life lesson, my-dad explained, “There is something peaceful and relaxing about working in the dirt and caring for a plant. It is rewarding to grow something so healthy and wholesome.”
Gardening with my father is something that I enjoy doing. Although I am not always fond of the work and find it sad when plants die, I have fun when gardening and enjoy watching plants grow as the fruits of my labor. And as a mom and a role model for my kids, I plan to teach them this valuable tradition. It’s something everyone should know, and it brings a sense of joy.
4. Why does the author mention the Porter tomato in paragraph 1?
A. To publicize a tasty variety of tomato. B. To highlight the passing down of a tradition.
C. To show her grandpa’s talent for gardening. D. To present her family’s love for the vegetable
5. What does the underlined phrase “rekindled the flame” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Learned gardening from parents. B. Got back into gardening.
C. Created a new family tradition. D. Reviewed the gardening history.
6. What do the author’s grandpa and dad think about gardening in common?
A. It can make people relaxed. B. It can create precious memories
C. It can build up people’s bodies. D. It can develop gratitude for food.
7. What is the author going to do next?
A. Cultivate her kids’ habits of gardening. B. Try to stop plants in the garden from dying.

根据第一段“As a child, gardening was something my grandpa and his father could do together. He explained, “Some kids like to play football with their dads, while I thought it was more valuable to garden.” He learned a lot about gardening from his father, including the best variety of tomato-the Porter tomato, which was the only kind my great-grandfather grew, and is now the only kind my grandpa grows.(小时候,园艺是我爷爷和他父亲一起做的事情。他解释说:“有些孩子喜欢和爸爸一起踢足球,而我认为园艺更有价值。”他从父亲那里学到了很多园艺知识,包括最好的番茄品种——波特番茄,这是我曾祖父唯一种的番茄,现在也是我祖父唯一种的番茄)”可知,作者在第一段提到波特番茄是为了强调传统的传承。故选B项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据前文“While my dad didn’t quite follow the tradition of enjoying gardening with his dad when he was a child(虽然我父亲小时候并没有完全遵循和他父亲一起享受园艺的传统)”以及后文“When my little sister Elizabeth and I were growing up, he realized that he wanted us to know where real food comes from and that growing it was something we were capable of doing.(在我和妹妹伊丽莎白的成长过程中,他意识到他想让我们知道真正的食物来自哪里,而且我们有能力种植食物)”可知,作者的父亲年幼时不喜欢园艺,但是后来他意识到他想让“我们”知道真正的食物来自哪里,而且“我们”有能力种植食物,所以他又开始享受园艺,推知rekindled the flame应是“又开始做园艺了”之意,和B项意思相近。
根据第二段“In the garden that he has spent years perfecting, my grandpa grows his favorite vegetables both to consume and to share. Everything in the garden is grown organically. Cotton bags have become a means for brands, retailers and supermarkets to convey a planet-friendly mindset — or, at least, to show that the companies are aware of the overuse of plastic in packaging.
Earth-friendly? Not exactly. It turns out the wholehearted embrace of cotton bags may actually have created a new problem. An organic cotton bag needs to be used 20,000 times to make up for its overall impact of production, according to a 2018 study by the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark. That is equal to daily use for 54 years — for just one bag. The production of cotton bags is water-intensive, and figuring out how to deal with a bag in an environmentally low-impact way is not nearly as simple as people think, according to Travis Wagner, an environmental science professor at the University of Maine.
In sharp comparison with the frequent use of cotton bags, the disposal (处理) of the bags remains less satisfying. Only 15 percent of the 30 million tons of cotton bags produced every year actually is sent to be recycled. Even when a bag does make it to a treatment facility, most dyes (染料) used to print logos onto them are PVC-based and thus not recyclable; “they’re extremely difficult to disintegrate (分解) chemically,” said Christopher Stanev, the co-founder of Evrnu, a Seattle-based textile recycling firm. Printed patterns have to be cut out of the cloth; Mr. Stanev estimates 10 to 15 percent of the cotton Evrnu receives is wasted this way.
That’s not to say cotton is worse than plastic, or that the two should even be compared. While cotton can use pesticides and has dried up rivers from water consumption, lightweight plastic bags use greenhouse gas-emitting fossil fuels and will fill up the oceans.
Buffy Reid, of the knitwear label & Daughter, stopped production of her cotton bags in April this year. Aesop is converting the composition of its shopping bags to a 60 — 40 blend of recycled and organic cotton. Designer Ally Capellino recently employed a new material, while Hindmarch introduced a new version of her original cotton bag, this time made from recycled water bottles.
In the end, the simplest solution may be the most obvious. “Not every product needs a bag,” Comey says.
8. According to paragraph 2, what can we learn about cotton bags?
A. It is easy to recycle cotton bags.
B. Using cotton bags is earth-friendly.
C. Producing cotton is water-consuming.
D. Producing cotton bags poses no harm to the earth.
9. What do we know about the disposal of cotton bags?
A. A large amount of water is wasted.
B. Printed patterns on cotton bags cannot be recycled.
C. Dyes used to print logos are easy to break down.
D. Most cotton bags end up being recycled.
10. What is the author’s opinion of comparing cotton with plastic?
A. Cotton is worse than plastic.
B. Plastic is worse than cotton.
C. Both are favorable to the earth.
D. Both have disadvantages.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Cotton bags — a new fashion
B. Not every product needs a bag
C. Cotton bags — a way to be earth-friendly
D. Are cotton bags harmless to the environment?
C 9. B 10. D 11. D

根据第二段的最后一句“The production of cotton bags is water-intensive, and figuring out how to deal with a bag in an environmentally low-impact way is not nearly as simple as people think, according to Travis Wagner, an environmental science professor at the University of Maine.(缅因大学环境科学系教授Travis Wagner指出,棉布的生产需要耗费大量水资源,用尽可能环保的方式处理废弃棉布袋也远远没有人们想的那么简单。)”
根据第三段中“Even when a bag does make it to a treatment facility, most dyes (染料) used to print logos onto them are PVC-based and thus not recyclable; ‘they’re extremely difficult to disintegrate (分解) chemically,’ said Christopher Stanev, the co-founder of Evrnu, a Seattle-based textile recycling firm.(即使一个棉布袋确实到达了处理厂,多数用于印刷标识的染料都是聚氯乙烯材质的,无法被回收利用;总部位于西雅图的纺织品回收公司Evrnu的联合创始人Christopher Stanev说:‘它们在化学上极难分解。’)”
根据文章第四段“That’s not to say cotton is worse than plastic, or that the two should even be compared. While cotton can use pesticides and has dried up rivers from water consumption, lightweight plastic bags use greenhouse gas-emitting fossil fuels and will fill up the oceans.(这并不是说棉花比塑料更糟糕,或者两者甚至应该进行比较。尽管生产棉花会使用杀虫剂,还会耗费大量的水导致河流干涸,但轻质塑料袋使用排放温室气体的化石燃料,还会填满海洋。)”可知,作者认为不该将棉花和塑料放一起比较,两者都有自己的缺点。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Cotton bags have become a means for brands, retailers and supermarkets to convey a planet-friendly mindset — or, at least, to show that the companies are aware of the overuse of plastic in packaging.(棉布袋已经成为品牌、零售商和超市传达环保理念的一种手段,或者至少表明这些公司意识到了塑料包装的过度使用。)” Not exactly. It turns out the wholehearted embrace of cotton bags may actually have created a new problem. (很环保?未必。事实证明,棉布袋潮流可能引发了新的问题。)”以及下文对棉布袋是否环保的详细阐述可知,本文主要讲述的是棉布袋是否真的更加环保,由此可知,D选项“Are cotton bags harmless to the environment?(棉袋对环境无害吗?)”可以概括全文,适合作为最佳标题。故选D。
D
Three minutes of looking at red light once a week may help our eyesight, new research suggests. The findings show that red light might be a cheap and easy treatment for declines in color vision as we get older.
Last year, researchers from University College London did a study on red light therapy (疗法). 24 healthy volunteers, aged between 28 and 72, were asked to look at red light for three minutes every day for two weeks. Tests later found that the eyesight of people over the age of 40 improved.
To test the possible weak points of their therapy, they did a new study this year. Instead of using the light every day, they used it once a week. The new study included 20 volunteers, aged between 34 and 70, all with healthy vision. Some received red light therapy in the morning, and others received it in the afternoon. They were then tested on their color vision up to a week later.
On the whole, those who got the treatment in the morning showed a 17% improvement in their color vision, even a week later. Those who got the treatment in the afternoon did not have any improvement.
“We’ve found that one single exposure (暴露) to red light in the morning can greatly improve declining vision” said lead author Glen Jeffrey.
The findings do support their earlier work, and they might make the treatment more practicable, since a once-weekly treatment is easier to stick to than a daily one. But the team’s promising results are still drawn on small numbers of healthy volunteers. Larger studies would be needed to show the benefits of red light therapy.
“In the near future, a once-a-week three-minute exposure to deep red light could be done while making a coffee or listening to a song, and such a simple thing could change eye care and vision around the world,” Jeffrey said.
Given its low cost (as little as $15) per device, and simplicity, the team is excited about the future of their therapy.
12. What plays a key role in red light therapy?
A. The time of day for treatment.
B. The device used in the treatment.
C. The time that one treatment lasts.
D The number of treatments received.
13. What makes it necessary to improve the study?
A. The age of the volunteers.
B. The number of the volunteers.
C. The poor vision of the volunteers.
D. The health condition of the volunteers.
14. What is Jeffrey’s attitude towards the future of the therapy?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Tolerant. D. Hopeful.
15. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To state the importance of eye care.
B. To explain the value of deep red light.
C. To introduce a way to fight vision decline.
D. To encourage aged people to protect their eyesight.
A 13. B 14. D 15. C

根据第三段“The new study included 20 volunteers, aged between 34 and 70, all with healthy vision. Some received red light therapy in the morning, and others received it in the afternoon. They were then tested on their color vision up to a week later.(这项新研究包括20名年龄在34岁到70岁之间的志愿者,他们都有健康的视力。一些人在早上接受红光治疗,另一些人在下午接受。然后在一周后测试他们的色觉)”以及第四段“On the whole, those who got the treatment in the morning showed a 17% improvement in their color vision, even a week later. Those who got the treatment in the afternoon did not have any improvement.(总的来说,那些在早上接受治疗的人,即使在一周后,他们的色觉也提高了17%。那些在下午接受治疗的人没有任何改善)”可知,研究表明在上午接受红光治疗的志愿者一周后色觉有明显改善,而在下午接受治疗的则没有任何改善。所以在红光疗法中起着关键作用是一天中治疗的时间段。故选A。
根据第六段“But the team’s promising results are still drawn on small numbers of healthy volunteers. Larger studies would be needed to show the benefits of red light therapy.(但该团队的研究结果仍依赖于小部分健康志愿者。需要更大规模的研究来证明红光疗法的好处)”可知,还需要更多的志愿者来证明红光疗法的好处。故选B。
14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段““In the near future, a once-a-week three-minute exposure to deep red light could be done while making a coffee or listening to a song, and such a simple thing could change eye care and vision around the world,” Jeffrey said.(Jeffrey说道:“在不久的将来,每周一次三分钟的深红光治疗可以在煮咖啡或听歌曲时完成,这样简单的事情可以改变全世界的眼睛保健和视力。”)”
根据第一段“The findings show that red light might be a cheap and easy treatment for declines in color vision as we get older.(研究结果表明,随着年龄的增长,红光可能是一种廉价而简单的治疗色觉下降的方法。)”

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse sill, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened?”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly, an idea lashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that’s the point! Maria and Peter decided to take advantage of the Internet. “Maybe we can write an article to arouse people's awareness.” Maria proposed. “Good idea! We can also make a video!" Peter added. The next few hours witnessed their heated discussion and growing confidence in a clean and beautiful coast. The next day, they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing plastic bags lying on the beach and floating in the sea. Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the present situation of the beach and asking people to take part in the clean-up.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on WeChat. To their amazement, their post went viral online immediately. Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that numerous people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to join in their clean-up.

“We’ve found that one single exposure (暴露) to red light in the morning can greatly improve declining vision,” said lead author Glen Jeffrey.
D. The number of treatments received.

We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.
