One winter morning, Tapiwa Chiwewe was driving to work in Johannesburg, South Africa. He noticed a haze (薄雾) hanging over the city and it didn’t take long for him to realize that it was the pollution we suffered from.
At that moment, Chiwewe felt an urge (强烈的欲望) to do something about it, but didn’t know what. He was a computer engineer and knew little about environmental science.
He first did research on air pollution and found that it was the world’s biggest environmental health risk. He decided to work on it in a cooperative (合作的) way. He talked to scientists, officials, and engineers who helped him develop a deeper understanding of the situation, as well as an idea to improve it.
Through years of work, Chiwewe and his coworkers from South Africa and China created an online air quality decision support system (系统). Based on historical and real-time data, the system can correctly predict (预测) air pollution and air quality, which can help people make better decisions about their daily movements, as well as help officials better manage their operations.
Chiwewe learned an important lesson—“a lesson we all need to take into heart if we are to work towards a better future. Even if you’re not an expert in a particular field, your outside expertise may hold the key to solving problems within that field,” he said.
What if Chiwewe hadn’t worried to research the problem and do something about it? What if he had just hoped that someone, somewhere was taking care of the matter? As Chiwewe said, “Why not just go ahead and deal with the problem as well as you can, in your own way? You may be pleasantly surprised.”
19. Tapiwa Chiwewe worked in ________.
A. China B. America C. South Africa D. Japan
20. Chiwewe found that ________ was the world’s biggest environmental health risk.
A. water pollution B. land pollution C. air pollution D. light pollution
21. What does the underlined word “expertise” in Paragraph 5 mean in Chinese?
A. 传统观念 B. 专业知识 C. 业务能力 D. 感性认识
22. What can we know from the passage?
A Chiwewe is a person with a sense of social responsibility.
B. Chiwewe knew more about environmental science.
C. Chiwewe worked on the pollution by himself.
D. The system can reduce the pollution.

Is the world too crowded? Well, that is a hard question to answer. In Montana, America, you might drive for a mile and not see anyone. In Tokyo, Japan, over 10,000 people live in every square mile!
The population is one of the most important things in the world today. In fact, the world’s population doesn’t stay the same. As we all know, China held the title (头衔) for having the largest population in the world—over 1.4 billion. But India overtook China and became the country with the largest population last year. By the end of 2030, its population will be over 1.5 billion.
Five hundred years ago, the population of the world was about 425 million. There are about 8 billion people in the world now. By 2050, the world’s population will be more than 9 billion. If the world’s population keeps growing, by 2080 there will be over 10 billion people on the earth. Wow! That’s a lot of people!
Some people worry about that! The large population is a big problem because it will cause lots of problems in the future. More people will need more food and more space. The more people there are, the more resources (资源) the world needs, and the more we need to think carefully about how we live and use the earth’s resources.
With the increasing population, we must take action to protect the earth. Simple habits like reducing waste, saving energy, and planting trees can help. Education is also the key to helping people understand the importance of sustainable (可持续的) living. If we all work together, we can keep the earth clean and safe for our children and grandchildren.
23. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The problems caused by the large population.
B. Advantages of a large population.
C. The growth of the world’s population.
D. Ways of controlling the growth of the world’s population.
24. What should we do with the population growth according to the writer?
A. We should build more cities and houses.
B. We should think carefully about the way we live.
C. We should use technology to produce more food.
D. We should move to places with a smaller population.
25. What can we know from the passage?
A. A large population can be a good thing.
B. The world will need more and more resources.
C. The world’s population growth is getting slower.
D. The world can feed no more than 8 billion people.
26. Why did the writer write the passage?
A. To compare the population of China and India.
B. To discuss the world’s population and its results.
C. To explain why there are so many people in the world.
D. To show how to protect the environment.
(D)
Each of us has dreams and goals for our future. What makes us study and make progress each day is closely connected with our personal dream and goal.
But why do you have dreams and goals, you still end up with nothing? What separates successful people from the dreamers is their persistent (锲而不舍的) action. When you learn your lessons in school, you must work hard and not give up. You will often find some of your lessons very hard. Try and keep trying, and you’ll be sure to successfully deal with any difficulty you meet with. If we have a hard lesson today, let us try our best to learn it well and then we shall be prepared for a harder one tomorrow.
This is the famous formula (公式) for success:
Dream > Believe > Achieve
Most people have what they want (Dream) and think they can realize their dreams (Believe). And then they do nothing. They just imagine their dreams can come true. When they get tired of waiting and lose a lot, they get bored. They say angrily how terrible their life is.
I personally believe that if you really want to achieve your dreams and goals in life, you have to add one thing to your success formula:
Dream > Believe > Act > Achieve
For me, act is the most important thing for success and that’s to Take Persistent Action (Act). If you say, “I can’t do it” and give up, you can never do anything valuable. However, “I’ll try” creates wonders. Let’s remember that there will be obstacles (障碍) in our life. We must face them bravely and solve them. Success is not something that falls down from the sky. Most successful people made their dreams come true because of their persistent action.
Please remember: Action is the bridge that connects our dreams and goals to reality.
27. What should you do when you find your lessons very hard according to the passage?
A Ask people for help. B. Try and keep trying.
C. Get ready to create wonders. D. Prepare for a harder one.
28. Which of the following does the writer add to the famous formula for success?
A. Act. B. Achieve. C. Connect. D. Create.
29. Why does the writer use the formula “Dream > Believe > Act > Achieve”?
A To support his idea. B. To ask readers to explain it.
C. To show what his goals are. D. To compare it with a bridge.
30. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Doing Something Valuable B. Studying Hard and Making Progress
C. Realizing Dreams with Persistent Action D. Separating Successful People from Dreamers

C The world’s population growth is getting slower.
D. The world can feed no more than 8 billion people.
26. Why did the writer write the passage?

A. Ask people for help.
A. To support his idea. B. To ask readers to explain it.
C. To show what his goals are. D. To compare it with a bridge.
30. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Doing Something Valuable B. Studying Hard and Making Progress
C. Realizing Dreams with Persistent Action D. Separating Successful People from Dreamers
