Possible version 1:
Dear Peter,
Thanks for your e-mail. I’m very happy to tell you something about my holiday.
On May 1st, I had a great time visiting the science museum with my classmates. There was an interesting exhibition about space. We learned how astronauts live and work there. There was also a room full of robots. They could move and dance. How amazing! After that, we played a game. The workers gave us a map, we had to find out all the things on the map. It was difficult, but we worked together to find out all the things.
One thing I learnt that day: Team spirit is very important. It was really a fun day!
Yours,
Li Ming
Possible version 2:
Dear Peter,
Thanks for your e-mail. I’m very happy to tell you something about my holiday.
On May 1st, I visited my uncle with my parents. He lives in the countryside and he has a big farm. We went there by car. In the morning, we explored the farm. We saw different kinds of fruits and vegetables. We also fed the chickens. It was great fun. In the afternoon, my uncle told us how to plant vegetables. It seemed easy, but it took us a long time to get it right. We were tired but happy.
One thing I learnt that day: Farming isn’t easy. It was really a day to remember!
Yours,
Li Ming

B
When I think of the summer I was sixteen, many things came into my mind. We had moved just the year before, and sixteen is a time when having friends makes a big difference. I made some friends, but they weren’t sure of me yet. I didn’t know why. Maybe because I’d lived in town, and my father still worked there instead of farming, like the other fathers did. The boys I knew, even Freddy Gray and J.D., still kept a small distance between us.
We had one thing in common—that we were all afraid of Mr. Wills. Mr. Wills was a big man who had fierce (凶狠的) eyes. When he looked down at you, you just felt smaller. The idea of facing his direct and immediate anger was enough to worry every one of us.
Mr. Wills was the best farmer in the village. My father said he could drive a stick to the ground and grow a tree out of it. Above all, watermelons are what he grows best. Actually, watermelons are strange things. Some men can send for the best watermelon seeds, plant them in the best ground they own, look after them with the greatest care, and they still grow a melon no bigger than their two fists (拳头). But Mr. Wills can throw seeds on the ground, kick dirt over them, leave them be and have a crop of the prettiest, biggest melons one ever saw.
Mr. Wills always planted the little field directly behind his barn (谷仓) with watermelons. It ran from the barn to the creek (小溪), a good piece of land with just the right sandy soil for melon growing. And it seemed as though the melons eagerly (热切地) rose out of the ground for him.
But they were Mr. Wills’ melons. He didn’t have any idea of sharing them with others. He watched over his watermelons more closely than anybody else. If we boys happened to walk close to his melon patch (瓜地), Mr. Wills would be there, watching us fiercely. He would often have his gun under his arm, too.
That summer Mr. Wills grew the greatest watermelon ever seen in the country. It grew in the very middle of his patch, three times as big as any melon anybody had ever seen. Men came from miles around to look at it. Mr. Wills wouldn’t let them go into the patch. They had to stand around the edge.
19.What is TRUE about me and my friends at sixteen?
A.My friends often argued with me over farming skills.
B.We were very close and trusted each other completely.
C.We had a lot in common and were equally afraid of Mr. Wills.
D.My friends were unsure of me because of my different background.
20.Which is NOT mentioned as a reason why Mr. Wills grew the best watermelon?
A.His use of the best seeds. B.His good field with proper soil.
C.His great talent for farming. D.His careful watch over the patch.
21.What do I think of Mr. Wills?
A.Annoying and impatient. B.Smart and sincere.
C.Scary but amazing. D.Unkind but modest.
22.Which is the best title of the passage?
A.The Secret of Growing Watermelons. B.A Lonely Boy’s Search for Friendship.
C.A Summer of an Adventure in the Village. D.Mr. Wills and His Incredible Watermelons.
C
A new and unusual way to relax has become popular in many Chinese cities. That is hugging trees. Young people take comfort from it. On weekends in parks, you might see people standing quietly with their arms around big trees, even talking to them softly.
Hundreds of people online share their tree-hugging experiences which make themselves less-stressed (紧张的) and worried. “After hugging an old pine tree for 10 minutes, my tiredness-disappeared,” wrote a college student on social media. In their opinion, it is a way of keeping a close relationship with the natural world. By hugging a tree, some of them feel that the tree is hugging them back. “The rough bark (树皮) feels like warm hands holding me,” said another young man.
One woman gave up her job because of too much work pressure (压力). According to her, hugging trees helps her a lot. She totally enjoys herself in hugging trees. Every morning, she visits a ginkgo tree (银杏树) near her home. “Hugging trees helps me calm down and lets me return to a natural state (状态). I feel so free and feel the world is so big: I have also become braver than before,” she said. Now she teaches others how to choose good trees for hugging.
Hugging trees is actually a kind of psychological therapy which first came from northern Europe. In those cold countries, people believe trees have healing power (治愈力量). A study has also shown that hugging can lead people to give off oxytocin (催产素). Oxytocin is able to create feelings of love and make people less stressed. Doctors say just 5 minutes of tree-hugging can make your heart beat slower.
While tree-hugging has been shown to be helpful for people’s body and mind, there are many points we should pay attention to before we do that.
23.What is the main purpose of this passage?
A.To explain why trees are important.

D.To encourage people to exercise more outdoors.
24.How did the writer explain the benefits of tree-hugging in paragraph 3?
A.By comparing different ideas.
B.By using a personal story.
C.By asking questions.
D.By drawing pictures.
25.What does the word “therapy” mean in paragraph 4?
A.A way of treatment.
B.A kind of sport.
C.A special game.
D.A type of food.
26.Who in the following would most probably hug trees according to the passage?
A.A woman who usually feels relaxed.
B.A man who wants to relax his mind and body.
C.A teenager who has a strong and healthy body.
D.A kid who depends on his or her parents greatly.

Does happiness matter? People have different opinions. Some think there are more important things to worry about, while others believe happiness is what everyone wants in life. To understand this, we first need to understand what happiness really means.
Happiness is about our feelings, but it’s more than just a short moment of smiles or laughter. Instead, happiness is how we feel about our lives overall. Every day, we feel many different emotions. For example, feelings like fear and anger help protect us from danger, while happy feelings like joy and hope help us make friends and solve problems. Being happy doesn’t mean we should never feel sad or angry. Everyone has difficult times, and it’s normal (正常的) to have these feelings. True happiness means enjoying good times while also learning to deal with hard times.
Research shows happiness plays an important role in success. Some might think happy people are less hardworking, but research shows the opposite is true. They actually perform (表现) better in their jobs, maintain better health, and build stronger relationships. In one study at Warwick University, scientists put participants (参与者) into two groups. The first group watched a happy, funny video while the second group watched a normal video. After watching, both groups did the same office task. The results showed that the first group did their tasks 11% better than the second one.
Other researchers have found similar results. For example, business researchers studied companies for many years and found that companies with happier workers always did better in the market. Also, when scientists followed young people for many years, they saw that those who were happier in childhood usually were more successful when they grew up than those who were less happy. One of the reasons is that happiness can wake up the control center in children’s brains, to help weigh options more clearly, like choosing “study first, play later” instead of wasting time. In other words, happiness may lead to success, not just come from it.
Of course, happiness doesn’t solve all problems. Happy people still have difficulties, and not all happy people are successful. But happiness does make life better in many ways. In the end, happiness is more than just a feeling. It helps us succeed, makes society stronger, and gives life its real meaning.
27.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.Happiness is not only a moment of joy. B.What the true meaning of happiness is.
C.It is natural to have different feelings. D.Happiness is about people’s feelings.
28.What does the expression “the opposite is true” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Happiness is good for relationships. B.Hard work makes people successful.
C.Happy people could do better work. D.Success leads to better health.
29.Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A.Happy workers did 11% more work than less happy ones.
B.A happy childhood can ensure a happier life in adulthood.
C.Happiness makes people overcome the bad feelings.
D.Happiness can help people make better decisions.
30.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To discuss different people’s ideas about happiness.
B.To compare happy people with others in research.
C.To tell us that success is the key to happiness.
D.To show that happiness is important for success.

How to Make a Good Study Plan
Do you always feel there is too much homework and too little time? A good study plan can help you manage (管理) your time, reduce stress, and improve your grades. 31
First, you need to know what you must do. 32 List all your subjects and the tasks for each, like homework, reviewing, and preparing for tests. Don’t forget to include your regular activities, such as sports or music classes.
After listing everything, it’s time to prioritize (划分优先顺序). 33 You can use labels like “very important”, “important”, and “not urgent” to decide which tasks to do first. This helps you focus on what really matters.
34 Your plan should work for you, not against you. If you find you are more focused in the morning, plan your most difficult subjects for that time. If you are a night person, do the easy review work in the evening.
Finally, remember that a plan can change. If you have a sudden school event, you can adjust your plan. The most important thing is to get started. A good plan is your first step towards success.
A.This means deciding which tasks are the most important.
B.It is not a good idea to study for a long time without rest.
C.Start by writing down all your schoolwork and activities.
D.Everyone has their own most productive (高产的) time of the day.

B.To introduce a new way of relaxing.
C.To teach people how to protect trees.

Hi, I’m Tom. I am going to talk about my family rules. The main rule I have to follow is to study hard at school. My parents want me to do my homework carefully and tell them about everything important that happens at school. I must go home after school at once. I have to go to bed by ten p.m. on school nights but during the holidays I can stay up late. Another rule is that I have to clean my room. My parents will get angry if I leave things around the house. I should keep my room tidy although I often break this rule. I think many children at my age like to have their rooms as their places. I want to keep it the way I like — a bit untidy. I often have pictures on the wall. But my parents don’t like them.

Yours,
Li Ming
