Critical thinking is key for solving crimes. It helps detectives (侦探) use what they know and learn to decide what to believe and do—like a “superpower” for solving crimes. Here’s how it works.
But how can detectives tell if someone is lying? Here are some simple ways.
First, pay attention to whether the suspect’s (嫌疑人) story stays the same. A criminal might change their story because they are making it up.
Second, find out how many details they give. Innocent (无辜的) people usually can remember lots of small things because they really experienced it. But a criminal may only give a very simple answer. They don’t have real memories to share.
Finally, watch their feelings. An innocent person may be a bit angry or sad because they are wrongly suspected. But a criminal might seem too calm or too nervous. They are worried about being found out.
Let’s practice!
On a rainy afternoon, a rich man called William West was killed at home. There were three people at his home when he was killed. Detective Brown believed one of them had killed William. He questioned the three people one by one.
Sally (William’s wife) : “I read newspapers in the living room with glasses—though I have eye problems. William said he’d take a shower, and then I asked the cook for coffee.”
Amelia (cook) : “I rested in the kitchen. I made coffee for Sally at 13:30, then went back. I saw John by the bathroom—he looked nervous.”
John (gardener) : “I was in the garden. I never went into the house or saw William.”
48. Why is critical thinking a “superpower” for detectives to solve crimes?
A. Because it helps them remember all the small details quickly.
B. Because it helps them use facts to judge what to think and do.
C. Because it helps them catch criminals without checking clues.
D. Because it helps them become superheroes in people’s hearts.
49. What’s the relationship of Step One and Step Two?
A. Step One has nothing to do with Step Two at all. B. Step One uses Step Two’s guesses to choose facts.
C. Step Two uses Step One’s facts to connect clues. D. Step Two is much more important than Step One.
50. Which sign may show suspects are lying?
A. They speak slowly when answering. B. Their story changes each time they talk.
C. They describe small event details. D. They feel angry about being questioned.
51. Who is most likely the killer with critical thinking?
A. Amelia—She rested in the kitchen and didn’t help William at that time.
B. Sally—She has eye problems and couldn’t read newspapers in the rain.
C. John—His story doesn’t match Amelia’s; staying in the rain is strange.
D. No one—All of the three people told the truth; William killed himself.
C
The word “zhiyin”, which means close friends, comes from the story of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi in the Warring States Period.
Boya was good at playing the guqin. One day, he was playing music on his way home on the boat. To Boya’s surprise, Ziqi, a woodcutter who happened to pass by, could understand exactly what he wanted to express through his music. After a long talk, they became good friends. Since Boya had to return to his state, they agreed to meet again in the following year.
Unfortunately, when getting back to visit Ziqi, Boya heard that his friend had died from a disease (疾病). Boya was so sad and in front of Ziqi’s tomb (墓), he played again the music he had played when they first met. The feeling of the music was so strong that it was as if the rivers and the mountains were crying. When finishing playing, Boya broke his guqin into pieces. From then on, Boya never played again.
People in the Song Dynasty built the Guqin Tai in Hanyang to memorize the deep friendship between Boya and Ziqi. It became an important part of the local culture.
Zhiyin culture has new development in the new period. The famous ancient Chinese classical (古典) music piece Gaoshan Liushui was performed during the G20 Summit in Hangzhou Zhejiang Province in 2016. The musical performance not only showed the beauty of traditional Chinese culture, but also expressed China’s willingness to develop its friendship with people from around the world.
52. Why did Boya and Ziqi become good friends?
A. They often went out on boat. B. They often cut wood together.

①Is rice your favorite main food? Over 90 percent of the world’s rice is eaten in the Asia-Pacific area. However, eating rice can increase the risk of developing health problems such as diabetes (糖尿病).
②Traditional white rice has a high GI, which can cause blood sugar to rise quickly. Research has found a connection between eating much rice, especially traditional white rice, and an increase risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
③Now, around 537 million people around the world have diabetes. This number is expected to reach 738 million by 2045. Luckily, researchers in the Philippines have created a new kind of rice that may help reduce the growing number of diabetes.
④Researchers at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines have teamed up with many other international groups. Based on the IRRI’s large rice gene (基因) bank, they worked on 380 kinds of seeds over 10 years to find out genes with lower GI and higher protein (蛋白质). They then combined (组合) them to develop a new, healthier kind of rice.
⑤The new rice has a very low GI and twice the amount of protein found in traditional white rice. Rice with higher protein may help to slower digestion and absorption (消化吸收), meaning they may be able to help control blood sugar levels.
⑥According to professor Yvonne Pinto, this new kind of rice can help meet important goals for food safety. “This could have a big influence in Asia, as well as in Africa,” he said.
56. According to the article, which is TRUE about the traditional white rice?
A. It has low GI. B. It can cause diabetes.
C. It has high protein. D. It digests (消化) slowly.
57. What can we infer from the article?
A. The new kind of rice has low GI and high protein.
B. There may be more people having diabetes in Asia-Pacific area.
C. People in Asia-Pacific area won’t eat traditional white rice any more.
D. The new kind of rice is chosen from 380 kinds of seeds.
58. What’s the purpose of writing this article?
A. To show there are more and more people having diabetes.
B. To remind us to pay attention to food safety.
C. To introduce a science achievement in creating new rice.
D. To tell us eating less rice can reduce the risk of having diabetes.
59. Which is the structure of the article?

Recently, Feng Zhiliang is popular on the Internet because of a video shared online by a passenger. In the video, he announces (播报) bus stops in both Chinese and English. Some online users said, “It’s like experiencing a flight for just two yuan!”
Feng Zhiliang, 43 years old, has been working for the Handan Public Transport Group for 15 years. When did he have the idea of starting to announce bus stops in two languages? It started when Feng welcomed a foreign passenger with “Hello. Happy New Year!” during the Spring Festival. Encouraged by the passenger’s enthusiastic response (热情回应), Feng decided to make a change.
Feng’s English learning began almost from the very beginning-—he joined online courses, searched for many kinds of English materials, and used translation software to study whenever he could. He would keep studying for another hour after a day’s work. Even the 20-minute break during the day at the bus station was not wasted. After years of hard work and preparation, Feng began making bilingual (双语的) announcements during the evening rush hour, when there are the most passengers, starting in early 2023.
“I made several mistakes and felt upset when I tried it for the first time, but to my surprise, many people gave me thumbs-up and supported me. So I feel that I should persist (坚持) and make bilingual announcements one of my goals. It’s also one of my wishes,” Feng said.
After a year and a half offering bilingual announcements, Feng has made fans. Many passengers choose to take the No.38 bus, while some parents bring their children to experience the bilingual environment.

Every successful team needs strong leadership. It’s like a guide on a trip and a bridge over water. It’s like a hand in trouble and a voice in silence. Becoming an excellent leader is a challenging journey. It requires lots of hard work and practice.
A good leader should drive the team toward a common goal, such as finishing a project, winning a competition or solving a problem together. But he shouldn’t only care about reaching the goal. Team members also hope to grow by trying new tasks to build courage (勇气), working with others to learn teamwork, and discovering their strong and weak points to know themselves better. So, a good leader should learn to find a balance (平衡).
What’s more, a successful leader should be someone that others respect. His fairness can bring people together. At the same time, his honesty (诚实) can help improve the team. He doesn’t avoid pointing out problems when needed. Such a leader is easy to be believed in, and because of that, the team will work better together.
For those who want to become good leaders, schools are great places to start developing leadership. Schools provide them with many chances to practice in real situations. For example, in class group work, students learn to make their teams organized, listen to everyone’s ideas, and make right decisions when disagreements happen. With these early experiences, they can develop leadership step by step. No matter what jobs students wish to do after growing up, early leadership experiences make them feel more ready to lead.
Summary
This passage talks about the importance of leadership and teaches us ____74____. Firstly, we must have the ability to ____75____. Besides, being ____76____ can make us respected and trusted. For us students, schools are great places to practice skills by organizing group work, listening to others, and solving disagreements. Your brain needs fresh materials to work with. When you find new and interesting things, it helps your imagination grow. For example, try a different type of movie this week.
B 49. C 50. B 51.

根据“he joined online courses, searched for many kinds of English materials, and used translation software to study whenever he could. He would keep studying for another hour after a day’s work.” He joined online courses, searched for many kinds of English materials, used translation software to study whenever he could, and kept studying for another hour after a day’s work.

VII.
69. The hair band must be his little sister’s.
The hair band ________ ________ be his little sister’s.
【答案】 ①. can ②. not
故填can;not。
70. He values the photo. The photo reminds him of the good memories.
He values the photo ________ ________ him of the good memories.
【答案】 ①. that/which ②. reminds
故填that/which;reminds。
71. Did the writer translate the novel into different languages?
________ the novel ________ into different languages by the writer?
Was ②. translated
故填Was;translated。
He was excited yesterday, because he ________ ________ his father.
【答案】 ①. heard ②. from
故填heard;from。
73. for, to, is, two, good, laughing, a, hours, relax, way (连词成句)
______________________________________________________!
Laughing for two hours is a good way to relax
动名词短语laughing for two hours作主语;is是系动词; a good way是表语;to relax是不定式作后置定语,修饰way。故填Laughing for two hours is a good way to relax“大笑两小时是一种很好的放松方式”。
VIII.

The Most Beautiful Moment in School
How time flies! Three years of junior high school life has passed so quickly.
When our school held the “Most Beautiful Moment” show, one photo came to mind. This photo was taken in our school garden last autumn. At that time, our class was having a big clean-up. My deskmate Lily and I were picking up fallen leaves together. We held some yellow and red leaves in our hands. Some of our classmates were watering the small trees behind us, and our teacher was taking the photo for us.
I chose this photo because it reminded me of the happy days we spent together. This photo is not just a photo. It is a sweet memory of our junior high school life.
