It was a beautiful midwinter day in Pretoria. The sun shone warmly, and the air was fresh, calling us outdoors. A friend and I went for a walk up a small hill. Everywhere around us the grass was a dull brown color, as if painted with a dirty brush. I told my thought to my friend who, in reply, drew from his coat a pocket microscope (显微镜). Bending down, he picked some of the ugly-colored growth and handed it to me with the microscope. I could hardly believe my eyes, for suddenly I was looking at some shining tiny flowers of lovely color. It seemed strange that so much beauty should be so hidden, a secret life carried on by nature beneath a dull exterior (外表).
Some days later, while I was at the hospital where I worked, a woman entered with three children. Her hair hung in untidy wisps round a face whose uncared-for skin looked dried and dull. She sat down and waited her turn with the patience of the poor. The children gradually gathered courage and made braver explorations as time went by. Suddenly the little girl overbalanced and fell. Both her brothers, a little bigger than her, rushed anxiously to her aid. When the child fell, the mother had at first started up in alarm, but when she saw that the child was not really hurt and that her brothers were caring for her with such love, her eyes grew soft and a look of such indescribable love passed over her face — once again I looked at great beauty.
Beauty lies on every side; we must develop our own microscopes of perception (感知能力) in order to look through the physical exterior which, like the grass-covered hillside, conceals a beauty still hidden from our eyes.
4. Why did the author and his friend go for a walk up a small hill?
A. To enjoy the beauty of the day. B. To test his friend’s microscope.
C. To check the growth of the grass. D. To find hidden beauty on the hill.
5. What was the beauty the author found in the woman he met in the hospital?
A Her wisdom. B. Her strong will.
C. Her patience as a patient. D. Her great love as a mother.
6. What does the underlined word “conceals” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Steals. B. Freezes. C. covers. D. Exposes.
7. What does the author intend to tell us through the text?
A. Nature can teach us a lot. B. The poor have a soft heart.
C. We should learn to find hidden beauty. D. We should never look down upon the poor.
A 5. D 6. C 7. C

Researchers in Australia are using a robot powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the way farmers raise cows: The robot has four wheels and is painted red. Researchers have named the robot SwagBot. It can drive by itself and move cows from one field to another based on the condition of the soil and plant life.
Researchers said SwagBot is becoming the world’s first “smart cow.” They believe it can make cow farming more efficient (高效的) and put less pressure on the environment.
SwagBot was first put into use in 2016. At that time, it could only move around fields where cows were eating grass. Over time, scientists have added sensors (传感器) and AI systems to the robot. These systems help SwagBot judge the health, type, and thickness of grasses and plants in fields and observe the health of the cow.
The robot uses this information to move cows to the best areas for eating grass. The goal to move cows to a new grass area before they can damage (毁坏) the grass in a particular field. This can prevent damage to the soil. The robot can also send the information back to farmers.
Australia is one of the world’s biggest exporters (出口商) of beef. It has around 30 million cows spreading across large areas that are often dry. As a result, some grass areas are of low quality and do not have a lot of grass.
Farmers carefully assess how many animals their land can support. However, many farmers have little control over where the animals eat grass within large areas of land. Overeating can lead to poor soil that supports plant and animal life.
SwagBot is still in development. It is part of a growing movement in agriculture towards robotics. Farming experts hope robots can make production more efficient. Robots can also reduce the need for workers in places, like Australia, where finding workers in areas with a low population can be difficult.
8. What about SwagBot does the author want to tell us in paragraph 3?
A Its special appearance. B. Its cost.
C. Its continuous improvement. D. Its influence.
9. What’s the purpose in using the robot to manage cows?
A. To bring comfort to cows.
B. To control the number of cows.
C. To prevent other animals attacking cows.
D. To avoid having harmful effect on grassland.
10. What may be the future of agriculture in Australia?
A. It will introduce more robots.
B. It will increase the areas for raising cows.
C. Fewer people will depend on agriculture for a living.
D. Traditional methods will be used to check cows’ health.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Australia’s Grassland Is in Danger
B. Robot Leads Cows to Greener Fields
C. Science Is Changing the Cow Industry
D Australia Is One of the Biggest Beef Exporters
C 9. D 10. A 11. B

Some students get so nervous before a test that they perform poorly even if they know the materials. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. These students often begin to focus too much on the results, and this anxiety consumes attention and memory resources, leaving less mental capacity for the exam itself.
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. They suggest that highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their concerns just before an exam.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. Participants took two short math tests. After the first test, they were told either to sit quietly or to write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers turned to younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students with high test anxiety who engaged in our writing intervention (干预), the link between their anxiety and performance effectively disappeared. They performed just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam? Professor Beilock says students can practice the method independently at home or in the library and it still leads to improved performance.
12. What may the students begin to worry about before an exam?
A. What other students do during the test.
B. Whether they can pass the exam.
C. Whether they have remembered the materials.
D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
13. What is the solution developed by the researchers?
A. Encouraging the students to focus completely on the test.
B. Having the students sit quietly before the test.
C. Asking the students to ignore the test entirely.
D. Letting the students write about their worries before the test.
14. According to Beilock, what happened to those who thought about things unrelated to the test?
A. They performed the same as usual.
B. They felt less nervous right before the test.
C. They improved their ability to control their feelings.
D. They scored lower than those who wrote about their feelings.
15. What can be inferred about the method from the last paragraph?
A. It must be strictly timed to work effectively.
B. It is only a last- minute solution for anxiety.
C. It remains useful even without perfect conditions.
D. It depends heavily on the writing environment.
B 13. D 14. D 15. C

根据前文“Everyone wants to be a good friend, but sometimes we might not be sure what it truly means. Being a good friend isn’t just about having fun together; it’s about the everyday efforts that strengthen your bond.(每个人都想成为一个好朋友,但有时我们可能不确定它的真正含义。做一个好朋友不仅仅是一起玩;它是关于每天的努力,加强你们的关系)”以及后文“It’s built on a foundation of trust, support, and respect.(它建立在信任、支持和尊重的基础上)”可知,空前句给出了友谊的定义,空后句则指出了友谊的三大基石,所以E项“True friendship goes beyond simply sharing hobbies or interests.(真正的友谊不仅仅是分享爱好或兴趣)”承接上文,引出下文,符合文意。故选E项。
【17题详解】
根据前文“Trust is the first essential element. A trustworthy friend always keeps his promise. If you say you’re going to do something, follow through.(信任是第一要素。一个值得信赖的朋友总是信守诺言。如果你说你要做某事,那就坚持到底)”可知,本段主题是“信任”。空前句描述了信任的具体行为,所以C项“It also creates a safe space for honesty.(这也为诚实创造了一个安全的空间)”指出了上述行为带来的直接结果。符合文意。故选C项。
【18题详解】
根据前文“Another key part is offering support in both good and bad times. Celebrate your friend’s successes as if they were your own.(另一个关键部分是无论顺境还是逆境都提供支持。庆祝朋友的成功,就像庆祝自己的成功一样)”可知,本段主题是“支持”。空前句描述的是在顺境时的支持,所以空处应是逆境时的支持,所以D项“However, it’s equally important to be there during tough times.(然而,在困难时期陪伴在身边也同样重要)”符合文意。
此处需要一个总起句来点明本段的核心品质,根据后文“This includes listening to them without interruption and valuing their opinions even when you disagree. At its heart, respect means that you accept your friend for who they are. No one is perfect, and disagreements are normal.(这包括不间断地倾听他们的意见,即使你不同意他们的意见,也要重视他们的意见。从本质上讲,尊重意味着你接受你的朋友是谁。人无完人,有分歧是正常的)”可知,本段主题是“尊重”,所以F项“Respect, the third pillar, is shown through your actions and attitudes.(尊重,第三个支柱,通过你的行为和态度表现出来)”符合本段主题。故选F项。
根据前文“At its heart, respect means that you accept your friend for who they are. No one is perfect, and disagreements are normal.(从本质上讲,尊重意味着你接受你的朋友是谁。人无完人,有分歧是正常的)”以及后文“Talk things through honestly, and be willing to forgive. As a matter of fact, a true friend values the friendship more than the need to be right.(开诚布公地谈一谈,并愿意原谅别人。事实上,一个真正的朋友比起证明自己正确,更重视友谊)”可知,空前提出了问题,后文是具体方法,所以空处应是过渡句,提出方法,所以B项“What matters is how you handle them.(重要的是你如何处理它们)”符合文意,承上启下。故选B项。

第一节(满分20分)

I had always been careful around Max. He was the quiet kid in our class and he hardly spoke to anyone. When he did, his words were rudely brief and often misunderstood. Rumors (谣言) about him spread like wildfire — some said he got into fights after school, others claimed he had once stolen a teacher’s wallet. I didn’t know if any of them was true, but I stayed away, just like everyone else.
Then one Friday morning, Max didn’t show up to class. Rumors about his absence started flying. “He got suspended (停课),” whispered a girl next to me. “I heard he struck a guy outside the library.” I wasn’t surprised, and nodded in agreement.
Later that day, I went to enjoy the first warm day of spring at the park where I saw Max sitting alone on the swings. His usual defensive expression was gone, and replaced by something I hadn’t expected: sadness. I walked over with curiosity, noticing a wrinkled piece of paper in his hand.
“What’s that?” I asked. At first, he seemed unsure. Then, he handed it to me. It was a hospital form and the name on it was his younger sister’s. I looked at him, confused.
“She’s been sick for months,” Max explained, his voice barely heard. “Yesterday was bad. My mom couldn’t leave work, so I stayed at the hospital and looked after her all night.”
It hit me then how wrong we had all been about Max. The tough outward appearance, the distance he wasn’t trying to push people away. He was carrying a weight none of us understood.
The next Monday, Max returned, but rumors remained. Someone even started calling him “Mad Max”. I couldn’t stand it anymore.

根据文章第一段“Rumors about him spread like wildfire — some said he got into fights after school, others claimed he had once stolen a teacher’s wallet.(关于他的谣言像野火一样蔓延 —— 有人说他放学后打架,还有人说他曾经偷过老师的钱包。)”
根据第一段“I didn’t know if any of them was true, but I stayed away, just like everyone else.(我不知道这些谣言是否属实,但我像其他人一样远离他。)” keep a distance from为固定搭配,意为“与……保持距离”。故填distance。
③考查细节理解。根据第二段“Then one Friday morning, Max didn’t show up to class.(后来在一个周五的早上,Max没来上课。)” be absent from为固定搭配,意为“缺席……”。
根据第二段“I wasn’t surprised, and nodded in agreement.(我并不惊讶,还点头表示认同。)”
根据第三段“Later that day, I went to enjoy the first warm day of spring at the park where I saw Max sitting alone on the swings.(那天晚些时候,我去公园享受春日里的第一个暖阳,却看见Max独自坐在秋千上。)”
根据第三段“I walked over with curiosity, noticing a wrinkled piece of paper in his hand.(我好奇地走过去,注意到他手里攥着一张皱巴巴的纸。)”
根据第四段“At first, he seemed unsure. Then, he handed it to me.(起初他有些迟疑,之后还是把那张纸递给了我。)”
根据第六段“It hit me then how wrong we had all been about Max.(那一刻我才意识到,我们所有人都错看了Max。)”
根据第六段“It hit me then how wrong we had all been about Max. The tough outward appearance, the distance he wasn’t trying to push people away. He was carrying a weight none of us understood.(那一刻我才意识到,我们所有人都错看了Max。他那副强硬的外表,那种疏离的态度,并不是在刻意疏远他人。他只是背负着我们无人能懂的重担。)”可知,作者得知真相后,为之前不公平地评判Max而感到懊悔。feel regretful for意为“为……感到懊悔”。故填regretful。

My mom couldn’t leave work, so I stayed at the hospital and looked after her all night.(昨天情况很糟糕。 Because his younger sister had been sick for months and her condition got worse the day before; his mother couldn’t leave work, so he had to stay at the hospital to look after his sister all night.
根据最后一段“I couldn’t stand it anymore.(我再也无法忍受下去了。)” I would stand up for Max, stop the rumors, and tell the other students the truth about why he was absent from class.
根据第六段“It hit me then how wrong we had all been about Max. The tough outward appearance, the distance he wasn’t trying to push people away. He was carrying a weight none of us understood.(那一刻我才意识到,我们所有人都错看了Max。他那副强硬的外表,那种疏离的态度,并不是在刻意疏远他人。他只是背负着我们无人能懂的重担。)”可知,这段经历让作者明白不能仅凭谣言和外在表象评判他人,要学会理解他人的处境与难处。故填I would learn that we shouldn’t judge a person by rumors or his outward appearance; instead, we should try to understand him and his situation first.

A. Her wisdom.

A. Its special appearance. B. Its cost.
D. Australia Is One of the Biggest Beef Exporters
D
C It remains useful even without perfect conditions.
D. It depends heavily on the writing environment.
