In America, the first Halloween celebrations were a way to mark the end-of-year harvest season, and the food that was served mainly consisted of homemade seasonal treats like caramel apples and mixed nuts. There were no soul cakes — or candies, for that matter — to be found.
It wasn't until the 1950s that trick-or-treating gained popularity in the US. Following the Great Depression and World War II, the suburbs were booming, and people were looking for excuses to have fun and get to know their neighbors. The old practice of souling came back to life again and was made into an excuse for kids to dress up in costumes and roam (漫游) their neighborhoods. Common trick-or-treat offerings included nuts, coins, and homemade baked goods.
That changed when the candy companies got their hands on the holiday. They had already convinced consumers that they needed candy on Christmas and Easter, and they were looking for an equally lucrative opportunity to market candy in the fall. The new practice of trick-or-treating was almost too good to be true. Manufacturers downsized candies into smaller, bite-sized packages and began marketing them as treats for Halloween. Adults were grateful to have a convenient alternative to baking, kids loved the sweet treats, and the candy companies made billions.
Today, it's hard to imagine Halloween without Skittles, chocolate bars, and the perennial candy corn debates. But when you're digging through a bag or bowl of Halloween candy this October, remember that you could have been eating soul cakes instead.
4. What did people enjoy on earlier Halloween?
A. Caramel apples. B. Soul cakes. C. Candies. D. Peanuts.
5. What probably helped make trick-or-treating popular in the US?
A. The Great Depression. B. World War II.
C. The kids’ practice. D. Christmas and Easter.
6. Which word can best replace “lucrative” in Paragraph 3?
A. Confident. B. Beneficial. C. Unforgettable. D. Changeable.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Candies in America. B. Halloween Celebrations.
C. Candies and Halloween. D. Americans and Festivals.

Language and culture are connected to each other in so many ways: language names and explains important events and people. When the Fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792) ordered a lunch (so that he didn’t have to leave the gaming tables) there was no word to refer to the bread-and-butter-encased food that has ever since borne his name. Another example is grog, a drink of rum(朗姆酒)mixed with water. The word was coined from the nickname(绰号)of Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757)—Old Grog. The nickname came from the cloak(披风)of “ grogram ” which he habitually wore, and it provided the word for watered-down rum which he gave to sailors. In Australia it has become the word for alcoholic(含酒精的)drink of any kind. Both sandwich and grog are known throughout the English-speaking world, and have been borrowed into other European languages—sandwich into French, and grog into German.
In Australia some rather more specialised foods go by the names of local heroes and heroines. The lamington owes its name to Charles Wallace Alexander Napier Cochrane-Baillie, Second Baron of Lamington, who was governor of Queensland from 1896 to 1901. He was well-known for his concern for the treatment of local workers in northern Qucensland. Another sweet, Peach Melba, was invented in 1892 or 1893 by the French cook Auguste Escoffier at the Savoy Hotel, London, to respect the Australian singer Nellie Melba.
Some words have their origin in the sports world. The boxer Larry Foley (1849-1917) stopped boxing at the age of 30, having developed a training school for young boxers. His name is probably the one behind the expression “give someone Larry Dooley". Also a sporting hero was the footballer Roy Cazaly (1893-1963), who is the person in “ Up There Cazaly ” , used well beyond football as an expression of encouragement. He became a great footballer by taking amazingly high marks for the St Kilda and South Melbourne clubs.
8 What's the origin of the word"grog"?
A. It was first used by Vernon.
B. It was borrowed from German.
C. It dates back to the late 18th century.
D. It has some relationship with clothes.
9. Which of the following is related to an Australian singer?
A. Sandwich. B. Grog.
C. Lamington. D. Peach Melba.
10. What is the possible meaning of "give someone Larry Dooley"?
A. Give up somebody. B. Encourage somebody.
C. Give somebody a beating. D. Teach somebody to fight.
11. What similarity do the words and expressions mentioned in the text share?
A. They are difficult to understand. B. They come from people’s names.
C. They have been used for centuries. D. They are mainly used in Australia.
D
The ice around Alaska is not just melting. It's gotten so low that the situation is endangering some people's food and jobs.
“The seas are extraordinary warm. It is affecting the ability for Americans in the area to put food on the table right now,” said University of Alaska climate expert Rick Thoman.
Ocean temperatures in the Chukchi and North Bering seas are nearly 5°C above normal, satellite data shows.
“The northern Bering and southern Chukchi Seas are baking. And there are immediate local and economic influences along the state's western and northern coastlines. Birds and sea animals are showing up dead and sea temperatures are warm enough to support algae (藻类) to grow rapidly, robbing sea animals of oxygen and sunshine.” he said.
Many coastal Alaska towns are facing dire situation since they depend on fishing to support their economy and feed people who live there.
“Much of what the people eat there comes from food they harvest themselves” said Brian Brettschneider at the International Arctic Research Center. “If people can't get out on the ice to hunt seals or whales, that affects their food security. It is a human crisis (危机) of survival.”
The warming is a sure signal of a warming planet, according to Brettschneider.
“This event is unquestionably a reflection of our changing climate. And this year's conditions will have a lasting effect. These extraordinary warm waters will take a while to cool off as winter approaches, and later and thinner ice is expected in the coming winter.” he said.
“What is happening in coastal Alaska is what is coming in one sense for everybody else,” he said. “Most people are feeling the effects of climate change even if they don't know it. Changes are happening, and changes will be more obvious. ”
12. Why is the food for people in Alaska at risk according to Rick Thoman?
A. The sea water is too warm for creatures in the sea.
B. Climate change causes the increasing death of sea creatures.
C. Fishers are forced to quit their jobs because of climate change.
D Higher temperature produces poisonous plants that can't be eaten.
13. What does the underlined word “dire” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Inconvenient B. Familiar. C. Sudden. D. Awful
14. What is Brettschneider's attitude towards the current situation of climate change?
A. Positive. B. Curious. C. Concerned. D. Unclear.
15. What message does the author try to express in this text?
A. People can do nothing to deal with climate change.
B. Climate change makes people in Alaska live a hard life.
C. More efforts should be made to protect the sea life in Alaska.
D. There are many reasons why the ocean in Alaska is warming.

D. Changeable.

A. Candies in America. B. Halloween Celebrations.

8. What's the origin of the word"grog"?

“Much of what the people eat there comes from food they harvest themselves,” said Brian Brettschneider at the International Arctic Research Center.
12 Why is the food for people in Alaska at risk according to Rick Thoman?
A. The sea water is too warm for creatures in the sea.
B. Climate change causes the increasing death of sea creatures.
C. Fishers are forced to quit their jobs because of climate change.
D. Higher temperature produces poisonous plants that can't be eaten.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. B
