Zhang Guimei, a principal (校长) of a high school for girls to study for free in Lijiang, Yunnan Province, has

changed many girls’ lives in the mountain areas.

She came up with the idea of setting up a high school for girls from poverty areas where many of them had to give up studying. She learned that most of the dropouts (辍学生) would get married early because of poverty (贫困). Between 2002 and 2007, Zhang spent her free time seeking for donation (捐款). However, many people didn’t understand what she was doing and didn’t give her response (回应) at all. Finally, Zhang’s efforts have drawn attention from the public and the local government. With the local government’s support, Huaping High School for Girls was opened in September 2008. In 2009, due to the poor conditions, nine teachers resigned (辞职), leaving only eight teachers. But this couldn’t change Zhang’s dream to offer education for local girls. She led the remaining teachers to work together.

With the efforts of Zhang and her colleagues, over 1, 800 girls have been accepted by universities, which changed their fates (命运).
