They are in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. New studies say these small bits may be bad for human health, especially for our hearts and lungs. It’s not easy to avoid them completely, but experts have given teens simple ways to touch them less. What Are Microplastics? They come from big plastic things breaking down, like packaging, man-made cloth and kitchen cutting boards. “These bits are everywhere around us,” said Abby Langer, a dietitian. Because they are so small, people take them in without noticing when eating or breathing. This makes scientists more and more worried. Foods With More Microplastics A new study shows some foods have more plastic-related chemicals. Fish pick up microplastics from dirty water. Processed foods (like canned or packaged snacks) also take in more bits when being made — even foods with “organic” labels aren’t totally free of this. Practical Ways to Reduce Contact ·Use less plastic: Choose glass bowls, steel tools or wooden cutting boards instead of plastic ones. ·Don’t heat plastic containers: Hot temperatures make plastic let out more microplastics and other harmful things faster. ·Store food better: Use glass containers instead of plastic wrap or one-time plastic bags for food. ·Put in water filtering (过滤) tools: A good filtering tool can get rid of most microplastics in drinking water. ·Eat fresher food: Eating fewer processed foods helps lower the risk of taking in microplastics. Fresh foods don’t touch plastic as much when being made. 1. What can we learn about microplastics from the text? A. They are larger than 5 mm in width. B. People may take them in unconsciously. C. New studies prove their harm to our hearts. D. Organic foods contain/no microplastics at all. 2. What is a practical way to reduce microplastic intake? A. Using wooden cutting boards in kitchen. B. Heating plastic bowls at high temperature. C. Avoiding using filters for drinking water. D. Eating more canned or packaged snacks. 3. Where is this passage most probably taken from? A. A research paper B. A news report C. A health magazine D. A public announcement 【答案】1. B 2. A 3. 根据What Are Microplastics?部分中“Because they are so small, people take them in without noticing when eating or breathing.(因为它们太小了,人们在吃东西或呼吸时会在不知不觉中吸入它们。)” 根据Practical Ways to Reduce Contact部分中“Use less plastic: Choose glass bowls, steel tools or wooden cutting boards instead of plastic ones.(少用塑料:选择玻璃碗、钢制工具或木制砧板,而不是塑料的。)” 故选A。 通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“Microplastics — tiny plastic pieces smaller than 5 mm wide — are in almost every part of our daily life. They are in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. New studies say these small bits may be bad for human health, especially for our hearts and lungs.(微塑料——宽度小于5毫米的微小塑料碎片——几乎存在于我们日常生活的每一个角落。它们存在于我们呼吸的空气中、我们喝的水中和我们吃的食物中。新的研究表明,这些小碎片可能对人类健康有害,尤其是对我们的心脏和肺有害。)”可知,文章主要讲述了微塑料的来源、对健康的影响及减少接触的实用方法,这些内容与健康相关,因此这篇文章最有可能来自一本健康杂志。故选C。 B Sumi has a daughter named Anna who carries a nickname: “Number 23”. No matter what the exam subject or school term is, Anna always lands 23rd out of 50 students in her class. Sumi can’t help but feel worried. One day, Sumi went on a weekend trip with her friends and their families. During lunch, two boys got into a heated argument over a single candy. Even their parents couldn’t calm them down. Anna walked over calmly and said, “Let’s throw a coin. The winner gets the candy.” Simple as that, the fight ended. Later, on the way back, they got caught in a traffic jam. The kids grew bored and impatient. Anna stepped in. She told silly jokes like a caring big sister, making even the adults laugh. She also cut leftover candy boxes and turned them into cute paper animals and gave one to each kid as a gift. The other parents thanked her with bright smiles, and for the first time in years, Sumi felt proud of her daughter. Then one afternoon, Anna’s teacher called. “Anna’s grades are still around 23rd,” she said gently, “but we added a question to the last exam: ‘Who’s your favorite classmate, and why?’ Almost every student wrote Anna’s name. They say she’s kind, listens carefully when others talk, and always helps people in need. She’s a truly wonderful child.” Sumi’s eyes were filled with tears of joy. Sumi suddenly realized that grade isn’t the only type of success. Being kind, staying happy, and being true to yourself are the truest kinds of success. Maybe being “Number 23” isn’t such a bad thing after all. 4. What made Sumi anxious? A. Anna’s exam results. B. Anna’s lack of hobbies. C. The family’s poor condition. D. The mother-daughter relationship. 5. Which of the following can best describe Anna? A. A quiet loner. B. A book fan. C. A day-dreamer. D. A problem-solver. 6. What did Sumi realize at the end of the story? A. Anna should study harder. B. Anna has her own strengths. C. Anna has improved in study. D. Anna needs to be more confident. 7. Which could be a suitable title for the text? A. Grades: A Mother’s Anxiety B. Anna’s Small Acts of Kindness C. Number 23: The Quiet Hero D. Sumi’s Expectation for Anna 【答案】4. A 5. D 6. B 7. 根据第一段中“No matter what the exam subject or school term is, Anna always lands 23rd out of 50 students in her class. Sumi can’t help but feel worried. (无论考试科目或学期如何,Anna总是在班级50名学生中排名第23。Sumi不禁感到担忧。)”可知,让Sumi感到焦虑的是Anna的考试成绩。故选A项。 根据第二段中“Anna walked over calmly and said, “Let’s throw a coin. The winner gets the candy.” Simple as that, the fight ended. (Anna平静地走过去说:“我们来掷硬币吧。赢的人得到糖果。”就这么简单,战斗结束了。)”和第三段中“Anna stepped in. She told silly jokes like a caring big sister, making even the adults laugh. She also cut leftover candy boxes and turned them into cute paper animals and gave one to each kid as a gift. (Anna介入。她像一个有爱心的大姐姐一样讲着愚蠢的笑话,连大人都笑了。她还把剩下的糖果盒剪成可爱的纸动物,送给每个孩子一个作为礼物。)”可知,Anna冷静地提出抛硬币决定糖果归属,迅速平息争执,还用笑话和手工成功安抚孩子,这些表明她是一个善于解决问题的人。故选D项。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Sumi suddenly realized that grade isn’t the only type of success. Being kind, staying happy, and being true to yourself are the truest kinds of success. (Sumi突然意识到成绩并不是唯一的成功。善良、快乐、忠于自己是最真实的成功。)”可知,Sumi明白了成绩不出色但拥有可贵品质的Anna其实很好,这表明她最终认识到Anna拥有自己的优点。故选B项。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Sumi has a daughter named Anna who carries a nickname: “Number 23”. (Sumi有一个女儿叫Anna,她有一个昵称:“第二十三名”。)”和最后一段中“Maybe being “Number 23” isn’t such a bad thing after all. (也许成为“第二十三名”并不是一件坏事。)”可知,文章以Anna的绰号“Number 23 (第二十三名)”为线索,突出Anna虽成绩居中却用低调的善良和行动赢得了同学们的喜爱,并得到家长们的认可。因此,C项“第二十三名:沉默的英雄”精准概括Anna的形象,最适合作为文章标题。故选C项。 C Jeans are usually dyed with indigo But this dark purple-blue dyeing substance doesn’t easily mix into water. Thus, strong chemicals are used to break it down into a liquid that can turn the cloth blue. Each year, thousands of tons of these strong chemicals go into making jeans, already hurting the workers who handle them, let alone the fact that some of the chemicals can cause cancer. So Qvortrup, a chemist, wanted to find a safer and greener way to make jeans blue. For their new dyeing technique, the researchers chose to use indican (糖芥), a substance in plants that can help produce natural indigo dye and break down in water without harmful chemicals. Their first idea was to mix indican with an enzyme that would change it to indigo. It worked— the cloth turned blue within a few minutes. But then the team also placed pieces of cloth in indican alone and left them by the window in their lab. And to their surprise, these “were also turning blue without us doing anything,” Qvortrup said. As their research went on, the team found that sunlight could react with the indican on the cloth and turn it to indigo. Then, the team placed more cloth in an indican-only liquid under different light sources. “Over the next couple of hours, the cloth will turn blue, proving that the light will catalyze the color,” Qvortrup added. These methods are both promising. The enzyme-based method cut out the harmful impacts by more than 90 percent, compared to normal jeans dyeing and the light-driven dyeing might cut the impacts by more than 70 percent, the researchers said. However, the light method might take up less land than the enzyme method, and if the researchers can cut out electricity costs by dyeing with just sunlight, the light method may prove even better for the environment. “I hope these methods will have an impact even before they reach factories. Simply learning about more sustainable ways to make jeans may make jean-wearers think about where their clothes come from. If you want to wear blue jeans, be aware that there are better ways to make them than are used right now,” Qvortrup said. 8. What is the problem with the traditional way of dyeing jeans? A. Covering high labor costs. B. Missing the mark in fashion. C. Harming jeans makers’ health. D. Struggling with mass production. 9. What does “catalyze” in paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. hide. B. Develop. C. Remove. D. Match. 10. What is the advantage of light-driven dyeing over enzyme-based dyeing? A Its space-saving capability. B. Its little side effect on cloth. C. Its efficiency in energy use. D. Its independence from electricity. 11. What do Qvortrup’s words in the last paragraph mainly imply? A. Improving factory equipment helps. B. Using green dye changes everything. C. Developing new dyes requires attention. D. Raising consumer awareness matters. C 9. B 10. A 11. 根据文章第一段中的“Each year, thousands of tons of these strong chemicals go into making jeans, already hurting the workers who handle them, let alone the fact that some of the chemicals can cause cancer.(每年,成千上万吨的强化学物质被用于制作牛仔裤,这已经伤害了处理这些化学物质的工人,更不用说其中一些化学物质会致癌了。)” 根据文章第三段中的“As their research went on, the team found that sunlight could react with the indican on the cloth and turn it to indigo. Then, the team placed more cloth in an indican - only liquid under different light sources. ‘Over the next couple of hours, the cloth will turn blue, proving that the light will catalyze the color,’ Qvortrup added.(随着研究的继续,研究小组发现阳光可以与布料上的靛苷反应,将其变成靛蓝。然后,研究小组将更多的布料放在仅含靛苷的液体中,置于不同的光源下。“在接下来的几个小时里,布料会变蓝,这证明光线会……颜色,”Qvortrup补充道。)”可知,阳光能使布料变蓝,也就是光线能促使颜色产生变化,所以“catalyze”意思是“促使,发展”。B选项“Develop.(发展)”符合题意。故选B。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段中的“However, the light method might take up less land than the enzyme method, and if the researchers can cut out electricity costs by dyeing with just sunlight, the light method may prove even better for the environment.(然而,光照法可能比酶法占用更少的土地,而且如果研究人员能够仅用阳光染色来节省电力成本,光照法可能对环境更有利。)” 故选A。 根据文章最后一段中Qvortrup说的话“I hope these methods will have an impact even before they reach factories. Simply learning about more sustainable ways to make jeans may make jean - wearers think about where their clothes come from. If you want to wear blue jeans, be aware that there are better ways to make them than are used right now.(我希望这些方法在进入工厂之前就能产生影响。仅仅了解更可持续的牛仔裤制作方法,就可能让牛仔裤穿着者思考他们的衣服来自哪里。如果你想穿蓝色牛仔裤,要知道有比现在使用的更好的制作方法。)”可知,Qvortrup希望人们能了解更可持续的牛仔裤制作方法,让消费者意识到有更好的制作牛仔裤的方式,也就是提高消费者的意识很重要。故选D。 D From an airplane, cars crawling down the highway look like ants. But actual ants — unlike cars — somehow manage to avoid the stop-and-go traffic. Researchers are studying their cooperative strategies to learn how to program self-driving cars that don’t jam up. The free flow of traffic becomes unstable as the density(密度)of cars increases on a highway. At15 vehicles per mile per lane, one driver applying his brake can cause a wave of congestion(拥挤). “It’ s a kind of phase transition(相变),” like water turning from a liquid to a solid form, says Katsuhiro Nishinari, a mathematical physicist. His previous research had shown that ants can maintain their flow even at high densities. So what’s their secret? In a recent study, researchers found that the ants travel in groups of three to twenty that move at nearly constant speeds while keeping distances between one another — and they don’t speed up to pass others. Human drivers at rush hour rarely follow such rules. “We’ re maximizing the interests of individuals, which is why, at a given point, you start to have a traffic jam,” says study co-author Nicola Pugno. But self-driving cars, if they one day become popular, would share information with nearby cars to make good use of traffic flow — perhaps, the researchers suggest, by prioritizing(优先考虑)constant speeds or by not passing others on the road. Ants can do numerous things that self-driving can’t Pinter Wollman points out. Ants can create a trail as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck on highways. The insects do sometimes jam up when trapped in tunnels, but to keep things moving, “they’ ll find a way to walk on the ceiling,” she says. Plus, ants don’t crash; they can literally walk over one another. Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants, Nishinari says, “by leaving room between their car and the one ahead, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense traffic conditions that would otherwise be amplified(增强)into a traffic jam.” 12. What enables ants to keep smooth traffic flow even at high densities? A. Central command system. B. Cooperative group interaction. C. Quick speeding-up ability. D. Advanced navigation (导航) tools. 13. How could self-driving cars potentially copy ants’ traffic strategies? A. Road expansion. B. Complete avoidance of braking. C. Inter-vehicle data sharing networks. D. Prioritizing top speed achievement. 14. In which aspect are ants different from self-driving cars? A. Travelling in groups of 3 to 20. B. Traffic rule observation. C. Computer-controlled decision making. D. Flexible navigation and crash avoidance. 15. What would be the most appropriate title for the text? A. The Psychology Behind Human Traffic Congestion. B. Technical Barriers in Autonomous Vehicle Networks. C. Ants vs. Humans: Evolutionary Comparisons. D. Ants’ Amazing Traffic Rules: A Guide for Driverless Cars. B 13. C 14. D 15. 根据第三段中“In a recent study, researchers found that the ants travel in groups of three to twenty that move at nearly constant speeds while keeping distances between one another — and they don’t speed up to pass others.(在最近的一项研究中,研究人员发现,蚂蚁会以3到20只为一组行进,它们以几乎恒定的速度移动,同时保持彼此之间的距离,而且不会加速超过其他蚂蚁。)” 根据第四段中“But self-driving cars, if they one day become popular, would share information with nearby cars to make good use of traffic flow — perhaps, the researchers suggest, by prioritizing constant speeds or by not passing others on the road.(但研究人员表示,如果自动驾驶汽车有朝一日普及开来,它们会与附近汽车共享信息,以充分利用交通流量——或许可以通过优先保持恒定速度或不超车的方式实现。)” 根据第五段中“Ants can create a trail as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck on highways. The insects do sometimes jam up when trapped in tunnels, but to keep things moving, ‘they’ll find a way to walk on the ceiling,’ she says. Plus, ants don’t crash; they can literally walk over one another.(与被困在高速公路上的司机不同,蚂蚁可以开辟任意宽度的行进路线。她说,这些昆虫有时在被困隧道时也会出现拥堵,但为了保持通行,‘它们会想办法爬到隧道顶部行走’。此外,蚂蚁不会发生碰撞,它们真的可以从彼此身上爬过去。)”可知,蚂蚁与自动驾驶汽车的不同之处在于其灵活的通行方式和防撞能力。故选D。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Researchers are studying their cooperative strategies to learn how to program self-driving cars that don’t jam up.(研究人员正在研究它们的协作策略,以探索如何为自动驾驶汽车编写程序,避免交通拥堵。)”以及文章整体内容,尤其是最后一段中引述的观点“Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants, Nishinari says, ‘by leaving room between their car and the one ahead, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense traffic conditions that would otherwise be amplified into a traffic jam.’( Nishinari 指出,如今的司机至少能从蚂蚁身上学到一点:‘在车与前方车辆之间留出空间,司机便能在密集车流中缓冲刹车波,否则这种波动会加剧为交通拥堵。’)” Cloud storage is a flexible and convenient way to store data with complete peace of mind. ____16____This means you can store all your digital things remotely, without taking up space on your computer. A public announcement B Sumi has a daughter named Anna who carries a nickname: “Number 23”. C Anna has improved in study. D. Anna needs to be more confident. 7. Which could be a suitable title for the text? A. Grades: A Mother’s Anxiety B. Anna’s Small Acts of Kindness C. Number 23: The Quiet Hero D. Sumi’s Expectation for Anna C Jeans are usually dyed with indigo But this dark purple-blue dyeing substance doesn’t easily mix into water. A. Its space-saving capability. B. Its little side effect on cloth. C Its efficiency in energy use. D. Its independence from electricity. 11. What do Qvortrup’s words in the last paragraph mainly imply? A. Improving factory equipment helps. B. Using green dye changes everything. C. Developing new dyes requires attention. D. Raising consumer awareness matters. D From an airplane, cars crawling down the highway look like ants. Ants can do numerous things that self-driving can’t, Pinter Wollman points out. Cloud storage is a flexible and convenient way to store data with complete peace of mind. ____16____This means you can store all your digital things remotely, without taking up space on your computer. There are two options available: public cloud storage allows you to share hosting space with other users; private cloud storage is the ideal choice for companies who want to have their data stored in their own environment. ____17____ Once you have registered and set up your account, you simply save your files via the internet using your user name and password. This ensures your data remains secure and inaccessible to anyone else. Should you choose, you can put certain permissions in place, which makes it easy to share your data with your colleagues or your family. When you sign up to cloud storage, you can choose the amount of space you need. ____18____ You can store anything digital: all your files, videos and pictures. Whether you want to use this storage solution to store your family photographs or you want to use it to store your work documentation, you will find it quite convenient. Is it better than your computer or an external drive? The answer is a definite yes. Computers crash all the time. ____19____ External hard drives can still break, or fail. Here you also have the added risk of misplacing it or having it stolen. There are so many advantages to cloud computing, from the ability to access your data from wherever, whenever, to not needing expensive external storage devices. ____20____ A. Cloud storage is very simple to use. B. You will find cloud storage very cheap. C. It enables you to store your data on hosted servers. D. It is the least thing people like to meet during work. E. This is the most common cause of lost work and memories. F. You can start with a small amount and increase the storage size later on. G. The only disadvantage, however, is that you need internet to access files. One afternoon, as I was diving into life’s deeper questions with my students, a thoughtful boy named Jack raised his hand. “Why do so many people feel lost?” he asked. ____21____ their curiosity, I decided to show them the ropes through experience rather than simply ____22____. “Follow me,” I said, leading them toward the nearby ____23____.
