In the lively dining scene of Japan, a unique eatery stands out — not for its fancy recipes or elegant decoration, but for its “imperfect” service. Known as the “Restaurant of Mistaken Orders,” it has redefined what a restaurant can be, carrying a great social mission behind every “mistake.”
Unlike ordinary restaurants where accuracy in orders is a top priority, its waitstaff all have some degree of mental disability, most of whom are people living with dementia (痴呆症). This choice is no accident; it lies at the heart of the restaurant’s founding purpose.
Shiro Oguni, the founder of the restaurant, came up with the idea for it after having a surprising chance meeting with a group home that cares for people with dementia. Initially, Oguni held a negative view of dementia, assuming those affected could barely handle daily tasks. However, after spending time with the residents, he made a surprising discovery: they were capable of many “normal” things, including serving others. Inspired by this, Oguni decided to create a space where they could showcase their abilities and interact with the public.
In the Restaurant of Mistaken Orders, wrong orders are not exceptions — they are common. A customer might order a hamburger steak but get a plate of gyozas (a kind of dumpling); an elderly server may bring a dish no one ordered, or take back a drink just placed on the table. But here’s the twist: the restaurant is never about avoiding mistakes. What truly matters is the interaction between customers and the staff with dementia. Despite the mix-ups, the dining room is always filled with laughter and smiles. Customers readily brush off the wrong orders and even enjoy the unexpected food.
The Restaurant of Mistaken Orders has gained widespread recognition, winning awards like the Silver Lion at the 2019 Cannes Lions. More importantly, it has achieved something far more valuable than fame — it has changed people’s negative perceptions of dementia.
4.What makes the restaurant special?
A.It prioritizes accurate orders. B.It offers fancy and tasty food.

Static (静态的)electricity can remove up to three-quarters of frost from a surface, which could save vast amounts of energy and millions of tons of antifreeze currently used to defrost vehicles.
In 2021, Jonathan Boreyko at Virginia Tech and his colleagues fortunately discovered that frost becomes naturally charged as it forms. They used this natural electric field to charge a nearby film of water that could then, in turn, pull ice grains from the frost, acting as a natural de-icer. This effect, however, was minute and it barely affected the frost as a whole.
Now, Boreyko and his team have developed a more effective defrosting system by using a high-voltage electrode (高压电极)suspended above frost-covered glass. This system can remove half the frost from a surface in around 10 to 15 minutes, and 75 per cent of frost if the surface is also highly water-resistant. “Instead of taking advantage of frost’s pre-existing voltage, we’re trying to enhance the whole effect by applying our own electrical pressure,” says Boreyko.
Removing 50 per cent of frost from a surface using their method required an electrode charged to 550 volts (伏特), more than double the voltage supplied by mains electricity in most countries. Unlike electrical outlets, though, the electrode has a very small current, making it relatively safe. Accidentally touching the electrode would generate an electric shock comparable to an electric fence used on farms. This small current also ensures it requires little energy, less than half the energy it would take to heat the frost directly, says Boreyko.
As well as potentially being used in car windows and on roads, a fast and efficient defrosting method could also be helpful in the airline industry, which uses vast quantities of antifreeze to ensure aeroplane wings are free of ice that might affect flying performance.
“Instead of spreading quantities of antifreeze over an airplane wing to de-ice it when it’s taxiing, you can use this machine. It drives around airport runways with an electric stick and all the ice and snow come right off,” says Boreyko.
8.What was the disadvantage of the defrosting method Boreyko’s team found in 2021?
A.It used too much energy. B.It had almost no real effect.
C.It failed to work on car windows. D.It needed high-voltage equipment.
9.What boosts the new system’s defrosting rate?
A.Higher water resistance. B.Glass surface.
C.Thicker frost layer. D.Lower voltage.
10.What can we infer about the new system’s airline use?
A.It affects flight safety. B.It cuts antifreeze demand.
C.It works best during flight. D.It needs high-voltage runways.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.De-icing Systems for Cars and Planes
B.Static Electricity: A New Defrosting Method
C.High-Voltage Electrodes: Dangers and Risks
D.The Discovery of Frost’s Natural Electric Field

The Library’s Hidden Treasure
Need a quiet place to study or a little guidance with your research? Our campus library has just what you need, and so much more. 12
Mrs. Thompson, the librarian with a warm smile and shining eyes, is always ready to help students find the perfect book or resource for their projects. She moves gracefully between the shelves, her fingers dancing over the book spines (书脊) as she searches for that special one a student needs. 13 As the student takes the book from her hands, she adds, “Let me know if you need any more assistance.” Even when the library is busy with activity during exam week, she remains patient and attentive to each individual’s needs.
14 She often stays late into the evening to ensure everything is in order. “I love seeing the students’ faces light up when they discover something new,” she said. Being a mother of two grown children has taught her the value of patience and understanding, which she applies daily in her role at the library. She believes her purpose is to support and encourage young minds on their educational journey.
One thing Mrs. Thompson may not fully realize is how much her kindness impacts those around her. 15 Lisa Chen, a junior biology major, spends hours studying in the library each week. “She once helped me find a rare reference book that was crucial for my research paper,” Chen recalled. “Her encouragement made all the difference.”
“Working here feels like being part of a big family,” Thompson shared. 16 She
