China’s Shenzhou-19 manned spacecraft was launched (发射) at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on October 30th, 2024. It returned on April 30th, 2025. Among the group of China’s Shenzhou-19 project, the only female (女性的) spaceflight engineer of China, Wang Haoze, may be the one who gets the most attention.
Wang Haoze was born in 1990 in Luanping, Hebei Province. In 2008, she went to Southeast University to study Thermal Energy and Power Engineering (热能与动力工程). She was a great student and continued her studies in graduate school at the same university.
After finishing school in 2015, Wang Haoze started working at the Beijing Aerospace Power Institute (北京航空航天电力研究所), where she helped design rocket engines. Three years later, China began selecting (选拔) the third group of astronauts. Wang Haoze caught the valuable and cool opportunity and signed up.
It was a hard selection process, but she passed all the tests. The training was very challenging. For example, during the centrifuge (离心机) training, which copies the strong forces of a rocket launch, she felt like it was hard to breathe and her lungs hurt a lot. But she didn’t want to be the first to press the emergency stop button, so she held on. She also trained for projects like spacecraft docking (航天器对接). She practiced almost a thousand times to master them. She believed that she could succeed through practising hard and thinking carefully. Her hard work paid off. She became part of the Shenzhou-19 project and got the title of China’s first female spaceflight engineer later. During this project, she took care of space experiments and station supplies. She said she wanted to complete every project well and look after the Chinese “space home” well.
Wang Haoze’s story shows us that with courage and hard work, we can solve our problems and achieve our dreams. Her journey from a small town to space tells us to keep moving forward and never give up.
1. How old is Wang Haoze now?
A. 30. B. 32. C. 34. D. 35.
2. Where did Wang Haoze work before she became an astronaut?
A. At Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. B. In Luanping, Hebei Province.

3. When did China begin selecting the third group of astronauts?
A. In 2008. B. In 2015. C. In 2018. D. In 2025.
4. From paragraph 4, we can know that ________.
A. Wang Haoze thought the selection was very simple and cool, so she signed up.
B. Wang Haoze passed the tests luckily because the training wasn’t very difficult.
C. Wang Haoze thought practising hard and thinking carefully made her succeed.
D. Wang Haoze got the title of China’s first spaceflight engineer in 2024.

Many students face friendship problems at school Here are the stories of three students.
I have a best friend in class. But there’s one thing that bothers (令人烦恼) me a lot. She often goes through my pencil case or schoolbag without asking me, and sometimes borrows my favorite pens or storybooks but forgets to return them. Last week, she took my new eraser and lost it. When I asked, she said, “Don’t worry. It’s just an eraser.” But it’s not only about the eraser. I wish she would respect my things more. I don’t know how to tell her this without hurting our friendship.
—Lei Lei
My deskmate is my good friend, but he has a habit of making jokes that often go too far. He doesn’t pay any attention to how his jokes hurt others. Yesterday during break time, he joked about my new haircut in front of our whole group loudly, saying I looked like a cartoon character. He thought it was funny. Everyone laughed, but my face turned red with embarrassment. He’s always making fun of my grades, my clothes, or even my voice. These jokes really make me hurt. I’ve thought about telling him, but I’m afraid he’ll just laugh it off or think I’m too sensitive (敏感的).

Thirteen-year-old Amy was a student in junior high. Like many of her classmates, she loved bringing food from home to school and talking with her friends happily during lunch time. But she faced a common problem. When the weather was hot, her food often went bad before lunchtime. This was especially true for foods like yogurt and cooked meat. Amy saw that many of her classmates had the same problem, and some even had to throw away their bad food.
Amy was curious about how temperature (温度) affects food. She remembered learning in science class that bacteria grow quickly in warm places and she also knew temperature can change the freshness of food. This knowledge made her think about creating something to keep lunches fresh and safe.
She decided to design a simple thing. People could use this thing again and again to keep lunchboxes cool, and then the food in the lunchboxes could keep fresh for a longer time. Amy’s first idea came from what her grandmother told her—when water evaporates (蒸发), it lowers the temperature, making things cooler. She began trying different materials that could hold water and dry slowly. First, she tested with cloth, but it dried too fast. Then she tried different natural materials (材料) including bamboo and coconut fibers (椰子纤维).
She tried many times and failed again and again. But she never gave up. Finally, she made a special cooling piece from reused plant fibers. People could put the piece in water for five minutes before school. As the water dried during the morning, it would keep the lunchbox cool. Her invention was light and chemical-free. People could use it for months.
When Amy tried her invention with classmates, the results were great. Her science teacher was surprised by how Amy applied science knowledge to solve a daily problem. The school even decided to help her make more cooling pieces for all students who wanted them.
Amy’s invention not only solved a real problem but also helped make less food waste in her school. Her story shows that watching daily life carefully and thinking positively (积极地) can make us invent something useful to help many people.
11. What common problem did Amy notice at first?
A. Talking happily during lunch time was a little noisy.
B. Lots of lunch food often went bad when it was hot.
C. Some students didn’t like yogurt or cooked meat.
D. Many students liked throwing away their lunch.
12. What is the meaning of the underlined word “bacteria”?
A. The heat that comes from the sun on a very hot day.

D. Some chemicals that are used to keep food fresh.
13. Which sentence best supports the idea that Amy’s invention was friendly to the environment?
A. More students paid attention to using science to solve daily problems.
B. Her invention was chemical-free and people could use it for months.
C. The invention was very light and everyone could take it everywhere.
D. The school decided to help her make more cooling pieces for all students.
14. According to the passage, what will most likely happen next?
A. The school will improve Amy’s design to cook food for lunch.
B. Students will take lunch to school only during the cool weather.
C. The school will stop using the invention because it has chemicals.
D. More students will use Amy’s invention to take their lunch to school.

It’s very, very quiet. Not a sound anywhere. Why is it so quiet? Why are there no birds singing?
Oh! Now I can see it. It’s an animal coming through the trees, not quickly, not slowly. It’s a wolf!
There’s only one wolf. Oops! Mother just pushed me because she wants me to move. Now she’s pushing Baby. The family is moving away, going deeper into the forest. Brother doesn’t want to run away, and he’s looking at me. Will I run away?
No, I’m not going to run. It’s stupid. There are four deer and me against just one wolf. We can fight and the wolf will run away.
I’m staying I’ve got a big stick and some stones and I can fight this wolf alone if I have to.
Father has gone. Mother’s coming back for me — no, she isn’t. She’s stopped, she can’t leave Baby.
Brother’s coming to stand with me. Mother and Baby have gone. There’s only Brother, me and the wolf now. I’m not afraid. Let’s see how the wolf likes getting a stone on its nose. Take that!
I missed him! I’m good at throwing stones, but the wolf jumped to one side very fast. Now I’m throwing each stone as hard as I can. The wolf’s jumping all over the place, but he’s not running away. Well, I’ve still got my stick. Brother can use his feet to fight with. We’ll be all right.
Oh no!
Two more wolves are coming, and they’re coming fast. Brother, go! Get out of here! That’s right.
Now I’m alone. There’s only one thing to do.
I nearly died. I made a very big mistake when I decided to stand and fight. That’s what a person does, not a deer. I’m a deer. I smell like a deer and so wolves think I’m a deer too.
I feel bad. I feel small, and unimportant. I’m not a person. I’m just an animal. If another animal is stronger than me, it can kill me. I didn’t understand that before.
I saved Brother; I’m happy about that. The first wolf ran at me, very fast; I suddenly jumped right over him. I’m wonderful at jumping. After two weeks with deer, anybody would be wonderful.
The wolf didn’t turn very quickly. I looked around for the other two wolves and saw that they weren’t coming for me, they were following Brother. This was bad.
I screamed, because I wanted the wolves to think I was afraid; then they would follow me, not Brother. But when I screamed, I knew I really was afraid, and the wolves knew it too. That was terrible. All three wolves stopped and ran straight at me.
Yes, I was afraid! I dropped the stick and ran like a... like a deer. There was a big tree in front of me and in seconds I was at the top of it.

My name is Li Ming. I am good at science and believe achievement means winning competitions. I have a friend called Xiao Wei. He is always curious about inventions that can help others.
Last month, Xiao Wei started spending his free time designing a simple water-cleaning invention for a dirty stream (小溪) in our neighborhood. I thought it was a waste of time. “You should focus on inventing something to win a prize,” I often told him. We argued over this several times, and for a long time, we didn’t talk to each other.
Then, our school held a science fair. I presented a smart model car and won first prize. Xiao Wei’s invention was simple and far from perfect. So he didn’t win any award. However, when he explained how his invention could help clean water for stray (流浪的) animals, the audience gave him warm applause (掌声). I saw the joy and satisfaction (满足) on his face. He didn’t make money or win a prize from his invention, but he lent a hand to those in need.
That day, I realized how selfish I was. I only thought about my own achievement. Xiao Wei’s curiosity and kindness taught me a lot. I have already changed my opinion on what truly matters. Getting along with others isn’t about making them follow our ideas. It’s about understanding and respecting their values.
Now, Xiao Wei and I have worked together for two weeks to improve his invention. I’m using my knowledge to help him, and we have just made some progress.
This experience helped me discover a better part of myself. I have known that helping others can make me happier than winning competitions.

Many students face friendship problems at school. Here are the stories of three students.
—Lin Gang

A. Talking happily during lunch time was a little noisy.
B. Lots of lunch food often went bad when it was hot.
C. Some students didn’t like yogurt or cooked meat.

A. The heat that comes from the sun on a very hot day.
B. Certain kinds of food such as yogurt and meat.
C. Very small living things that can make food go bad.

I’m staying. I’ve got a big stick and some stones and I can fight this wolf alone if I have to.
I’m good at throwing stones but the wolf jumped to one side very fast.
