“Everybody is talented because everybody who is human has something to express,” said American journalist Brenda Ueland. However, sometimes strict teachers or art world could kill creative spark in those who might not meet academic or art world expectations.
From a young age, Emily's parents introduced her to art.Her father took her to worldrenowned galleries in Germany, Italy, or France.Although her father loved and focused on Medieval and religious art, nineyearold Emily was taken aback by the Modern Art.“I would go to the Modern Art section on my own.The paintings were fantastic, and my heart flew looking at them,” said Emily.
Although she loved arts and took creative subjects at school, she never had enough time to dedicate to painting.Only after she completed her Ph.D.in systematic theology (神学) at The University of St.Michael's College in Canada, she found time to paint in 1996.“I was already teaching theology, and I enrolled (报名) in a watercolour class.Once I started, I could not stop,” she said.
Emily works as an independent fundraiser consultant for nonprofit organizations, in addition to her responsibilities as a Fund Developer at Cardinal Felix Foundation. She regularly takes art classes or paints at home, but she packs her colours on every trip.“Painting helps me to get in touch with my true self.It has made my life richer,” she said.
In her painting, she likes to focus on a single object and draw attention to its details.“I like to see what is unique about an object and how it complements its surrounding,” she said.Emily enjoys creating colourful and novel scenes. She ignores remarks of those who follow strict art concepts and who is considered a genuine artist.Emily views art and creativity as a unique language that introduces her to different aspects of life and people.“Art is also my best friend. It is always here for me,” she said.

A new public art program for the people of Iowa City titled Doors Downtown is now accepting applications for artists, and will select winners to paint doorways in downtown alleyways (小巷).
Betsy Potter, the director of Creative Services for the Downtown District said that while the programs do offer a series of projects, artists with some experience are lacking opportunity. To improve that,Iowa City has decided to offer a new public art program—Doors Downtown. “There's one end of the spectrum (范围) and there's another end of the spectrum,so there's no middle ground until now,”Potter said.“Our public art coordinator,Thomas Agran, had been kind of playing around with the idea of that middle ground public art program, and so that's where Doors Downtown came from.”
Doors Downtown provides a chance for artists to take on a project that is larger than BenchMarks, but not as time intensive as a full mural (壁画).The program allows artists to paint doorways in the alleyway behind the Englert Civic Theatre. The installations (大型艺术作品) are planned to be finished by the end of this summer.
“There's already one painted mural on a door in that alleyway and it has brought so much positive attention,”Potter said.Potter said that the Creative Services has been pushing to add more artwork to the alleyways in the area. She said that while many alleyways in other cities are primarily for holding trash (垃圾),the Pedestrian Mall means Iowa City alleyways are walked through frequently.
Because of that,Potter said that Iowa City has chosen to give special attention to the alleyways to make them more inviting.“We've been, you know, doing various initiatives over the years to make them a little bit more friendly and welcoming and safer,”Potter said.“That's why a lot of you see a lot of the murals being done in the alleyways.”

Ⅱ.七选五
Making art is good for your mind and body.Whether it's woodworking, sewing or oil painting, the act of creation can reduce stress and anxiety and improve your mood. But is it hard to make art? 1
You don't need to be an artist with a capital “A”.
We tend to think that only people who are very skilled at art can call themselves artists. But actually, anyone can be an artist. 2 No matter your skill level, you'll be able to feel all the good things that come with making art.
Figure out your mode of creative expression.
Start with what you enjoy, but keep an open mind. 3 You can do that through numerous activities: finger painting, cooking, knitting (编织), etc.— the sky's the limit. And don't feel like you have to stick to one thing.Mix it up — do whatever you're in the mood for.
4
Once you have your art materials, here comes the fun part.Mess around! Let yourself get lost in the process and just play. That brings those feelings of stress relief and positive energy. You don't even need to complete a project or like what you're making to feel those health benefits.Sometimes, when we don't like what we are making, it frees us up to play and explore new ideas, because we have let go of expectations.
Think about making art like any healthy habit, such as eating well or exercising.
Just as you make time to work, exercise and hang out with family and friends, you should make time for your artistic practice. 5
A.Everyone is able to express creatively.
B.Making art is good for your mind and body.
C.Focus on the making, and let go of expectations.
D.And don't feel like you have to stick to one thing.
E.Anything that engages your creative mind is good for you.
