A
I have a rule for travel: never carry a map. I prefer to ask for directions. Today I would like to talk about the way of asking for directions in different countries with you. Foreign visitors are often puzzled (困惑的) in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the country of the American Midwest, there are usually not many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat. In many places, there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will use miles to tell you directions and distances. In Kansas, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.” People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of the distance on the map. They measure (测量) distance by telling time. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.
People in Mexico never answer “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan (尤卡坦半岛) think that “I don’t know” is not polite. They usually give a wrong answer. A visitor can easily get lost in Yucatan! One thing will help you everywhere. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction. Go in that direction, and you may find the post office!

B.The American Midwest.

34.What will probably happen in Yucatan when a visitor asks for directions?
A.The visitor will find the place quickly.
B.The visitor will get lost.
C.The local people will send the visitor to the place.
D.The visitor will lose money.
35.Which of the following sentences is NOT true?
A.Travelers can learn about customs (习俗) in different countries by asking for directions.

People in different countries have different understandings of craftsmanship.
For many people, products made in Germany are believed to be well-built and durable (耐用的)。The high quality of the products depends largely on the craftsman spirit of German people, who are serious and strive for perfection. Quality is the life of products, and is closely related to the workers. Thus, they pay great attention to technology and work ethic.
In Japan, when it comes to craftsmanship, people tend to see their work as their first duty and remain loyal. The advantage of Japanese production lies in continued learning and creating. Japanese love the work they do, work hard and try their best to do it perfectly.
In China, craftsmanship can be traced back to the “art apprentice (学徒) system” in ancient times. Masters taught apprentices skills and passed on the spirit of being hard-working, creative and dedicated through words and deeds. Now, Chinese people still carry forward craftsmanship and strive for excellence.

A. good好的(原级);B. better更好的(比较级);C. bad糟糕的(原级);D. worse更糟糕的(比较级)。
根据“His book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake ... a love of traveling among Chinese people! (他的书《徐霞客游记》激发了中国人对旅行的热爱!)”可知,他的书应该是起到了激发人们对旅行的热爱的作用,“encouraged a love of traveling”表示“激发了对旅行的热爱”。故选A。

Xu’s father died and so did his traveling dreams.
A. education教育;B. behavior行为;C. experiences经历;D. journey旅行。

A
I have a rule for travel: never carry a map.

D.using landmarks
33.In which place do people tell distance by telling time?
A.Japan.
B.The American Midwest.
C.Los Angeles, California.
D.Mexico.
