Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
In the third grade, tenyearold Jane read a book about poaching (偷猎) the endangered tigers and cutting down forests at will. She told her friend Holt about it and she really wanted to help save the tigers.
Despite being in elementary school, the two girls have organized fundraisers(资金筹集).During their first year, the girls raised $1,500 to save tigers. “We went to a zoo and asked if we could help and it became this huge fun thing. We never expected it to get so big,” the girls said.
When Jane and Holt pitched their ideas in the zoo to ask for funds, their table was packed with zoo guests all afternoon. This year's goal is $2,500. Whatever they raise will be matched by the Zoological Society and all be donated(捐赠) to the Tiger Protection Fund.
On top of helping the animal, the girls would also be excited about their names to be proudly posted at the zoo's entrance on a sign with other donors. “If we get our names on it, it's going to feel like being famous, and it's going to be like a dream come true for us,” Jane said. They said they were close to their goal and the zoo couldn't be happier.
“Their awareness of what's happening to tigers and their wanting to educate people on what's happening to tigers are unbelievable,” Kassner, an animal expert, said. “Three kinds of tigers have already died out and the remaining six are all endangered. The ‘Tiger Girls’ are bringing a big and positive effect and won't be stopping anytime soon.”
“I'm so happy that we've come this far. We can do this now though we're only fifth graders and just imagine what we can do in the future,” Holt said.

In the deep seas lives one of the most misunderstood creatures:the shark. From Steven Spielberg's “Jaws” to news of shocking shark attacks, these wonderful animals have been seen as sea threats.
Countries like South Africa and Australia have put money into technologies such as shark nets and drum lines to protect swimmers from attacks. While reducing risks, these methods do great harm by killing sharks and other marine (海洋的) creatures, including turtles, dolphins and whale calves.
Marine scientist Sara Andreotti has been focusing on studying and protecting sharks. Realizing that shark numbers are sharply dropping and driven by the necessity to find a solution to

protect both humans and marine life, she and her team developed a technology:the SharkSafe Barrier (屏障) (SSB).
The SSB successfully copies the visual effects of a thick kelp forest (浓密海藻森林的视觉效果), which sharks generally avoid so as not to get trapped, and uses a series of permanent magnetic stimuli (永磁刺激物) to form a barrier that stops sharks from passing through. And there is no danger to other marine life. The SSB allows other fish and animals to swim through, and boats can also freely pass through the barrier.
Early tests showed promising results. In 2021, the World Economic Forum's online innovation platform UpLink recognized the SSB as one of the leading solution providers for the protection of marine environments. In May 2023, it became part of the Conservation International (CI) Ventures portfolio. CI Ventures is now providing funding of US $250,000 to support pilot projects focused on testing the technology on different sea substrates (基底) and conditions.
The SSB which can protect both people and sharks clears the way for safer beaches without causing unnecessary harm. “I hope that shark nets and drum lines will become history. This technology can hopefully create a future where people and sharks can both enjoy the seas and promote shark public awareness, education and protection,” says Andreotti.
