In 2008, a big wildfire called the Freeway Complex Fire broke out in Orange County. Friedrich and her husband had to act quickly to save animals from the fire. They roped pigs and helped guide frightened horses into trailers to move them to safety. They should have rescued (营救) all their neighbors’ horses, but the fire was getting closer.
That experience made Friedrich realize that there wasn’t a good rescue plan in place. In response, horse owners in Orange County formed the Large Animal Rescue Team (LART) in 2008. The group helped save horses and other animals from wildfires. Friedrich joined the team in 2009.
However, because of limited resources and fewer volunteers, the group recently decided to only operate within San Juan Capistrano, the city where it is based. This means that horse owners in nearby areas, like Yorba Linda, will no longer have support during fires. This decision has caused concern among people who live outside the city.
The idea of a local animal rescue team is not unique to Orange County, but this is the first time an organization has reduced its coverage in this way. In the past, volunteers traveled from different areas to help during emergencies (紧急情况). Now, that support is limited.
Although LART was praised for its success in rescuing animals, during one fire, there were problems with communication, which caused delays (延迟). The county recognized the team’s hard work during the 2020 fire season, but there were still issues with how the rescue efforts were managed.
With fewer volunteers, LART would no longer manage the program after January 1. Orange County has not yet shown interest in taking over the program. “For now, local horse owners are turning to other strategies (策略) and working to be prepared for emergencies. We understand that it’s important to be ready before fires strike,” says Friedrich.
4. How did the experience in 2008 affect Friedrich?
A. She gave up efforts to rescue wild animals. B. She realized the need for a better rescue plan.
C. She sold all the pigs and horses on her farm. D. She dropped out of a local animal rescue team.
5. Why did LART decide to operate only within San Juan Capistrano?
A. It was short of hands. B. It wasted much money in a fire rescue.
C. Neighboring areas had similar rescue teams. D. Fire risks in other areas had greatly been reduced.
6. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The new goals LART will set. B. The achievements LART made.
C. The problems facing LART. D. The national support for LART.
7. What have local horse owners probably been doing according to Friedrich?
A. Providing food for families in need. B. Waiting for the rescue team to return.
C. Holding activities to train volunteers. D. Looking for other solutions to wildfires.

English learners should not think that mistakes, or errors, are bad. One American language expert, Alex Poole, advises that language learners should instead see errors as signs of progress. Alex Poole is a professor of English and department head of modern languages at Western Kentucky University.
One common problem is that English learners think too much about errors instead of communication. “The goal is to be able to communicate in practical terms. If you have an error, the only time you should worry about it is if it causes communication failure,” Poole said.
Poole has some useful ideas about ways English learners can use errors. When you are speaking with a native English speaker, there are two kinds of things you can do to look for errors, Poole said. The first is to look for misunderstanding or other signs of confusion (困惑). For example, perhaps a person gives an unusual reaction to something you said. You can then ask him directly what the problem is. The second works if you know a native speaker well. You can ask him about the kinds of things you say that could cause communication problems with other native speakers.
When it comes to writing, Poole recommends, thinking about errors in a different way. He suggests keeping a list of common errors. These might include mistakes with subject-verb agreement, prepositions (介词) or articles. When English learners write something, Poole recommends that they think about the main ideas first. Then, he recommends thinking about how to put those ideas in order. Instead of thinking about grammar, he suggests you should think about the big picture of what you are writing about. After you write something, you can go back and use your list to look for errors.
8. When should English learners worry about a mistake according to Poole?
A. When they write a letter. B. When they give a speech.
C. When they fail to communicate. D. When they talk with a native speaker.
9. How is paragraph 3 developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By telling stories. D. By making comparisons.
10. What should English learners consider first while writing in Poole’s opinion?
A. Good order. B. Main ideas. C. Grammar rules. D. Common errors.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Correcting Grammar Errors with a List B. Writing Down Ideas without Any Error
C. Worrying about Communication Errors D. Looking on Errors in a Different Way
D
Recent winter storms have brought heavy rain and snow to California. This increase in snowpack has delayed the start of the wildfire season. Experts believe the fire season may be milder than usual, but conditions could change by July.
For now, fire activity in Southern California is expected to be below normal in May and June, while Northern California is likely to have an average fire season. Statewide, the wet season has been longer than usual, and more rain and snow may continue into April or early May. Lower elevations (海拔) are green and wet, while higher elevations are covered in snow.
The deeper the snowpack, the longer it takes to melt (融化). This slows down the drying of vegetation and delays warm weather. In years with above-average snowpack, Northern California has seen fewer acres burned. However, climate change is affecting fire patterns (模式). Fires are now reaching higher elevations where snow once prevented them. Some areas have fewer trees to protect snow from the sun, causing faster melting and shifting the risk from floods to droughts.
Rising temperatures are also pushing the snow line higher, making forests more likely to burn in summer. Some desert regions, which received extra rain, have grown more grass. Once these dry out by late spring, they could fuel wildfires, like the York Fire — the state’s largest fire in 2023.
Additionally, winds play a key role in spreading wildfires. Forecasters expect fewer strong offshore winds, partly due to El Niño. However, sudden weather changes could still lead to major fires. Dry lightning, unexpected heat or rapid shifts in rainfall can turn a mild fire season into a severe one.
Within this long-term change, research suggests that burned areas in California could grow by 50% from 2031 to 2050 due to climate change. While some years may see fewer fires, overall, rising temperatures and drier conditions are making wildfires more common.
12. What does the underlined word “delayed” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Referred to. B. Sped up. C. Put off. D. Longed for.
13. What can we know from paragraph 2?
A. Forest fires always hit California in early May.
B. The wet season is likely to last for a short time.
C. It has been years since California saw heavy rain.
D. California expects a late start to the wildfire season.
14. Why does the author mention the York Fire in 2023?
A. To remind us to stop human error.
B. To show the danger of the dry grass.
C. To explain it hardly rains in the desert.
D. To sound the alarm about global warming.
15. What does research suggest about California wildfires?
A. Their likelihood will largely increase.
B. They will probably drop by 50% in 2031.
C. It takes time to put them under control.
D. They are mainly caused by human activities.

In our childhood, there were always unforgettable things happening in our life. However, some were harmful while some were beneficial. If we could learn from the experience and lessons, it would lead to future success.
My 12th birthday came at last. What a wonderful feeling it was to know that I turned twelve and that I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box wrapped up (包装) with nice pink paper with flowers on it. When I removed the paper and opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had got a cell phone I ran to give my mom and dad the biggest hug ever, and said,
“You’ re welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy. But we give you this not only because you have turned twelve but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades.”
I said confidently that I would. As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts (联系人) on the first day. It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class any more. I didn’t pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. I texted my friends, surfed the Internet for stories or played games.
Luckily, I didn’t get caught using it. I had formed a habit of secretly enjoying my phone in class. But I was pretty sure that the teachers did notice that I stopped paying attention to them, because a week later we took a test and I failed. What’s worse, my parents had to sign the test.

Dear Peter,

First of all, you had better book your hotel ahead of time. Secondly, you may rent a local car in order to save time and visit more places of interest. Last but not least, it’s wise of you to have a guide to show you around Tai’an and introduce more details, which will make your trip more interesting and benefit you a lot.
If you have any more questions, please call me. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

【答案】 After getting home, I was afraid to face my parents but I had to. After looking through the test result, I had thought that they would scold me heavily. However, I was completely wrong. They asked me about the reason for which I failed the test. I didn’t dare to tell a lie, and told them it was the phone they had bought for me that led to my poor scores. When figuring out the cause, they said, “We truly believe in you. We hope you can learn from this failure, change your old ways, and really strive to be a better student. Success will be yours.”
After what happened, I decided to change everything I used to do. Firstly, I handed in my phone to my parents and came home early right after school every day. Once I finished my homework, I’d help my parents with some housework. I hardly used my phone any more. Then in class, I’d listen carefully as before. Gradually, my school performance improved and I got good grades again.
