A high school math teacher at St. Mary’s Academy in New Orleans, Michelle Blouin-Williams, set a school-wide math contest with a challenging bonus question. That bonus question asked students to create a new proof for the Pythagorean theorem (勾股定理), a fundamental principle of geometry, using trigonometry (三角学), which had been believed to be impossible for nearly 2,000 years.
In December 2022, Calcea Johnson and Ne’Kiya Jackson, seniors at St. Mary’ s Academy, stepped up to the challenge. The $500 prize money was a motivating factor. After months of work, they submitted their proofs to their teachers. With the contest behind them, their teachers encouraged the students to present at a mathematics conference, and then to seek to publish their work. Amazingly, despite their impressive achievements, they insisted they were not math geniuses. When they set out to create a new Pythagorean theorem proof, they didn’t know that for thousands of years, one using trigonometry was thought to be impossible.
Calcea and Ne’Kiya had studied geometry and some trigonometry when they started working on their proofs, but they said they didn’t feel math was easy. As the contest went on, they spent almost all their free time developing their ideas. “The garbage can was full of paper. If that didn’t work, she would throw it in the trash,” Cal Johnson, Calcea’s. dad, said. Neliska Jackson, Ne’ Kiya’s mother, said that most of the time, her daughter’s work was beyond her work.
To document their work, math teachers at St. Mary’s Academy submitted their proofs to an American Mathematical Society conference in Atlanta. “Our teacher approached us and asked us to actually present this,” Ne’Kiya said. “I was like, ‘Are you joking?’ But she wasn’t. So we went, got up there and presented and it went well, and it blew up.
Last year when Ne’Kiya and Calcea graduated, they entered universities. Now in the universities, they’ve been working on further proofs of the Pythagorean theorem and believe they have found five more proofs. However, neither one is pursuing a career in math. “People might expect too much out of me if I become a mathematician,” Ne’Kiya said.
4. Why did Ne’Kiya and Calcea take up the challenge?
A. They were talented in math. B. They were attracted by the prize.
C. They thought it wasn’t that hard. D. They were inspired by their parents.
5. What can we know about Ne’Kiya and Calcea?
A. They did well in study in middle school.
B. They were aiming to make history.
C. They learnt much from their teachers.
D. They had some academic foundation about math.
6. How was Ne’Kiya and Calcea’s presentation at the conference?
A. Interesting. B. Complicated. C. Successful. D. Imperfect.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Two Students Solved A 2,000-year Math Puzzle
B. Trigonometry Can Prove The Pythagorean Theorem
C. Two Geniuses Have Proven The Pythagorean Theorem
D. A Teacher Pushed Students To Create New Proofs

In order to learn about advanced scientific technology and ideas for fighting against desertification (沙漠化), Rezaali Pakzad left Iran to study in Northwest China’s Gansu province. He is a 27-year-old doctoral student at Lanzhou University, focusing on soil desertification control.
In his view, Iran, like many countries, faces environmental problems such as desertification. When he did field surveys and research in Minqin county, Gansu, he found that the local desertification characteristics were very similar to those of his hometown. “Minqin is between two deserts. From being ‘about to disappear’to being gradually green, the scientific and effective prevention and control methods of the Chinese government have greatly changed the county, and made me see the hope of improving the ecology in my hometown,” he says.
He believes that China has certainly contributed to the global effort to combat desertification, and that the Chinese contribution is worth learning from. Through in-depth research in recent years, he has learned a lot about China’s new technologies and new ideas for combating desertification.
China has developed advanced technology models, which have introduced more green to deserts. Already among the top nations in the world in the field of combating desertification, China has shared its experience with other countries, carried out international consociation, and contributed to global desertification control.
Rezaali also believes he has made progress during his five years of living and studying in China. He hopes to achieve a lot, at a high level, in his research field and to contribute to international exchanges and cooperation in desertification control. “I want to be an ‘ecological messenger’ by spreading green ideas,” he says.
8. What is the similarity between Minqin and Rezaali’s hometown?
A. Ways to fight desertification.
B. The features of desertification.
C. The progress made in preventing desertification.
D. The technology used in controlling desertification.
9. What’s Rezaali’s attitude towards China’s methods of combating desertification?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Objective
10. What does the underlined word “consociation” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Contract. B. Cooperation. C. Commitment. D. Contribution.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. He advocates an international lifestyle.
B. He wants to major in ecology in China.
C. He will promote ecological protection.
D. He is satisfied with what he has achieved.
D
A handful of small animal and human studies prove that consuming dairy products like milk and cheese before bed may help most people have a more restful night’s sleep, though the reason why remains unclear.
Most experts believe that milk promoting sleep may be related to chemical compounds, the mental effects of this relaxed bedtime habit, or both.
Most experts agree that milk’s sleep-promoting possibility is likely related to specific chemical compounds, such as tryptophan (色氨酸)and melatonin (褪黑素)in milk which may help you fall asleep. Because the role of tryptophan and melatonin in sleep disorders is well established, most experts believe taking supplements of these compounds may reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression that can crop up at bed time.
However, there’s currently no evidence to suggest that a single glass of milk contains enough tryptophan or melatonin to significantly influence your body’s natural production of elements which help a person fall asleep fast or to independently treat a disordered sleeping pattern.
Some professors, such as Clinten in Boston University, draw a theory and suspect that milk’s potential role as a sleep aid has little to do with its nutritional composition and that it’s instead more closely related to the mental effect of having a calming bedtime habit.
Another theory is that drinking warm milk could subconsciously remind you of having milk at bedtime during your early childhood years. These soothing feelings may signal to your brain that it’s time to sleep, making it easier to fall asleep peacefully.
Still, there is not enough evidence to definitely prove any particular effects of developing a habit of drinking milk before bedtime, so more research is needed.
12. What can we know about the viewpoint that milk can promote sleep?
A. Milk can only help animals fall asleep quickly.
B. The reason why drinking milk can promote sleep has been found.
C. Everyone can fall asleep faster by drinking milk before going to sleep.
D. The tryptophan and melatonin in milk may promote healthy sleep cycles.
13. According to the theory, Clinten thinks drinking milk before bedtime can .
A Release nutritional composition.
B. Add more anxiety and depression.
C. Imply oneself that you should go to bed now with ease.
D. Continue to develop the habit of drinking just like in your childhood.
14. Who is the intended readers?
A. Tradesman who supply milk. B. People who suffer from wakefulness.
C. Professors in Boston University. D. Children with a disordered sleeping habits.
15 What is the author’s attitude towards the effects of the milk before bedtime?
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Negative.

Some pals and I were in the midst of a pinball competition at a bar the other night when the machine kept breaking down. We called over a very busy employee who’s responsible for helping keep the place running. He put everything aside to fix our problematic pinball machine twice. ____16____ A couple of the guys immediately objected, saying the employee was just doing the job he was paid to do. I insisted and got the group to agree to the plan, although somewhat reluctantly.
My pinball fix er didn’t stretch out his hand, but how many times have we run across those payment screens that suggest a 20% tip for being handed a sandwich we ordered? ____17____ There is data to back up the trend: 66% of American adults have a negative view of tipping, and 32% say they’re sick of those payment-screen hints, according to a recent Bankrate survey.
____18____ I admit there are times I suspect the tipping thing has gone too far — say, when I’m at a self-checkout line and there’s still request to leave something extra. But I’m generally willing to err on the side of caution: If someone is expecting a tip, I’ll assume they have financial reasons to do so. ____19____
Plus, tipping is good karma (因果报应). It’s always worth it to tip in unexpected situations — ones that don’t necessarily involve a hint on a payment screen. ____20____ He was so grateful for the $10 tip that later that night, he rewarded our group with well more than $10 in free tokens (代金券) for future play.
So next time, there must be no arguments with my friends when times come to tip.
A. This leads to what’s been called “tipping fatigue”.
B. So, why am I willing to go against the trend and say yes?
C What is the underlying reason behind this growing trend?
D. I suggested we tip him $10 and split the tip among all of us.
E. Guess what happened next with my pinball-machine fixer at the bar?
F. One dollar or two won’t make or break me, but it can possibly help with their rent.
G. If they earn far below the minimum wage, employers must make up the difference.

I was taking a trip from Texas to the Bahamas for a vacation, having prepared for this trip for a long time. After packing all my belongings and heading to the airport, I could only think about all the pleasant times I would have at the tropical(热带)island. I already had everything planned out, first I would go diving, then visit the queen’s stairs, and eventually go swimming with the dolphins. The thoughts made my heart race; I could even smell the fresh ocean breeze right now.
Finally, I made it into the airport, just in time to make my flight. As I boarded the plane, I had a smile stretched along my face. I slid right into my seat, sitting mid row right in the middle of two other passengers. One of them was a fairly attractive young female and the other was an elderly lady who looked to be in her 70s. Her hair was as gray as a thunderstorm cloud and the wrinkles on her skin matched the ones on my shirt.
“We should depart in about five minutes,” The pilot responded. At that time, I had no idea what was soon incoming after this announcement. I used to fly with my mom a whole bunch of times as a kid, the people beside me seeming to be taking it well as well.
I went to sleep and woke up to various screaming and yelling on the plane; everything was so chaotic that it looked straight out of a movie scene. The lights in the airplane started flickering(闪烁), and I could feel the bumps the plane was making. Was I still dreaming? I looked to my left and the seat was empty! Sweat started to run down my face. The young female was gone!
“Mommy!” A little girl screamed. I couldn’t control it anymore and tears started rolling down my face. The plane shook more, seeming the end was nearing.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are experiencing an extreme clear air turbulence(乱流),” the pilot explained. “The plane is being adjusted. Please remain seated.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右。
2. 按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The pilot tried to take control of the situation at hand, but in vain(徒劳).

【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. B

A. Release nutritional composition.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the effects of the milk before bedtime?
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Negative.

【16题详解】
根据上文“Some pals and I were in the midst of a pinball competition at a bar the other night when the machine kept breaking down. We called over a very busy employee who’s responsible for helping keep the place running. He put everything aside to fix our problematic pinball machine twice.(前几天晚上,我和几个朋友在一家酒吧里进行弹珠台比赛,但机器总是出故障。于是我们叫来了一位非常忙碌的员工,他是负责维持酒吧正常运营的。他两次放下手头的工作,来修理我们那台出问题的弹珠台)”以及后文“A couple of the guys immediately objected, saying the employee was just doing the job he was paid to do. I insisted and got the group to agree to the plan, although somewhat reluctantly.(有几个人立刻提出了反对意见,他们认为这名员工只是在履行他所受雇应尽的职责。但我坚持自己的观点,并最终说服了大家同意这个计划,尽管大家还是有些不太情愿)”可知,上文提到了叫来了维修工维修弹珠台,后文说明“有几个人立刻提出了反对意见”,推测本句是在说明作者的提议,故D选项“我提议我们给他 10 美元小费,然后大家分摊这笔小费。”符合语境,故选D。
【17题详解】
根据上文“My pinball fix er didn’t stretch out his hand, but how many times have we run across those payment screens that suggest a 20% tip for being handed a sandwich we ordered?(我的那位弹球游戏爱好者并没有伸手付款,但我们又曾多少次遇到过那种支付界面,上面会提示我们为收到的那份我们点的三明治支付20%的小费呢?)”以及后文“There is data to back up the trend: 66% of American adults have a negative view of tipping, and 32% say they’re sick of those payment-screen hints, according to a recent Bankrate survey.(有数据可以证明这一趋势:根据贝克瑞特银行近期的一项调查,66%的美国成年人对给小费持负面看法,而32%的人表示已经厌倦了那些支付界面的提示信息)”可知,后文提到了“66%的美国成年人对给小费持负面看法,而32%的人表示已经厌倦了那些支付界面的提示信息”,推测本句主要说明提示付小费导致了人们的厌烦现象。故A选项“这就导致了所谓的“小费疲劳”。符合语境,故选A。
【18题详解】
根据后文“I admit there are times I suspect the tipping thing has gone too far — say, when I’m at a self-checkout line and there’s still request to leave something extra. But I’m generally willing to err on the side of caution: If someone is expecting a tip, I’ll assume they have financial reasons to do so.(我承认有时候我会怀疑这种给小费的做法有些过头了——比如,当我在自助结账通道排队时,对方还要求额外留下一些钱。但总体来说,我还是倾向于谨慎行事:如果有人期待得到小费,那我就会认为他们这么做是有经济上的原因的)”可知,本段主要是作者在分析自己给小费的原因,本句针对后文的原因给出设问句,故B选项“那么,为什么我会违背常规,同意给他这笔钱呢?”符合语境,故选B。
【19题详解】
根据上文“But I’m generally willing to err on the side of caution: If someone is expecting a tip, I’ll assume they have financial reasons to do so.(但总体来说,我还是倾向于谨慎行事:如果有人期待得到小费,那我就会认为他们这么做是有经济上的原因的)”可知,上文提到作者给小费是因为认为对方需要这笔钱,本句为本段最后一句,承接上文,具体说明作者给小费的动机,故F选项“一两美元不会决定我的经济状况是好是坏,但这或许能帮他们付点房租。”符合语境,故选F。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Plus, tipping is good karma (因果报应). It’s always worth it to tip in unexpected situations — ones that don’t necessarily involve a hint on a payment screen.(此外,给小费也是一种因果报应。在任何意想不到的情况下给小费都是值得的——即便这些情况并不一定是在支付界面有提示的情况下发生的)”以及后文“He was so grateful for the $10 tip that later that night, he rewarded our group with well more than $10 in free tokens (代金券) for future play.(他对于那10美元的小费感激不尽。当晚,他便用远超10美元的免费筹码作为回报,赠予我们整个团队用于日后的游戏消费)”可知,后文提到了对10美元的小费感激不尽,推测本句是在引出后文修理工对小费的反应话题。故E选项“那么,酒吧里的那个弹球机维修工接下来又发生了什么?”符合语境,故选E。

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Eventually, all the passengers calmed down.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
The pilot tried to take control of the situation at hand but in vain(徒劳). The passengers were in a state of great panic, including the young female. So scared was she that she screamed “I’m going to die,” making others more panicked. At that time, the elderly lady on my right spoke out, “Anyone not wearing a seat belt is putting you at a higher risk. We should have a firm belief in the crew, rather than cause disturbance and inconvenience,” which won some passengers’ approval. More passengers began to be well organized automatically, arranging everything in order.
Paragraph 2:
Eventually all the passengers calmed down. They returned to their seats quickly, keeping the seat belts fastened. I held hands with the female and the elderly lady. A sense of comfort and warmth rushed over me. After what seemed to be a century, the plane eventually turned normal. All the people cheered up. Experiencing turbulence on board can be frightening, just as life is filled with unexpected incidents. As long as we keep calm and optimistic, we will have enough power to overcome obstacles.(162w)
