Fly-in programs offer a unique opportunity for potential students to experience campus life firsthand. These programs, typically sponsored by the institution, are designed for students from minority backgrounds who may not be able to afford a visit to campus on their own.
Fly-in programs provide an immersive campus experience, making universities and colleges accessible for students in advance. They remove financial barriers to visits and offer application and financial aid workshops. Additionally, participants build valuable connections with peers, students, and staff, gaining support throughout the admissions process and beyond.

After immigrating to the United States from the West Indies in 1901 19-year-old Bob Douglas found a job as a doorman in New York City. One day, a co-worker took him to visit an upstairs basketball court, and he was stunned by the athletic skills on display. Inspired by that moment, Douglas was determined to create a basketball team — the New York Renaissance — which was the first Black-owned, all-Black professional basketball team at that time.
Needing a practice spot for his team, Douglas sought casino (赌场) owner William Roach’s permission to use the dance floor before late-night dancing, offering to cover team costs and bear all financial risk. Besides, the team had to travel the country playing any opponent that would agree to schedule them to go through two financial failures. They repeatedly encountered discrimination and racial violence, such as fistfights with white players and fans. The players were often banned from hotels and restaurants on the road. A basketball historian, Dick Engleberg said. “A lot of times they stayed in jails because that was the safest place they could stay.”
No matter the obstacle, the Rens just kept winning. In 1925, the Rens shocked the world by defeating the Original Celtics, the most dominant all-white team of their day. During the 1932-33 season, the Renaissance won 88 straight games, a professional basketball record that remains unbroken.
The Rens began to decline as its players got older and the tens of thousands of miles of traveling took its toll, but in time, they were recognized for the important role they played in advancing black athletes in basketball. Douglas, who had owned and coached the Rens for their entire 25-year run, has been today known as the “Father of Black Professional Basketball,” which ensures that although the Rens isn’t a household name, their legacy will never be forgotten.
4. What motivates Douglas to establish the team?
A. The financial support he received.
B. The impressive athletic skills he saw.
C. His concern with the jobs for Black people.
D. His desire to become a famous basketball coach.
5. What can we know from Engleberg’s words?
A. The team chose jails to save money.
B. Jails can provide basketball training facilities.
C. The players were arrested for fighting with fans.
D. The team could only find accommodation in jails.
6. What does the underlined phrase mean in the last paragraph?
A. Gained more fans. B. Caused great losses.
C. Discouraged the players. D. Boosted team performance.
7. What can best describe Douglas?
A. Careful and humble. B. Strict and disciplined.
C Tolerant and dynamic. D. Determined and responsible.

Is text-messaging driving us apart? These days, we talk to each other a lot with our thumbs — sending six billion text messages a day, and likely a few billion more on services like Whats App.
But some worry that so much messaging leads to less communication. For instance, when hanging out with friends, we’d be texting secretively at the same time, pretending to maintain eye contact but mentally somewhere else.
New technologies often upset the way we relate to one another, of course. But such division caused by texting has a strong echo in the arguments we had over telephone a hundred years ago. The small device gave us a new way to contact one another and quickly promote new forms of socializing. Callers arranged regular “visiting” calls, dialing remote family to catch up on news.
Soon, though, social critics thought it would be so easy to talk that we’d never leave each other alone. Others worried that the telephone sped up life, demanding instant reactions. The use of the telephone gave little room for reflection. It produced a craziness in the ordinary concerns of life which didn’t make for domestic happiness. “We shall soon be nothing but transparent piles of jelly (果冻) to each other,” a London writer moaned in 1897.
However, nowadays the telephone call seems like a throwback to a gentler era. When Jenna Birch, a communication professor at the University of Iowa, started dating a man who insisted on calling her on the phone, she found it warm and delightful. So she doesn’t think the shift to texting has degraded our interactions. According to her study, teenagers who text the most are also those who spend the most time face to face with friends. Communication, it seems, brings more communication, and — as she argues — just because talk happens in text doesn’t mean it’s not meaningful.
Michéle Martin of Carleton University, thinks we’re living through a replay of the telephone, where the things that made it valuable — instant communications — are the same that made it annoying. “People believe they are liberated because they can bring the mobile phone everywhere,” Martin says. “But at the same time, they are slaves to it.”
8. What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To describe a scene.
C. To offer an argument. D. To issue a warning.
9. According to paragraph 4, what does telephone use cause?
A. People experience very tight schedule. B. People tend to lack individuality.
C. People become narrow and uninformed. D. People lose the ability to reflect.
10. What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A. Telephone calls are particularly welcomed in dating.
B. Teenagers are addicted to communicating by texting.
C. The shift to texting is destructive to face-to-face time.
D. The meaning of communication goes beyond medium.
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Oh My God! We’ve Been Here Before! B. Gone with the Wind, Dear Texting!
C. Life is Too Short for So Many Texting. D. Oh, Telephone, a Tale of Two Sides.
D
Bathing in the sun has been considered a health hazard for at least four decades. It mainly comes from ultraviolet (UV) light, which the Sun emits alongside visible radiation. The risks UV poses are real, but a new research suggests it may be time to consider the benefits. According to a study published recently in Health and Place, increased UV exposure appears to make people significantly less likely to die of cardiovascular (心血管) disease as well as cancer.
To conduct their analysis, the researchers from the University of Edinburgh used data from over 360,000 people in the UK Biobank, a database. They identified two groups more likely to have high UV exposure: those who claimed to use sunbeds or sunlamps; and those living in sunnier locations. To check that their assumptions about the subjects’ UV exposure were correct, the scientists also looked at vitamin D levels in a subset of blood samples. As vitamin D is synthesised in the skin in the presence of certain forms of UV radiation, it is a reliable indicator of solar exposure.
Their analysis showed that sunbed-users were 23% less likely to die of cardiovascular disease, and 14% less likely to die of cancer, than non-users. Similar trends held depending on where people lived. Sunbed-users, in other words, lived an average of 48 days longer than non-users over the 15 years during which they were studied.
The exact mechanism whereby UV light might lengthen lives is unknown. The authors believe part of the explanation may lie in vitamin D’s competence in boosting the immune system and improving bone health. They also point to nitric oxide (NO,一氧化氮), a powerful blood-vessel widener capable of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. A prior research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology showed that NO is released in skin cells that have moderate exposure to some UV radiation, and sunlight helps move it into the circulatory systems. But for now, experts agree the study is not a licence to stop wearing sun cream.
12. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
A. By giving examples. B. By defining a concept.
C. By providing a long-held opinion. D. By making comparison.
13. What is employed to measure UV exposure?
A. The locations of living. B. The length of sunbathing.
C. The frequency of sunbathing. D. The level of vitamin D in blood.
14. Which mechanism is a possible way UV exposure lengthens life?
A. Reducing bone density. B. Moving the circulatory system.
C. Restricting the immune system. D. Releasing NO to widen blood vessels.
15. Which of the following is the best title for this article?
A. Sunbathing: Risking Our Skin. B. UV Exposure: Benefits or Not?
C. Sun Cream: A cure for UV Exposure. D. Vitamin D: A Way to Lengthen Lifespan?

This time, Mira wasn’t asking the AI to polish her essays. Instead, she typed a question that had been pressing on her heart for weeks: “Why won’t Grandma eat properly?”
It was early January. After finishing her exams, Mira had returned to her hometown to spend some quiet days with her grandmother. The old woman had once been a legend — she’d worked as a tailor (裁缝), made dresses for half the village and saved enough to open her own shop.
Time had taken its toll. Now her eyesight had dimmed, her fingers trembled, but she was still that legendary woman who lived on her own terms. Whenever someone ladled (用勺子舀) soup into her bowl, she would push it away, murmuring, “I don’t need it. Save it for yourselves.” Every meal played out the same way. It broke Mira’s heart.
Actually, the family was doing well. There was plenty of food, plenty of love. So why did eating — a simple, everyday act — seem like a burden to her?
She tried reasoning with her, but the more she talked, the more Grandma resisted. Until one day, in a moment of frustration, she blurted out, “Grandma, you make me so sad when you act like this.” The old woman froze, then sighed. “I’m over seventy. I won’t be around much longer. It doesn’t matter how I eat.”
The words cut deep. Mira thought about taking her to a psychologist (心理医生) but knew she’d refuse. So she turned to an old companion, the AI.
The response came quickly. Grandma was refusing food because she felt like she no longer had a place in the family. The AI offered suggestions: Help her feel secure and needed.

(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;

【答案】Dear Tom,
Thank you so much for your warm congratulations! It’s truly encouraging to receive your kind words.
As for my volunteer experience, I have been tutoring students from low-income families every weekend for the past year. Besides that, I also helped organize book donations for a rural school and took part in community clean-up activities.
Through these experiences, I’ve learned how rewarding it is to contribute to society. Not only did I improve my communication skills, but I also gained a deeper sense of responsibility and empathy.
Thanks again for your support!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】参考范文:
With AI’s assistance, Mira began her plan. First, she worked with AI to create customized recipes for Grandma, accounting for her age-related digestive issues and past preferences to make nutritious, easy-to-swallow dishes. Meanwhile, following AI’s suggestion to make Grandma feel valued, the family started to shower her with more attention — sitting with her at meals, chatting warmly, expressing appreciation and encouraging her to eat. As days passed, Grandma began to sense the genuine care and importance the family placed on her. Gradually, the once-stubborn resistance to food faded away.
As meals became less of a battle, Mira decided to relight the sparkle in grandmother’s eyes. “It’s time to make her feel needed,” Mira thought, appealing to Grandma’s pride as the village’s best tailor and asking her to make a special outfit for a school event. Grandma’s eyes lit up immediately, a spark of the old force she once had returning. Mira and Grandma spent hours crafting together — Grandma patiently guiding her through measuring, cutting, and sewing, sharing stories of her tailor days. This interaction restored Grandma’s self-worth, strengthened their bond, and gave her a new lease on life. Her appetite improved with renewed energy from skill recognition, leaving Mira amazed at AI’s role as an outstanding virtual psychologist.
