Developing your creativity

Experience and creativity
Experience discourages creativity
• The findings of a creativity test given to (1) ___________

Lecturer: In 1968, a creativity test was administered to 1,600 five-year-olds. It was found that 98% of the children scored at a genius level of creativity. In other words,
their ability to think out of the box was extremely high. Five years later, the test was re-administered to these children, and the number decreased dramatically to 30%.
Another five years later, it further dropped to 12%. When the test was given to 280,000 adults, only 2% registered at a genius level. The findings were interesting and troubling in equal measure. It seems, unfortunately, that as we
grow older, we tend to lose the ability to be creative.
This is not so surprising though, for, as we age, we gain more experience and are more likely to follow set routines.
in some/equal measure在某种/同样程度上
This can sometimes lead to a fixed mindset, creating mental blocks that prevent us from accessing new and creative ideas. To get around these blocks, we need to think out of the box and come at a problem from a different angle. An example of this is the invention of
the assembly line in the early 20th century.
assembly line= production line装配线; 流水作业线
Here is the basic concept behind it: instead of moving around machines to get work done, workers stay in a fixed place while different parts of a product are moved in front of them in a continuously moving line. Since this approach was introduced, efficiency at the factory has been greatly improved.
On the other hand, experience sometimes does encourage creativity. Isaac Newton famously said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.”
Indeed, a light bulb moment does not always come out of nowhere, and a great innovation could be the result of drawing on past experience and building on the work of previous generations. James Watt, for instance,
improved the effectiveness of steam engines that already existed in his day, rather than inventing one on his own.
B. Colin has found an article giving tips on how to develop one’s creativity. Read the article below and answer the following questions.
How to become more creative
In our ever‑changing world, where new problems occur regularly and innovative solutions are always expected, creativity is becoming a skill increasingly in demand. △Indeed, the value of creativity can never be overstated.
The seriousness of the crime cannot be overstated.
In recognition of the important role that creativity and innovation play in all aspects of human development, the United Nations has been celebrating World Creativity and
Innovation Day on 21 April annually since 2018.
Creativity is a skill which can be learnt. So, how can you become more creative? First of all, it has been well accepted that looking for connections inspires creativity.
World Creativity andInnovation Day 世界创意和创新日
Things or ideas that seem unrelated are like dots in isolation, and when connected, they can form different pictures. This can be made easier by acquiring good subject knowledge, developing a broad understanding of human experience, and keeping a note of things you have observed as well as ideas you have come up with. The more dots you have, the more connections you are capable of making.
in isolation (from sth./sb.)
Another means to improve creativity is to work with others. You don’t have to be creative all on your own. As different people have different mindsets, skills and abilities, sharing ideas and combining their strengths would give rise to new perspectives, ideas and approaches, and ultimately lead to creative innovations.
(all) on your own独自;单独;独立地
Last but not least, you must be ready to fight the fear of failure, which is often believed to be one of the biggest obstacles to creativity. In order to be creative, you need to be willing to take risks. Creativity is about experimenting and exploring. It is about trial and error.
take a risk/take risks冒险(做某事)
You need to accept that the process of innovation is a journey in which there will be both right and wrong turns. As long as you can reflect on the mistakes and make corrections accordingly, taking wrong turns is nothing to be feared.
as/so long as只要;既然,由于,就…来说
reflect (on/upon sth)认真思考;沉思
fear v.
Now that you know how to become more creative, what are you going to do about it? The simple answer is to start small. Creativity does not necessarily mean making a great discovery or invention; instead, it could mean making a minor improvement to an everyday situation or finding a simple solution to an everyday problem.
Therefore, look for problems in your daily life that need to be solved. Try to find connections between different things and ideas, brainstorm with others, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Then you will have your light bulb moment!
1. What tips are given on how to develop your creativity?
2. What can you do to be creative in your daily life?
Look for connections, work with others and be ready to fight the fear of failure.
Look for problems in our daily life that need to be solved, try to find connections between different things and ideas, and brainstorm with others. Plus, do not be afraid to make mistakes.
C. In pairs, have a discussion about creativity. Use the following questions to help you. Page 24
• What is creativity?
• Why is creativity important?
• What discourages creativity?
• How can we develop our creativity?
Possible answer
A: I think creativity is the ability to view things in new ways or from different perspectives. In other words, to think out of the box.
B: Agree. In our ever-changing world, where new problems occur regularly and innovative solutions are always expected, creativity is becoming a skill increasingly in demand.
A: That’s true. However, our creativity level drops as we age. In fact, a study showed that it dropped from around 98% in five-year-olds to 2% in adults! Perhaps gaining more experience as we age causes us to develop mental blocks,
which makes it difficult for us to access new and creative ideas.
B: Interesting point. But I think today’s technology is another reason. Research shows digital distraction inhibits creativity because it takes us away from activities that can stimulate our creativity such as reading, playing an instrument or painting.
in·hibit /ɪnˈhɪbɪt/ 阻止;阻碍;抑制
take away from sth减少;减弱;贬低
A: Well, thankfully, creativity can be learnt. I know that looking for connections between things and ideas can inspire creativity. And the more we know, the more our creativity grows.
B: Indeed! But we don’t have to only look to ourselves to build our creativity.Other people can also help improve it. With different mindsets, skills and abilities, and by sharing ideas, perspectives and approaches, cooperating with
others could lead to creative innovations.
look to sb for sth/to do sth依赖,期待,指望(某人提供某物或做某事)
A: Exactly. However, another obstacle to creativity is the fear of failure. To be creative, we must be willing to take risks and accept that making mistakes is part of the creative journey. Reflecting on our failures can reveal other solutions, so failure should be seen as a necessary tool.
B: Good point. I think experience can also encourage creativity. We can use experience to find our light bulb moment, just like Isaac Newton and James Watt did. We can start by solving an everyday problem. After all, creativity, like any skill, must be practised!
D.Write an article about creativity. Use your ideas from part C and the information in parts A and B to help you. Check and improve your writing after you finish it.
Creativity: make it a way of life
Creativity is the ability to view things in new ways or from different perspectives.Creative thinking leads to new ideas or possibilities, which we can use to solve problems, communicate with others and entertain ourselves. As the world changes constantly and new problems occur regularly, creativity becomes a skill increasingly in demand.
Unfortunately, there are various things that cause us to lose our creativity. As we age, we have much life experience that over time leads to a fixed mindset. This
mindset builds mental blocks and prevents creativity. In fact, a test found that 98% of five-year-old children had a genius level of creativity, while only 2% of adults registered at the same level. Another thing that results in our lack of creativity is that digital distraction takes us away from activities that can stimulate our creativity such as reading, playing an instrument or painting.
In today’s world where the convenience of technology surrounds us, sadly we become less creative.
Though creativity may decrease as we age, there are ways to develop it. Firstly, by increasing our knowledge about a subject, we are more likely to notice connections
between things and ideas, which can help inspire creativity. Secondly, creativity is improved when we work with other people because the combination of different mindsets and abilities gives rise to new perspectives and approaches.
Thirdly, to be creative, we also need to overcome the fear of failure. We need to take risks, experiment and explore, though the process may lead to some mistakes. If we reflect on our failures and see them as a necessary tool, they can lead us down other creative paths. Finally, creativity is not only about original thinking and ideas, but also about building on the past experience of others. James Watt, for instance, made steam engines more effective instead of inventing his own. In a word, creativity is a skill that can be learnt throughout life, and we should certainly make it our way of life.
