B Many things can now be bought using buy-now, pay-later (BNPL) financing. Such purchases are often the subject of ridicule (嘲笑,嘲弄). Paying for lunch in installments(分期付款) is, to some, consumerism at its most absurd. Others see something darker: it skirts the edge of mainstream finance, targeting unstable borrowers. Neither ridicule nor concern has weakened the industry’s growth, however. The idea of a loan at the point of sale is an old one. In 1856 Isaac Singer and Edward Clark began selling sewing machines in installments, with great success. The modern industry operates in a similar manner. When a customer buys a product for $100, they can pay in stages. The BNPL lender pays the merchant in advance, in exchange for a cut of, say, $3. This is attractive to retailers, since it boosts sales. The customer pays back the sum over time, with zero interest (利息). BNPL plans promise freedom and flexibility, but the ease of use can fool our minds. When payment is delayed or divided into smaller payments, we are wired to feel less emotionally exhausted. Although the $15 or $25 payments seem insignificant, they quickly add up. Prelec & Loewenstein found that when the act of paying is separated from the act of purchasing, we experience less “pain of paying”, which makes us more likely to overspend. This psychological disconnection allows people to underestimate the long-term cost of their spending and often leads to impulsive financial decisions. In societies where digital credit is easily accessible but financial education is limited, these behaviours can develop into long-term debt. Stress over money doesn’t stay in the bank. It follows us into our homes, our relationships, and even our sleep. The psychological price can be severe when financial anxiety affects daily survival, such as paying for food, housing, or education. Even middle- and high-income earners report significant anxiety when caught in cycles of lifestyle-driven debt because of the pressure. 4. What does the underlined phrase “skirts the edge” mean in paragraph 1? A. Challenges the rules. B. Simplifies the process. C. Operates near the boundary. D. Escapes from the control. 5. How does BNPL benefit retailers directly? A. With tax reduction. B. Through sales promotion. C. Via interest collection. D. By lowering product prices. 6. What is the author’s tone when discussing BNPL’s psychological effects? A. Emotionally neutral. B. Cautiously critical. C. Humorously ironic. D. Enthusiastically supportive. 7. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The technical operation of BNPL. B. The historical evolution of credit. C. The global popularity of installments. D. The hidden costs of delayed payment. C When Inside Higher Education recently interviewed college students about their reading. Ava Wherley, a biology major, complained, “Academic texts usually use extremely complex language, which makes them harder to read. I have to rely on short videos for comprehension.” But Wherley is not, as she believes, a visual learner. Instead, she’s just a struggling reader with a fluency at a middle-school reading level. In this respect, Wherley has plenty of company. According to the study, millions of college students in the US have to rely on videos or AI for their reading nowadays, largely because they struggle with reading comprehension beyond a basic level. The interviewers have further revealed that students struggle with reading mainly because teachers have reduced the amount and complexity of students’ reading materials in primary and secondary grades. They have found that most teachers in secondary education usually assign short reading passages. And, in the few classes where students read books, they usually receive summaries, which “just ruins the whole story,” as Wherley protested. “However, when kids read entire novels without notes or summaries, they discover the pleasures of reading. Such kind of reading gives even avoidant readers the enhanced vocabulary they need to become better readers,” the interviewers write in their report. Another major finding from the research is that reading frequency accounts for 13% of the variation between strong and weak readers in elementary grades, a difference that climbs to 30% in high school and 34% in college students. Moreover, as the study has revealed, students who read entire books in their leisure time enjoy the most significant benefits to their reading comprehension. “Despite these significant benefits, only 14 percent of the students reported reading in their leisure time,” the report concludes. “The result perfectly illustrates the Matthew Effect: the more they avoid reading, the harder they’ll find reading. In other words, students may be caught in a vicious (恶性的) cycle that ruins their success in college, the workplace, and life, including their ability to understand a complex argument or make an informed decision.” 8. Why does Ava Wherley turn to short videos? A. The reading materials are boring. B. The academic texts are too complex. C. She fails to reach the required reading fluency. D. She is a student with learning disabilities. 9. What might the researchers advise teachers to do in secondary education? A. Encourage students to read entire books. B. Ask students to read notes or summaries. C. Help weak readers learn the new words first. D. Give struggling students short reading passages. 10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Students should be given more leisure time. B. Avoidant students need more encouragement. C. American students are happy with their reading skills. D. Reading fluency is critical for students’ success. 11 What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text? A. To find out the root cause of reading problems. B. To introduce the findings of a recent survey. C. To review a newly published educational report. D. To expose the problems in the US higher education. D Under the baking sun, Xu Xiaolong and his colleagues walked through wild grass in the Gobi Desert, scanning the rocky foothills of Helan Mountain in Yinchuan, Northwest China’s Ningxia Hui autonomous region, in search of ancient carvings. Upon finding a pattern on a rock, the team immediately photographed and recorded its location. “This field survey not only assesses the preservation status of previously discovered rock carvings but also helps identify and record new ones,” says Xu, 36, who works with the city’s Helan Mountain rock art administration. He explains that the work lays the foundation for subsequent (随后的) protection efforts. Stretching 250 kilometers, Helan Mountain is home to more than 20,000 ancient rock carvings created by early residents with stones or metal tools. Dating back approximately 10,000 to 3,000 years, the carvings describe diverse subjects ranging from natural images like human faces, animals and handprints, to ancient life scenes like hunting and herding (畜牧). Launched in 2020, the administration has surveyed over 12 square kilometers in and around the Helan Mountain rock art ruins park. Among the carvings, one is characterized by two handprints — one large and the other small. “The handprints likely symbolize ‘me’ and ‘you’, carved into the rock to reach an agreement,” says Zhang Jianguo, deputy director of the administration. He adds that attaching a handprint to documents like contracts was a traditional practice in China, and this rock carving reflects that lasting cultural continuity. Within the park the deepest carving reaches 1.5 centimeters, a depth that has survived many years of weathering. Through an experiment, the administration found that even three people carving throughout an entire day left only unclear marks, indicating that a single work likely took multiple generations of prehistoric people to complete. Despite their historic significance, the rock carvings face typical preservation challenges like weathering and rainwater. Throughout the entire conservation journey, concrete efforts including field surveys, the construction of flood-prevention dams and protective fencing have been made by workers from the Helan Mountain rock art administration. 12. Why do the researchers study rock carvings in Helan Mountain? A. To show prehistoric carving skills. B. To reveal ancient local life and culture. C. To help restore a ruined rock art park. D. To attract tourists to Helan Mountain. 13. What do the two handprints in paragraph 4 probably represent? A. A mark pointing to Helan Mountain. B. A record of an ancient hunting activity. C. A conventional way of signing a contract. D. A gesture indicating family relationship. 14. What can we learn about the rock carving in paragraph 5? A It was a long-term project. B. It was created in good weather. C. It was completed within limited time. D. It was discovered in an experiment. 15. What is a suitable title for the text? A. A race against time to rescue rock carvings B. Advanced techniques to protect rock carvings C. A living museum of culture in Helan Mountain D. A symbolic handprint carving in ancient China 第二节 七选五 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项多余选项。 The college life is full of vigor (活力). ____16____ This article discusses the transformative power of student organizations, exploring how they contribute to the creation of welcoming, diverse and inclusive environments on campuses nationwide. His father, Mr. Brown, was a pilot who often traveled for work and couldn’t be home very often. Because of this, John didn’t see his father much — sometimes only once or twice a month. Although his mother always cared for him, John still missed his father’s company. He didn’t complain, but he felt a little disappointed each time his dad missed an important moment. One day, John’s school announced a tech fair. Students could design a creative project. John was excited about the fair as he was attracted to handwork. He decided to build a smart robot that could follow voice commands (指令). Over the following two weeks, he threw himself into the project, staying late after school almost every day. He practiced his presentation and imagined his parents clapping (鼓掌). Before finishing the project, John called his dad excitedly and told him about the fair, “Dad, this is the first time for me to build a smart robot. I wonder if you could join me there.” “I really want to be there,” Mr. Brow n said over the phone, “but I might have a flight that day. I’ll try my best.” The day of the fair came. The hall was full of students and their parents. John’s mother stood in the crowd, smiling and holding her phone to take pictures. But his father didn’t show up. John still did a great job in his presentation, but deep inside, he felt a little sad. That evening, when he got home, John found a handwritten note on the kitchen table: “I’m sorry I couldn’t come. I’m proud of you. Let’s build a better one together next weekend.” Just then, John’s phone buzzed. 【答案】4. C 5. B 6. B 7. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍“先买后付”(BNPL)支付方式的运作模式、对商家和消费者的影响,以及其背后隐藏的财务与心理成本。 【4题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第一段“it skirts the edge of mainstream finance, targeting unstable borrowers.(它处于主流金融的skirts the edge,以不稳定的借款人为目标。)”可知,BNPL 模式针对不稳定借款人,处于主流金融的边缘地带。“skirts the edge”意为“在边界附近运作”,与“Operates near the boundary”同义。故选C项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“This is attractive to retailers, since it boosts sales.(这对零售商很有吸引力,因为它能促进销售。)”可知,BNPL通过提升销量直接使零售商受益。故选B项。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“This psychological disconnection allows people to underestimate the long-term cost of their spending and often leads to impulsive financial decisions. In societies where digital credit is easily accessible but financial education is limited, these behaviours can develop into long-term debt.(这种心理层面的脱节会让人们低估消费的长期成本,还常常导致冲动的财务决策。在数字信贷触手可及、但金融教育却相对匮乏的社会中,这类行为可能会演变成长期债务)”作者在第三段指出,BNPL的便捷性会让人忽视支付痛苦、过度消费,甚至陷入长期债务;根据第四段“Stress over money doesn’t stay in the bank. It follows us into our homes, our relationships, and even our sleep. The psychological price can be severe when financial anxiety affects daily survival, such as paying for food, housing, or education.(金钱带来的压力从不会只停留在银行账户上。 C When Inside Higher Education recently interviewed college students about their reading. 11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text? A. To find out the root cause of reading problems. B. To introduce the findings of a recent survey. C. To review a newly published educational report. D. To expose the problems in the US higher education. 【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了一项关于大学生阅读能力的调查研究。研究发现许多大学生因阅读流畅度不足而依赖视频或AI获取理解,分析了导致这一问题的教育原因,并指出阅读频率对阅读理解能力的重要影响。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“But Wherley is not, as she believes, a visual learner. Instead, she’s just a struggling reader with a fluency at a middle-school reading level. (但Wherley并不像她自己认为的那样是一个视觉学习者。相反,她只是一个阅读困难的读者,阅读流畅度只达到中学水平。)”可知,Ava Wherley求助短视频是因为她没有达到所需的阅读流畅度。故选C项。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“The interviewers have further revealed that students struggle with reading mainly because teachers have reduced the amount and complexity of students’ reading materials in primary and secondary grades. (采访者们进一步透露,学生在阅读方面存在困难,主要是因为中小学教师减少了学生阅读材料的数量并降低了其复杂度。)”以及第四段““However, when kids read entire novels without notes or summaries, they discover the pleasures of reading. Such kind of reading gives even avoidant readers the enhanced vocabulary they need to become better readers,” the interviewers write in their report. (“然而,当孩子们阅读整本小说且不借助注释或摘要时,他们会发现阅读的乐趣。这种阅读方式甚至能让那些不爱读书的孩子掌握更多词汇,而这些词汇正是他们成为更优秀读者所需要的,”采访者在他们的报告中写道。)”可知,研究者认为教师应鼓励学生阅读完整书籍而非依赖摘要。故选A项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The result perfectly illustrates the Matthew Effect: the more they avoid reading, the harder they’ll find reading. In other words, students may be caught in a vicious (恶性的) cycle that ruins their success in college, the workplace, and life, including their ability to understand a complex argument or make an informed decision. (这一结果完美地阐释了马太效应:他们越回避阅读,就会觉得阅读越困难。换句话说,学生们可能会陷入一个恶性循环,这会毁掉他们在大学、职场以及生活中的成功,包括他们理解复杂论点或做出明智决策的能力。)”可推知,阅读流畅度对学生的成功至关重要。故选D项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。纵览全文,根据第一段中“When Inside Higher Education recently interviewed college students about their reading. (当《高等教育内幕》最近就阅读问题采访大学生时。)”以及下文提到的研究发现,如学生阅读困难的原因、阅读频率对阅读能力的影响等,可知,作者写这篇文章的主要目的是介绍最近一项调查的结果。故选B项。 D Under the baking sun, Xu Xiaolong and his colleagues walked through wild grass in the Gobi Desert, scanning the rocky foothills of Helan Mountain in Yinchuan, Northwest China’s Ningxia Hui autonomous region, in search of ancient carvings. Within the park, the deepest carving reaches 1.5 centimeters, a depth that has survived many years of weathering. A. It was a long-term project. B. It was created in good weather. C. It was completed within limited time. D. It was discovered in an experiment. 15. What is a suitable title for the text? A. A race against time to rescue rock carvings B. Advanced techniques to protect rock carvings C. A living museum of culture in Helan Mountain D. A symbolic handprint carving in ancient China 【答案】12. It was a message from his dad: “Call me if you’re still awake.” 注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 John picked up the phone and quickly called his father ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ That promise made John feel much better. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】John picked up the phone and quickly called his father. To his surprise, his father answered almost at once. “Hey, champ,” his dad said gently, “I saw the photos your mom sent. You looked amazing up there.” John smiled, though his voice trembled a little. “I really wanted you to be there,” he said softly. There was a pause. Then his father replied, “I know. I’m sorry. But next weekend, I’ve cleared my schedule. Just you and me — robot time.” That promise made John feel much better. The disappointment from the tech fair faded as anticipation for the weekend grew. He spent days enhancing his robot, researching new features. On the weekend morning, John woke up early, tools and materials ready. Every sound outside made his heart race. When Mr. Brown finally arrived, John greeted him with a huge smile. They worked together, chatting and laughing. John realized that despite his father’s busy schedule, this moment was what truly mattered — a promise kept and memories made. 1】John smiled, though his voice trembled a little.(运用了though引导的状语从句) 【高分句型2】The disappointment from the tech fair faded as anticipation for the weekend grew.(运用了as引导的状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
