Chinese swimming star Yu Zidi, who won the third place at the 2024 Paris Olympics at just 12 years old, has broken the Asian record in the 200m medley (混合泳) event. The 13- year- old set the mark at the 2025 National Games of China in Shenzhen on Tuesday.
Yu won the 200m medley gold medal with a time of 2 minutes and 7.41 seconds. She broke the record held by 2012 London Olympic champion Ye Shiwen 13 years ago, beating the former mark by 0.16 seconds. The achievement makes Yu the 9th fastest female swimmer of all time in the 200m medley event. She is now closing in on the elite (精英) group of only six swimmers who have ever finished under 2 minutes and 7 seconds. The world record is held by Canada’s Summer McIntosh at 2 minutes and 5.7 seconds.
Born in Baoding Hebei Province, Yu was discovered by chance at a water park when she was six years old. Three years later, she joined swimming club Hebei Taihua Jinye and quickly became a member of the provincial team. In 2024, Yu attracted attention when she took part in 10 events at the National Games. In May 2025, she continued to make more progress. After her historic third place in Paris, Yu became the youngest medalist in the history of the World Aquatics Championships in 2025, also at age 12.
Chinese experts now regard her as the new face of Asian swimming, drawing comparisons to Ye Shiwen, who won Olympic gold at 16. Yu is expected to be a major star for China at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Swimming, however, has not come easy. Yu faced difficulties balancing training and studies last year. “I almost gave up swimming before the national championships last year because of tiredness from training and studies; Luckily, thanks to my coaches, teammates, friends and parents, I realized swimming is a necessary part of my life, and I cannot give it up. The most difficult times are often when we are closest to achieving our goals. I keep reminding myself that hard work will surely bring good results.”
4. What do we know about Yu Zidi from paragraph 2?
A. She broke a record kept for 13 years. B. She joined an elite group of six swimmers.
C She broke the world record by 0.16 seconds. D. She swam much faster than Summer McIntosh.
5. What leads to Yu Zidi’s rapid rise according to the passage?
A. She broke many world records in 2025. B. She received years of training abroad.
C. She was found early and kept improving. D. She won ten golds at 2024 National Games.
6. Why is Ye Shiwen mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To show how excellent Yu is. B. To explain why Ye has achieved a lot.
C. To show failure is the mother of success. D. To compare the difference between Yu and Ye.
7. Which of the following can best describe Yu?
A. Active and humorous. B. Adventurous and curious.
C. Independent and helpful. D. Hard-working and determined.

Speaking more than one language could be connected to slower aging, according to a new study. An international team of researchers looked at data (数据) from more than 86,000 adults from 27 European countries. They were all aged between 51 and 90.
The researchers used this data to create models of people’s “biological (生物) age” based on their physical and mental health, and compared it to the number of years they had actually lived. They found that people from countries where people mostly speak only one language were about twice as likely to have a biological age that was older than their real age.
And people from countries where people usually speak more than one language were 2.17times less likely to be aging faster than their real age. In fact, the more languages people usually spoke, the less likely they were to age faster. Experts have said that at least half of the world’s population speaks more than one language. However, up to 75% of people who speak English as a first language only speak English.
The benefits of learning a second language are clear, according to the study. The researchers said people should be encouraged to keep their brains active by learning and using more languages. This is something that governments could think about as a way to help protect people’s health, they added. They described language learning as a low-cost way to improve our health as we get older.
But experts say learning or speaking more languages isn’t the only way to slow our aging. According to the American Heart Association, there are eight key things you can do to slow your body’s aging: eat better; sleep well, stay active, don’t smoke, and manage your weight, blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol (胆固醇).
8. What is the main finding of the study?
A. Learning languages helps the mind. B. Getting older affects language skills.
C. Exercise is good for learning languages. D. Speaking more languages can slow down aging.
9. How did researchers decide people’s biological age?
A. By testing language skills. B. By measuring blood pressure.
C. By checking health of body and mind. D. By studying how people communicate.
10. What is the researchers’ suggestion according to paragraph 4?
A. Keeping brains active by exercising. B. Encouraging people to learn more languages.
C. Improving health through cheap methods. D. Asking governments to reduce health costs.
11. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To show other ways to slow aging. B. To compare different research results.
C. To introduce the best way to keep healthy. D. To present health organizations’ study results.

The next big volcanic disaster is more likely to come from sleeping volcanoes that are hardly watched, rather than famous ones like Etna or Yellowstone. Why are ‘quiet’ volcanoes more dangerous? This is partly because of common human biases (偏见). Many people think that something that has been quiet will stay quiet. If a volcano hasn’t erupted for a long time, people often naturally consider it is safe.
If people can quickly picture an event in their mind, they think it’s more likely to happen. This is a quick trick of the mind. Well-known volcanoes or eruptions, such as the Icelandic ash cloud from 2010, are familiar and can feel threatening (威胁), while remote volcanoes with no recent eruptions seldom register at all.
These biases create a dangerous problem: we only spend the most money after a disaster has already happened. El Chichón, for example, was only monitored (监测) after the 1982 disaster. However, three-quarters of large eruptions(like El Chichón and bigger) come from volcanoes that have been quiet for at least 100 years and, as a result, receive the least attention.
We must prepare for volcanoes ahead of time, not just after they erupt. With proper watch on volcanoes, with communities prepared to respond (反应), and with good teamwork between experts and the government, we can save thousands of people. Disasters have been averted in these ways in 1991 (at Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines), in 2019 (at Mount Merapi in Indonesia) and in 2021 (at La Soufriere on the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent).
To close these gaps, the world needs to pay more attention to under-monitored volcanoes in places such as Latin America, south-east Asia, Africa and the Pacific-places where millions of people live close to volcanoes that have little or no historical record. This is where the greatest risks lie, and where even small amounts of money spent on monitoring, early warning and community preparedness could save the most lives.
12. What can we learn about how most people see sleeping volcanoes?
A. It may cause wrong decisions. B. It focuses on recent happenings.
C. It matches scientific guesses. D. It considers famous ones most.
13. What does the underlined word “averted” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Expected. B. Prevented. C. Recorded. D. Contacted.
14. How does the author think of spending money on volcano monitoring?
A. It needs to be cut down now. B. It is suitable for developed countries.
C. It brings great value at a low cost. D. It requires more international help.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Cost of Monitoring Volcanoes matters B. Why Famous Volcanoes Threaten Us Most
C. How Volcanoes Change Human Activities D. The Quiet Volcanoes May Have Great Risks

I really liked Julia from my first day of high school. As a shy freshman, I watched her with quiet admiration. She laughed easily and drew classmates to her like a magnet (磁铁). Julia spoke confidently in class, making complex (复杂的) topics sound simple. I wished I could be that outgoing. I wanted to be her friend, but didn’t know how to start. Every time I thought about talking to her, my words got stuck. Would someone so popular want to be friends with someone like me? I practiced greetings before my mirror, but they never sounded right. Her world seemed too bright for me to enter.
Everything changed last Friday during an English class. Julia gave a speech that moved everyone. Her voice was clear and her stories were wonderful. Feeling brave. I wrote her a note during break: “Your speech was amazing! I really want to be your friend. From Mary.” When the bell rang, I saw her packing her bag. “Julia,” I said nervously, “this is for you.” I handed her the note. She smiled and said “Thank you”, then quickly put it in her English book before hurrying to her next class.
Two weeks passed without any reply. I felt sad and confused. Did I do something wrong? Was my note not good enough? Finally, I decided to ask her directly. Gathering every bit of my courage, I walked to the library after my last class. I found Julia studying in the library, her head buried in a thick textbook. Seeing her there, looking just as ordinary and focused as I felt, gave me the final push I needed.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
“Hi,” I said quietly, “did you get my note?” She looked up, surprised.

Born in Baoding, Hebei Province, Yu was discovered by chance at a water park when she was six years old.

Speaking more than one language could be connected to slower aging, according to a new study. An international team of researchers looked at data (数据) from more than 86,000 adults from 27 European countries. They were all aged between 51 and 90.
The researchers used this data to create models of people’s “biological (生物的) age” based on their physical and mental health, and compared it to the number of years they had actually lived.
D 9. C 10. B 11. A

According to the American Heart Association, there are eight key things you can do to slow your body’s aging: eat better; sleep well, stay active, don’t smoke, and manage your weight, blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol 故选A。
D
A 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第一段“Many people think that something that has been quiet will stay quiet. If a volcano hasn’t erupted for a long time, people often naturally consider it is safe(很多人认为一直平静的事物会持续平静。如果一座火山长时间没有喷发,人们通常会下意识地认为它是安全的)”以及第三段“These biases create a dangerous problem: we only spend the most money after a disaster has already happened(这些偏见造成了一个危险的问题:我们只在灾难发生后才投入大量资金)”可知,大多数人对休眠火山的看法存在偏见,会认为休眠火山是安全的,进而导致灾后才投入资金的错误决策。故选A。
根据第四段“We must prepare for volcanoes ahead of time, not just after they erupt. With proper watch on volcanoes, with communities prepared to respond, and with good teamwork between experts and the government, we can save thousands of people(我们必须提前为火山活动做好准备,而不是只在火山喷发后才行动。通过对火山进行妥善监测、让社区做好应对准备、促进专家和政府之间的良好协作,我们可以挽救数千人的生命)”,结合后文列举的1991年菲律宾皮纳图博火山、2019年印尼默拉皮火山、2021年加勒比海圣文森特岛苏弗里埃尔火山的案例可知,这些提前准备的措施让灾难得以避免。因此“averted”的意思是“避免、阻止”。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“This is where the greatest risks lie, and where even small amounts of money spent on monitoring, early warning and community preparedness could save the most lives(这是最大的风险所在,即使在监测、预警和社区准备方面投入少量资金,也可以挽救最多的生命)”可知,作者认为在火山监测上的投入成本低但价值高。
D The Quiet Volcanoes May Have Great Risks(休眠火山可能存在巨大风险)能够概括全文主旨,适合用作标题。故选D。

Dear Jim,

As an important part of Chinese culture, calligraphy is more than just writing characters well. By learning it, you can better understand our traditional art. What’s more, it helps you become more patient and focused. When you practice writing characters with a brush, you need to calm down and pay attention to every detail, which is also useful for your study. 47.

“Hi,” I said quietly, “did you get my note?” She looked up, surprised. “What note?” Julia asked, looking confused. I explained, “I gave you a note two weeks ago, saying I wanted to be friends with you.” Just then, she opened her English book, and the note fell out. “Oh no,” she gasped, picking it up. “I put it here and completely forgot! I’m so sorry, Mary. I’ve been busy with exams and didn’t see it.” “Oh, my dear…” Her voice was soft, and tears came to her eyes.
“Oh, Mary! It was all a misunderstanding!” Julia explained, her voice filled with apology (歉意).“I would love to be your friend! Your note means so much to me.” She smiled warmly and took my hands. “Let’s talk more now. Maybe we can study together or hang out this weekend?” I nodded happily, my heart full of joy. That day, I learned that friendship isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being brave enough to reach out.
