My husband and I used to live in the city, but we often faced a lot of problems there. There was a lot of late-night noise. It was difficult to find parking. And the rent of the apartment was high.
Finally, my husband and I decided to move to the suburbs (郊区) outside Boston. We started looking for our new home. It turned out that many other people were also moving to the suburbs and it wasn’t easy to find a nice house there. Finally, we went to see a small and dark house. It needed a lot of work. But it was well built and it was on a street where we could walk to Starbucks, restaurants and bus stops. Well, before I knew it, we had made an offer and the house became ours.
On our first night in the house I cried for five hours. I thought we had made the wrong choice and I wanted to go back to the city. The house was smelly and old. And many families and old people lived around it. But after thinking of the problems we had when we were living in the city, I calmed down. Besides, our new home wasn’t that bad, after all. I had a driveway of my own. There were three big bedrooms and a backyard for my dog. Oh, how lovely the sound of nothing was. I changed the house inch by inch and it became a very comfortable home.
We have been in our house for over two years until now and it’s the best move we have ever made. While I’m glad I can drive into the city in 15 minutes and enjoy all it has offered, I’m always happy to return home.
4. The writer and her husband moved to the suburbs because they ________.
A. no longer liked living in the city B. couldn’t afford the rent in the city
C. wanted to buy a small house D. found work there
5. On the first night in the house, the writer ________.
A. was too excited B. felt scared living there
C. regretted moving there at first D. was moved to tears by its quietness
6. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 show about the house?
A. It was lovely. B. It was really quiet.
C. It had nothing in it. D. It had beautiful sound.
7. We can learn from the passage that the writer ________.
A. hates driving to the city B. is afraid of returning home
C. loves living in the suburbs now D. cannot wait to go back to the city
C
Dear Mary,
It was so nice to read your letter the other day. I have always dreamed about having a pen friend. Hopefully, we can learn from each other and grow to be the very best of friends. It is my wish that our letters will let us get to know each other and share parts of our lives.
Your horse Shannon sounds beautiful. I am very jealous (羡慕的) that you get to live on a farm. I cannot imagine how much fun it is to ride a horse through endless fields and I would love to come and visit you one day. Your siblings (兄弟姊妹) also sound lovely. I am an only child, so I can only imagine what it is like to have older brothers and sisters.
Life in New York is so busy and it is difficult to find the time to get to know people. Even becoming close to my classmates has proved to be quite difficult over the years. However, at times it can be the most amazing city in the whole wide world. At night it is so bright and lively and the whole place is full of things to do.
I love reading too! I have never read any books by your favorite author Enid Blyton though. I will have to go to my local library and find some. I also enjoy dancing and often enter competitions. My other favorite hobby is ice skating. In winter, I skate in Central Park. In the other seasons, I go to an indoor rink (溜冰场). I am hoping to start entering ice skating competitions next year.
Anyway, I have to go now and do my homework. I really hope that I hear from you soon!
Lots of love,
Megan
8. What can we infer from the letter?
A. Megan has pen friends all over the world.
B. Mary plans to visit Megan in New York.
C. Megan has been writing to Mary for years.
D. Mary and Megan have just become friends.
9. What is mainly described in Paragraph 3?
A. Mary's family. B. Megan's hobbies.
C. Mary's life in New York. D. Megan's opinion of New York.
10. How is Mary similar to Megan?
A. She likes reading. B. She loves horse riding.

Do you want to live a happier, less stressful life? Try laughing for no reason at all. That's how thousands of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy.
The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. "Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day," says Dr. Kataria. "Everyone is naturally good at laughing-it's the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives." There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over l,300 in the world.
Many doctors are also interested in the effects of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%.
So what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest, I wasn't interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha.” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can't tell the difference between real laughter and unreal laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects.
Surprisingly it worked! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people just couldn't stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed-and comfortable I felt. So if you're under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results!
12. In which country was the first Laughter Club started ?
A. India. B. America. C. Britain. D. China.
13. How did the writer feel at the beginning of the class?
A Surprised. B. Pleased. C. Nervous. D. Tired.
14. When did the people in the club begin to laugh for real?
A. After ten minutes. B. After ten hours.
C. After ten seconds. D. After ten days.
15. What does the article mainly tells us?
A. Young children laugh much more often than adults in a day
B. Laughing is one of the best ways to stay healthy
C Many-doctors are also interested in the effects of laughter on our health
D. Real laughter and unreal laughter are both good for health

After a long day, Zhang Tian finally got back to his small room, feeling tired. Zhang Tian had started working at seven in the morning and it was eight in the evening now. Zhang Tian had to prepare his lessons for the following day. This is a typical day for Zhang Tian.
By the dim yellow light overhead, sitting in front of a slightly shaking desk, Zhang Tian took out a pen and began to write his voluntary teaching experience in his diary:
Last year, Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher’s certificate. His parents, like most, hoped Zhang Tian would go to a big city to find a teaching job. Likewise, his friends all left the hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing.
However, Zhang Tian felt differently. Zhang Tian wanted to start a new lifestyle. Zhang Tian had met wonderful teachers from small villages during my early school years and Zhang Tian was inspired by them to go and teach where Zhang Tian was needed the most. For that reason Zhang Tian applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school in Guizhou Province.
Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. Zhang Tian imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently and teaching in a village.
Unluckily, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian’s hopes. The school was much smaller than Zhang Tian had expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. The power and water supplies were unstable, so Zhang Tian could only shower every three or four days, and Zhang Tian had to learn how to cook. Living in the village was also more challenging than Zhang Tian had thought. Meanwhile, the thought of leaving once flashed through his mind, but Zhang Tian quickly gave up on the idea and found ways to deal with the challenges.
The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for maths and Chinese. To make school life healthier and livelier for students, Zhang Tian introduced more subjects to the school — music, art and PE. It is not surprising that PE is the kids’ favourite subject! Gradually, school lives are now more attractive and interesting, and they enjoy playing football in the playground, as well as singing songs they’ve learnt. The school is now full of laughter and music. Zhang Tian is planning to organize the first-ever school concert! Everyone is very excited.

Dear Mary,
It was so nice to read your letter the other day.
Lots of love,
Megan

Surprisingly, it worked!
A. Surprised. B. Pleased. C. Nervous. D. Tired.
14. When did the people in the club begin to laugh for real?
A. After ten minutes. B. After ten hours.
C. After ten seconds. D. After ten days.
15. What does the article mainly tells us?
A. Young children laugh much more often than adults in a day
B. Laughing is one of the best ways to stay healthy
C. Many-doctors are also interested in the effects of laughter on our health
D. Real laughter and unreal laughter are both good for health

I know that you are under great pressure. I definitely understand how you feel. And I want to offer you some advice that can be helpful.
First of all, in my opinion, it’s important for you to have a positive attitude towards study and keep confident. If you have any questions, you can turn to your teacher and classmates for help. Besides, you should participate in school clubs in which you can develop your potential. At last, you'd better go out for a walk or do some outdoor exercise so that you can keep yourselves relaxed and then concentrate on study. In this way can you avoid suffering from the pressure of study.
I hope my suggestions are of use to you.

【答案】
Zhan Tian’s first year was almost over and it’s time to say goodbye. The news spread quietly through the village, and a subtle sadness seemed to hang in the air. For him, it had been a tough year, but what made him feel satisfied was that students were able to read, speak and write in English confidently with the help of him. On his final day, the school held the concert to bid him farewell. As Zhang Tian watched their performance, his eyes welled up with tears. Zhang Tian had learned from them about resilience, joy, and the purest form of gratitude.
When Zhang Tian was ready to get on the pedicab, the crowd came. Not just the students, but their parents too, emerging from the narrow lanes carrying baskets of eggs and vegetables. They extended the gratitude to Zhang Tian for educating the kids and appreciated his efforts. Children cried in choked voices, even saying, “Please stay here longer.” Tears rolling down, a year of volunteer teaching life vividly floated in his mind. When the pedicab driver started the engine , the children ran alongside, waving and shouting goodbye until the village faded into the green mountains. At that moment, Zhang Tian knew he had followed his heart when choosing what to do in his life, and realized self-fulfillment.
