Even in the face of fire, smoke and flood, firefighter Li Shengli doesn’t draw back. He simply says it is his job as a firefighter and his duty as a member of the Communist Party of China.
Li 51, who became a firefighter in 1991, has fought at the forefront in firefighting and rescue over the past 30 years. He has participated in over 11,000 tasks, saving about 30,000 trapped people.
In one task in May 1993, a fire broke out in a mall in Nanchang. When firefighters arrived at the scene, smoke and fire had blocked all the exits for people inside the building, leaving hundreds of people upstairs in danger. Facing smoke and flames, the then 21-year-old rushed to the front and climbed up the aerial ladder (云梯) to evacuate people from a height of more than 20 meters. Finally, about 270 people were rescued.
“Fear is a human nature, but not retreating is a kind of responsibility. With so many people waiting to be rescued, I couldn’t be afraid, let alone withdraw,” he said.
In July 2021, when several cities in Henan Province were hit by severe floods, Li joined the rescue. He and his teammates used a small boat to transfer trapped people. The boat suddenly lost power and stopped in the water. Without hesitation, Li jumped into the deep water and grabbed a rope to move them to a safe place several hundred meters away.
“The people on the boat were all villagers from my hometown. I brought my teammates to my hometown to fight the flood, and of course I needed to get down into the water first to help,” he said.
In September 2021, Li was transferred to the command center of Jiangxi Fire and Rescue Brigade due to many physical injuries. “The platform has changed, but the heart of being a firefighter is the same. You have to get to the front line when the emergency appears, then others would trust you.”

In Baiyin, a city in Northwest China’s Gansu Province, cool night winds carry the smell of herbs (药草) like astragalus and angelica. Under bright lights, people gather around cupping stations and pulse-reading houses. This lively scene is at the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Night Market in Wansheng Park. Here, TCM wisdom—with a history of thousands of years—has become a popular evening activity for Generation Z (those born from the mid-1990s to the early 2010s).
Yu Huiyan, a 21-year-old, said the hot weather made her tired and sleepy. She came to the night market for herbal help because TCM had worked well for her before. After checking her tongue and pulse, a doctor found she had a weak pulse and felt tired. The doctor then gave her a mix of TCM herbs to increase her energy, reduce dampness in her body and keep her body in a good state. Yu and many of her friends have grown interested in TCM in recent years. She even learned TCM in college and now wants to use TCM to care for herself and others.
At the night market, young people love TCM treatments like acupuncture (针灸), cupping, foot baths, and ear seeds. Since early July, over 30 local medical groups have sent staff here to give free health checks, answer questions and offer personal advice. Zhu Dongmei, the organizer, says over 2,000 people visit daily, mostly young people waiting for pulse checks, herbal packages or tea.
Similar TCM night markets can be found across China. In Shenyang, there are TCM cultural product zones and fun activities. In Nanchang, robots do moxibustion (艾灸) and 3D foot scans. Da Chunhe, a local health official, says, “TCM is a national treasure. As more young people learn about it, they will benefit from it.”
8. Why did Yu Huiyan come to the TCM Night Market?
A. To learn TCM theories. B. To buy some equipment.
C. To work as a TCM volunteer. D. To get herbal help for her tiredness.
9. What can people get from the TCM Night Market in Wansheng Park?
A. Paid TCM treatments. B. Robotic moxibustion services.
C. Free service from local medical staff. D. Various kinds of TCM textbooks.
10. What is Da Chunhe’s attitude towards the development of TCM?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Negative.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. TCM night markets develop fast in the world.
B. There are different TCM night markets in China.
C. Yu Huiyan was first introduced to TCM in China.
D. TCM night markets are popular with young Chinese.

Hong Kong Wang Fuk Court Fire: A Tragedy and Lessons
On the afternoon of November 26, 2025, a fierce fire broke out in Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, New Territories, Hong Kong. The fire soon spread rapidly, and it took firefighters hours to bring it under control. Unfortunately, the Hong Kong Fire Services Department announced the next day that the disaster had caused 55 deaths, making it one of the most serious fires in Hong Kong in recent years.
Preliminary investigations showed that the fire was caused by illegally piled debris and flammable bamboo scaffolding outside the buildings. What made the situation worse was the strong easterly wind of 7 meters per second. The bamboo scaffolding and nylon protective nets on the outer walls burned quickly, acting like vertical chimneys (烟囱). Due to the “chimney effect”, the fire rushed from the 3rd floor to the top floor in just 15 minutes. High-rise building structures such as stairwells and elevator shafts accelerated the spread of high-temperature toxic smoke, which spread at a speed of 3-5 meters per second and could cover a 30-storey building in 30 seconds.
After the fire, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government took quick action. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu ordered comprehensive fire safety inspections of all public housing estates across the region. The Independent Commission Against Corruption launched an investigation into possible corruption (贪污) in the building renovation contracts related to the fire and made several arrests. Meanwhile, local communities began to carry out fire safety training, teaching residents fire escape skills such as “run quickly in small fires and close doors in big fires”.
Hong Kong has a large number of old buildings. Statistics show that there are as many as 40,000 buildings over 30 years old and more than 10,000 buildings over 50 years old in Hong Kong. This fire has sounded an alarm for the whole society. It reminds us that strengthening the fire safety transformation of old buildings and improving people’s awareness of fire risks are urgent tasks for urban safety.
12. What can we learn about the fire at Wang Fuk Court from the first paragraph?
A. It broke out on the morning of November 26, 2025.
B. It was brought under control within a few minutes.
C. It resulted in 55 deaths according to the official report.
D. It has been proved to be the most serious fire in Hong Kong’s history.
13. What does the underlined phrase “chimney effect” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. The phenomenon (现象) that smoke spreads slowly in closed spaces.
B. The phenomenon that air flows upward along vertical spaces and speed up smoke spread.
C. The effect that fire can be put out quickly by using chimney-like structure.
D. The situation that chimneys in buildings catch fire easily.
14. What measures were taken after the Wang Fuk Court fire?
A. The government ordered a full fire safety inspection of all private residences
B. The local government began to investigate relevant corruption cases
C. Local communities started to collect money for the people who got hurt in the fire
D. The government required residents to replace the nylon protective nets of their buildings
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the fire safety situation of old buildings in Hong Kong?
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.

C To work as a TCM volunteer. D. To get herbal help for her tiredness.
9. What can people get from the TCM Night Market in Wansheng Park?
A. Paid TCM treatments. B. Robotic moxibustion services.
C. Free service from local medical staff. D. Various kinds of TCM textbooks.
10. What is Da Chunhe’s attitude towards the development of TCM?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Negative.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. TCM night markets develop fast in the world.
