There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today — the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances.
For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much influence as the wheel. Then in the early 1800’s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn’t have to explore much any more. They began to work instead to make life better. In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the electric light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today. The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions: the helicopter in 1909, movies with sound in 1926, the computer in 1928, and jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear.
The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They worked very well. They made people healthier and let them live longer lives. By the 1960’s most people could expect to live to be at least 60. By this time most people had a very good life. Of course new inventions went on to be made. But man now had a desire to explore again. The world was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the USA took a step. And then China has made her steps into space.
In 1969 man took his biggest step away from earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning though. New inventions will some day allow us to do things we have never dreamed of.

Failure is probably the most exhausting experience a person ever has. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding.
We experience this tiredness in two ways: as start-up fatigue(疲惫) and performance fatigue. In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it has either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel.
Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first.
Years ago, I was asked to write 102 essays on the great ideas of some famous authors. Applying my own rule, I determined to write them in alphabetical(按字母顺序), never letting myself leave out a tough idea. And I always started the day’s work with the difficult task of essay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works.
Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle. Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that, however hard we work, we fail again and again. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can-then let the unconscious take over.
When planning Encyclopaedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its articles. Nothing like this had ever been done before, and day after day I kept coming up with solutions, but none of them worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable.
One day, mentally exhausted, I wrote down all the reasons why this problem could not be solved. I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. Relived, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep.
An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution clearly in mind. In the weeks that followed, the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind proved correct at every step. Though I worked as hard as before, I felt no fatigue. Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing.
Human beings, I believe must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired.
46. People with start-up fatigue are most likely to ________.
A. delay tasks B. work hard
C. seek help D. accept failure
47. What does the author recommend doing to prevent start-up fatigue?
A. Writing essays in strict order.
B. Building up physical strength.
C. Leaving out the toughest ideas.
D. Dealing with the hardest task first.
48. On what occasion does a person probably suffer from performance fatigue?
A. Before starting a difficult task.
B. When all the solutions fail.
C. If the job is rather boring.
D. After finding a way out.
49. According to the author, the unconscious mind may help us ________.
A. ignore mental problems B. get some nice sleep
C. gain complete relief D. find the right solution
50. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Success Is Built upon Failure
B. How to Handle Performance Fatigue
C. Getting over Fatigue: A Way to Success
D. Fatigue: An Early Sign of Health Problems
D
As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedrooms drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.
Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long-hours work culture to make more money to buy more things is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or relaxation. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them.
Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs (近郊), leaving their two children with a nanny (保姆). Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock, and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.
Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm here,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.”
Liz however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”
51. What do the first two paragraphs tell us?
A. People seldom work long hours to make money.
B. People hardly buy more things than necessary.
C. People are sure everything they own is in the right place.
D. People realize there is more to life than just making money.
52. When Daniel was a reporter, he ________.
A. lived in central London B. disliked his job C. missed his children D. was well paid
53. Daniel and Liz both agree that the move to the farm ________.
A. was easy to organize B. has improved family life
C. was extremely expensive D. has been a total success

A. repairing your car by yourself
B. spending money carefully
C. moving out to the countryside to live a simpler and better life
D. living in a big house in the suburbs and dining out once a week
55. What does the underlined “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Child-caring. B. Liz’s advice. C. Downshifting. D. Liz’ job.
四.阅读表达(10分)
I was still a fresh graduate from high school; I got a chance to work. During my first day of work, I came early. I was the first one to arrive in the office. Perhaps it was due to excitement. I had performed well in my given tasks. Everything went smoothly in my work. The passion when I started was still the same passion I am feeling until now. Furthermore, I didn't forget to do well in my studies. In fact, I still managed to review my notes, to become active in classes and to score high in tests.
I had learned new things as I started working there. Dealing and interacting with people were some of the remarkable learning I had. Moreover, it was also very fulfilling when I had helped my parents diminish their finances in my own ways.
It is not that easy to study while working. There are truly pressures in between them. Sometimes, deadlines of the school project and errand(差事) from the boss go together. Sometimes, there are misunderstandings between colleagues. There are just some sacrifices and challenges of becoming a working student.
Yet, it is my will and I am very happy with it because I am learning and growing. They say, "You can’t serve two masters at a time." It is possible, but it is a challenge. I know that I can balance studies and work. Moreover, I know that I can still keep my relationships with my family, friends and loved ones. I know that I can still share my talents despite my busy life. I just enjoy everything because every moment of being working student is a truly remarkable experience.

C Leaving out the toughest ideas.
D. Dealing with the hardest task first.
48. On what occasion does a person probably suffer from performance fatigue?
A. Before starting a difficult task.
B. When all the solutions fail.
C. If the job is rather boring.
D. After finding a way out.
49. According to the author, the unconscious mind may help us ________.
A. ignore mental problems B. get some nice sleep
C. gain complete relief D. find the right solution
50. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Success Is Built upon Failure
B. How to Handle Performance Fatigue
C. Getting over Fatigue: A Way to Success
D. Fatigue: An Early Sign of Health Problems

Liz, however, is not quite sure.

C. was extremely expensive D. has been a total success

A. repairing your car by yourself
B. spending money carefully
C. moving out to the countryside to live a simpler and better life
D. living in a big house in the suburbs and dining out once a week
55. What does the underlined “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”
