How are typhoons or hurricanes named? The practice of naming these storms has a long history. Before the 20th century, they were named by the time they appeared or the place where they landed. For example, the hurricane that destroyed Galveston in 1900, killing tens of thousands of people, is remembered as the Great Galveston Hurricane.
The practice of giving storms personal names starts from Wragge. He was an Australian meteorologist (气象学家). In the 1890s, he named storms after women, story characters, and politicians that he didn’t like. The modern system of using personal names developed during World War II. At that time, people began using women’s names. Short and quickly understood names were easier to send by the radio and easier to know if there was more than one storm in a given area. In 1953, the system was made formal. And men’s names were added to the list in 1979.
How are storm names picked today? A special group of the World Meteorological Organization keeps lists of names to be used for storms. The names must be short, special, and have something to do with their cultural and geographic areas. For the Atlantic basin (海盆) there are six lists of 21 names each. If there are more than 21 named storms, Greek letters are used. For the Western Pacific/South China Sea basin, names on the lists are given by countries. The lists recur every six years. But if a hurricane or typhoon is especially destructive (破坏性的). The name will not repeat again, such as, Sandy (2012), Haiyan (2013), and Michael (2018).
29. How does the writer begin the article?
A. By listing a number. B. By showing an idea.
C. By asking a question. D. By telling an accident.
30. What does the underlined word “recur” probably mean in last paragraph?
A. Cover. B. Catch. C. Accept. D. Repeat.
31. What is the best title for this article?
A. How Meteorologists Learn About Typhoons and Hurricanes
B. The Most Destructive Typhoons and Hurricanes in History
C. The History and Ways of Naming Typhoons and Hurricanes
D. Different Kinds of Disasters Caused by Typhoons and Hurricanes
【答案】29. C 30. D 31. C

After a little more cheerful talk, Mary Musgrove soon began to feel better. Anne persuaded (劝导) her to eat something, and then her sister Mary was well enough to suggest taking a little walk. They went to the Great House to call on the Musgroves, where they were given a warm welcome by the family.
Mr and Mrs Musgrove were very good-hearted, honest, friendly people, who lived in the old English style, and liked everything around them to be comfortable. Their daughters Henrietta and Louisa had more modern ideas, and, like many other young ladies, wished only to be fashionable and enjoy themselves. They dressed well, had pretty faces and good manners; they were popular with everyone. Anne thought they were two of the happiest people she knew. She preferred the calm enjoyment of books and reading to dancing and parties, but she often wished that she had, with her own sisters, the same perfect understanding and fond attachment which there was between the Musgrove sisters.
Anne knew that she would enjoy her two months at Uppercross. The cottage itself was comfortable. Mary was more pleasant to her than Elizabeth was, and she got on well with Mary’s husband and children. Charles was a pleasant, cheerful man, who enjoyed his sport and his shooting, and did little else. There was very often a little disagreement between him and Mary, but for most of the time it was thought—that they were a happy couple.
A less enjoyable part of staying at Uppercross for Anne, however, was that everybody always came to her with their difficulties, which were very often about Mary. Charles would come to her and say quietly, “I wish you could persuade Mary to stop always imagining herself to be ill all the time.”
And Mary, when she was feeling unhappy, would say to Anne, “I do believe that if Charles saw me dying, he would not think there was anything wrong with me. Please, Anne, try to persuade him that I am really very ill...”
—Adapted from Persuasion

Challenged by Chinese studies
Now the Chinese language is becoming more and more important in China and the rest of the world. As a native speaker, what are good and hard parts of learning Chinese for you?
I am not good at reciting (背诵). When I was in Grade 8, my Chinese teacher asked us to recite a poem by Li Bai. It only had eight lines but I spent three days remembering it. But I don’t always find learning Chinese boring. I sometimes enjoy studying Chinese and writing articles, even though it takes me more time.
—Zeng Xuanhan, 15
I often find it hard to get the meaning of passages or the feelings behind the writer’s words. However, learning Chinese can be fun. Our teacher once organized a poetry (诗歌) activity where we wrote our own poems. This made us more interested in poetry. We improved our understanding of poetry and found the joy of learning Chinese.
—Tao Haoxuan, 14
When it comes to my problems while learning Chinese I always think of my first debate competition. I got ready for it and felt confident at first. But when it was my turn, I had good ideas but couldn’t get them out clearly. But there are also many exciting moments in my Chinese learning experience. Last year, my class put on a drama from our textbook. Without any talent in acting, I took the role of narrator. I tried my best to tell the story in an exciting way. I was very happy to win the first prize at last.

C. The History and Ways of Naming Typhoons and Hurricanes

When it comes to my problems while learning Chinese, I always think of my first debate competition.
—Zhao Yarui, 14
