Human beings have always had an ability to attend to several things at once. Nor is electronic multitasking entirely new! We’ve been driving while listening to car radios since they became popular in the 1930s. But there is no doubt that multitasking has reached a kind of warp speed in the era of Web-enabled computers, when it has become routine to conduct several IM (即时通讯) conversations, watch TV and use the computer all at once.
But what’s the impact of this media consumption? And how are these multitasking devices changing how kids learn, reason and communicate with one another? Social scientists and educators are just beginning to deal with these questions, but the researchers already have some strong opinions.
Although multitasking kids may be better prepared in some ways for today’s fast-paced work placed, many scientists are positively alarmed by the trend. Kids that are instant messaging while doing homework, playing games online and watching TV, aren’t going to do well in the long run. On the positive side, multitasking students tend to be extraordinarily good at finding and using information. And probably because modern childhood centers around visual (视觉的) rather than print media, they are especially skilled at analyzing visual data and images.
Many educators and psychologists say parents need to actively insure that their teenagers break free of uncontrollable engagement with screens and spend time in the physical company of human beings — a growing challenge not just because technology offers such a handy option but because many teenagers and college students say over-committed (任务过量的) schedules drives much of their multitasking.
Just as important is for parents and educator to teach kids that it’s valuable, even essential, to occasionally slow down, unplugs and take time to enjoy life beyond the screen.
46. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. How is multitasking defined in the information age?
B. How do people see new technology and the social change it brings about?
C. How does technology change modern family life?
D. What’s the impact of multitasking on young people?
47. The expression “warp speed” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.
A. low speed B. high speed
C. steady speed D. too much time alone
48. According to some teenagers and college students, what causes their multitasking?
A. Too much tasks and arrangements. B. Too much time alone.
C. Inability to focus. D. Fear of being neglected.
49. According to the passage, which of the following statement is TRUE?
A. Humans have begun to engage in the multitasking behaviors since the information age.
B. Multitasking is a critical skill that students are required to learn at school.
C. Only parents can help their kids to get rid of the multitasking habits.
D. Multitasking may prepare students for the reality of today’s fast-paced work environment.
50. What do educators and psychologist advise parents to do about their multitasking kids?
A. To cut off home internet connection.
B To seek medical treatment.
C. To encourage their kids to have some social life.
D. To help their kids to set personal goals.

D
The older we get the more mature we are, and the more we learn, the more able we are to know what’s right. It seems to be right, but it’s not the case. Sometimes the aging process can obliterate the natural aspects that keep us curious and give us strength to figure out what to do. Children of all ages teach us lessons in our own lives.
When a kid says “That wasn’t nice.” “I don’t like your shirt.” Or “I hate that kind of food!”, we should know it’s a natural reaction to forbid the child to do so. But what he says is true. Children will often see a wrong thing being done and interrupt to say it’s not right.
As adults, we tend to sit on the sidelines and melt into the background rather than hold a strong opinion or say something that might be unpopular.
Kids cry, stomp (跺脚) their feet or yell with excitement while it isn’t socially acceptable for an adult. Letting emotions out and then moving on objectively to deal with something can be great. So jump and yell when you are happy about something. Have a good cry when being upset. Stomp or throw a pillow when you’re alone and need to release.
Most of life becomes a series of dull things once you reach a certain age. Finding pleasure and laughing seem out of place or silly when we gain knowledge or skills. And yet, the evidence on the power of laughter is very great and enjoying something can be the best way to learn it.
“Why is the sky blue?” “How much does an elephant weigh?” There are certain things that the Internet can tell you. But what about learning something in the first hand like doing the science experiment in the kitchen and digging up rocks in the backyard? Don’t stop exploring. Be in the real word and find new learning.
51. What does the underlined word “obliterate” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. be beneficial to B. learn from C. do damage to D. provide for
52. Compared with children, adults are unlikely to ______.
A. express their ambitions freely
B. show their inner feelings directly
C. say something popular with others
D. handle their daily difficulties properly
53. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Life is full of various challenges.
B. Knowledge and skills are quite important.
C. Being joyful has a positive influence.
D. Having fun is the most important thing to kids.
54. What is the last paragraph intended to do?
A. To remind us to protect the environment.
B. To ask us to live in the real world.
C. To persuade us not to rely much on the Internet.
D. To advise us to keep curious about things around us.
55. Which sentence of the following does the author probably agree with?
A. Being adults is different from being children.
B. Being adults doesn’t mean we are smarter.
C. It’s not easy for children to grow into adults.
D. It’s necessary to listen to what the children say.

【53题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段第二句和第三句“Letting emotions out and then moving on objectively to deal with something can be great. So jump and yell when you are happy about something.(释放情绪,然后客观地处理一些事情是很好的。所以,当你对某事感到高兴时,就跳起来大喊大叫。)”可知,快乐有积极的影响。故选C。

阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
Last summer, Katie Steller pulled off' the freeway on her way to work. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. Rolled down her window.
“Hey!” she shouted. “I'm driving around giving free haircuts. Do you want one right now?” “Actually,” the man said, “I was really hoping to get a haircut.”
“I'll be right back,” Steller said. She drove off, went to the salon she owns, and recruited one of her stylists to help her load a red chair into her car. Then the two of them drove back, and trimmed the man's curly graying hair. He told them about growing up in Mississippi, about moving to be closer to his adult children, and now he still talks to his mom every day. After Steller was done, the man looked in a mirror, “I look good!” he said.
To date, Steller has given 30 or so such haircuts to people around the city. These people are all living on the margins, and she is keenly aware of the power of her cleanup job.
“It's more than a haircut,” she says, “I want it to be a gateway, to show value and respect, but also to get to know people and build relationships.” Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. “Part of what broke my heart was just how lonely people looke,” she says. “I thought maybe I'd go around and ask if people want free haircuts. I can't fix their problems, but maybe I can help them feel less alone for a moment.”
Steller listens to people's stories of loss, addiction, and struggle to get back on their feet. The attention apparently works. When she was cutting a woman's hair one day, someone drove by and yelled, “You look amazing!” The woman in the chair smiled. “I'm not invisible,” she exclaimed, “thought I was invisible. Look, people see me!”
And it all began with a belief in simple acts of kindness, such as a free haircut. “The way you show up in the world matters,” says Steller. “You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give them.”
56. Why did Steller stop at a traffic light? (No more than 13 words)
57. What did the man do when his hair was being trimmed? (No more than 10 words)
58 How did the man feel after a free haircut? (No more than 5 words)
59. What does the underlined words in paragraph 6 probably mean? (No more than 9 words)
60. What do you think of Katie Steller? And why? (No more than 18 words)
【答案】56. Because she wanted to help the man sitting there get a haircut.
57. The man told his story.

My grandfather was a teacher. He was the headmaster of a school for boys between the ages of thirteen and eighteen. I know that he was a kind and gentle man at heart, because when I was young, he gave me presents, and seated me on his knees, and told me stories, but I believe the boys at his school were afraid of him.
At school, when he walked into a room full of noisy boys, there was silence at once. When he looked at a boy with a certain look in his eyes, that boy went red in the face, and looked down at his shoes.

The older we get, the more mature we are, and the more we learn, the more able we are to know what’s right.
