The origin of Land Art can be traced to Stonehenge in the United Kingdom and the Nazca Lines in southern Peru. But the modern movement itself didn’t emerge until the late 1960s. Below are some artworks that help tell the story of Land Art as it has expanded and evolved since then.
A Line Made By Walking
One of the first examples of Land Art, A Line Made By Walking, was created by Richard Long in 1967 by walking the same path again and again in Wiltshire, United Kingdom. Since it was unable to be commercialized, it was applauded for having changed the definition of what art could be.
Spiral (螺旋) Jetty
Another noticeable piece of Land Art is undoubtedly Spiral Jetty, which was created by Robert Smithson in April of 1970. Using natural materials including rocks and earth, Smithson built a 457-meter-long spiral off the shore of the Great Salt Lake in Utah.
The Lightning (闪电) Field
The most unusual Land Art work of all is The Lightning Field created by Walter de Maria in 1977. She used unconventional materials to draw attention to the power of nature. The piece consisted of 400 steel poles arranged in a desert ringed by mountains in New Mexico to attract lightning during storms. Due to the unpredictability of nature, this display could take on many forms depending on the weather.
Washington’s Crossing
In 1969, Bill Beckley went to the location of George Washington’s famous crossing of the Delaware River during the Revolutionary War and repeated the action while pouring white paint behind him. This work built a sort of bridge between Land Art which tries to promote a more positive relationship between the audience and the earth and the so-called Narrative Art in which story is the top priority.
1.What is true about A Line Made By Walking according to the text?
A.It was inspired by the Nazca Lines. B.It is one of the earliest Land Art works.
C.It became popular for its commercial value. D.It was made by Robert Smithson in the 1960s.

A.They can be easily commercialized. B.They were both created in the 1960s.
C.They use natural elements or rely on nature. D.They were designed to tell historical stories.
3.What can we infer from the passage about Land Art?
A.It was first created in the United States. B.It tends to break traditional art boundaries.
C.It requires advanced technological support. D.It has always been focused on commercial value.

Dear Mr. Watson,
CLAIMAL54323432-STORM DAMAGE TO ROOF
I received a cheque for $623 dated 26 January in payment of my recent claim. However, I wish to tell you how upset I have been by the way your Claims Assessor, Mr. Michael Tan, handled this claim.
When Mr. Tan first called me, he specifically told me that he believed I had been overcharged, and he would expect to pay that price for work on a double garage, rather than a single garage like mine. Mr. Tan suggested that I neither use nor recommend the contractor again. He continued to tell me it was unlikely for me to receive full payment. Never during this conversation did he mention that the reason for not receiving full payment was because of the nature of my insurance policy.
Consequently, I wrote to Mr. Lance Ashe to complain about his pricing, stating that I was very upset thinking that he could have taken advantage by overcharging a 73-year-old woman. Mr. Ashe telephoned me immediately and explained his charges in detail. He later reported back to me that Mr. Tan explained that I would not receive full payment because of the type of policy I hold, which does not cover wear and tear. This was the first time this issue had been brought to my attention, so you can imagine my surprise.
When I received Mr. Tan’s letter of 2 February, this situation was explained. If this had been explained in the first place I would have accepted it and would not have questioned Mr. Ashe’s charges. Instead, by telling me initially that I had been overcharged for this work, he caused a great deal of upset, not only for me but also for Mr. Ashe.
I believed this claim was handled badly by Mr. Tan from the beginning. Therefore, a great deal of embarrassment has been caused over this issue.
I felt you should know how disappointed and upset I am. I trust you will look into this and ensure that such claims are handled more appropriately in the future.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Richard

Our brains need challenging tasks to stay sharp. And thankfully, there’s an app for that — many, actually. Alvaro Fernando, CEO of market-research firm Sharp-Brains, suggests trying ones other than the games you usually play. “If you’re doing something that brings novelty, variety and a level of effort, you’ re on the right path.”
Here are three apps to get your brain going — and three more to help it gear back down.
BrainHQ
This app serves up short tests to identify your weak spots — be it attention, memory or brain speed — and then offers suitable games to help you improve. Studies have shown users have the memory of a person 10 years younger, and have an easier time following a conversation in a crowded room.
Lumosity
Launched in 2007, this popular app with over 100 million users offers dozens of games and puzzles that focus on different brain skills. Completing anagram puzzles will help build your problem- solving abilities, matching games boost memory, and reordering numbers hones your mastery of math.
Cognifit
This app offers fun brain games that help boost a dozen skills, including concentration. memory, reasoning and coordination. (It even promises to help you become a better driver) Additionally, Cognifit features tailored regimens for specific conditions, including Parkinson’s, “chemo brain,” depression and ADHD.
Calm
True to its name, Calm contains breathing exercises, three- to 25- minute guided meditation sessions and stories designed to help you fall asleep. Actor Mathew McConaughy voices one such talk, called “Wonder”.
Headspace
This app has hundreds of guided meditations for every need: two-minute mini-sits, SOS sessions for moments of serious stress and versions for walks. For the end of the day, Headspace offers 45-minute podcasts that use calming visualizations and sounds to help you nod off.
10% Happier
Inspired by ABC news anchor Dan Harris’ bestselling book, this app includes more than 500 guided meditations, as well as short videos to keep you motivated — and the option to text with a coach.

Mysterious. Brilliant. Powerful. These words describe the Inca. Every year, visitors rush to the Incan citadel (城堡) of Machu Picchu (meaning “the ancient peak”) in search of the lost civilization. But getting to this UNESCO World Heritage site isn’t cheap and easy. Here’s how to expertly navigate your way to Peru’s most famous destination.
Hiking to Machu Picchu
* The most famous way to hike to Machu Picchu is along a section of one of the Incan roads built as the empire expanded. Dozens of tour operators offer Inca Trail hikes with varying durations and levels of comfort (though all require camping).
* For those who would like a less crowded experience, there are a number of diverse hiking alternatives, one of which is around Salkantay Mountain, one of the most imposing peaks in the Peruvian Andes. Several tour companies offer the treks, but Apus Peru offers an express Salkantay trek, which shaves a day off the normal itinerary for those eager to push their physical limits on their way to Machu Picchu.
* Travelers interested in archaeology should consider the Choquequirao trek with a Machu Picchu extension. This itinerary includes spectacular hiking in the less-traveled steep Apurimac Canyon and exploration of the Choquequirao archaeological site before heading for Machu Picchu. Note that the trail is closed in December every year for regular maintenance.
Tips for Visiting
* Getting acclimated: Where you’re coming from is probably much lower than Machu Picchu. We highly recommend you go to Aguas Calientes first, and spend a night getting used to it before exploring Machu Picchu. Meanwhile, avoid alcohol and physical exertion to help your body slowly adjust to the thinner air.
* Entrance tickets: If you’re traveling independently, you can buy individual entrance tickets, though you should note that you’ll be required to hire a local guide before entering the site. If you book a tour package through a travel agency, all services should be included. Moreover, all entry tickets are timed, allowing entrance on the hour, and you’re allowed to stay at the site for up to four hours.
* Bring: Water and a rain jacket, even if it looks like a beautiful sunny day. And speaking of sun, remember that the ozone layer over Peru is compromised. That, combined with the elevation, makes the sun extremely strong, so wear a hat and use high SPF sunscreen.
* Don't bring: Drones, walking sticks, trekking poles or umbrellas since they’re all prohibited at Machu Picchu. Travelers who require sticks for mobility can bring them in but only with protective rubber tips over the ends.
1.Which of the following hiking options is recommended for those who want to avoid crowds?
A.Hiking along the Inca Trail.
B.Trekking around Salkantay Mountain.
C.The express Salkantay trek offered by UNESCO.
D.The Choquequirao trek with a Machu Picchu extension.
2.What can be inferred from the passage about the Choquequirao trek?
A.It is closed throughout the year for maintenance.
B.It is more popular than the Salkantay Mountain trek.
C.Travelers on this trek can explore an archaeological site.
D.It is the most challenging hiking route to Machu Picchu.
3.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To compare different ways of traveling to Machu Picchu.
B.To emphasize the importance of protecting Machu Picchu.
C.To introduce the history and culture of the Inca civilization.
D.To provide a comprehensive guide on how to travel to Machu Picchu.
Cochlear Implants — Life Beyond Hearing Aids
Feeling frustrated and sometimes even exhausted from listening? Whether it happens suddenly or gradually, hearing loss can affect you physically and emotionally. Cochlear implants work differently than hearing aids. Rather than amplifying sound, they use sophisticated software and state-of-the-art electronic components to provide access to the sounds you’ve been missing.
Q: How do implants differ from hearing aids?
Hearing aids help many people by making the sounds they hear louder. Unfortunately as hearing loss progresses, sounds need not only to be made louder, but clearer. Cochlear implants can help give you that clarity, especially in noisy environments. Hearing aids are typically worn before a cochlear implant solution is considered.
Q: Are cochlear implants covered by Medicare?
Yes, Medicare and most private insurance plans routinely cover cochlear implants.
Q: What does a cochlear implant system look like?
There are two primary components of the Cochlear™ Nucleus® System — the implant that is surgically placed underneath the skin and the external sound processor. Cochlear offers two wearing options for the sound processor. One is worn behind the ear similar to a hearing aid. The other, the new Kanso® Sound Processor, is a discreet, off-the-ear hearing solution that’s easy to use. The Cochlear Nucleus System advanced technology is designed to help you hear and understand conversations better.
Dr. Jacques Herzog, a cochlear implant surgeon and medical advisor to Cochlear, the world leader in cochlear implants, answers questions about cochlear implants and how they are different from hearing aids.

Dear Cutie-Pie,
Recently, your mother and I were searching for an answer on Google. Halfway through entering the question, Google returned a list of the most popular searches in the world. At the top of the list was “How to keep him interested.”
It surprised me a lot. I scanned several of the countless articles about how to be attractive, when to bring him a beer versus a sandwich, and the ways to make him feel smart and superior.
And I got angry.
Little One, it is not, has never been, and never will be your job to “keep him interested.”
Little One, your only task is to know deeply in your soul — in that unshakeable place that isn’t upset by rejection and loss— that you are worthy of interest.
If you can trust your worth in this way, you will be attractive in the most important sense of the world: you will attract a boy who is both capable of interest and who wants to spend his one life investing all of his interest in you.
Little One, I want to tell you about the boy who doesn’t need to be kept interested, because he knows you are interesting.
I don’t care if he can’t play a bit of golf with me — as long as he can play with the children you give him and revel in all the glorious and frustrating ways they are just like you. I don’t care if he doesn’t follow his wallet — as long as he follows his heart and it always leads him back to you. I don’t care if he is strong — as long as he gives you the space to exercise the strength that is in your heart. I couldn’t care less how he votes — as long as he wakes up every morning and daily elects you to a place of honor in your home and a place of respect in his heart. I don’t care about the color of his skin. I don’t care if he was raised in this religion or that religion or no religion.
Little One, if you come across a man like that and he and I have nothing else in common, we will have the most important thing in common: You.
Because in the end, Little One, the only thing you should have to do to “keep him interested” is to be you.
Your eternally interested guy,
Daddy
1.What truly annoyed the writer when he was surfing on the Internet?
A.“How to keep him interested” is most frequently searched.
B.Girls are rejected constantly even if they try to please boys.
C.People think that for girls, pleasing their boys matters most.
D.The upsetting list of know-how to please boys provided for girls.
2.The father thinks what is of primary importance to his daughter is to __________.
A.keep the boy interested B.know she deserves a boy’s interest
C.attract a boy willing to invest all in her D.find a boy who can please her
3.What’s the main purpose of this letter?
A.To advise his daughter to trust her worth.
B.To show his daughter how to find her true love.
C.To inform his daughter how to keep others interested.
D.To help his daughter find someone with common interests.
Good manners used to mean simple courtesy (礼节) and being kind. Today it seems we may fear doing or saying the wrong thing, and for good reason. Given the power of the Internet, a faux pas (失礼) can mean losing a friend — or your job.
Covering the ins and outs of civil behavior for the past 20-plus years, I have learned that, fortunately, good intentions never go out of style. Even better, science tells us that acts of kindness are infectious: If I treat you right, you’ re more likely to treat the next person better.
TO HOLD OR NOT TO HOLD — THE DOOR
Q: My husband always opens doors for women (he’s over 80). But the younger women cast him a look of pure shock and rush past him without a thank-you. So sad, why has such a basic kindness gone out of style?
— Jo Garcia
A: Let me uncomplicate things: If I’m first to the door, I’m going to pull it open and let you go first, whether you’ re a man or a woman. A push door can be awkward, but I’ll usually go through first (with my most charming “Allow me”) and then hold it for you. I give the same advice to my sister (and all women): First one there opens the door and holds it.
The one time to break the rule: If the person ahead of you needs assistance or is much older, step up and open the door. And for those of us on the receiving end of a door kindness, I hope we all say “Thank you” as we pass by.
NO THANK-YOU NOTES=NO MORE GIFTS?
Q: It especially bothers me when I give a child a gift and there is no acknowledgement from the parent or the child. What are my options?
— Sharon Taft
A: I’m the quick-witted uncle to three nieces, which means I rely on humor to make a point. One time, several weeks after the holidays had gone by, I e-mailed one of the girls: “I can’t thank you enough for thank-you note.” That inspired a quick, and guilty, thank-you from her. Then there was the year I boycotted (抵制) them: no gifts. You bet they noticed, and they did a fine job with their thank-you e-mails once I resumed gift giving. (Yes, e-mail is just fine, especially when compared with the alternative — no response.)
But I learned a lesson, too: I try my best to thank those who express kindness to me, whether it’s a flight attendant helping me with a bag or these same nieces — now young adults — who recently made an amazing dinner for our family. There’s a theory that gratitude begets gratitude. I believe that now.
1.Both Jo Garcia and Sharon Taft are puzzled by __________.
A.what makes young people so rude B.what kindness means to young adults
C.why kindness is not infectious nowadays D.why some good manners are out of date
2.Which statement is the writer most likely to agree with?
A.Men should always hold the door for women.
B.It is always necessary to express our gratitude.
C.Jo should remind her husband of his impoliteness.
D.Being humorous matters more than being polite.
3.What can we infer from the uncle’s experience of boycotting gifts for his nieces?
A.sending a thank-you email is worse than not expressing gratitude at all.
B.The nieces didn’t care about whether they received gifts from their uncle at all.
C.The uncle resumed giving gifts to his nieces after they expressed their appreciation.
D.The absence of gifts made the nieces realize they should have expressed gratitude.
4.This passage is most likely taken from a __________.
A.social science journal B.newspaper advice column
C.celebrity interview script D.interpersonal relationship report

2.What do Spiral Jetty and The Lightning Field have in common?
A.They can be easily commercialized. B.They were both created in the 1960s.
C.They use natural elements or rely on nature. D.They were designed to tell historical stories.
3.What can we infer from the passage about Land Art?
A.It was first created in the United States. B.It tends to break traditional art boundaries.

Dear Mr. Watson,
CLAIMAL54323432-STORM DAMAGE TO ROOF
Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Richard

2.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“When Mr. Tan first called me, he specifically told me that he believed I had been overcharged, and he would expect to pay that price for work on a double garage, rather than a single garage like mine. (当谭先生第一次打电话给我的时候,他明确地告诉我,他认为我被多收了钱,他希望为双层车库而不是像我这样的单间车库支付这个价格。)”以及第三段中“Consequently, I wrote to Mr. Lance Ashe to complain about his pricing, stating that I was very upset thinking that he could have taken advantage by overcharging a 73-year-old woman. (因此,我写信给Lance Ashe先生投诉他的定价,说我非常不安,想到他可能是占了一个73岁妇女的便宜,多收了费。)”可知,谭先生认为作者被多收了钱,并且建议Richard太太不要再使用这个承包商,而这个承包商正是Lance Ashe先生。故划线词指的是“Mr. Ashe”。故选D。

【答案】1.B 2.C 3.D

Your eternally interested guy,
Daddy

3.推理判断题。根据第五段“Little One, your only task is to know deeply in your soul — in that unshakeable place that isn’t upset by rejection and loss — that you are worthy of interest.(小家伙,你唯一的任务就是在你的灵魂深处——在那个不会被拒绝和失去所动摇的地方——知道你值得被关注)”和最后一段“Because in the end, Little One, the only thing you should have to do to “keep him interested” is to be you.(因为最后,小家伙,你唯一要做的就是做你自己,以“让他保持兴趣”)”可推知,这封信的主要目的是建议他的女儿相信自己的价值。故选A。

【导语】本文是一篇应用文。作者结合自身经历与经验,探讨了现代社会中良好举止和感恩的重要性,并通过给两位读者的建议,表明如何通过简单的行为和表达来维持和传递这些美德。
1.细节理解题。根据Jo Garcia的问题“My husband always opens doors for women (he’s over 80). But the younger women cast him a look of pure shock and rush past him without a thank-you. So sad, why has such a basic kindness gone out of style? (我丈夫总是为女性开门(他已经80多岁了)。但年轻的女士们震惊地看了他一眼,连一句感谢都没说就从他身边冲了过去。如此悲哀,为什么这种基本的善良已经过时了)”和Sharon Taft的问题“It especially bothers me when I give a child a gift and there is no acknowledgment from the parent or the child. What are my options? (当我给孩子送礼物时,父母或孩子都没有表示感谢,这尤其让我烦恼。我有什么选择?)”可知,两人都对为什么一些好的礼仪已经过时感到困惑。故选D。
2.推理判断题。根据作者对第一个问题的回答中的“And for those of us on the receiving end of a door kindness, I hope we all say “Thank you” as we pass by. (对于我们这些接受开门恩惠的人,我希望我们在经过时都能说一声“谢谢”)”和对第二个问题的回答中的“One time, several weeks after the holidays had gone by, I e-mailed one of the girls: “I can’t thank you enough for thank-you note.” That inspired a quick, and guilty, thank-you from her. Then there was the year I boycotted them: no gifts. (有一次,在假期过去几周后,我给其中一个女孩发了一封电子邮件:“我对你的感谢信感激不尽。”这句话激起了她迅速而又内疚地道谢。然后有一年我抵制了他们:没有礼物)”可知,作者认为应该对善意的开门行为表达感谢,而且机智地启发自己的侄女去写感谢信。由此推知,作者可能会同意“表达我们的感激之情总是必要的”的观点。故选B。
3.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Then there was the year I boycotted (抵制) them: no gifts. You bet they noticed, and they did a fine job with their thank-you e-mails once I resumed gift giving. (Yes, e-mail is just fine, especially when compared with the alternative — no response.) (有一年我抵制她们:不送礼物。你敢打赌,她们注意到了,而且在我重新开始送礼物后,她们在感谢邮件上做得很好。(是的,电子邮件很好,尤其是与没有回复的替代方式相比))”可知,叔叔抵制送礼物给侄女们,侄女们注意到了这一变化,且在叔叔恢复送礼物时,她们发来了不错的感谢邮件。由此推知,礼物的缺失让侄女们意识到本应表达感激。故选D。
4.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中“Covering the ins and outs of civil behavior for the past 20-plus years, I have learned that, fortunately, good intentions never go out of style. (在过去的20多年里,我了解到,幸运的是,良好的意愿永远不会过时)”可知,在文章中,作者结合自身的经历和经验,回答读者的问题,这是典型的报纸建议专栏,读者可以在这里就各种主题寻求指导。故选B。
