My undergraduate student came to me, seeking guidance once more following a series of unsuccessful attempts. Facing me, her expression showed clear signs of tiredness and, more importantly, a deep-seated sense of disappointment. I offered the usual encouragement: “Persistence is key in research. You need to keep going.” Yet, as I spoke, a sense of discomfort grew within me. She gave a quiet nod and turned slightly away. In the weeks that followed, her visits became irregular until they ceased completely. I made excuses to myself — perhaps her studies had intensified, or her passions had shifted — but internally, I questioned whether I had failed to recognize and respond to the personal challenges she was facing alone.
I became a mentor (导师) during my second year of Ph.D. but didn’t get much guidance on how to do it. I learned only by doing. There were moments I felt proud of. One student started out quiet and unsure, but over time grew into a most independent and confident young researcher. Before graduating, she told me, “You are the reason I stuck with this.” That moment touched me deeply. But so did the other one — the silence, the absences, the slow fade-out. Had I failed her?
It wasn’t until the final year of my Ph.D. that I came across a leaflet for a mentorship training workshop. Skeptical at first, I decided to try it. The program, called Entering Mentoring, brought together graduate students for weekly discussions. For the first time, I had the space to explore the invisible labor and emotional complexity of mentoring. One session asked us to reflect on our own practices. I began to realize what might have been missing in my relationship with the student who had drifted away. I had never invited her to share her goals or concerns. I could have been more attentive to her unspoken struggles.
After the workshop, I began changing how I interacted with students. I now start by asking how they’re doing, not just experimental details. This shift has led to more honest conversations. I’ve learned that good mentors are built through reflection and training. I wish I’d attended that workshop earlier, but I’m grateful I did at all.

根据第一段“My undergraduate student came to me, seeking guidance once more following a series of unsuccessful attempts. In the weeks that followed, her visits became irregular until they ceased completely.(我的一名本科生再次来找我寻求指导,此前她经历了多次失败的尝试。面对她时,她的表情明显透着疲惫,更重要的是,还流露出一种深深的失望情绪。我像往常一样给予她鼓励:“在研究中,坚持不懈是关键。你需要继续努力。”然而,在我讲话的过程中,我内心产生了一种不安的感觉。她微微点了点头,然后稍稍转过身去。在接下来的几周里,她的来访变得不规律起来,最后完全停止了)”以及第三段中“I began to realize what might have been missing in my relationship with the student who had drifted away. I had never invited her to share her goals or concerns. I could have been more attentive to her unspoken struggles.(我开始意识到,我和那个渐行渐远的学生之间,可能缺少了一些东西。我从未邀请她分享自己的目标或顾虑,本应该更留意她那些未说出口的挣扎。)”可知,学生因实验失败而疲惫沮丧,作者只是简单地让她“坚持”,并未关注她内心的挣扎,也没有引导她倾诉顾虑。后续作者的反思也印证了这一点,由此可推断,未被关注的内心挣扎是学生退出的主要原因。故选D。
【42题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“I learned only by doing. There were moments I felt proud of. One student started out quiet and unsure, but over time grew into a most independent and confident young researcher. Before graduating, she told me, “You are the reason I stuck with this.” That moment touched me deeply.(我都是通过实践来学习的。也有一些时刻让我感到自豪。有一位学生起初很安静,也很不自信,但随着时间的推移,她逐渐成长为一个非常独立且自信的年轻研究者。在毕业前,她对我说:“是您让我坚持了下来。”那一刻深深地触动了我)”可知,作者对那位变得独立的学生深感自豪,并为她的成长而感动。故选B。
【43题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The program, called Entering Mentoring, brought together graduate students for weekly discussions. For the first time, I had the space to explore the invisible labor and emotional complexity of mentoring.(这个名为“进入导师角色”的项目将研究生们召集在一起,每周举行讨论会。这是我第一次有机会去探究导师这一角色所蕴含的无形付出以及其中蕴含的复杂情感)”可知,研讨会主要关注指导中的人际关系层面。故选C。
【44题详解】

I could have been more attentive to her unspoken struggles.(我开始意识到,我和那个渐行渐远的学生之间,可能缺少了一些东西。我从未邀请她分享自己的目标或顾虑,本应该更留意她那些未说出口的挣扎)”和最后一段中“I now start by asking how they’re doing, not just experimental details. This shift has led to more honest conversations.(我现在首先会询问他们的近况如何,而不仅仅是探讨实验的细节。
根据最后一段“After the workshop, I began changing how I interacted with students. I now start by asking how they’re doing, not just experimental details. This shift has led to more honest conversations. I’ve learned that good mentors are built through reflection and training. I wish I’d attended that workshop earlier, but I’m grateful I did at all.(在研讨会结束后,我开始改变与学生交流的方式。

Cities worldwide are witnessing a transformation in urban environments. Wildlife populations in cities are not only surviving but often surpassing those in rural areas. Moreover, the variety of species making cities their home has expanded considerably. Urban bird populations in cities like Berlin have increased by over 40% in the past two decades. These aren’t just typical pigeons and sparrows, but hawks and owls, and even non-native species that have found urban environments surprisingly pleasant.
The urban heat island effect, often seen as a negative consequence of city development, creates micro climates many species find irresistible. Warmer temperatures extend growing seasons, provide frost-free zones, and create diverse micro habitats within a single city block, attracting large quantities of wild animals. Urban environments also offer abundant food resources. Raccoons in Toronto have learned some techniques to open garbage cans. The constant availability of food waste and reduced animal hunters in nature create what ecologists call “urban ecological release.”
Urban wildlife’s boom (繁荣) not only reshapes ecosystems but brings health benefits to humans. Studies show people in areas with higher biodiversity experience lower rates of autoimmune diseases. Mental health benefits are equally impressive: urban residents who encounter wildlife report lower stress and improved mood. Yet this boom isn’t all positive. Urban animals are developing behaviour changes — increased aggression and interrupted migration routes. Disease spread is also critical as populations grow more crowded, threatening humans and animals alike.
Forward-thinking cities are pioneering architectural innovations. Green roofs in Copenhagen aren’t just for beauty — they’re functioning ecosystems supporting plants, insects, and birds, cutting energy costs by up to 30% while providing paths for wildlife to move. Wildlife bridges like Ecoduct de Woeste Hoeve let over 5,000 deer cross highways safely, reducing wildlife-vehicle accidents by 80%.
The future of urban wildlife coexistence is promising, driven by tech advances and public awareness — smart tech enables wildlife monitoring, and innovative designs create shared livable spaces. Emerging biotech may revolutionize management: genetic tools help study urban animal adaptation, aiding threatened species. The key is reimagining cities as integrated ecosystems. As urbanization grows, coexistence lessons grow more valuable. The question isn’t whether we can live alongside urban wildlife — it’s whether we dare to embrace the possibilities this partnership offers.
46. What can we know about urban wildlife from Paragraph 1?
A. They have grown in diversity. B. They are mainly from rural areas.
C. They have adapted to urban pollution. D. They tend to avoid human contact.
47. The underlined word “irresistible” in paragraph 2 most probably means ________.
A. changeable B. obvious C. dangerous D. attractive
48. Why is “urban ecological release” mentioned?
A. To present a new ecological concept.
B. To stress the constant city development.
C. To show the wildlife-friendliness of cities.
D. To explain the reduced ecological harm.
49. What can the urban wildlife boom bring?
A. Lowered rates of disease spread.
B. An improved sense of well-being.
C. Impressive migration routes of wildlife.
D. Positive behavioural changes in wildlife.
50. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of urban wildlife?
A. Indifferent. B. Deeply concerned.
C. Strongly opposed. D. Cautiously optimistic.

The mental pain of failure can stimulate you to become better at the activity in which you lack proficiency if you can consider the unpleasant experience as an indicator of personal growth. This is what researchers found when they conducted a field experiment at an improvisation (即兴表演) club. One group of amateur improvisers was instructed to actively seek the feeling of awkwardness. The scholars found that, compared with improvisers who were not given this instruction, the first group was more engaged in the exercise. Instead of seeing the discomfort as something to avoid, they saw it as central to the process and devoted themselves to it.
This has effects on how to improve ordinary life. You can put failure to good use in many other areas of life. If you’re a student, take a class far outside your area of skills and interests, knowing that the struggle to cope with a very novel challenge may improve studying what you do like. Enjoy the difficulty of it and analyze the mistakes you make — and you will almost certainly find that you’re doing even better at your major subjects.
Employers can apply these principles as well. I like the “75/25 rule,” according to which employees spend three-quarters of their time on their assigned task and one quarter helping others outside their area. The short-term cost of this is friction as people struggle with novelty and difficulty, and bosses should take care not to make this worse by being punitive or overly critical. But I have seen the long-term benefit of better motivation in the core assignment, as well as a better flow of information and distribution of new skills across different activities within an enterprise.
The principle of embracing failure can even be applied to happiness itself. None of us wants to be unhappy. But inviting sources of unhappiness into life can be extremely beneficial. Resolve not to be afraid of fear, anger, or sadness. They are normal and natural parts of life, after all. And if you let them, they will help you savor (享受) the joys of life all the more.
51. What did the experiment at the improvisation club find?
A. Avoiding awkwardness improved improvisers’ creativity.
B. Actively embracing awkwardness increased engagement.
C. Professional improvisers performed better than amateurs.
D. Discomfort negatively impacted participants’ motivation.
52. Why does the author advise students to take unfamiliar classes?
A. To reduce their academic pressure. B. To increase their studying interests.
C. To avoid errors in their preferred field. D. To indirectly strengthen their major subjects.
53. What is the long-term effect of the “75/25 rule”?
A. Employees are more motivated and multi-skilled.
B. Competitions among colleagues get more intense.
C. New and difficult assignments become effortless.
D. Conflicts in workplace disappear completely.
54. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To provide a summary of the previous arguments.
B. To present the most important application of the principle.
C. To encourage a shift in readers’fundamental attitude towards emotions.
D. To warn about the potential dangers of pursuing happiness directly.
55. Which is the best title of the text?
A. The Different Ways to Avoid Failure. B. The Benefits of Doing Things You’re Bad at.
C. The Advice on How to Seek Happiness. D. The Reasons Why You’re in Negative Moods.
B 52. D 53. A 54. C 55. B

A grandmother cooks chicken. A group of kids, ages 8 to 14, watch her make the dish. This cooking class is part of a “Summer Camp” in Southern California. At this camp, grandmas are in charge. Each week, they teach young campers how to cook a new dish and do crafts.
“Loneliness is something that seniors are challenged with, and they love having younger people around them,” said Zainab, who works at Olive Community Services that brings older adults together and created the camp.
During the last week of the camp, a 9-year-old Janna learned how to use a sewing machine and make pockets. The camper had pressed hard on the machine’s pedal, making the needle move quickly. “Slowly, slowly,” Rahim, a grandma teaching the sewing class, said to her. The girl smiled when she made it. Rahim said the camp is “filling a gap” for kids. Many schools don’t teach these skills like cooking and sewing.
Rahim also doesn’t get to spend much time with her grandchildren because they don’t live close. “It is heartwarming to be able to interact with those who love being around you,” she said.
The summer camp was organized through a partnership with the Golden Connections Club started by a 14-year-old high school student Leena to encourage teens and seniors to interact. She noticed that many students didn’t have the chance to spend as much time with their grandparents. She also learned about challenges faced by senior adults, such as unfair treatment.
The club organizes monthly lunches at Leena’s school. They invite the seniors to the school and discuss topics where both groups can learn from each other. One of the most valuable lessons they’ve shared with her is to live in the moment, and this has taken on new meaning for Leena. “The people we have right now, they’re not going to be with us forever,” she said.
56. What do grandmas mainly do at the Summer Camp? (No more than 10 words)
______________________________________________________________________________
57. What does the underlined phrase “filling a gap” in Paragraph 3 mean? (No more than 5 words)

58. Why did Leena start the Golden Connections Club? (No more than 12 words)
______________________________________________________________________________
59. What lesson did Leena learn from the seniors? (no more than 10 words)
______________________________________________________________________________
60. Besides cooking, what other life skill do you think is important to learn from the elderly? Give one example and explain briefly. (No more than 20 words)
______________________________________________________________________________
56. They teach kids how to cook and do crafts.
57. Teaching missing practical skills./Making up for the skills.
58 Because she wanted to encourage teens and seniors to interact./Because she wanted to encourage interaction between teens and seniors.
59. To live in the moment/To treasure the present./She should live in the moment.
Learning gardening from the elderly is important, because it teaches us patience and how to care for living things.
由文章第一段中“At this camp, grandmas are in charge. Each week, they teach young campers how to cook a new dish and do crafts.(在这个夏令营里,奶奶们是活动的主导者。每周,她们都会教营里的孩子们学做一道新菜式,还会带着大家动手做手工。)”可知,祖母们在夏令营主要是教孩子们如何烹饪和做手工艺品。故答案为They teach kids how to cook and do crafts.
由文章第三段“During the last week of the camp, a 9-year-old Janna learned how to use a sewing machine and make pockets. The camper had pressed hard on the machine’s pedal, making the needle move quickly. “Slowly, slowly,” Rahim, a grandma teaching the sewing class, said to her. The girl smiled when she made it. Rahim said the camp is “filling a gap” for kids. Many schools don’t teach these skills like cooking and sewing.(夏令营的最后一周,9岁的詹娜学会了使用缝纫机,还亲手缝制出了口袋。 Teaching missing practical skills./Making up for the skills.
由文章倒数第二段中“The summer camp was organized through a partnership with the Golden Connections Club started by a 14-year-old high school student Leena to encourage teens and seniors to interact.(这个夏令营是通过与由14岁的高中生莉娜创办的金色连接俱乐部合作组织的,旨在鼓励青少年和老年人进行互动。)” Because she wanted to encourage teens and seniors to interact./Because she wanted to encourage interaction between teens and seniors.
由文章最后一段“One of the most valuable lessons they’ve shared with her is to live in the moment, and this has taken on new meaning for Leena.(他们与她分享的最有价值的教训之一就是活在当下,这对莉娜来说有了新的意义。)” To live in the moment/To treasure the present./She should live in the moment.
Learning gardening from the elderly is important, because it teaches us patience and how to care for living things.

61. Because he was determined to master the skill, he engaged himself in practicing the piano daily.
____________________________________________________________________________
Determined to master the skill, he engaged himself in practicing the piano daily.
Determined to master the skill, he engaged himself in practicing the piano daily.
62. Online learning platforms are widely used by students. Access to quality education is crucial for the students.
____________________________________________________________________________
Online learning platforms are widely used by students, for whom access to quality education is crucial.
Online learning platforms are widely used by students, for whom access to quality education is crucial.
63. We should protect the environment for future generations. It is extremely significant.(改为It做形式主语的主语从句)
____________________________________________________________________________
It is extremely significant that we protect the environment for future generations.##It is extremely significant that we should protect the environment for future generations.
It is extremely significant that we (should) protect the environment for future generations.

Call to Action: Preserve Our Traditional Culture
Dear fellow students,
With global cultural exchange deepening, exceptional traditional Chinese cultures like calligraphy and Peking Opera are losing their appeal among teenagers. Yet they are the essence of our nation’s history and they carry profound wisdom and spiritual values.
To reverse this trend, I urge you to join practical activities. First, attend weekly calligraphy workshops to feel the charm of Chinese characters. Additionally, take part in traditional festival sharing sessions, where you can introduce customs like Mid-Autumn moon-gazing to peers. What counts most is that we can use platforms like Douyin to promote cultural influence.
Inheriting these cultures boosts our confidence and enriches our lives. Let’s act now, become responsible inheritors, and pass on our precious cultural heritage!
Sincerely,
Li Jin

41. What primarily caused the student’s withdrawal according to paragraph 1?
A. Demanding research challenges. B. Heavy academic workload.
C. Repetitive failures in research. D. Unaddressed inner struggles.
42. According to Paragraph 2, how did the author feel about the student who became independent?
A. He regretted not guiding her properly.
B. He was deeply proud and moved by her growth.
C. He was surprised by her sudden transformation.
D. He considered her achievement a result of pure luck.
43. What did the workshop mainly focus on?
A. Developing academic research skills.
B. Encouraging discussions among graduate students.
C. Exploring the interpersonal aspects of mentoring.
D. Demonstrating diverse personal mentoring approaches.
44. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Strict and intelligent. B. Responsible and reflective.
C. Thoughtful but self-doubting. D. Disciplined but inexperienced.
45. Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?
A. A personal story about the difficulties and rewards of supervising students in science.
B. The process of how a training program helped solve a common problem in academic labs.
C. The realization that effective mentoring requires attention to students’ emotional needs.
D. A comparison between two different mentoring styles and their impacts on students.

D
I like the “75/25 rule” according to which employees spend three-quarters of their time on their assigned task and one quarter helping others outside their area.
