Though I am a female scientist,I have face blindness.I can see faces, but the individual details, such as
the distance between the eyes or the shape of the nose, are fuzzy. As a result, recognizing faces-something so
instant and unconscious for most-is a major challenge.
Over the years I developed my own ways of dealing with the problem. To distinguish people,I relied
on cues-like the way a person walks and a habitual lunch spot. There were many embarrassing moments as I
pursued my career. But overall,I was managing.
Then,I often worked at home.As interactions moved online,suddenly everyone became a stranger.For
my peace of mind,I needed to get to the bottom of why I see the world so differently from most people.
Through a combination of luck and privilege,I connected with a specialist who gave me an official
diagnosis(!ven though I had already essentially diagnosed myself,it was a reliefto have a professional put
a formal name to it.
More importantly,I realized I had to face reality. Now if I'm going to an event where I'm expected to
know people,I send an e-mail explaining that if I ignore them,it won't be intentional.I've found that people
are less likely to be offended when they know beforehand.
But sometimes I feel like something out of a science-fiction plot.A recent presentation titled You
Don't Belong Here was intended to show how some environments can be exclusionary(and what can be
done to address that.As the presenters alternated between acting out scenes and commenting on them,I
left feeling exactly as the title said.It would have been a great help if they had explained at the beginning
that they were going to switch roles.
People with disabilities exist, and we need our co-workers to think broadly about accessibility and inclusion.
Let's create an environment where we all feel like we belong.
54.What is wrong with the author?
A.She can't tell faces apart.
B.She can't see faces instantly.
C.She lacks facial expressions.
D.She always keeps a straight face.
55.What made the author decide to seek professional help?
A.Her wrong self-diagnosis.
B.The rise in online interactions.
C.A specialist's recommendation.
D.The chance of a promotion.
56.Which is mentioned as the author's way of handling face blindness?
A.Sending others an e-mail ahead oftime.
B.Learning the style people like to wear.
C.Meeting more friends in regular places.
D.Drawing co-workers'faces in a notebook.
57.What can we infer from paragraph 5?
A.The author is bad at getting along with others.
B.Science fiction is an inspiration for the author.
C.The author loses a sense ofbelonging in some environments.
D.Having face blindness makes the author stand out in public.
A head of hair can be powerful. In the hands of a skilled siylist, your hair can help you boost
your self-confidence,express your unique personality and land a new job. However,in the hand.oi Matter of
5
Trust,an ecological non-profit organization that collects and recycles waste fibers, your hair might help save the
environment.
For over 20 years,Matter of Trust has been collecting hair and fur donations worldwide for the purpose of
making"hair mats()"that can assist with oil spill clean-ups at sea.Typically, oil spills on land are cleaned
up using plastic mats that are effective but environmentally problematic. After all, plastic is made from fossil fuels.
Using it to clean up oil therefore requires drilling for even more oil.Hair and fur,on the other hand, are non-
poisonous, renewable and able to take in liquids easily.Human hair, for example, can absorb about five times its
weight in oil.
"It makes more sense to use a renewable natural resource to clean up oil spills than it does to drill for
more oil to use to clean up,"says Lisa Gautier, who established Matter of Trust in1998 and designed the
organization's Clean Wave program in 2001 when an Ecuadorian oil tanker carrying 243,000 gallons of diesel oil
ran aground on San Cristobal Island. And the leaking fuel threatened sea creatures.
Eager to help with the disaster,Gauticr teamed up with hairstylist Phillip MeCrory, who tried to employ
hair to absorb oil in 1989.Together,they designed mats made of human hair and animal fur which Matter of
Trust continues to produce today in San Francisco, and at local centers in 17 different countries.
To date, the organization has produced over 40,000 hair mats. The product has been shared to clean up
not only serious oil spills()but also non-emergencies like oil leaks from vehicles and machinery. However,
hair mats can only be used once and aren't very effective at absorbing oil from sand.Still, hair mats are a
surprising tool in the fight for a cleaner planet.
58.How are the advantages ofhair mats showed?
A.By providing examples.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By citing experts'remarks.
D.By presenting research results.
59.What made Lisa Gautier launch the Clean Wave program?
A.An oil spill emergency.
B.Her love for sea animals.
C.Ahairstylist's proposal
D.Globally growing oil spills.
60.What do we know about Matter of Trust?
A.It is busy cleaning the land.
B.It sells hair mats worldwide.
C.It is funded by the goverment
D.It has expanded into many countries
61.What does the author want to say about hair mats from the last paragraph?
A.They can work efficiently on beaches as well.
B.They have been widely used in our daily life.
C.They are imperfect but meaningful products.
D.They are mainly applied to the vehicle industry.

Humans act with purpose, but much is still unknown about how we becomc purposeful agents-that is,how
we develop the ability to willfuliy make things happen. In a recent study to explore agency's mysterious roots,
we tried to catch infants()in the act of discovering their own agency, thereby revealing the process of agency
formation.
Researchers place a baby into a cradle with a mobile suspended above. Then a scientist ties one end of
a string to the mobile and the other to the infant's foot. Now if the baby moves, the toy will, too.By
observing babies in this setup, scientists can watch as the infants learn and recall a simple cause-and-effect
interaction:.kick a foot and the mobile moves.
As predicted by the researchers, infants kicked significantly more wh:n their foot was tethered()to the
mobile than when it was not. However, when an experimenter pulled the string to make the mobile move instead,
6
infants moved less than when the mobile was at rest.Furthermore, when we freed the babies'foot from the
mobile, they kept on kicking at higher rate to makc the toy respond and were visibly frustrated when that did not
happen.
Our observations also pointed to a notable pattern:The babies'initial movements consisted of twisting
and pushing without clear direction. But once tethered to the mobile, the more intensely they moved, the more
their attention was drawn to the effect their kicking had on it.At some point, the infants must have figured out
that they had agency, thus the aimless movements became intentional action-a highly coordinated exchange
between the tethered infant and the mobile.
The baby-mobile study emphasizes how understanding the relationship between an organism and its
environment is essential to uncovering the origins of directed behavior. The experience of agency emerges
only when an organism senses it is coupled to its environment. In this way of thinking, the interaction and
relationship between the two are crucial for purpose to arise.
62.What can we learn about agency according to the text?
A.It is an inborn ability without lcarning.
B.It embodies in babies the most evidently.
C.It exists in all aspects ofour daily life.
D.It is a resonance with our surroundings.
63.How did the researchers make the experiment convincing?
A.By predicting multiple possible results.
B.By tracking babies'behaviour precisely:
C.By setting up comparative experiments.
D.By building proper interpretation model.
64.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.Analysis ofexperimental phenomena.
B.Supplement to experimental details.
C.Explanation ofexperimental design.
D.Summary ofexperimental outcomes.
65.What does the underlined word"coupled"in paragraph 5 mean?
A.linked.
B.separated.
C.recognized.
D.resisted
66.What is the main purpose ofthe text?
A.To uncover the process of agency formation.
B.To report a cutting-edge discovery about agency.
C.To guide people on how to take advantage ofagency.
D.To clarify the importance ofenvironment to creatures.
第二节(共4小题,满分10分.67-69每题2分,70题4分.)
阅读下列短文,根据题目要求回答问题,第67-69小题每题答案不超过5个词,第70题答案不超过
20词.
Habit formation is the process by which behaviors become automatic.People develop countless habits
as they explore the world, whether they are aware of them or not.Understanding how habits take shape may
be helpful in changing bad habits.
Habits are built through learning and repetition.A person.is thought to develop a habit in the course
of pursuing goals by beginning to associate certain cues()with behavioral responses that help meet the
goal.Over time, thoughts of the behaviour and ultimately the behaviour itself are likely to be triggered()by
these cues.
A "habit loop()"is a way of describing several related elements that produce habits. These elements
are called the cue,the routine, and the reward. For example, stress could serve as a cue that one responds to by
eating, which produces the reward-the reduction of stress. While a routine involves repeated behaviour,
it's not necessarily performed in response to a deep-ronted urge,as a habit is.
Old habits can be difficult to shake, and healthy habits are often harderi develop. But through repetition.
it's possible to form new habits.T amount of time needed to build a habit will depend on multiple f.ctors,
7
including the individual and the intended behaviour. While you are able to pick up a new habit in a few wecks,it
takes many months to build a healthy habit.
Take some time to think about what leads to bad habits and re-evaluate what you get out ofthem (or don't).
Consider and keep in mind why you want to make a change, including how the change reflects your values.
67.How are habits built?
68.In what way is a routine different from a habit?
69.Why is building a healthy habit hard to develop?
70.What benefit(s)have you got from one ofyour good habits?
四、写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节概要写作(满分10分)
"Stop the world,I want to get off!"This popular expression refers to a feeling of panic,or stress, which
makes people want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and become calm again.Stress is one ofthe most
common causes of health problems in modern life.Too much stress results in physical, emotional and mental
health problems.
There are numerous physical effects of stress.Stress can affect the heart. It can increase the pulse rate, make
the heart miss beats, and can cause high blood pressure.Stress can affect the respiratory()system.It can
lead to asthma(,)and cause a person to breathe too fast, resulting in a loss of important carbon dioxide.
Stress can affect the stomach. It can cause stomachaches and problems of digesting food. These are only a few
examples ofthe wide range of illnesses and symptoms resulting from stress.
Emotions are also easily affected by stress.People suffering from stress often feel anxious. They may have
panic attacks and feel tired all the time. When people are under stress, they often overreact to little problems. For
example,a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may yell at a child for dropping a glass ofjuice.
Stress can make people angry, moody or anxious.
Long-term stress can lead to a variety of serious mental illnesses.Depression,an extreme feeling of sadness
and hopelessness, can be the result of continued and increasing stress.Alcoholism and other addictions often
develop as a result of overuse of alcohol or drugs to try to relieve stress. If stress is allowed to continue, then one's
mental health is put at risk.
It is obvious that stress is a serious problem. It attacks the body.It affects the emotions.Untreated,it may
eventually result in mental illness.Stress has a great influence on our health, our feelings and our minds. So,
reduce stress:stop the world and res:for a while.
