Walking home from school,I enjoy my day. Each day I stop to listen to music coming
from the climbing plant.The sparrows'()song,loud and glorious,fills the air.The
climbing plant dances gently below a leafless tree, decorating around the lower trunk like a
celebration.Sparrows fly nervously in and out, tapping on the branches. This climbing plant is
a home for them, sheltering an entire group. But this scene is no longer ubiquitous.Numbers
have decreased by almost 70%in the UK since 1970.Sparrows make their homes near human
places and finding a tree like this is a blessing.Happily, the climbing plant is still full of chatter
and twitter.
In Greek legend, sparrows are sacred and often linked with the goddess (Aphrodite,
symbolizing true love and spiritual connection.I wonder how many people look at sparrows
and feel that depth of connection. All birds live brightly in our imagination, connecting us to
the natural world, opening up all kinds of creativity
As I stand there,feathered sparrows chatting with each other,there is a spark.Noticing
nature is the start of it all.Slow down to listen,to watch.Take the time, despite mountains of
homework.
Take the time to observe nature,to lose yourself in its patterns, structures, happenings and
rhythms. It is how mathematicians and scientists are trained.Alan Turing studied the patterns in
nature:the arrangement of petals on the flower, spots on a leopard and lines on a zebra. He was
looking for a mathematical formula (for the development of cells in living things.Nature
sparks creativity. All we have to do is start with the question,Why?The way my mind races in
nature,or even when"daydreaming"is way more productive than the work I do in school.
I center myself by thinking and thinking while closely watching the movements of

Most of us learn how to ride a bike during childhood. But as we grow older, many of us
stop riding and put those once-beloved bikes away.Years later, when we discover these old
things and jump on,it's as if we never stopped biking. This is surprising because our memories
fall short in so many other cases, such as remembering the name of a place or a person we once
knew or where we put our keys.So how is it that we can ride a bicycle when we haven't done
so in years?
The answer has to do with what kinds of memories we're making.Neuropsy chologist(
经心理学家)Boris Suchan explains that we have two different kinds of long-term memory:
declarative and procedural.Within declarative memory are two subtypes:episodic (
and semantic memory.Episodic memory is the recall of an event in your life, like
going to a concert or falling into a hole.Semantic memory, also known as factual memory,is
knowing that World War II ended in 1945.
But acquiring a skill is part of procedural memory.Learning how to drive, play a sport,or
ride a bike are all activities that are stored in another part of the brain. In theory,it would be
possible to suffer a brain injury that could steal your memory of riding a bike but keep the part
that knows how to ride the bike.Supposing the brain part which processes (
non-declarative memory,is unharmed,you'll be able to ride a bicycle without incident.But
why is procedural memory so strong? That's less clear to science, although one reason,Suchan
writes,is that the areas in the brain where movement patterns are formed experience less nerve
cell turnover(更新),helping to keep recall of those actions.
That's why you can always jump on a bike but not necessarily remember that movie.Do
you still remember the moment when you first learned how to ride a bike?
28.What does the underlined phrase"fall short'in paragraph I probably mean?
A.Fail.
B.Match.
C.Flash.
D.Vary.
29.Which of the following belongs to semantic memory?
5
A.Mastering swimming skills.
B.Recalling a birthday party.
C.Knowing the capital of France.
D.Picking up a foreign language.
30.What can be learned about procedural memory in paragraph 3?
A.It is less likely to be forgotten.
B.It is easily damaged by brain injuries.
C.It is well-understood by scientist.
D.It has more frequent nerve cell turnover.
31.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce a new discovery.
B.To argue for a particular viewpoint.
C.To describe a personal experience.
D.To explain reasons for a phenomenon.

Over breakfast this morning, after I enjoyed a short chat with Mia,my new Spanish study
buddy,I felt that I had mastered more than what I gained from textbook exercises.Mia,
however,is an AI that I created to take advantage of a phenomenon called the"protege effect."
According to several studies,we learn more effectively when we teach someone else about the
topic we've just explored-even if that person doesn't really exist.
Learning through teaching was relatively slow to gain popularity until a group of scientists
in the United States began to test its effectiveness. In one of the first experiments,Catherine
Chase and colleagues tested on 62 eighth-graders who were tasked with using a computer
program to study the biological changes that occur when we get a fever.
Over two lessons, they had to read a text and then create a mind-map explaining the
different processes and the relationships between them. For half the teens, the mind-map
presented the result of self-study.The others were told that their mind-map would help to teach
a virtual(虚拟的)character.
It was not a big difference, but the students in the role of teacher scored significantly better.
This increased participation had a big influence:both the amount they got and the depth of their
understanding. At the end of the two classes, participants who had played the role of teacher
had kept much more of the material, with much stronger performance on test questions.
Chase's team named this the "protege effect'and it has since been studied many times.
These later studies suggest that learning by teaching is more powerful than other mnemonic(
techniques like self-testing.If we know that others are going to learn from us,we feel
a sense of responsibility to provide the right information,so we make a greater effort to fill in
the gaps in our understanding and correct any mistaken thoughts.Sharing our knowledge then
helps to strengthen what we have learned. Why not try to apply the protege effect into practice?
32.Why does the author mention Mia in paragraph 1?
A.To stress the importance ofAI.
B.To share a story of a study buddy.
C.To introduce a phenomenon about study.
D.To show how to finish textbook exercises
33.What was different about the two groups in the experiment?
6
A.They differ in learning time.
B.They differ in learning tools.
C.They differ in learning materials.
D.They differ in learning approaches.
34.Why does the"protege effect"'help learning?
A.Because AI teachers explain things clearly
B.Because mind-maps make memorizing easier.
C.Because teaching inspires deeper understanding.
D.Because testing yourself is the best way to learn.
35.What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.Learning by Teaching Helps
B.Textbook Exercises Benefit More
C.Mind-mapping Improves Memory
D.AI Strengthen Language Learning

余选项。
When traveling, many find themselves in places where the local language is unfamiliar.
Once, travelers relied on phrasebooks, but the spread of English has reduced this need.
However,most people worldwide still don't speak English.36Increasingly,
travelers use free translation apps. These apps allow users to speak into their phones and
receive spoken translations almost instantly, bridging language gaps effectively.
37 Google Translate,a well-known name,often makes mistakes.For instance,
translating“my wife is gluten-free(不能吃面筋)”into French or Italian as“my wife is without
gluten"misses the intended meaning:However,competitors offer better choices.38
It offers no direct translations, but copies a native speaker's input.
While AI tools make travel easier, some worry they discourage language learning.
Douglas Hofstadter,a language expert, argues that relying on machines for communication
makes people unable to gain meaningful experiences and accomplishments. However, others
believe most people don't need fluency for relaxing travel.39
As AI translation gains popularity, people may divide into two groups:those eager to learn
languages for cultural experience and mental challenge, and those who see it as unnecessary
effort. This issue is particularly pressing for English speakers,as many schools in
English-speaking countries reduce foreign language programs.
40
Direct
communication, even if imperfect, brings up deeper connections than relying on technology.
A.Yet,these tools aren't perfect.
B.And they prefer the convenience of AI.
C.It is a paraphrase rather than a translation.
D.Travel has long been a motivator for study.
E.Despite this, the social significance of language remains.
F.This leads them to rely on gestures, patience,or technology.
G.ChatGPT stands out by creating more natural-sounding paraphrases.

Emily was a shy girl who often preferred the comfort of her own company. She found it
challenging to express herself and lacked confidence in her abilities.Luckily, her best friend
Ada always believed in her and encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone.
One day in art class,Mrs.Anderson announced an upcoming citywide art competition.
The room buzzed with excitement.Emily's mind flashed back to her bedroom, where her
artwork filled the walls, each piece more attractive than the last. Her heart skipped a beat at the
thought of joining,but self-doubt crept(渐渐侵入)in,whispering that her work wouldn't
measure up to the talent surrounding her.
Ada,noticing her fear, whispered,"Emily, you should totally enter!Your art is fantastic,
and this could be a great opportunity for you to showcase your talent."Emily closed her eyes,a
gentle breeze wafting through the open windows, carrying the distant sounds of laughter and
chatter. She reminded herself of the countless hours she had spent honing (her skill, the
late nights and early mornings for perfecting her technique.
With a deep breath, she finally gathered the courage to approach Mrs.Anderson after class,
saying "I want to participate in the competition."Mrs.Anderson smiled warmly."That's
wonderful,Emily! It's time you share your talent with the world.I'll provide you with all the
guidance and support you need."
In the following weeks,Emily worked tirelessly on her masterpiece.Whenever she felt
tired and wanted to quit,Ada's and Mrs.Anderson's encouraging words rang in her ears,
